I understand completely. My husband was in hospice dying of cancer. I held his hand and said I love you for the many times that day. He said his last words on earth...I love you too. He closed his eyes and he was gone. I think of this song and it was exactly how it happened,..softly. Nine years later and I still cry for him when I hear such songs.
I'm 58yrs old with an old soul. A late starter in my endeavor. Just a local nobody here in florida, but with a big dream to keep these greats alive. Trying to pay tribute to the Great Men OF Song, including this wonderful man. I watched a few You Tube documentaries about him just to capture who he was as a person. I sense a wonderful soul, a good man and a strong man, that's is what I see. I love his voice, I love singing his songs. My purpose as a vocalist/ tribute artist is to keep this music history alive. we MUST honor and recall our history, music history is a vital role. My favorites I sing Portrait of my love, Softly, Real Live Girl, This Is The Life, You're Improvable, Yesterday, All My Lovin, On Days Like These, Over The Rainbow, and I'll Never Sing another Song. Here in the states, sing to the senior 65+ community..I usually get the "lost stare" me when I announce, "Next up a beautiful song by a wonderful mans man Mr. Matt Monro". Then I hint, We have a Sinatra..but the U.K has him! You know..Born Free or From Russia With Love" then comes the "Ohhhhhh, Ahhhh..of course". For me it's a huge WIN. They NEED to know, honor and keep to heart him, his songs, sound and accomplishments. God's blessing on your family. Thank you.

My Dad passed away two weeks ago and we laid him to rest on Friday. Myself and my cousins carried the coffin into the church to 'The Impossible Dream' and carried it out to this beautiful song. My Dad's favourite singer and now mine forever more.
So so sorry for your loss, I lost my dad in 2021 whom I adored and always will, I listen to Matt Monroe and always think of dad bless his heart, and I too will listen to Matt forever more, fantastic singer and beautiful songs. ♥️♥️

@@nancytisdall5168 If you see the Elvis Presley version of this song. In it, Elvis tells the story behind this song. It's really very sad, once you know the story.
I grew up listening to this wonderful voice, thanks to my mum. It would've been her 85th birthday today, but unfortunately 2 years ago today, she was rushed to hospital, and passed away on 30th July. We played this at her funeral (along with Matt singing "Somewhere") and it was beautiful. A beautiful, yet sad song, that brings sad, but also wonderful, memories ❤
I played this song for my late Father's Funeral. Matt was a long time favourite of my Father's and he was always singing Matt's songs. We were eating out one night, and a waitress walked up to my Father and said, "Excuse me Sir, but are you Matt Monroe" My father was so delighted that someone recognised him as Matt Monroe. My Father even sang like him. But he passed away 10 years ago. And so it was fitting that someone thought he was Matt Monroe. I play Matt's songs now, to my dying Mother, and she really appreciates listening to him. I think she finds his songs comforting. Thank you Matt. r.i.p and rest in peace.
So sorry for your lose. We had this for our mums funeral, she was an incredible mum and wife and I sadly lost my dad the same year. Life is dull without them, but the music they loved brings me some comfort xxx
Just one of the songs played at my dad's funeral. He was a big fan of Matt also Jim Reeves. an era never to be seen again. For the record he also loved Connie Francis.
The sad and untimely passing of Matt Monro left a big void in the wonderful but now forgotten songs of yesteryear. He was one of the last of the great crooners. This great and plaintive song befits our memories of him.
Matt Monro had a unique warmth in his voice that no other singer from any era could equal. He put his heart into every song he sang and it's no wonder that today he's finding new fans all over the world, while most of the singers of his era are fading into the foggy night...what a gifted singer he was!

Such a voice, smooth and seemingly effortless, simply beautiful. Plucked from obscurity as a London bus driver. His rise with fame then fall and rise again only to be taken with alcohlism and cancer taken too soon Dear Matt. RIP. This is my fav ballad of his. Xxxx❤
