    mine has just done it. I phoned them and no spare engineer available so she said its not my fault just leave it..free electricity it is then

      This happened to me, for a good 6 months I didn’t pay nothing..then last week it just randomly started working again, no debts😅

      @@xx-lk2vl Get in touch with an obudsman, thats what we did. We got told we owe nothing because it's not our fault and we don't want a smart meter (which is another sales tactic they will use to sort the issue). We can't have anyone in the house due to COVID and me being vulnerable so don't know if this will be the same for everyone but basically they can't check the meter remotely or get us to if it has no display. We got told they have no pre-payment meters in stock (not our problem) so we'd have to wait but we offered what we pay normally per month and they refused and said we can't charge you as we don't know how much you are using. We got our supplier to send us that in writing that we owe nothing and the Ombudsman to do the same and he has a copy of that email. Protect yourself as they are all sly and will try and do you if you have no evidence.

    Mine is still f**ked, it's been over a year now trying to get it sorted but all they can say is it needs changing for a smart meter, I keep telling them no not happening and the saga continues. I like winding them up on the other end of the line asking why are they trained to deal with customers who have concerns about smart meters, it's quite hilarious hearing them crumble under their own contradicting answers! They assure me it'll be set to "dumb mode" I say what's the point in fitting a smart metre then? They usually hang up on me! xD

      Bit of an update to my old comment. I finally had my meter replaced today, with a key metre, not a smart meter. The reason they finally replaced our analogue meter was because my Mrs said on the phone to EDF that she would buy one off eBay and get someone to fit it! xD I think they sh*t themselves with the possible blowback and news attention they would have got to why someone would go to such lengths and end up electrocuting themselves, Lol! So yeah, if you don't want a smart meter, just say you'll buy one off eBay and get someone to fit it!

      @@chrisgidley8946 Didn't need too,. They were fitting new bathrooms and showers.... It was due to a lightning storm, it knocked out many people's electricity and everyone was told that it wasn't their problem so they gave me a new meter and wrote off the extended bill..... I praise that thunderstorm on a daily basis lol..., Everyone around here that was effected didn't have to repay a thing...... Meter kept running until the new bathrooms were fitted so win win

    Thanks so much mate. Been following this since my meter done the same after a brief powercut a month ago. It won`t accept anything from the electric top-up key. Electric is still on and my man cave is warm as fuck all the time now. Aye :-)

      @@LiuHeiYing yes, the pre payment meter is totally blank and it's been like that for well over a year now, there was a power cut in our street, when the power came back on the meter was blank and I've never topped it up once..

      @@earthworm2590 they'll have a job! I have since changed electricity suppliers and will continue to do so every 6 months. so if they ever do catch up with me they will only be able to back bill me the duration of my current contract.

      @@NichoTBE I did yes, but its all done by computer system no one physically checks it. If I stayed with the same company and I wasn't topping the key up it would probably flag up but even then it would take them a couple of years to catch on. I know someone else in the same situation and they've had free power for 7 or 8 years now.

      @@TeslasTeaParty The person you know who has had it free for 7-8 years, are they also swapping suppliers every 6 months? Eventually you're going to run out of suppliers and have to join one you already left eh. I've been topping up my key but its maxed out at £300 now and wont take anymore cash so I'm wondering how long till they force me to swap to a smart meter which is what im trying to avoid. Its nice to get free elecy for a bit tho ngl.

    Have had this happen to ours after a power cut and have been told the meter goes into always active, so no topping up for a month until they come and fit the new one.

    We had this problem and for years we had free electric even when we told them, then one day they busy the door down illegally and said they had a warrant which now I now I could have challenged. They were trying to accuse us of tampering with meter but we told them otherwise and they realised that they had made a mistake. They were trying to bill us for the lot so we just switched suppliers and fucked them off. They can't do anything because they know they broke the law.

