  • So, I quit drinking (for a month). I highly prioritize maintaining my health and well being, so during this time, I gained some extra helpful skills that made my dry January a bit easier. I still use a lot of these skills today and I wanted to share them with you!
I've always worked out, lifted, ran, eaten healthy, and just overall kept up with my physical health. Slowing down my drinking habits has also added to the list of ways I maintain my general health. A sneak preview is that i've found substitutions for alcohol, which have really helped reduce my drinking. One of my favorites is hop water. Here's a great recipe: • Bye Bye Sparkling Wate...
However, as always, if you feel like you may have a drinking problem, please seek professional help. There's no shame in quitting if you think it's an issue for you.

Ay man. I love clawhammer because you guys drop shit like this. You're acknowledging the problem and that means a lot to a lot of people. My mom was an alcoholic and i lost her two years ago to colon cancer from drinking. I brew beer and enjoy it, but i keep my drinking down to a few times a month at most. I live in Thailand and many of my neighbors waste their lives just drinking beer every night. Do what's best for yourself. We're here for ya dude and posts like this are very respectable. 👍

Don't forget blood tests to check your liver functions as well! I stayed in Germany for a year, drinking every day. When I returned and underwent the tests, everything was really messy. So, just like we measure things in our beer, measuring things in our health is indispensable as well!

You could also check your fructose consumption. I had a pretty similar experience. In the end, my liver was just damaged by fructose in combination with 1-2 beers per day. I reduced the fructose to nearly 0 plus I only drink 0,3-0,5l of beer per day, which really changed a lot

I am 41, and I started practicing everything you've just said about 3 months ago, and my energy levels are much better when I drink 2-3 beers in a week, rather than 2-3 beers every evening. Working out 4-5 times a week helps me to take focus away from alcohol. Without working out, It would not be possible. I do strength, running, swimming, cycling, hoping to do half ironman this or next year.

American craft beers have a high ABV, easy drinking but dangerous. In the UK our real ales are around 4% ABV, but unfortunately trending toward the 5 to 6%, which is not great. I have brewed beer for over 25 years, all my brews are 4% ABV, which can be consumed sensibly. Distilling is no go.

I've been brewing for about 11 years now. I became aware that I was probably drinking too much about 2 years ago. Weight gain, generally not feeling well, low energy. I decided to start limiting my drinking to a few nights a week, usually the weekends. I've also tried really hard to stick to a consistent fitness routine but with two young kids that are in sports and school while both me and my wife work full time, its a bit difficult to stick to the fitness routine sometimes. I'm also doing a dry January and it has been surprisingly easy for me, though I did brew twice this month, the temptation hasn't been too bad. Good luck to you and cheers!

RIP Mitch. Great standup and great one liners to live by. I went cold turkey 5 months ago (down from 7-14 drinks weekly) but started around Christmas with 1-2 week. I’ve had to stop brewing as I won’t get through 5 gallons of beer before it goes bad. But I’m happy with my decision and that’s what matters. Good luck.

I try to limit to weekends and social occasions and I try to keep it sensible when I do drink. When things go well I intermittently fast, eat super healthy during the week and run a lot. I find that injury, getting sick and sometimes life can disrupt that and I find it hard to get back but I keep fighting to get back into my fitness routine. Life is definitely better with regular exercise!

@@KieranShort not even necessarily hot water. I add cold tap water to my keg, add 1 oz of hops of my choice, a little citric acid and carbonate. After 48 hours it's ready to drink. It's literally just seltzer water with hop flavor and aroma but without the bitterness.

Did this last year, as a 49 year old with 2 kids under 10, I realised I needed to take serious stock of my alcohol intake. I stopped drinking entirely for most of 2023 and was surprised how great I felt. I went full into mountain biking rather than cross fit, but it was great to belt out a good ride and feel so awesome afterwards. I brought some drinking back in, like you I do enjoy it, but now I need to have a reason to drink, rather than pouring one just out of habit.

