  • The crewmembers aboard the space station took a short break Saturday to get a look at the storm from their vantage point. Even from space, the storm expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico Aug. 21 and gain strength as a potential Cat 5 storm, impresses the crew with its size.

That is one big storm. Thing has a lot of warm water to give it more strength and make Cat5 status tomorrow or tonight once it slams the Yucatan. Simply amazing footage.

I've got to run and get some unfun stuff done but I want to say how impressed I am that so many "young" people have so many constructive and intelligent things to say...My 4 grown children would moan if they read this but I know we're not lost all to hell because you people are on top on it. By the way, 56 isn't "that" old anymore. Love y'all...be careful and don't stop caring no matter what you believe in. Sarah in Houston, Tx.

This is why space and science are important. Imagine the wonder of seeing this from space. Or anything, for that matter. There's so much to know, so much humility and self-awareness that could be derived just from recognizing that we're NOT the biggest things on the planet, and that nature really doesn't care about us.

Hurricanes names are chosen from a list selected by the World Meteorological Organization. The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year. Every sixth year, the first list begins again. Each name on the list starts with a different letter, for example, the name of the very first hurricane of the season starts with the letter A, the next starts with the letter B, and so on. The letters "Q", "U", "X", "Y" and "Z", however, are not used.

I was stuck in this one in 2007 while in the West Indies while it was a category 2 with ~170km/h winds and it hit us at night time which was worse cause you couldn’t see a damn thing and couldn’t gauge how bad it was outside your window- I remember the rain hitting the window like a tsunami or a car wash, and that nonstop piercing howling sound- I’d never heard the wind like that before, was scary as hell but then morning came and only the weaker winds, after the worst of it had passed over at night, were left, and the day heat was still too hot and with no power=no a/c so it was like an oven inside still, so me and my neighbour stepped outside and enjoyed the “natural” a/c while he had a smoke, and we watched the palm trees swaying 90 degrees, crazy...not quite PTSD, but it kind’ve left me with an impression of the power of nature’s wind when it gets violent, and tho have never experienced a twister, thankfully, the violent wind of the hurricane made me wary about twisters- since now I personally know what that kind of powerful wind is like and so, living in the northern prairies with peak summertime as our severe time, those severe thunderstorm/tornado watches/tornado warnings tend, at times, to kinda scare the shyt outta you, but at the same time, strangely fascinate you too...on July 23rd I saw and made a vid with my tablet, while hail was coming down, of a mesocyclone spinning between southwest of our community and the city limit (about 30 kms away), and this year has been bz in terms of the numbers of twisters around the area, but thankfully, far away from us for the most part...

What is hard to imagine is that a cat 4-5 hurricane is simuler in wind speed to a F2-3 tornado. Most understand the power of medium size tornadows. Now crank one up to the size of Texas.

there's "air" in space, but it's not enough to sustain a human for any period of time. Also, the pressure differs in space, so space suits are worn in addition to the oxygen/nitrogen factor.
