- First in a detailed series on building a wooden table saw. This one covers the heart of the saw - the blade arbor and lift mechanism.
I'm designing this as I go, so changes will happen as I progress and there will be plans available when the project ends.

*Great Mechanism, I'm going to Make This* 👍👏👍👍👌👍
Totally awesome video, great mechanism. I normally don't go for people talking while they are building, some talk like they are speaking to 5 year old kids and that can be very annoying. Having said that, I really enjoy the way you speak and explain in detail.. fit and function. Your channel is both inspirational as well as very educational. If I was only half as good as you, I wouldn't buy anything, I'd make it all. As long as that table saw is kept inside where it is dry, it will last many life times and would still be just as accurate as any store bought saw. I am so looking forward to your next installments.
@@IR-nq4qv Hmm ... i not get why everyone builds those arbor and lift mechanism out of pure wood ... this will not stay like its build for very long if used. Wood rubbing Wood ... spells disaster.
I like the way you put ball bearings into the Blade arbour ... but then the tilt hinge is just a metal rod in a drilled hole? Same thing with the set screw ... you put in a bronze bushing ... which is a softer metal then the pretty rough set screw ...
Remember, i do _not_ say it won't work ... what i _am_ saying is *how long* it will work. Imagine you use that Table Saw later every weekend for 2-4 hours ... how long do you think the bronze bushing will last when you continually raise/lower the blade? Or the hinge that gets used when raising/lowering?
I would have used ball bearings for those spots as well, just like you did with the arbour and the piece that the metal rod pulls/pushes. But excuse me, that's just a old man rambling.
Looks really good John, I am really impressed and whilst I could probably work it out from the video I would like to support you when you have plans available and I will purchase them. I need a longer arbour for my Dado blades. Well done! regards Mike in Australia
The brilliant idea here is that the vertical hinge support is *inside* the arbor/blade support. All the other versions I've seen have the hinge support *outside* the arbor/blade support, which requires a giant hole in the side of the support. For example: ruclips.net/video/c9Aib3Yl8PM/видео.html
I'm very pleased that you decided to go ahead with this.
I'm currently in the process of designing another table saw (4th iteration) so this is perfect timing for inspiration and encouragement.
Be sure to not forget a riving knife. This guy is stupid for not using one. Accidents can happen to pros too.
Nice mechanism John. I'm an engineer and a fairly amateur wood-butcher, it never fails to amaze me the precision you are able to achieve with wood, good work keep it up.

Thanks John for actually doing this project, I know you were on the fence about moving forward with it. Looking forward to the series and plans
When a experienced Craftsman meets design. Beautiful stuff John! Love ya and looking forward to anything you do next! Take care and Cheers.
Thanks John. This is the kind of video I subscribed to your Chanel for. Can't wait to see the rest of the series. I remember the first table saw I ever owned was one that I built myself. I made it from a skill saw mounted under a table similar to one that you have built. Love all the woodworking machines, tools and jigs you've designed and built over the years.
I'm glad you are continuing this series John, I was wondering how it was going. Thanks for the videos!
Love the old school meets new school vibe in your videos...the level of detail and mechanical genius is simply amazing. From a fellow Ontarian, good luck!
Finally!! You have been talking about this build for a while now and I have really been looking forward to it. I know that I will not be building one in my lifetime, but there are so many facets to this build that I know some of them will be useful in my future projects.
You're mechanical wisdom is coming through in this build John. That looks great & works amazingly well! Can't wait to see how it all comes together................
Damn clever John. Thank goodness there are blokes like you willing to show and tell their talents. I enjoy learning from you. Thank you.
YAY!! Building a new table saw!!
Love to see all the ingenuity.
Edit: just finished watching.
It's become a fine piece of mechanics; hat's off mr Heisz!
been watching you for years, I still am amazed of how natural this comes to you, if I had a woodworking hero it's either you or jay bates! Good job man! looking so much forward to the next one! (returning subscriber)
Another educational video that would come in handy when deciding to build my own table saw, thanks !!!