I typically have 1-2 beers a night. I workout hard 5-6 days a week and even incorporate some barre workouts as well. I do watch calories and always add my beer calories (unfortunately we have to acknowledge that beer has calories). I used to have zero beers during the week and let loose on the weekends. That made me feel horrible. Drinking in moderation and enjoying a beer or two every night is a million times better than binge drinking once or twice a week. This has totally changed my relationship with beer. Also, drinking lots of water throughout the day.

Nice honest content, and a very hot topic at the moment. Everything in moderation. I started with 3-4 week breaks last April, which naturally got longer and longer between drinks. Just done 5 months without any booze, don’t really miss it either. Had one beer with a mate a few weeks ago but it didn’t really do anything for me. The longer I go without the booze the less I want it. More focused on health and fitness now but they’ll always be a sneaky beer here or there along the way.

I recently quit drinking too! 10 years in the beer industry for me just led to drinking all the time just passively. Have felt way better ever since, because apparently studies show that drinking in excess whether binge or slow and steady still does the same damage.
I mean, we all know that alcohol kills both good and bad bacteria... but we for some reason expect it to not do that in our bodies. lol

Great video Kyle! I was a CrossFit athlete for approximately 7 years until I had a string of back injuries which forced me to discard the metabolic portion of CrossFit. I should point out, I did not get injured from CrossFit, but that CrossFit aggravated an injury I received in my workplace. That said all the lifting technique and mobility training I learned then stayed with me and I've gone to martial arts for my metabolic training which has been much more agreeable with my back.
I also got into drinking too much during the pandemic in part because of the delicious beer I make with the Clawhammer system! I recently listened to Dr. Huberman on the Huberman Lab podcast about alcohol and it was eye opening. I try to limit myself to drinking on the weekends only 1-2 nights per week now and no more than 6 drinks per week. There are occasions which I don't honor my own rules though which I consider a "cheat day" (social gatherings)

I do zone 2 training on my bike on the trainer for 1 hour. Startling slow and building is the best way and doing so while watching your videos helps as well! My training is based on my HRV and resting heart rate. When well rested I may ride 3 or more hours a day and keep zone 2 for 80 to 90% and then the next day 1 hour indoor 100% zone 2 then back to 3 or more hours ect then rest day of 30 minutes zone 1 and a brisk walk then rinse and repeat I throw in lots of mobility and some strength training which does often come as brewing and lifting kegs.

Took you long enough to make this video! Interesting to see how you balance your work, health and personal life!
I used to drink everyday, especially when I first started brewing. I started brewing because I struggled to take care of my health in the first place as I suffered from nerve damage as a result of an accident.
Once I felt good enough to try exercising again, it was really difficult to make it a habit again, but I got there with some perseverance. I also dialed back how much I drink which isn't really helping with how much I enjoy homebrewing, as I basically drink one per month now - I need to find more friends who drink (my generation likes vaping more than they do drinking smh).

Several years ago, I had completely stopped drinking and didn't touch a drop for two years; then COVID happened. In this last year, I have curtailed my intake again. The hardest part is breaking the routine, but once that is overcome, then it's easy. One plus to this is that my homebrew lasts so much longer.

  • @camerooney81

Thanks Kyle for sharing your experience and strategies for keeping beer consumption in check. You have a pragmatic approach to it which is refreshing to hear. I'd consider myself a weekend drinker, few beers on Friday/Sat and Sun night or other social gatherings. I had about 4-5 weeks off end of last year after having covid and a chest infection, being on antibiotics dulled the desire to drink as I wanted those meds to have the best efficacy possible. What was amazing was within a few days of not drinking my sleep was way better, after about a week I was less anxious, more productive, procrastinated less and felt calmer and more patient both at home and at work. I still drink (and brew!) but made the call to try to limit it to social gatherings only, rather than me drinking at home. So 2-3 beers on the weekend or substitute with non-alcoholic beers or mineral water. The substitutions helped a lot, as did keeping a journal of the experience and including routine runs. Last year I couldn't run 5km without stopping, last month I did a half-marathon. Small changes lead to big results and reducing alcohol intake has been one of things I wish I'd have done sooner.

