Some clerics don't have Heavy Armor proficiency. For those, you should prioritize DEX instead of STR, though you can stop at 14. Unless you plan on grabbing Heavy Armor through a feat (you cannot get it through multiclassing, as Cleric is the only class that can give Heavy Armor Proficiency when you multiclass into it)

In addition, take the Warcaster feat, if you can fit it in. EDIT: But people below are right, the distinction between types of clerics is important to make: Dex v Str v Con prioritization depends on your domain and your armor proficiencies.

You could also start as a Fighter, then multiclass into Cleric. That gives you heavy armor and martial weapon proficiency, as well as proficiency in Con saves, important for concentration.
Also, if you are planning on going with heavy armor, you can stop increasing strength once you get 15 or 16 (15 for plate armor, 16 to increase the modifier).

What I like about medium armor for a table that uses point buy is that you only need an even 14 rather than Strength that needs a 15 (with my OCD wanting it to be a 16). An Arcana Cleric human, for example, can start off 11/14/14/12/16/12 with positive stats across the board & good damage at any range thanks to Potent Spellcasting & any ranged/CQC cantrip you want while sporting 19 AC. By level 8 you can have 20 Wisdom with your cantrips dealing 2D8+5.
Alternatively, run 8/14/14/12/16/10 with the Human Variant for Magic Initiate: Cleric to make a quarterstaff deal 2D8+10 (effectively a 1D8+5 with Extra Attack) with Green Flame Blade at level 8 with a 2D8+10 bounce of fire damage to nearby enemies.

Here's my take, as someone who's favorite class is Cleric:
    1. Wisdom first, always. Maxing this out will really help with spellcasting.
Con second. Clerics can frontline way better than other casters, so having high Con for saves against effects, spells, and for concentration are vitally important. Doesn't need to get maxed out, but should be second highest.
Str or Dex third, it depends on whether your subclass gains Heavy Armor or not. If using Heavy Armor, Str should reach a 15 at some point so that you can use Plate. For Medium, you only need a 14 in Dex for the +2 AC. You CAN use a feat to grab Heavily Armored, but that takes away from taking things like Resilient, War Caster, Metamagic Adept, or the all-important ASI's.
Int and Cha are more for roleplaying than anything else, and I always pick one as a dump stat when using Point Buy
    2. Always prepare Healing Word. Being a prepared caster opens up lots of options for Clerics, but Healing Word should never leave your spell list, even at high levels. This is essential for bringing back unconscious players, and keeping the party standing, and has singlehandedly saved multiple parties that I've been apart of. Cure Wounds is great, but Healing Word's range and action economy are unrivaled.
    3. Get experimental. Being a prepared caster also allows you to go wild with spell preparation. Take the time to switch some spells around after Long Rests. When I first started, I rarely shifted anything unless it was absolutely necessary. Nowadays, I take a far more proactive approach, and it helps to keep me engaged with situations, and pay attention to what spells would be best for that day. Get funky!
    4. Healing should be a secondary focus. Support is really the Cleric's bread-and-butter. Healing spells should only be used as emergency pick-me-ups, like Healing Word, Aid, and Mass Cure Wounds, or as large out of combat healing, like Prayer of Healing and Aura of Vitality.
Your slots should mostly be focused on buffing your team by using spells like Bless, Shield of Faith on the Pally with an already jacked AC, Warding Bond on the squishy-little-bastard Rogue, etc.
You can also use lots of damage spells to great effect. Guiding Bolt is probably your best spell here, at least to start. Attack roll, good damage and damage type, good range, and it buffs the next attack against an enemy. Spiritual Weapon is another fantastic standout, essentially giving you an extra attack, every round, for 1 minute, at the cost of a Bonus Action and a 2nd level spell slot. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Spirit Guardians. Fantastic damage, aura spell, debuffs enemies within, and decent range, this spell has saved my hide more times than I could count.
All-in-all, Clerics are wicked versatile. Go crazy with these holy bois! Have a blast, it's what your deity would want.

