- A shave horse is a traditional foot operated clamping device used mainly in green woodworking. Here I make on using minimal tools and 2x4 construction grade wood.

Just built this. Switched in pressure treated 2x6. cut all the angles at 22.5 degrees but otherwise the same. Once you figure out which ones need to be cut (the legs, both sides, the front end of the top and base) it's actually easier to build. Thanks bunches for this video.

Yes! Why did you make the seat that way with the smaller 2x4 at an angle? Why not just space the 3 boards evenly in a line?
Pretty nice. You could have enhanced the strength a lot by gluing the joints before screwing. Do you want to be able to take it apart. And why not trim off the sticking-up triangles of the leg tops. Oh, and why such an awful seat?
Seat acts as a cleaving break, and sticking up parts of the legs as a positive stop for carving or using a sharpening stone. Glues not needed plenty strong with out it but of course you could if you wanted too

Yeah, the riving break thing is clever, as long as you don't stress the seat boards too much. That's where glue might help. But why is middle board angled? Not that it matters, I guess, but it looks sloppy to me.
I cant' quite visualize how you would use the leg projections as stops. For the front leg, would this be with you standing beside the horse? For the back legs, would this be with you turned around on the seat?
Middle board is angled to allow different size pieces to be split with a froe. The front protrusion was left for no particular reason 😉

Yes its so it could be used as a mini cleaving break which is demonstrated at the end. Cleaving is the process of splitting wood along the grain usuall
y with a tool called a froe. A cleaving break is the device that holds the wood to help you apply pressure in the right direction.
now to get my brother-in-law to make it for me LOL
Make one yourself, just borrow a saw and a drill if you dont have one, its easy :)

Seen as its not my design but taken straight from Mike Abbotts book, I don't think it would be fair of me to give out all the measurements. But its a straight forward design, easy enough for you to figure out your own as all the steps are clearly shown, if not there's a link to his book where you'll get all the plans for it.

Great idea poor build quality. There is no reason to have the seat like that. Very strange to me.
