I love these UK CONNECTION shows. The beverage of choice discussion is always of interest. I wish I could try some of these UK brews here in the US.

@@simonbrayfromsot1375 You are most certainly welcome and you just bring so much fun to these programs and by the ways I'm an new wave synth pop nerd and proud of it☺️
A weekly show that is saved to be enjoyed at the right time over the weekend. Another epic outing by the UK Connection. Simon's comment on Walt Disney was the start of a long series of great laughs from this episode and Steven's analysis of Gene Simmons, the artist, rang true for such a fan of the Kiss and its variants. My only recommendation for Pete is a printed dark on white large question mark sign for Pete to hold up to the camera when he (and perhaps some of we) get lost in some of the UK details. Thanks, gents. Keep up the great work. Already looking forward to the next episode. Cheers!
The “Saturday afternoon TRIO” were great 👍 once again. Thx guys !!👍💯
Thanks Gary!
Gene’s 80’s highlight was the studded headband he wore to keep his wig on during the Animalize Live Uncensored video
I met Gene Simmons at a HMV record store signing in Southampton, Hampshire, UK in 1985. He signed my denim jacket. I could truthfully say I turned my back on him! That aside, I loved early Kiss, they were dynamite when they played Southampton in a small 2,500 seater and gave it everything. And kudos to his championing of Van Halen.
Cheers for the mention of the "Odyssey" book!
Love all your books Julian. Am I right in thinking you are working on an 1980 Unmasked book?
@@russmarkham4634 Compiling data and "stuff" to see if there's enough to do one.
My pleasure Julian. It's a GREAT read. Really enjoying it. Thanks for watching!
Steven, next time you're on one of those SOT favourite prog album shows, please please please choose a William Shatner solo album. I'd love to see the other guys faces. If you play it straight, and can keep a straight face it'll be comedy gold. Please 🙏
I am a KISS fan for 44 years now. But Steven said something I did not recognize. But he's absolutely right. Gene's 78 solo album showed in first steps what Music From The Elder would become. I LOVE Music From The Elder. And now I know why I love Gene's solo album.
Thank you Buddy.
Great show again guys, comedy gold. I am always in a happier place at the end of the programme. Not so much "Last Of The Summer Wine" (long running UK sitcom for US viewers) as "Last Of The Summer Real Ale!" Just need to work out who is Foggy, Compo & Clegg! 😂😂😂
That is good to know Russ. I'm guessing that I'm probably Nora Batty!
iId say Steven Reid is Cleggy, Simon bray is a Compo lookalike and he's Northern!, so that leaves Pete as Fgogy because as you know he has the olds.
My brother and I got two solo albums each and a Kiss doll, among other things, for Christmas 1978 ( I had just turned 9). I got the Gene and Peter albums and the Peter doll. We were obsessed with them from 1976 to 1979. I used to ride my bike around town with the Peter make-up on and I would see a Gene or an Ace occasionally doing the same thing, haha. By the way, the same artist who did the solo albums also did Rush Fly By Night (Eraldo Carugati).
Good times Old Father Thames 3!
I grew up on KISS, their early stuff rocks, whether you like them or not, the could write catchy songs, and we're a marketing machine. Live show was a blast!
Queen, also were campy, but, great songwriting, and great live.
You can't define personal taste, you either like the music or you don't.
I look forward to the show, should be fun
I played bass parts on a crutch growing up with Kiss. Also, had the extendo tongue which my friends thought was rad.
I agree. Grew up on Kiss, and they were great.
I hope you can forgive my Zappa ignorance Eric?? Not sure if any will still speak to me on In The Prog Seat now!
@@TranquilityFireReid 😁👍
@@ericporter344 Phew!
One of the funny stories I heard about the recording of Asshole is the Richie Kotzen one/ Gene used Kotzen"s studio to record it and Kotzen played on it. Kiss was having issues at the time and Gene asked Kotzen if he wanted to join Kiss, Richie being Richie, said no thanks I already played in a comic book band, and pissed Gene off to no end.
Excellent show...👍👍
Thanks Francis!
Tipple for this evening Adnams Ghost Ship. I have never listened to either of these albums. Will have to give them a spin after seeing this one!
A good tipple there Jim!
Great show like always. This has become quite a high standard the three of you are setting there. I love it. The best thing Gene was involved was the first solo album by Wendy O. Williams, the best Kiss album Kiss didn't make.
Something off topic and a question to Steven (the Uriah Heep expert): Uriah Heep have released "Very 'eavy ... Very 'umble", "Salisbury", "Demons And Wizards" and "The Magician's Birthday" as picture vinyl outside the big box "Every Day Rocks". Do you have any idea if the other three albums included in the box will follow, mainly "Look At Yourself"?
Thanks a lot for doing these shows.
Thanks Albert! You are absolutely correct regarding the Wendy O. Williams album. I love it!
I'm not sure regarding the Uriah Heep picture discs. Most of the band's reissues do seem to centre around the 4 albums they've already put out separately from the box, so I'm not surprised they've started there, but it is odd they've jumped over Look At Yourself, which is a personal favourite of mine. If the others sell well then I'd guess they might do the rest, but I haven't heard any whispers of that yet, unfortunately.
@@TranquilityFireReid Thanks a lot. Then it should not be my fault as I got those four (the curse is more than real).
@@albertkienberger2349 It most certainly is Albert!
9:34 when Steven showed the back cover of that album. I automatically thought of Martin Popoff, where he complained about inside the Kiss Alive album, which was an advert for their previous albums.
I think the next homework assignment for Simon is to watch A New Hope, then Empire, followed by Jedi. He may like them now as a fully grown adult 🤣
It's funny, but I love when albums etc show the catalogue a band has had prior to that point. Yes, it's arguably a waste of space, but it all added to the mystique for me way back then. I do understand where Martin's coming from though!
@@TranquilityFireReid
I kid you not, I was on the bus today & a very drunken bloke stumbled on the bus with 2 vinyl albums, & one of them was a slightly battered Kiss Alive album the other Spilt Groundhogs.
He drunkenly opened the gatefold & I took a sneaky peak & smiled when I saw the ads for their other albums.
Anyway I took a photo (posted it on Twitter) just because it’s been a very weird coincidence that I watched two videos that talked about Kiss, and then the next day a drunken man comes on the bus with a Kiss album.

