- For the maiden flight of my DJI Mini 3 Pro, in my excitement there was one thing I didn't check, and it had disastrous consequences - don't make the same mistake I did!

Welcome back Mike. As a brand new pilot, only a week in with a Mini 2 your videos have been a superb knowledge base for me. If I'd have been in your predicament with this video I've have just watched the drone fall open-mouthed until its inevitable demise, but your experience told you automatically to pull up on that stick probably without even thinking - yet another lesson for a newbie too, so thank you for sharing!

And today's lesson is read the bloody instruction manual the Mini 3 Pro will "NOT" take off in this manner.
However I'm so happy for you that it didn't crash and you managed to get it back hopefully lesson learnt lol.

Good for you mate - I'm pleased to hear that!
Even if it's a bad idea to start from a small balcony in first place, you do not need to switch off the obstacle avoidance. Just fly sidewards in your direction. In every situation the landing pad is too near to myself I just turn the drone 90 degrees away from me an land it flying sidwards in the proper position to land. It's that easy. You can also land it in your hand this way, no problem at all.

Mini 3 doesn't spin up when you drop or push it up, you have to give it some left stick up or use Auto take off.
There's a few folk been caught out by it but this one is easily the winner.

Ha ha thanks mate, it sure was! Taking a bit longer to get going here than expected, but more content is on the way, I know it's been a long time between drinks! No licence, I tend to ask for forgiveness rather than permission (like when I flew through the Shanghai world financial centre building - but that's another video) ha ha. Hahaha that is one way to ramp up the drone flying stress levels... actually probably lucky you were as high as you were otherwise it might have hit the ground if you were standing on it... thanks for the shoutout in the end roll, I always think its great actually knowing someone on RUclips in the flesh so to speak. Auto take off button gives you about 5 seconds to nudge take off before it try to send launch. Sports mode is a fast way to disable the OA sensors

You have to let the drone take off under its own steam, you can't just throw it up like that. The manual will never recommend taking off or catching by hand there is no setting.
Well you can do exactly that with the Mini 2. I guess my assumption made an ass out of me ha ha
Wow! Great save, now go & buy a lotto ticket 😂 Had a close call with my mini 2 recently, nearly ended up in the ocean after I took off & didn’t give it enough time to update it’s home point. I only had seconds to land it on the beach before the battery ran out. Then I had a 2km walk to get it back. Very stressful feeling!

I managed to get a video from the footage I took. The drama happened at the end of recording. I was just relieved it didn’t go for a swim😂

I wonder if the confusion was the height you were above the ground maybe confused the drone?
Because the app works out the drones attitude relative to your height, so if you're 20 something stories high, your Fly app thinks that is 0 altitude, so the errors on screen were because you were flying 'below' that height, so a minus figure altitude.
Maybe the sensors on the drone couldn't figure out what was going on?😲⚠️😁
I bet you were relieved to see it flying after it fell so far.
@Al S Only there was no 'floor' technically under the drone as it launched outside the balcony away from the floor of the room.
Yes 'ground zero' is measured from the launch point so if you're 400ft up a mountain, that is Oft altitude as you fly off, any lower and your telemetry shows a negative number.
That's what I think threw off the altitude hold sysyem, it suddenly thought it was way up high, it's downward sensors confused what it's telemetry was saying ie it was high up, not at ground zero so downward it went.
As I said the best way to launch like that from your hand would be, open palm, arm motors, just push up on the throttle, not sure if throw and launch is a thing on the Mini 3? 😲⚠️😳😁
Yeah I was very lucky. Just used to the Mini 2, where slight movement up or down activates the flight. Seems the Mini 3 doesn't do that!

It needs to read a ground surface to start a hover. Thats why u were able to do it when u where outside. When u did it out the balcony, there was no floor close enough for the sensor to read.

Balcony flights are always dangerous. Wind currents hitting your building can often push the drone just enough to alter its course. I've also experienced fighting the sensors which see the balcony as an obstacle. Most drones have a sport mode which automatically cancels the obstacle avoidance and you can maneuver for wind variance much faster. Have you checked to see if you have access to your buildings roof? I live in a 30 story High Rise building in Vietnam. They do not lock the roof so that's where I launch from. I can see the whole city from up there and I have lots of room for take offs and landings. It's like having your own aircraft carrier in the sky and it's much safer. Also I'm up nice and high, I can fly the full max range of my drones because up there, I have perfect line of sight. I have had hundreds of successful long range flights with virtually no problems. Also, good save. A true pilot does not give up, you stay on the sticks, you think fast, you are responsible for your drone and the safety of those below. Well done Sir. This happened to me once. I launched and didn't think the compass calibration notice was that important. Suddenly my drone just dropped for no reason at all. I could see my screen going round and round as it fell. I could see my elevation falling fast. I stayed on the sticks and somehow woke it up. However, once I recovered the forward stick would cause the drone to go backward and right was left and left was right. My compass was screwed. So I had to fly everything in reverse order but as a pilot, I was determined to win the fight and get my drone home safely. I was successful but the adrenaline rush was almost more than I could bare. So now I always pay attention to the warning boxes. Never assume anything.

I’m glad that you didn’t lose your drone. Maybe the obstacle avoidance didn’t let the drone fly so near to the building. Just guessing. I will be interested to know if you find out what caused this.
Yeah the OA kicked in when I tried to land it. I don't think it would have helped it on the way down, I think that was just dumb luck!
Guess the mini 3 didn't flip over because afaik it turns off if it flips over. Very lucky indeed! Unlike mini 2, etc, doesn't look like mini 3 supports throw / toss take off.

This happened to me, hand launch at waist high and just fell to the ground, Thought it was me. Pleased you recovered it. Enjoy your videos .
You have to let the drone take off under its own steam not throw it up like in this video.
It works for the Mini 2 it was a reasonable thing to think the Mini 3 would be the same I guess.

If you can't afford to lose a drone, don't buy them. You will eventually have a disaster, and if you're mentally prepared for it it won't be so traumatic. Tell all my friends who buy motorcycles, you're going to drop it, it's going to get scratched, learn to deal with it before you do it.
Insurance is always handy 🙂
