- We will be using the draw knife on several coming projects. The best way to use a draw knife is the hold the project securely using a shavehorse. My son and I show you how you can easily build your own!

Nice shaving horse. But the most impressive part of the video was a father working with his child. Good for you.
Very good video, learned a lot. You are the epitome of how a father should share his time and knowledge with his son and expose him to hands on techniques so he can be self sufficient when he grows up. Your son will always love and respect you. I am proud for you. God bless.
Robert Langley thank you sir! appreciate the comments!
You are a good dad.
+Chris Mahar Thanks Chris!
This video was informative and I think you. Your son made this video even more enjoyable. He is a great gift in your life, I admire your patience and time with him.
Good on you man for having your kid in the shop👍 All the skills I needed to get me going, and some of my happiest memories, were gained from spending time making with my dad and grandad. Still remember the smell of both shops... funny the things that stick. Remember nailing 4 pieces of 2x1 together and calling them "window frames" 😂😂
All the best and hope you both make lots of great memories 👍
thanks Robert! I love seeing the look on his face when I show him something new.
+The Apprentice Same here! My yougest girl loves catching the "ribbons" that come off when I turn a green bowl. 😂 Makes it all good 👍
Watched a few of these how to shave horse videos, yours by far the simplest. Must be your helpers input. Nice job
Keep up the good work, with your son and with your woodworking!
Great build seems to work well ,nice to see your kid in the shop with you it's great to get them involved.
Cheers
Tim from Wood 4 Nothing
It's awesome that you take your son with you to work. I had both my boys with me on job site since they were little. I had a backpack I would put them in and they were content.
A handy tool for the workshop. Cute little fella/assistant. Thanks for sharing. Cheers mate
Thanks Hawk!
Your boys voice is adorable. Love the channel!
Hand tool. Great to see you guys working together. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome build, love the fact your son helps you out with projects!
Thanks! Yeah, I love the quality time with him. It's great to fill his head with the possibilities of woodworking early :-)
Awesome father/son time!! Way to be a dad!!
I have been making walking sticks since I was 7 or 8 and the bark on the branches is always a pain in the but to take off and I always wanted to rather get one or make one and I am so happy that I finally found a video on how to make the one THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much
Had to subscibe after watching the Boss do the final calibration on the shave horse, a sign of a true Master craftsman.
good one..... nice job. keep your son involved too... he is learning too
Good design on the horse. Good Dad, cute kid! I remember when my Son was that age helping me in the shop, enjoy making memories for the both of you!
+Old Man from Scene Twenty Four Thanks!
Great video, love that your kid helps you out. Also, I love your view on bushcraft. I feel the same way, it's all about self sufficiency.
+Nathan Jennings Awsome! Thanks for watching. Hope you check out some other videos as well! Denis
Getting your boy out there with you at such a young age gets my respect . While I am not an adherent to the term "bushcraft" , I concur with you on your ideas and definition . Awesome shaving horse !
ATB from NM .
Thanks man! And, are you really a tracker? I have been looking for someone to teach me for 10+ years!
Wow! What amazing experience! Hope you drop by again!
what a great little boy, I liked the inspection, and the need to put his piece of dowel in every hole he could find. haha
Man, wow.. wow.. wow. It's heartwarming seeing how fantastic can be the a dad's love for his son. You were perfect all the time and your kid "Oh my God", he's lovely, totally lovely; he's totally integrated to your shop, he's calm and sweet. I have no words to express how I'm moved.. I know, better than everyone, how this living together between dad and son is important to to the growth of a healthy and happy person. I'm totally right that your Zach will be a very happy man and will give to his kids the same wonderful education you're giving to him. Thank you, thank you so much for sharing this precious example of Love and Blessing, watching this video made an extreme well to me. Watching it, made me full of love and full of hope in humanity. God Bless your Family. Renato here. :-)
wow... thanks Renato for the kind words! eloquently said and i appreciate the encouragement. denis
Good job. I've been thinking of making a shave horse myself. Nice to see you had your Little Apprentice helping you. It reminds me of when my son was smaller.. Cheers 🇨🇦
Excellent video for an apprentice like me....I had the shave horse bottom part done...I will do its upper part like yours.....thanks a lot!!!
Glad to have had the chance to view your Video... thanks
Dana M Glad that you took the time to view my video! TBA
Great video!
Thanks Cole!
Love the project but the best part is when the little guy is minding his business with the brush. That is work ethic!
Haha thanks Juan, Yeah he loves cleaning so much that he got a toy vacum cleaner for his second birthday ;-)
Thanks for watching! TBA

glad you liked it!
renato hardwood said it all great work with the wood and with your wonderful son
Thanks!
I was on board from the second you popped the ear plugs into your son's ears! He's a lucky kid!