Hi Pete, Simon and Steven great fun with all of you ,this is one band that I never got into,
Thanks David. Even if I love them I totally get why KISS don't do it for everyone, so really appreciate you watching along with us this week!
I remember my first year away at college we were put in a bed and breakfast and I was sharing a room with somebody that said do you mind if I put a cassette on when we go to bed. No thats fine I said. Only to realise he only played 2 tapes, the first was the War of the Worlds, the second was the Gene Simmons solo., I have never listened to it since, I’m sure I get flashbacks, especially of those nights when it got played twice if he didn’t fall asleep first time.
The question is should I risk playing it now or will it send me over the edge.
I'm voting that you should listen to it! But I take no responsibility for what happens next!
@@TranquilityFireReid okay,I’ve done it, and it seems 42 years is enough time for the trauma to subside. I enjoyed the album ,even the last track. However , my mind had blocked out any memory of living in sin, I wish I could un remember that song again, thats the track to cut the album down to 10 songs. Enjoyed it enough to go straight onto Dynasty an album I’ve always liked but not heard for years , still enjoy that album.
@@stevefletcher6163 The passage of time is an amazing thing Steve! Living In Sin is a cracking track though! (I won't push it, 10 out of 11 ain't bad, to paraphrase Meat Loaf) I love a bit of Dynasty!

Thanks Jan!
When I saw the title of the show. I immediately thought it was about - is Gene Simmons an arsehole. Ok, interesting topic. But surely it wouldn’t take an hour to work that out. I knew before I pressed play. I must admit in the 40 years I’ve been heavily into music. I’ve never heard a single track off any of those solo albums. Unless back in the New York groove is off Aces album…..not really a big Kiss fan. I like Unmasked and The Elder. Great show as usual….I’m off to listen to those solo records…
Thanks Steve. Yes New York Groove was the only 'hit' off any of the 4 albums. Hope you find some music to enjoy among them!
I really enjoyed this absolutely entertaining discussion on Gene's solo projects. One I'm sure I wil l revisit. It gave me an idea of, a discussion over all of the " outside of Kiss" solo projects. For example, Eric Singer Project, Frehley's Comet, White Tiger, Paul's solo albums, Peter's solo stuff. Rank them as a whole or just talk about some of the better ones.
I'd certainly be willing to do that as a show Gary. Not sure if anyone else on the SoT team is that dedicated to the KISS cause though!
There were four other kids who wore the KISS Peter Criss t-shirt in junior high in 1978 and they all became my friends. In full disclosure, I defected from the KISS Army after I Was Made For Loving You had a disco vibe, IMO. I progressed to Cheap Trick, then UFO & Scorpions, then Maiden and Metallica....You know, but KISS were my gateway band.
Very funny show, love it 👍
Thanks Mark!
Simons facial expression 40 seconds in said it all lol.
P.S. Pete thank you cheering us up
Great show.Big Kiss fan here.
I was probably four or five years old. My older brother's copy of the Gene Simmons solo album had gotten warped, so he gave it to me. I can remember dropping the needle on side one, and that whole horror soundtrack opening to "Radioactive" scared the hell out of me in a way that I loved. When the main song kicked in, it was such an infectious rock n' roll tune that I was hooked.
When I was older, I was able to revisit the album as a teenager. I found it on cassette, and I picked it up. I still enjoyed it. I can still listen to the Gene album, and totally enjoy it as a fun good time. It's got some good hard rock, a little bit of Beatles worship, and even some cool theatrical stuff. I don't even mind "When You Wish Upon a Star." I was raised on those old school Disney tunes, so I thought it worked as an album closer.
I got to hear "Asshole" at a music store once when it came out. All I can remember about this album is that silly cover of Prodigy's "Firestarter." I didn't really hear anything horrible, but nothing really memorable either.
Great stuff LeatherRebel. Thanks for watching!

