This brought tears in my eyes. His character really is special and not only because he is smart and charming and fun to read (now even to watch) but especially because of this: he always tries the best for others
I shipped them too, but after reading all the books I'm glad that at least in the books he gets another love interest, someone who fits way better to him.
I love him as Nikolai but the only one he's meant to be with is Zoya I don't understand why Alina is still there like they ruined her and Mal and I want Zoya to be happy she deserves love and someone nice like Nikolai
It's not permanent. It's clearly a midpoint for their arcs, no character has been ruined. Malina need a break so that Mal can have time to himself and grow as an individual. Alina needs time to experience being in the Ravnkan court and the corruption of her power so that losing it means something and her book ending is satisfying. Nikolina need more time to develop as friends and with unrequited/confused feelings, it's super important for both of them. Nikolai's "demon" arc and struggles need to be introduced properly. And we need time to get into Zoya as a character and explore her dynamic with Nikolai. There's no point in rushing any of that and it would have felt unearned at the end of S2. They're merely shuffling around elements of books 2 and 3 to coincide with KOS. That doesn't mean that they are permanently straying from canon, just bringing new potential and fleshing out elements of the book that were sped through.

@@caitlinb35 I strongly agree,
@@caitlinb35 yeah but Alina and Mal never seperated in the books but I guess that's what we get for them rushing both books into 8 episodes
