- From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1986. Directed by Keith Gow. Interior decorators and restorers Elizabeth Stevens and Christine Cooke demonstrate their skills restoring the Victorian and Art Deco decorative paintwork at Vila Alba in Kew and in private homes in Hawthorn and Toorak, Melbourne, all built in the 1880s. The film shows many beautiful, traditional decorative techniques, including stencilling, marbling, wood graining, simulated tortoiseshell and porphyry, and gold gilding.
It's gorgeous to see the magnificent European designs, and traditions. Literally a glorious country sprung from red dust, too bad it's under attack by lesser "men", who out of spite and envy, want to tear it down.
Greetings from the old continent,Auzzie it's a stunning place to visit.
What incredibly talented woman. I do hope that they were able to teach their craft to students who are still carrying out this wonderful restorative art. Thanks again for your video. It’s a terrific channel and i truly hope that more and more people subscribe and watch our recent past.
As a young fella living in London in the 80’s I served a 3 year apprenticeship in decorating followed by 3 more years learning how to marble, grain, tortoise shell, gold leaf and all aspects of broken colour work .
I too worked in some of the most spectacular homes in and around Buckingham palace.
I enjoyed every minute, it was an honour to bring life back to these places, it’s great looking at the concentration level on these ladies faces.
I have full admiration for them.