I'm a homebrewer and drink on Saturday afternoon/evenings only (special occasions excepted) and eat very healthy and as you say, plenty of protein. Not only am I feeling great but am looking way better than my friends of similar age. I do it for my future health and wellbeing. Looking fit and healthy is a (welcome) bonus. Still like a few beers, still get properly drunk once a month, but 3-4 beers on an evening is quite a different thing to 4 at lunch time on how it can ruin your sleep. Alcohol makes you drop off and feel tired but ruins the sleep after an hour or two.

Great vid! I have been trying to figure out what a healthy relationship with beer is for me. I by no means have ever been a heavy drinker (1-2 a night, maybe three on a special occasion) but I have been more interested in my longevity. (cutting back on the green as well). I have been feeling great during my break from both. Better sleep, better focus. I am decently active but I need to increase that aspect. hearing these perspectives helps me determine what will work for me. I do not want to quit forever, but what does a healthy relationship look like for me? Maybe a beer every other night is right for me. Or only friday saturdays. Im not sure yet but this helps get me closer to that goal.

I don't drink everyday, but if you do, the easiest way to cut it in half is just drink every other day. It's easy because on the day you're not drinking you can tell yourself "I can wait one day, I'm so looking forwards to drinking tomorrow!". If you can't even do that, you may have a drinking problem.

One substitution that's helped me a lot is making ginger beer with my own ginger bug, homemade tepache and homemade kombucha.
When using environmental bug (mix of yeast and bacteria) the resulting beverage is much lower on alcohol than even light beer, I've had 2-3 liters of my ginger beer in one sitting and couldn't sense anything regarding alcohol.
Kombucha and tepache are similar stories, although for kombucha there seems to be a small concern with the acidity and teeth. Beyond that, you're having probiotics added to your diet

I have a bit of a fitness background already (used to go to a boxing gym 4-6 days a week) and I said no to meds. I told her, “give me 6 months to work then we can talk”. I started running 2-3 days a week, ate super well (especially with less sodium), and cut drinking to only weekends. I lost 15 lbs and dropped my LDL cholesterol by half. I still enjoy myself, but just with a little restraint and have been doing it COMFORTABLY since. Just have to maintain once you hit your goal. That’s the hard part!

I'm with you on this. Most days I have one 12 oz in the 4 to 5% range as I love classic styles. Also why I brew 2.5 gal batches and still bottle, if I kegged I'd probably graze more.

I had a great schedule and kept somewhat healthy. I have lost my way this past year and now have been slowly trying to regain that healthy routine. The beer tells me its all lies....🤣 I have gone from 7 days to 4 days. i intend to cut more as i become more comfortable with the idea. Thanks for the inspiration to get back on that horse!

I´m on dry january. And I really enjoy it. Found my love for alcohol free beer. But at the same time also reduced sugars, carbonhydrates and amped up protein. Started meditation again. I got much more motivation for working out and being productive.

I still drink but I do drink less than I used to. It actually helped me appreciate beer/alcohol a lot more. I still love some great craft beer/homebrew but tempering my amounts was important. And if I do wanna go get pretty smashed I plan it out ahead of time.

I generally try following a very similar course of action.
generally don't drink during the week, if I do I have a glass of red wine... beer depending on if we go to a social event etc.
I run and do weights during the week and weekend... eat healthy during the week and reward myself on the weekend - especially on brew day

Now that I’m 37, over the past few years I’ve been cutting down my drinking to 1 a day and also my batch sizes down to 3.5g and I cut down my 6 taps to 4 with one for seltzer. Just can’t keep up, and I also love a mile high in an arid climate so the dehydration and sluggishness was real, real.

I used to drink quite a bit of beer and exercise. I could never get into really good shape no matter how much I tried. I quit drinking and exercised the same as usual and the pounds just melted off. I got into incredible shape. Alcohol is bad for your liver, kidneys and pancreas. It's not worth it to me.