      @@endlessworkout2154 not sure if they can see what you have used, they will probley come around for the metre check and see its not working a try and push a smart meter on to you, I didn't have to pay back any money and I had free electricity for nearly a year. So don't worry just report it to your supplier company if haven't Done already and wait for a response. Q

      "burst the door down " my arse. I used to be involved in getting into properties when the occupant would not allow access. We employ a top class trained locksmith who either picks the lock or drills out the lock pins . We then put back a new lock and leave you notice on the front door where to collect the new keys ..simple , so less of the gross exaggeration .

      Was already a different supplier at new place,and key in meter so went with them for a while then changed to cheapest tariff. Best of luck.

    Thanks for this vid. Had a power cut in our block of flats, now my pre pay meter screen is blank. Contacted Eon and an engineer can only come out at the end of the month. To be fair they did assure me my electricity won't go off.

      @@Max_Output no i didn't get charged for the electric i used. If i remember rightly they actually put £10 credit on my meter in case i had any issues topping it up which i didn't.

    I've just came across your video as I have the exact same problem. Did you manage to get the same metre installed? Also we have been told to keep topping up the metre. However, I don't really want to do this as I can't see if it's been taken off the key or not. Was you ever charged for any electric you went into credit for?

    I had this and never topped up for 12 months. I kept contacting and recorded dates times. I paid £26 because I said I had tried numerous times to sort it. No leg to stand on. I kept saving my electric money still in an account incase.. close to free. Energywatch is fab.

    I find my British Gas electric pre payment key meter cuts us off at 10:23am in the summer and 9:23am in the winter if the money runs out very late afternoon early evening at night or early morning but not at all on Sundays don't know the times it stops cutting you off late afternoon though, in winter it hasn't cut me off after 5:19 pm though

    I’ve just realised I’ve got the same prob, just rang Scottish power and was assured my electricity supply won’t go off, however, if I don’t want a big bill I’ll have to keep topping up. I asked for a replacement and was told that I can only have a smart meter as it’ll be compulsory by 2024. It was the weirdest conversation I’ve ever had with a company that I rent and purchase from, he was full of attitude puffs and sighs.... this can’t be right, anyone else having similar attitude from Scottish power

      Hello, yes the power won't go off, I didn't top up my meter and I didn't get a big bill after they replaced mine, mine got replace to a smart meter, only because they told me they couldn't get hold of any key meters, I smell bullshit lol, save ya money don't bother topping up lol and yes most of the Utility company's have cunts working for them. But not all lol do well

    I am having an issue with mine. My one won't even light up, also my gas meter has debt on it. Whenever I try to contact scottish power they just par me off. I am having nightmares with them to the point I have had to report them to ofgem, I hope you have recovered from the rum and coke alright. (Given it was 2 years ago) lol

    Hi, how does your energy supplier know if you haven't topped up your prepayment meter when its broken? Do they read this from topping up the key/card? Or does the meter itself some how tell them? thanks.

      Unless its a smart meter then they only know when you actually top up, when the cashier takes your key and inserts it in the machine at the shop. I think thats their only point of contact with the meter (other than physically coming inside your house).

      It’s simple mate you take your key to the shop, give him money, he puts it into your key, and then you have the amount you paid in your key, when you put it back into the meter, and run your equipment, so then it’s starts clocking down, they have no info on your meter, the only way they know if you use electric or no is by topping up your key, if you left your home and gone to holiday for about 2/3 months, and you hardly had any money in your meter, they will send you letter saying that you might have faulty meter, and they need to send to you engineer to fix the problem, if you not answering them, then they will start thinking that you by pass your meter.

    This has just happened to us! Had the council carrying out electricity checks and they turned the power off and it’s been showing the same thing ever since! I’ve tried to phone British Gas and they said they would send an engineer out and let me know when they’d be coming out but haven’t heard anything since. I don’t want to end up with a huge bill if they don’t fix it right away, especially if the top up payments won’t work! Any suggestions or guidance? Surely it’s not our fault if we have reported it and they’ve failed to send out an engineer/fix it?