LOL...I like how your Son is helping out with the hammer while you are explaining away and not bothered at his banging on your draw horse as you explain...You are a Great Dad!
I've wanted to make one of these for a while & will get to it son enough... Enjoyed the video...Will Subscribe!
Thanks for the video
Raylon
Hahahahah you two are awesome. I'm so glad ya just let him keep hammering everything while yer talking. That brightened up the day.
Hope you are both still creating creations ! Good stuff.
Fluke Skywalker thanks! I have two boys and they are older. We still work on projects together but they are too young to work on my current truck project.
Working with wood enriches the soul.
Good skills mate.
haha I would have to agree. thx
Really cool project! Can't wait to see it in action! P
Thanks! I can't wait to make my first bow!
Ah ah for a while I thought my ears were playing tricks because when your boy was speaking I could hear French words... until you spoke and it was definitely French! Ouf ! Merci pour cette video, construction simple et efficace!
first video I have watched of yours and i'm hooked. good information and the right mindset. also Zach was a great helper and it gives me ideas on how to help my little ones learn.
welcome! thanks for watching and I am glad you like the content! denis
Thank you for posting it I prefer green wood but I can do it in green as long and I study your dimensional model. Also I agree with you on what bushcraft is, survival and self reliance. +1 like +1 Sub
this is the first of many videos im watching of you i learned a lot think you keep up to good work
Zach is an easy-going bossman. :)
Yes he is!
Nice simple effective design! Well done. I made a flat board shaving horse last year that needs some tweaking, your vid has given me the bug to get it done! Subbed your channel!
Andy Collier Thanks for the Sub Andy! Appreciate it! Glad you liked the project! TBA
I hope you’re paying that young man........more productive than most ever are as apprentices!! Well done to Zach
Im a recent subscriber and Ive been enjoying your canoe series. Love everything about what you do and where you live and how you react with the kids all of it. Managed to resist commenting until now and your words at the end of this video that did it. My kids and grandkids have and still are learning all this stuff together with me. Bushcraft can and does reflect in everyday life and many of the skills for one reflect in the other. Keep doing it sir just as you are and know theres another family across the pond sharing the fun and frustrations with you.
Thanks alot Tom! Glad to have you on the channel!
Yup liked this.Gonna build similar to try a couple of paddles soon. Can tell it may not have turned out without such quality assistance.
Thanks Kevin, for sure! I don't know what I would do without his help! He's really the one that designs all my projects... :-)
Thanks, just bought a draw knife and a froe, next on my list is curved & straight hand adze, then a wall paper steamer for steam box for shaping wood. Fun fun you know!
cool man!
It was nice of Zac to let you LoL great video really enjoyed it
+hank keener help

Another great video and a beautiful little helper buddy! Keep it up! I noticed that wood holder in your video, I really need to build something like that for my ever changing work area. I'm also very much getting into the idea of restoring old axes and rehanging them. I'm just getting ready to put up a video on an old Plumb boys axe I just finished with a store bought handle. - Paul
+The Griffin Benchmark Cool paul let me know when it's up and ill check it out!
Denis
I'll do that! It's only the second axe hanging I've ever done so I'm sure others will have advise for me. :)
yr little kid very hard working
Pretty cool DIT project Denis Nice work ! looks like Zach was having fun !
atb john
Thanks John, Yeah anything to do with tools you have him won. :-)
that's awesome i miss those day my youngest is 23 yrs old ,cherish the moments my friend they grow up fast !
I had to go ahead and click the like button when you put ear-plugs in you son's ears. Good move, Dad.
Next step after practicing up on wood, or as a side study... Blacksmithing. then you can make the metal parts for your tools too, pliers, knives, assorted blades, hinges for your cabin doors, pots and pans, coat hooks....... the list goes on and on if you have wood and metal skills. That boy of yours is adorable. are you speaking French to him? you have no discernible accent when you are speaking English.
Wow, I didn't realize it was that easy to make, definitely next project on my list, luckily I have about the same age assistant as you.. So it's going to go smoothly as yours did.... I think my grandson gets a bigger kick because he has to wear glasses as well...
Haha well those are actually his everyday glasses but they serve well as safety glasses :-)
Thanks for Watching Michael! TBA
Good video ! Like you , except I have been planning on building one for many many years and have several draw knives.
Now at 74 and disabled, I have several handles that need making and getting serious about building one.
Thanks !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
BIG thumbs up for Zach the cutie pie! :-)
Salut. I would spoon shave a nice comfy seat to finish. Great project.
+Tim Poisson Hi Tim, this was a first try. I would like to make another with the experience I have gained in building and using this one. It's too shaky and does not hold the pieces to my liking. the next one I would spend more time making it nice and comfy. thanks for watching!