Or just buy a table saw that will give you far better results at a far cheaper cost.
Let the fun begin. I have been waiting for this project. Love the video and instructions. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks for sharing your talents...
Looking forward to the following videos, great job John.
You are a bright man John. Thanks for teachings us so much with each video. Greetings fro Alberta.
Really like this format with details of the design and thinking process.
Definitely looking forward to the rest of this build.
its here! after GOT and Breaking Bad, this is going to be my next favorite series.
If I didnt already have a table saw I would be making this one. Love it John
Really creative!
Thank you for some great design and commentary
John,
Another delightfully designed & produced piece of hardware that makes so much sense done ‘your’ way.
I may not comment much, but you & how you do it, keep me coming back!
Cheers, Kevin from Montreal.
Genius John. Thanks for inspiring us all.
This is great! You make things out of wood that I thought could only be made of metal.
I'm impressed you made it and I will be gladly wait for the plans
I havent been very excited for your videos as of late but this project has me very interested and would absolutely love to see more of it. Thanks for your hard work 🙂
Smart and rugged assembly. Looking forward to this build!
So am I, actually, for a change :)
A fine piece of engineering and construction there John. Excellent work.
Thank you, I've learnt loads watching your videos.
Was looking for a video like yours for the past year... I had to make my own tablesaw with 0 woodworking experiance. And this part the lift mechanism is the only weak spot i need to redo. Thank you.
Awesome music! =) And thanks for the insight in the workings of your diy tablesaw.
Love the video. The project is very interesting. The music is truly inspiring. Keep up the good work.
Really digging the music, your haircut, the bearings, the ply
Your skill & methods are so practical. It's a lovely system.
Awesome part. I’m very excited to see this series.
The way you make things just always amazes me.
ABSOLUTELY SUPERBLY CLEAR LOVED IT. THANKS TONY T
Great video, John. I might not build a table saw but will surely use some of the techniques that you demonstrated.
Neat! Thanks John!
Astonishing quality build, as usual. Thank you sir!
Another imaginative project. A thought: scissor jacks are cheap from auto wreckers. Using the Acme thread rod and bushings as the lead screw would provide much faster adjustments than all-thread.
I thought the same, though I'd be trying the pyramid/scissor jack with some expansion springs (set to pull the jack down) and checking slop in the mechanism before I'd trust it to hold my blade at any given height. An upside to the jack solution is that you can lift the entire motor & blade assembly vertically up and down, instead of using a pivot point as John does here. The upshot of that is you can then install a riving knife at the rear of the blade and have that vital safety device raise and lower with the blade.
WOW, awesome John!
You are definitely a mechanical minded genus. I don't know why you have haters as I enjoy all your videos. I think it's a simple case of jealousy.
He has haters?
"You are definitely a mechanical minded genus." was all that was necessary. Stop worrying about everyone else and focus on you.
Michael Fumesta Take a dose of your own medicine, you pompous twat.
Cool invention! Great video. Cant wait to see how the rest of it turns out
This is the best design I've ever seen. Come on!
Amazing !!
Waiting for the trunnion build .... they fascinate me, going to be interesting!!
Really nice job. Thank you John.
Great!! Still above my pay grade but I learn more each time. Thanks for the nice music at the end.... ;-)
Great video. Can you tell the title of the end music? Thanks
Looks great,nice job once again
Great design, John!
Awesome...I love your creativity and ingenuity...
John, your head looks very aerodynamic :-)
Great project too.
You have to be a genius! I make a lot of stuff myself, but this... WOW this is awsome!
Enjoyed watching. Can't wait to see more!
John, Thank you very much for your loyalty. I hope to see you every week with a new great project !! Thanks, Thanks and Thanks
You always have interesting videos that make me watch to the end.