      You won't end up with a huge bill if it's prepayment meter. It happened to me with the blank screen, it took 2 months before it was fixed and they didn't expect any money from me for the duration that it was not working.
      If you still have electricity going through your property then don't worry too much lol

    Happened to me a few years back - one night there was a minor power failure in my block, and a number of the flats on my block got this. I had to report this to British Gas when this happened, and then they came about a week later, they put in a new meter, but had to turn off the fuse box beforehand, and the beauty of it is, I didn't get charged, they just gave me a new key, programmed with the remaining credit that I had, before this happened....

      @@stuartchester7414 Not true. My meter was blank for nearly three years. They kept pushing me to have a smart meter fitted but I kept telling them to fu*k off. They finally replaced my meter with a regular key meter and never to this day got charged for those three years of free electric. I could have strung them along for longer if I wanted until I said to them I'd fit one myself from ebay! They came out a day or so later and like magic they had a regular key meter for me, even though they kept saying for nearly three years they had none in stock. They're a bunch of lying nasty f**ks mate.

    Just happened to my meter called them out swapped meter for new one have to ring supplier for refund on key credit job done,if it’s not damaged they have to fix it.

    Had local power cut Friday. Put £50 on key and can't because my meter looks like yours. I won't be reporting this. Not my problem. Electric is on, I have no issues 😂😂

      No, im still 9n the broken meter. No letters no knock at the door. Its just happened to my parents meter for the second time. There house diff area. My mum will over worry and get hers fixed for the second time. They fixed hers 3 minth ago the first time. Tried to blag her into smart meter. Luckily my grumpy stepdad told them to bugger off, they would stay with payment meter lol.

    Haven't got the exact same issue as yourself, however, have an issue with my PP meter, were the piece of s*** meter seemingly can't distinguish when it's in credit and when it's went into the emergency and subsequently when the meter starts beeping saying I have only a quid on credit left and I go and top up ....it takes that amount( one pound still in credit) OFF the amount I am topping up with instead of adding it ....i.e one pound in credit ...meter starts beeping ... top up 20 quid straight away and it gives me a total of 19 quid credit on meter?...Been given all kinds of rubbish by way of a response from supplier and they simply refuse ( asked several times) to come out and check it .....even told them that I will pay for the non-emergency call out if meter deemed not to be faulty. ........They won't, and they do sweet F all and so far all they have done is given me a couple of very small compensatory Goodwill gesture amounts, which I don't believe comes anywhere near the amount this meter has wrongly taken off me, during this time that this has been going on.... and is still going on. Trying to talk with someone about this and can't get through to anybody waiting time 35 mins? says the automated voice ...sure it is? and their online chat system has no one on the other end either. All in all an utter load of S*** and this is before they raise their prices.....What a total joke these companies truly are.

And then top up again start fresh maybe.. or let the £1 go down to say 10p then top up its might take 10p of your new top up instead of £1 let me know brother....

    Same problem was told the longer it's left the bigger bill you will have to pay,because the electricity doesn't run out when meter is in that mode.!! they couldn't say how much credit left either but, theyr changing meter a week on also tried to get us to have a smart meter but no way.
    I hope you get/got sorted before your holiday and that the info about elec not running out is correct.good luck..!

      Hello, yeah electric hasn't run out yet, I believe it's been about a year now lol and holiday has been and gone, they are trying to get us to have a smart meter too. They called the other day and not to sure if we have to have one now... but all I could do was let them know the situation and I've left it to them, do well. !!

    i also had this problem after a Thunderstorm , had free electric for about 18mths , during that time the metre reading guy had call to my house 3 times , and seen the metre was faulty and said they would install a smart metre , on 2 different days i waited for them to change the metres over and they failed to turn up , EVENTUALLY they replaced my metre with a old metre , AND HAD I CHEEK to charge me £900 which we challenged and told them it was their fault my arrears built up so much and we werent liable , so we ended up settling for £400..

    I’ve just moved into my first house. When I called for a key I told them the screen didn’t work I just assumed it was because I didn’t have a key. Now I know. I don’t know whether to call back and inform them of this since I already technically have by accident told them.