Peter and jeans 78 albums are my favorite of the four. And Julian Gil’s books are awesome.
The vocals by Keith Flint on The Prodigy " Firestarter " are absolutely incendiary whereas Simmons seems to be just cruising through it with no passion.
That's the most confusing thing about that cover version Robert.
How could I not watch this ''UK connection'' when it was advertised (last week) as a show which featured Gene simmons' A-hole? I'll get back to you as to how I think it went (when I've watched it). Also Steven, I hope you're getting over the cold I saw you with on ''In the Prog Seat.
Slowly but surely Trev! Thanks mate!
@@TranquilityFireReid I really enjoyed that! I can be sure of the format that is the UK Connection, to be full of wit and we all learn new things, especially Pete, about the British culture, or lack of it. I only have two Kiss albums on vinyl, 'Dynasty' and 'Unmasked', which I've come to understand are two of the worst for true Kiss fans, however I seem to remember hearing you express some love for that era of the band. I had no Idea of the Gene Simmons solo of that title and loved hearing you lads talk about that and much more,,. So thanks again Steven and please pass on my appreciation to Pete and Simon, thank you. (and you now seem to be in much better health).

Yeah, I like Dynasty and Unmasked but they aren't indicative of the catalogue. I'd suggest giving Creatures of The Night and Rock n Roll Over a listen from the studio catalogue if you want to delve further but Alive and Alive II are still probably the best examples of the band at their best.
@@TranquilityFireReid Thank you Steven, I will seek the two studio albums on you tube, your recommendations are much appreciated.

I actually like the first Gene album. It's not the best of the four but still...
I don't think he took it as seriously as the other three.
Eh, it's the one I had as a kid...my fave. Ace is still my boy though.
The 2004 Title Track makes me laugh, I dig the album quite a lot, great discussion!
Thanks Kamran!
Now that is a catchy title. You definitely have my interest there.
Have you considered doing a show discussing why Queen & Kiss can sell out shows across the world, be influential, have catchy well loved tunes but always generate hate or mocked from non fans & the press back then & now.
It’s extremely bizarre.
It's extremely bizarre how any genuine rock fans can like Kiss or Queen. Kiss are a teenybopper bubblegum band whereas Queen are a soft rock band, for people who generally like or don't get 'rock' music.
@@Walesktf I think too many people forget Kiss are not meant to be taken too seriously, they aren`t in it to get The Nobel Prize just provide a bit of entertainment/escapism. Sure they have baggage but in small doses are perfectly acceptable.🤘
@@growlers90 Kiss aren't in it to get a Nobel prize for sure. They are in it to make themselves multi-millionaires. Nothing else, well apart to screw loadsa 'chicks' and take loadsa of drugs back in the day, allegedly. I truly find their music tremendously trite, and I have listened to them on and off since 1976 and their first visit to the UK
KISS are not a teenybopper bubblegum band. You make them sound like the Bay City Rollers. I think you are focusing too much on the image/their fans/merchandising and branding at the time.
Maybe one album is pop/disco, Dynasty. The first few albums are proper 70s hard rock with great hooks. The overblown stuff and elaborate strings starts to creep in with Bob Ezrin on Destroyer.
@@Walesktf
That is a very bizarre opinion which is only an a opinion and not fact with regards to Queen.
For those who have that opinion about Queen really haven’t listened to a lot of their albums where they do experiment some sub genres of rock & metal especially in their early days.
They wasn’t scared of going beyond the stereotypical rock sound. Like Bowie they wasn’t scared of changing their image, or sound.
That’s why bands like Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Kurt Cobain, Metallica site them as one of their main influences.
In Arizona, Tucson specifically, there is a malt liquor called Evil Eye, which only comes in 24oz cans that is 9.9%! Talk about one and done. It's taste is like hot Schitz even when it's icy cold. Haha 🤘
Buried in a Kiss lunchbox! Too humorous!
As this is the UK Connection, that should be '****hole', not '***hole'. And Gene Simmons is surely both.
Good point Paul!
Sweet and dirty love the best song of the 2

I had the Album with the poster as a kid. Wish I still did. ...sigh. I had The Elder too (And kinda liked it. But don't tell anyone.)

