Your video is perfect! Your video is exactly what I needed this morning. I'm researching laptop options (Chromebook vs. Windows) for a friend. He has two applications: (1) Edit his family financial Excel sheet(s), and (2) Watch RUclips videos. I want to recommend a Chromebook for him due to battery life, but was suspect that he would have everything he needs for his Excel needs. Your video answers this question and I'm going to recommend that he purchase a Chromebook. I'm also going to forward your video to him so that he can walk the full experience before trying to test it himself by having him sign up for a free Microsoft personal account. Plus, the added bonus of your video being that you provided him with an "offline" demonstration. Masterful! Can't thank you enough!

You're welcome. I am happy to help. When I click on the sigma, I see the standard formulas.. and more are seen at the bottom of the list. Also, if I click on the Fx, I see more there as well.

Hi there Mr Berry. I have just downloaded, registered and logged in to Excel on my Chromebook. I am having issues with the Ribbon up to. I have very limited Tabs and Commands. I noticed on your screen you have the full complement of tabs and commands available. Can you advise how I can obtain that on my version?
Additionally, I don't have the dropdown on the top bar to choose the ribbon options like the Windows version.
Within the ribbon, I find the "view options" icon when I click it, my list of commands become simplified. It should be a small icon on the banners.
Yes, its a small icon on the ribbon that I press to show/hide more commands. They put it there for folks with small screens.

hi, I dont quite get it. So why not use google spread sheet regardless of online or offline. Why do we still need to download "online excel"?
Very true. It is what I have been telling my students for years, but I still get many people who think they 'must' use excel or some Microsoft product to do their work. If you look at my channel, you will see that I promote using Google drive, docs, sheets, and slides to create, edit, and share our work.

Thank you for the comment and question. I use Google sheets in my Samsung phone. It works well enough for me to do my edits in my spreadsheets. I go over this within my Computer Literacy lessons and newer videos (after 2019).
Excellent video but i have concern sir, is there any latency while working online on excel extension. Just because i am not able to use ms office in chromebook it's deal breaker for me. So please confirm about latency while working ??
Good question. When loading large spreadsheets, I do notice that it takes about 5 seconds to load. Once it loads, it seems quick.

Yes. as soon as I go online, it will synchronize.

First off I’m not that familiar with my new chromebook or excel. I created the excel online account as you showed in this video. M trying to use a free software/excel spreadsheet for my water profile brewing beer. It’s on EZbeercalculator. It offers to download the excel version but it won’t let me do it on my chrome book. How can I use this EZbeercalculator on the online excel like you just showed? Please help!
If it is a workbook or spreadsheet file, you may download the file, then saving it in your Google Drive and open it with Excel or Google Sheets. If the file is an EXE type, then it will work on a Chromebook as EXE files are for Windows PCs only.

It is free. no cost. My students all use it in my classroom with Google Docs and both are free.

There is the Microsoft Office 365 subscriptions that you can buy from Microsoft that has more features or you can use google Sheets that has more features as well and that one is free.
Can macros work in Excel Online? I'm only used to doing so on traditional Excel desktop
Although you can't create, run, or edit VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros in Excel Online, you can open and edit a workbook that contains macros. Any existing macros will remain in the workbook, and you can open the workbook in the Excel desktop app to view and edit the macros.

@@kazzgoa The link is on your Chromebook, or other device.. yes.. but the app itself is ran from their server. You can download the spreadsheet file and use Google Sheets to edit it offline. It will even save it as an excel file, so you can do more editing with that file later in excel.

we can download the spreadsheets, we can edit them online at live.com or edit them offline with Google sheets.
When i click on any of the banners there all really small and compressed, for example i cant see 'cut' 'copy' or 'format painter' on the home banner how do i make mine like yours?
Please use the short cut... Ctrl + to make larger or ctrl - to make smaller.

You may click on file , then Home, then New. That will open a new blank spreadsheet. You can then close the other sheet that you were working on.

There is an icon for add-ins, it may be found within the Insert banner, where you can find the data-analysis tool pack.

1st I logged into my onedrive account at

from there, I click on the Microsoft app launcher, found in the upper left hand corner of the onedrive app.
I click on the green Excel icon
I select one of my excel spreadsheets
I click on "Insert"
I see add ins as the very last icon on the insert banner.