I used to drink heavily when i was younger, Last big session i had was at my sisters wedding where after a bottle and and a 1/4 of spirits and multiple beers in one sitting, the next day after having a wicked hangover and thought to myself the way im going is down hill and its going to have some serious side effects later on in life. So i decided lets take the next month off drinking any alcohol that turned into 3 months later before i had a drink, now days i tend to have a drink here and there but can go months without touching it but i try to only drink at events/dinners out with friends.

I've been a homebrewer for 10 years, I only drink on weekends and in moderation. Being a homebrewer means drinking less but drinking better. I don't see any harm in that.

I don't think there really are magical fat burning properties to Z2 training, it's just that it's more sustainable and you're less prone to injury and also don't suffer the fatigue to your central nervous system that would diminish the intensity of your other workouts. You still burn more total energy at higher power output, and those higher power zones increase your fitness. But yeah you fundamentally need to balance the alcohol with your whole lifestyle and people underestimate how hard people like you work to stay the way you are. Thanks for laying it all out brother. Great video.

Prior to Oct 15, I drank my HomeBrew every day. Two sometimes three beers a days. At 61, I decided I wasn’t going to finish strong if I kept up this consumption rate. So, I decided to reduce caloric intake and limit drinking to 2-3 beers a day on weekends and holidays only which resulted from 14-21 to 4-6 beers per week (usually 4). I also began body weight and resistance band exercises.
However, I enjoy the HomeBrew hobby so I began looking for ways to give away beer so I can keep my brewday count up. I joined a HomeBrew club so I take beer there and I began signing up for competitions. I also began brewing smaller batches. My big batches are three gal and small batches are 1 gal.
In a little over 90 days I have lost a little over 15 lbs. with noticeable fat loss and muscle definition. I like the results so I plan to continue to, then maintain, my fitness goals. Cheers!

Fortunately, I like running and run 5 or 6 times per week. Otherwise I'd be really overweight. It also gives me the motivation to moderate my drinking, so I can make progress with my running. Also, most of my friends are from a run group that meets at a local brewery. Finding balance can be hard.

I notice daily drinking really takes a tole on the body pretty fast. I like to go until the weekend to have a few on Friday and Saturday. Drinking everyday also makes it not enjoyable anymore. I notice though I I hate going for over a month. Its not like I crave the alcohol but I feel like I miss out on alot of social events.

(posting this on 1/22) Only 9 days left for all us DJ'ers!!! We made it this far, so 1 week from Thurs should be easy... I made it through a poker night with only soda & water.
Fun alternative that has helped me get through: try a bourbon essence in a big glass of diet ginger ale. Most homebrew shops have them for the Airstill market.

Good for you brother and for the others commenting here! Homebrewing is a hobby that can kill you. I love it, but self control is critical. The dose makes the poison. Supplying my friends and colleagues with beer allows me to keep brewing but it doesn't require me to drink that much of it.

I completed 100 days of no alcohol late last yr, was surprised at the amount of suger I craved. I cycle MTB 4x per week and would easily have 4-5 std drinks a night every night, so 100 days was my way of seeing who was boss! The good things were better sleep, less snoring, 3 cm reduction in waist line. Probably something I found best was no alcohol beer, I brewed and still appreciate zero alcohol beer. 2 of these at night lessens the rest of what I take in.

Personal method is cardio 3x per week (stairs) and compound lifts 4 days broken into back/abs, chest/triceps, shoulders/arms, legs. Drinking a couple times a week, making my kegerator just inconvenient enough to not bother getting to some days. NMN supplementation making me feel a lot more energy.

I had to stop because It was getting too expensive. I haven't brewed anything in a few years so it's all store bought. That $15 12 pack of specialty beer from 6 months ago is now $22. Even the soda prices are crazy. I was paying $4/12 pack of dr pepper. It's now $8/12 pack. Also stopped grabbing lunch a couple days a week after my $6 meal became $9.99 in just a few months.
I'm not hurting for money but I'm also not going to feed the greed of these big companies taking advantage of people.