I've always liked Kiss without loving them or needing to own all their albums or their merch. I like 3 of the four solo albums more or less equally, and I'm not familiar with A-hole at all. Still, another entertaining listen, washed down by a pint glass of Proper Job, a lovely, refreshing golden ale. Cheers!
I have tried many times to 'enjoy' Kiss. I just don't get it/them.
Icehouse needs a spotlight. Maybe more of a Martin band... But damn. I've been a fan for 35 yeas and I don't think I've EVER heard a band this tight with absolutely no loss of note over the decades... And I'm a lifelong Toto fan. Iva Davies may sing in a range that lends itself to longevity but he sounds inhumanly ageless. Just a wonder.

Gene also discovered Van Halen and Signed Cinderella too!!

@@TranquilityFireReid It is that. I stuck to the official releases only and am more of a 70s onwards fan.
@@ron6927 I might dip a toe in, so I appreciate the recommendation!
I like Kiss a lot. I think it took all four original members to make up the band, and of course Gene played a huge part. When you have a band where the sum is bigger, and better than it's parts then solo albums just don't really amount to much. Having said that I think the Ace solo album is a stand alone classic. It shows he could stand on his own. Paul could have done it if he didn't have the vocal problems he has now. What a shame. The lip sinc vocals are just an embarrassment. Luckily I took my son to see Kiss when Paul could still sing, and a good time was had by all.
Paul is 150 years old. Cut him some slack :)
I got that Gene 78 solo with my allowance money.
12 year old me was not impressed...and somewhat annoyed.
So I picked up the Peter solo record a month later...hoping....

The Gene solo 78 has grown on me somewhat.....but that marketing blitz of 78 with Double Platinum,
FOUR solo records and a "movie" left my young self broke...but it taught me a very American PT Barnum style lesson. They didnt shake me down for $ again till the 96 reunion at MSG...that evened it up some as they kicked ass.

Another entertaining show. Steven will probably want to hit me but Kiss are well beyond their sell by date but at their best they were masters of making something out of the lowest common denominator of rock music. In saying that I am making that sound easy, but of course it is not. As for Gene, in another life he might have been a Yorkshireman (he says what he likes and likes what he says) but when you analyse what he said he's not far off the mark.
Can you rank the Ace Frehley solo stuff or KISS solo stuff non 78 solo Albums

As a kid of the late 90s 2000s I also don't like star wars, don't hate it but not for me as a child or adult
The stones are massive. I liked Salisbury.
Even though Gene had not wanted to take the make up off, (More so than the rest of the guys in the early days) he sure has embraced any chance he got after the makeup was taken off to appear on almost any tv show that he wanted to be on.
Kiss was my entré into Rock, from comics to these larger than life Rock heroes. Alive II's poster was the 1st thing on my wall, (which went on to become 4 fully covered floor to ceiling with posters and the pages of Hit Parader & Circus).
I was Paul in my gang of Kiss friends, Ace was my 2nd fave, then Gene.
I didn't love his voice. He was minor cool in 'Runaway'.
As I grew up, Kiss was pushed back further and further in my album stacks.
Elder was the 1st one I skipped.
Lick It Up was the last one I bought on vinyl.
I saw Kiss during the no make-up years (with W.A.S.P.) and they played about half a show and then blew a breaker or something and called it a show.
Looking back, there are really only a handful of songs that I would still say I like.
However, there is a song on Animalize that to me, epitomizes the essence of Gene as a songwriter : Burn Bitch Burn
The epic line-
'I want to put my log in your Fireplace.'
The Egomaniacal Misogyny covered in cheese is the epitome of Gene's understated class and humble charm.
If it wasn't for all the great music from other bands that they led me to, I'd be utterly embarrassed to have been a big Kiss fan from 9 - 13.
In my opinion gene and peters solo albums were ok but ace and Paul's were fantastic albums. Ace song back in the new York groove and peters song dont you let me down were top 20 hits here in Australia in 78
When I saw the title, I thought this was going to be a discussion about whether Gene Simmons is an asshole. And I was right.
Quick change of topic guys.
Any thoughts on new Hammerfall cd "Hammer Of Dawn " ?
I liked it in the car but I think the vinyl is arriving this week. I will be more confident of saying what I think then. Looking forward to seeing them with Helloween soon.
Remember when Gene said Rock N Roll is dead?
He has said it so many times, how could we forget? Unfortunately!
I compare Genes 1978 album to Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. Broadway like
That's a great point Greg!
DONE with Kiss! Saw an interview with them, where they actually made the interviewer take off his Iron Maiden shirt, and that is was an insult to them. And then Gene went on to basically say they started Iron Maiden's and AC/DC's careers. To give them credit, KISS did start a movement in the 70s, had a few ok tunes in the 70s, and a few in the 80s, but the high pedestal that people put this band up on, just blows my mind!