Un buen trabajo, pero nada comparable con tu ayudante, es fantástico!!!
obrigado amigo!
Super video . I like to much, tnx.
I thought your instruction video was great. It was awesome how you were able to find ways for Zach to help. As a papaw you gave me some ideas in ways, that I can have myGrand daughter to help me in shop. To; ZACH My name is Mr Jeff I live in Kentucky. You wereSuch a joy to watch. You were such a helper to your dad. I love to see you in another video see you later gator. Your new friend "JEFF".
Thanks! glad you liked the vid.
Good video Love that Farther and Son time Tommy
Thanks Tommy!
alguien 2020? buen trabajo. eso es lo ke necesito. salu2 desde Qba.
Nicely done... the only thing I wish you had added as you did the build was to tell us the dimensions.
+Grandpa Bill Hey Bill, ill try to add those to the description when I get the chance.
Great video, thanks I've been wanting to learn how to build one of these for a while now so i can use my draw knife more safely. Your assistant seems to love helping you too its great. Hopefully when i have a son he will want to come help me in my shop as well!
Hi Wicked survivalist, I am glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you have a great helper like mine one day too! TBA
Thanks, i really appreciate it! Sorry to ask and make myself sound dumb , but what does TBA stand for ?
T.he B.bushcraft A.pprentice :-)
Thanks I knew i was asking a dumb question lol
Nah, no dumb questions.others probably wondered too!
Thanks! Great video. I like how you work with your kid.
Im trying so hard to translate that french jargon off the top of my head and i only get the odd word or two... And hes talking to a young boy... I feel bad! Hahaha
+Sr. Dylan Tick-Tock Haha it would be neat if I went through some videos and added subtitles...
yeah! haha! thanks for puttin up the videos in the first place man!
How did you decide on the angle for where the leg fits into the main bench?
Something about doing something traditional / Primitive captivates me. ... You'll behave now the project manager Zach is on the floor.
Haha yeah it's always been a passion for me to learn traditional woodworking. And yes, I have to watch myself with the foreman around. no slacking! Thanks for watching!
Is that a beaus brewery hat i see from VKH? I am from that area as well, nice to see a local Canadian.
yup!
Could you tell me the length of the legs? Thanks for the great video!
+Tom Clark It's all custom for me. measure from bellow your knees to the ground. That should be the length of the legs. You want to be low in a comfortable position to pull.
Great video. I need to build one soon, do you have the plans available?
+Alan Hill I didnt use any plans. I just googled shave horse images and went from there.
Wish I had a work space to have do that one day I think I will buy a shipping container and use it for a work shop.
Thats cool JP! I have seen some amazing things done with Shipping Containers!
Houses, cottages...
Me too I just don't have space in my basement or a garage so thinking a shipping container is my best bet on my wood lot
I wish RUclips allows two likes. Therefore one like is hardly enough for Zack. So there you go.
list of materials needed for it?? what are the measurements for the wood?
Please?
Great Job. Love you little one speaking French, so cute. How close are you to New Hampshire?
***** Hey man thanks, well NH is just south of us. 2-3 hours drive I guess. TBA
If you are interested, we are having our Annual White Mountain Excursion in Bethlehem NH. It's May 28-31. You are more than welcome to attend for some or all of it. Let me know if you want more details.
***** sure! Send me a private message to bushcraftapprentice@gmail.com with the info.
From experience, I don't recommend using a hinge for the "table" portion. It did not work out well for me ;)
You should also get yourself a spokeshave or two.
Ya I'm in Ottawa are have you ever been to a place called kanata
Kanatha Aki? Yes I have! I took a survival course there this fall. I even have an episode on my time there! Where you there?
ruclips.net/video/VZzLIGKQprc/видео.html
Could you possible to give approach sizes
I basically just measured my calve and arm length.
What's the use of having a dwarf if he doesn't do chores?
exactly! that's why I got three dwarfs
I hope you don't mine me asking where are you in canada? You look familiar
Hi Jeremy! I am in the outskirts of Montreal towards Ottawa. Does that help any ? :-)
GOT GLUE.....!!!
What language is that?
Who has ever heard of putting ear plugs in your kids ears... Not my dad... Where's my hearing aid...
+Michelle B Haha! I try no to use power tools around my kids at all. Another reason why I love using old hand tools.
What language were you speaking to ZACH
French
what language is your son speaking?
French
I did something like this a month ago with plans from Woodprix.
Pi
what language are you speaking?
gunsmakemesmile french ,
French-Canadian. A pretty specific dialect.
I am sorry but I suspect you live inner city.....
what?
What the hell, is that all you got out of this Moron? Crawl back under your rock and go to sleep.
not successfully
+Максим Анпилогов Thats ok, keep trying and you'll get it eventually! :-)