    Just come across this whilst trying to find a solution to the problem, I've had the same crap from utility warehouse telling me to let it drain out and they will do a emergency call out, but that's no good to me when I need to do the food shop and I ain't got a clue when it's gonna shut off with food in freezer they couldn't care less anyway I was gonna get inside the meter and disconnect all the wiring and reconnect it and see if it reboots but now I've seen comments saying the electric runs freely should I just leave it? Mine's ended up exactly like this with a power cut last night

      Same happened to us the other week, blank screen and free electric! I phoned Utility Warehouse and they are useless, saying it needs to be replaced with a smart metre, which is total crap. I refuse to have one of those deathtraps in my house so they basically told me to piss off! The woman on the phone was very evasive when I was asking questions about all this.

    Having this problem too SSEN did a power outage fukd my electric meter now a blank green screen. Eon next said cant do anything till credit runs out but the machine doesnt even work. SSEN said not their problem. So no idea but the supply still on.

    I accidentally broke the glass my old disc meter, the seals are still in place but the disc is exposed, am I likely to be charged for meter tampering? This is why I am reluctant to report it

    Looks like this is the thread for this issue. The have sent the letter for the warrant and they will be coming. Should I just change suppliers, and what figures do you give them? I've left the meter running with blank screen for a few years, but I don't want to be liable for the cost, when it wasn't my fault.

    I got the same thing just a blank screen I've moved in to a new property I've asked EDF to come out to put in a smart meter. But they can't get in the fuse box on the 2nd floor and want me to to contact Hackney Council and get them to meet up together because they have the key for the fuse box. How can you work for a electric company and not have the right equipment. Fine I'll just keep getting free electricity.

    I know this is late reply but if you knew roughly how much you have,... and it wasn't that much, you could run it out by using loads of stuff like running hoover tumble dryer everything etc till it's gone, callbtheem out etc etc blah.... Just a thought probably stupid but I spose I've never got much credit on mine so that'd be easy.... Hope you had nice holiday....

    This happened to me on the 08/07/2023 during the thunder storm and my light bulbs turned off . I assumed the bulbs were bad and I was in the process of changing them, but they came back on. At this point, I decided to check my meter, because I have caught my energy company doing something that was criminal by running down to emergency while I was away for the weekend with all electrical appliances unplugged for safety reasons. I discovered the blank meter with a steady amber light.

    This has happened to mine today following a power cut and just to top it off my energy supplier doesnt have a phone number you have to talk to them via email and dont get a response for 2 working days.. has anyone 1 electric just gone off?? Im freaking out as i have 3 small children.

      Have you still got power ?? If not call national grid they should be able to help you if you cant get power back on. If you still have power and just a blank box then just record how long it's been off and keep a record of you trying to resolve them problem and make sure in your email you wont to file a complaint if they dont help as they only have 8 week to resolve it or you can take them to the ombismon and they will look into it for you. Hope it's been sorted for you now.

    Same happend to us, we bought an air fryer and when we switched the air fryer on the switches tripped in the meter box, when we flipped them back on there was no balance showing on the screen and its been like that for 2 years free electric. We havnt phoned up or anything but we are due to move house in 2 weeks so trying to figure out what to do to stay under the radar. Any suggestions?

      @@JohnnyB6969 Contact Octopus they sent a guy out.. but said there was asbestos on the meter to replace it he'd have to remove it to replace it.
      But said that cluld lead or it being airborne I've got long COVID so I said I wasn't comfortable with that..
      So said they'd be back in touch to send someone with proper equipment but I haven't heard anything in over 2 months 🤔

      I got same issue,4 months now like this,anyone know if when they do finally replace meter whether they can legally hit us with a bill for the time using the free electric? They sent a smart meter engineer to me but I've always said no to a smart meter when I've been in touch with them ,yet they still send engineer to fit a smart meter! I've heard government seemingly gives them £50 for every smart meter they fit,don't know if it's true though

    Mines been blank for about 2 and a half years after a power cut, we’ve not contacted British Gas about it , my Mrs tops up the key at the post office every now and again by £10… currently the keys saying we have £380 credit… we have a 3 bedroom flat with storage heaters and electric boiler etc 🔥. the women at the post office always says “ oh you do keep you meter topped up , you never knw when you’ll get a rainy day “🤣

