I would take that 2/3 of my coworkers would still do it today, the only thing saving them is that they do not have admin rights on their accounts and cannot run any executable files. Otherwise, they would run any shit they receive, as long as it remotely looks alright. And even if it does not.
@8Man It was a good way to find new people to watch. And to be found as well. But that's gone and even other better websites don't have it because everything has to suck now.
Dude yes, I miss when multiple vintage PCs connected to a local server are used to demonstrate the virus. I know it is not for very long, but I can't remember the last time this happened.
Didn't know who Anna Kournikova was back then, but I would have definitely double-clicked the vbs file if had name "pokemon", "pikachu", or "digimon" in it.
This helps alleviate my imposter syndrome as a software developer and as a person who used to read a lot about young malware authors. It seems those young coders often had no idea what they were doing, they just found a script generator online and used that instead of writing things themselves
A lot of these viruses would be counter by giving everyone a basic understanding about file extensions. If everyone knew how to check a file extension, so many of these viruses would have never spread because they'd see something fishy going on with the double extension. Of course, this was early 2000's, so it was even less likely for people to be interested in learning about computers than it is nowadays.
It doesn't help that Windows even today hides file extensions by default. Now it's a lot easier to turn them back on since the setting is right there on the ribbon (not sure about Windows 11) but back in the Windows XP days people didn't go out of their way to turn the extensions on.

I remember reading about it, especially from the perspective of who wrote the worm, "KAlamar", an Argentinian virus writer that wrote the virus generator. Also, the malware writer behind Melissa had a hand into tracking Jan.
Great little worm... I'm so glad I didn't have internet access back in the day. I was 3 years old in 2001 and pretty naive. As toddlers go... but shockingly I COULD use a computer. Also I didn't know you had a cat! Give Lexus some scritchies for me!