1st. you will need to get on the Internet and open the Google drive, then click on the gear icon, found within the Google drive (top right) , click settings, then click "Offline" to enable offline support. After that, you may use it offline.

How do I format cells on Chromebook? I'm right clicking but there's no option to select it. Please help
select or highlight the cells, then select the format that you wish from the tools.

One way is to Highlights the cells then , select the design tab, in the table styles group, click the more button to see more style options. Select the style that you want and click apply to finish.

Are you using the Excel extension as seen in the first part of the video? The tools should be there. Another way is to log into your Microsoft account from within their onedrive web site and open excel there, then load your spreadsheet.

This video is very helpful, I have a final exam requires to use this. Where could I find the data analysis tab?
I have added it by going to File> Options> Add-ons> Manage add-ins .
Then click on Analysis ToolPak.
There's no option I could use in the option tab. The only thing I saw was "Regional Format Settings" I think it's because I'm using chromebook rather that a desktop that's why it's very complicated.

Is VBA or the Developer tab available on Excel Online?
I normally do not use the VBA... Let me check..
On Excel 365, we would click on the File tab, go to Options > Customize Ribbon.
Under Customize the Ribbon and under Main Tabs, select the Developer check box. But it does not have that option in the online version. I just checked it. So, although you can't create, run, or edit VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros in this online version of Excel, you can open and edit a workbook that contains macros. Any existing macros will remain in the workbook, and you can open the workbook in the Excel desktop app to view and edit the macros.

Yes. That would be done within your Google Account settings, and then the other apps like Google Sheets would follow. If you are using Microsoft apps, then change the language within the Microsoft settings and Excel would follow.

Thank you for the question. This version has fewer "research" tools than the paid version, but it is very useful and has all of the tools and features that I use in my spreadsheets for work.

Go to Insert > Header or Footer.

You may turn on viewing the header and footer under the "view" tab.

Does this version have data analysis
I just opened on of my spreadsheets on my Chromebook using this version of Excel and in the top center, there is a search box, keyed in data analysis into that box and it opened a side bar with "data analysis ideas" that has different tools.

Hi. I just checked it on my Chromebook. This is what I did. I went to "www.onedrive.com" That is Microsoft's storage solution. From there I opened Excel and one of my past spreadsheets. I clicked on "file" and I see the "Save as" option there. Within Google Sheets, I can click on "file" then "download as.."

Clicking on an excel spreadsheet within the files app, opens Google sheets. The same is true from within Google Drive. To open excel, please click on the Microsoft Excel app, then click on file, then open, to view the files.

You can have both versions of Excel. The free version that does not, but the paid version of 365 does.
How can I add together two cells containing a time each while using the formula concatenate? example: A1=01:10:00; B1=02:10:00; C1= concatenate("the total time is";" "; A1+B1"). I am doing this, but the formula does not see the time as 'time' and it is giving me weird number instead! any tips please!

Ok.. Please goto onedrive.com. from there click on the Microsoft app launcher, then click on the Excel icon. It should open to a new blank spreadsheet as seen in my videos.

Have you done this to enable Excel 365 Macros?
Open Excel.
Click File.
Choose Options.
Select Trust Center.
Click Trust Center Settings.
Choose the Macro Settings tab.
Select your Macro security level, then click OK.

@@treblerebel2362 There are a few options to do this.
One, you may send a folder containing all of the files related to the project by doing this on a windows PC:
1. Open File Explorer and locate the folder that is holding all of the files in question.
2. Right-click on the folder you want to attach.
3. Hover your cursor over "Sent to" and click on "Compressed (zipped) folder."
4. Double-check that the compression has completed and that you have a new folder.
5. Open Outlook and create a "New message."
6. Click on the paperclip icon in your message window and click "Upload and share."
7. Locate your compressed folder in the pop-up window that appears.
8. Select the compressed folder once you've located it and click "Open."
9. If you receive a message that reads, "We're having trouble loading your folder," choose "Change location."
10. Click "Upload" and attach the compressed folder.
11. The compressed folder will appear attached to your email.
Other way is to attach the files the same way as attaching a single file, but simply repeating the process for each file.
...and other way is to use the shift key to highlight multiple files when attaching items. Then when all of the files are highlighted, click attach to attach all of the highlighted files.