      I call them up and said what has happened after a 2 hour wait!!! they told me at the mo the can’t help and have made a note on the system and it’s very unlikely the meter will
      Turn off but I had top up to the max £249 and got another £49 on the key as worried about things a head!!!

    omg I just came on here to check if anyone had this issue. ive had free electric for 3 years (apparently) I told them in sept 2020 that after the power cut I have had the same issue like youve had in this video, but they only started sending me letters in 2021 about changing my metre and someone came out to check the metre in october 2021 and said it just needed a new battery nothing to worry about. I missed many letters that they wrote after this for many reasons being away etc and then 3 men with magistrates “warrants” showed up saying they need to change the metre or they will get locksmiths. I called eon and they said as it hasnt been topped up in 3 years they need to change it get a metre reading or they will send me an estimation bill. Wth? I told them years ago they didnt seem to care for ages and now they want to try and change the metre over a year later and charge me. They could have “broken in” and sorted it ages ago if it was so important. I know you said you wouldnt pay the bill they sent you but have you changed your mind and any advice on this whole matter. I dont want a smart metre now and I dont think i should have to pay the bill either???

      @@michaeljay6468 Well I made them change the metre and I also refuse to pay for the £1000 (how precise) bill that was cleary automated. It was eons mistake as the metre was faulty which they were aware of, this also means they couldnt prove my usage so the bill was just an estimation/ assumption and therefofe it’s in dispute.

    Hay up all, So this exact meter & exact same fault has just happened to me. I just wanted to be sure that the consensus is definitely that its will never cut off even a long time after the credit should have run out (even though you can't see the credit) ? It's a "stuck on" meter forever, until they fix or swap it out?

      It will never run put of power and hopefully it will be replaced just with smart meter when your turn comes and bill they can estimate from past history.
      Also if u keep topping up key with some money hopefully that will be your bill.
      Hopefully it will be a fair bill

    I wish I had this issue because I work for a gas and electricity supplier and all u need to do if u have this problem is change supplier every few months its easy and isn't any hassle to do just spend 5 mins on comparison website. When u change supplier for the first few months they won't check for any top ups as when u switch supplier u will most likely have money still on ur meter from ur old supplier. Also if ur supplier is a small supplier then even if they send u a bill u just don't pay it because most likely they will not have a debt recovery path but don't quote me on that I know my company hasn't. Does anyone know how to make this happen?

It’s so mad and frustrating when I’ve told people you have to watch trailer Park boys they watch one or two episodes and think I’m mental or something. funny as fuck I might go back to rewatch them all again didn’t rate the movie that much but the series and episodes had me in Hysterics enjoy watching if you ain’t seen I’m all yet. Bubbles I think is the conscience of all of them and he’s funny as hell to them glasses 😂😂. Don’t no if sons of anarchy is something you’d like bit more serious but it took me about three episodes to get into it and its bloody excellent👍👍☮️

    I have the same situation. From about 10 days ago, someone came and checked the meter and said that it had stopped working. I asked him if it was dangerous, he said it isn't. After a week, someone else came checked the meter, and wrote some stuff down on some device then later told me he will contact me soon about it. What I want to know is that if they are not contacting me and I am not contacting them, is it legal for them to open a court case on me, or am I just fine??? I'm very worried about this.

      Anybody got any tips about this problem and should I call them or not, though they have come to my house to see the meter they did not do anything about it TWICE!! On top of that, it was during covid. They said it was broken but no response after that. If you can help please reply.

      Over two years here. But my supplier decided (no one contacted me) I no longer lived there as I hadn't topped up. Sent me a final bill which I called to contest and we discover my account is closed as I moved out, even though I didn't and told them so. So now I have a blank meter and no account. No idea what this means now. My neighbour has the same blank meter but he has phoned them over and over and gets nowhere "everyone is switching to smart meters soon anyway, just top up your key as usual"

      @@ImCNR The bill they sent was for just shy of £500, but was for a period over a year previous to the sending of the bill (and an estimate at that... applied to a property with a prepayment system). This is not permitted so I refused the debt collectors. Have heard nothing since. I expect they will eventually knock and insist I make a new account. Fighting seems inevitable as I believe they do this to trap you into repaying debt making it impossible to switch supplier - as they did to me in 2005 after 3 years stress of no bills (the reason I was forced onto prepay) despite emailing and snailmailing them etc.

    This has just happened to me!! I spent the whole day on the phone and on their stupid Web chat! I feel like an idiot because I never registered with the supplier since moving in 5yrs ago but coz I was panicking that I was gona run out, they now have my details when I cud've had free lecky...
    They said I should contact them when I'm without electricity, which is sooo dumb. Told them I have medication that needs to be refrigerated, how can I w a i t to have nothing running, its dangerous for me!! Sheesh!!

      it does not end with 999 it ends 99 blank .The blank digit drops down which means the meter jams. Giving it a hefty clout on the top or sides will restart it.It only does this on Sangamo Weston mechanical meters. I ve been a meter reader for 20 years and restarted hundreds of these. I ve not told the suppliers unless the occupier is either a bearded twat ( I hate these cunts ) or owns a BMW or an Audi ( I hate these twats even more ) So with these tossers I report to the supplier for them to backbill.Plus the meter is exchanged to a smart meter so it can t happen again

    We had this problem for 3 years now... Oops we just are type of people to not say anything but this happened during when someone came to our home and they were fixing something? Wiring? Donno! 😂 But that when it stopped working and it went blank so we just left as that now today we had someone coming in and taking a picture of our meter but worried what's gonna happen next

    I have the same problem with the EDF meter precisely the same meter, I call to them, sent an email to customer service, and used chat on my personal EDF page, but no reaction, they told me that nobody would cut me electricity, and must wait, so far free electricity flow!

      @@eddy9k I don't know how this work, I reported to EDF about a blank display, that I cannot top-up, they promised me that nobody will cut off my power, so I have endless free electricity until engineers visit me, but nobody visited me so far, since my first report two months ago! YES I have free electricity because I have a prepayments reader, not bill via direct debit.

      @@ImCNR EDF totally ignored me, nobody visited me despite my info about the problem via emails, LiveChat and phones. I filed a complaint against EDF to Ombudsman Service, in the case, EDF would later accuse me of unauthorised electricity usage or send me bills even though I have prepayments PAY AS YOU GO. I have had electricity without top up almost two months!

    I had my meter stop working because they say it was an electrical fault ? I think it has been engineered from the electrical supplier so as to force me to accept a smart meter because I refuse to ! It shows no reading but I have kept records as to how much I pay and when I should pay . They have told me that I should just continue to top up normally until they can get an engineer in to sort it out due to the fact that they have no engineers due to the Plandemic ? After waiting +- 6 months I have phoned them about coming to repair it but they insist they cannot repair it but are able to replace it with a smart meter ? To me they are playing on this and what they have done is stopped the reading signal so as I would feel there is no other option because they told me they are able to see my usage and payment from their end ?? Anyway I can have the meter checked for this and see if it is still able to receive a signal and if a signal is not being sent ?

      If you are still having this issue. Get in touch with an obudsman, thats what we did. We got told we owe nothing because it's not our fault and we don't want a smart meter (which is another sales tactic they will use to sort the issue). We can't have anyone in the house due to COVID and me being vulnerable so I don't know if this will be the same for everyone but basically they can't check the meter remotely or get us to check if it has no display. We got told they have no pre-payment meters in stock (not our problem) so we'd have to wait but we offered to pay what we pay normally per month on a standing order and they refused and said we can't charge you as we don't know how much you are using. Fair enough but we offered and have the evidence. We got our supplier to send us that we owe nothing in writing and to send a copy to the Ombudsman so he has a copy of that email/letter too. Protect yourself as much as you can as they are all sly and will probably try and do you if you have no evidence later down the line.