A little tip as a Cleric player, one of the main weaknesses I see when people play one is mobility, sometimes your party break positioning or the enemy teleports to the backline, and so you cannot really do much for healing since you have to focus on defending yourself first.
For this, one spell that I really like to use is Summon Celestial, the Avenger Variant, with him, you can mount on him since it's large, and you can consider it a Smart mount, it will always act after you and have 40ft. of flying movement, which you may use to fly, dash or disengage easily into the air, and if don't have anything else, you can use it's attack action to deal two or more attacks with 2d6+spell level +2 damage up to 150ft.
Just be careful with it's health, since it may suffer with AOE damage

Races that give you teleport or ways to get misty step usually helps with that quite a lot. Also, planning ahead what to do in general situations, preparing ranged healing spells and positioning yourself in the mid of the combat or 20-30ft close to your friends helps to solve this problem too.

As much as i enjoy heavy armor, unless you are a dwarf, go for medium armor. You will be able to improve your AC earlier and it will be totally fine to dump strenght, get 14 dex and never look to dexterity again (unless you really want to increase it for some reason, like being a multiclass or something). This will help with your initiative (which is good to throw a control spell early on) and will spare you points in the point buy system (also it helps with the common dex saves).
And about your survivability: grab shield and absorb elements in some way, either by rece and/or background features, by feats or multiclass. A cleric with a normal ac of 19 (14 dex + scale armor + normal shield) being able to get 24 with the Shield spell is great, and absorb elements is always great.
Having a spell or some way to increase your mobility can also help if you don't get such thing from your subclass, so little teleports (like the shadar-kai one), getting a hold of misty step, flying speed or something helps a lot.

Because as my friend said "how are you suposed to challenge gods with a 15 in strength". But clerics don't rely on modifiers much in combat outside of healing so one of my players hsve been fighting with the feeling of being not needed. It's been fun figuring out different ways to fix that problem.

    As a seasoned Cleric player:
Healing spells are mostly worthless. At least get healing word(and variants) and healing spirit. These are literally the only healing you need. Why? Removing the threat thats doing damage will prevent damage in the first place. So hold person, hold monster, banishment, and other control/damage spells are wildly better than healing.
Wisdom, con, str in that order, youre going to find yourself as a common target. Con helps with hp and concentration saves. Pick up scrolls of healing magic. This way youre not consuming a readied spell space. Warcaster is a must, so first possible chance, get it.

Building Dex is better than building Str. A +2 Dex offers the same ac until you get Plate around tier 3 and grants a +2 to Dex saves and initiative during that time. It also allows you to build a +3 Con rather than a +2 because you only need a 14 Dex and not a 15 Str. Having both Dex saves and initiative be 3 points higher while also getting +1 hp per level and +1 to Con saves for concentration is leagues better than being able to equip Plate. Even for Clerics that do get Heavy Armor proficiency it’s better to spec into Dex. You can go Str if you’d like to for your character but it’s not building optimally.

  • @simondiamond9628

WIS. & CON. first definitely, but the rest comes down to whether or not the PC:
    A. will have heavy armor proficiency or not, and
    B. whether or not stats were rolled or gained via point buy.
Unfortunately, one massive glaring weakness that Clerics have, just like Bards, is the lack of an attack roll based cantrip. Their "best" attack cantrips are Sacred Flame and Toll the Dead, which are Dex. and Wis. Saves, respectively.
That, unfortunately, causes two problems for the cleric:
    1. It puts the burden of success into the hands of the enemy, and
    2. Both Dex. & Wis. saves are fairly common. (Dex. is usually prioritized as the most common saving throw, and Wis. isn't that far behind it.)
More aptly, at higher levels, due to those stat scores in enemy monsters being as high as they are, after reaching about mid tier 2, their effectiveness tends to drop off significantly.
Oddly enough, for those above reasons, I'd prioritize Charisma over Dex., generally. Not only does this suit them lore-wise (as Clerics are generally Pastors/Preachers first, and a Preacher without a congregation is no Preacher at all), but this opens them up to Cha. based multiclassing as either a Warlock or Sorcerer (Warlock being preferred for Eldritch Blast), in order to cover this weakness.
The only exception I would make to the above rule would be if the Cleric subclass has access to an attack roll based cantrip already in their arsenal that allows you to work off of your Wisdom score, such as Arcana domain clerics.

Assuming your subclass grants Heavy Armor
    - Don't need more than 15 to meet reqs

You can absolutely play in heavy armor without worrying about meeting the Reqs. You'd just be casting more long range spells

Caster clerics like light clerics are east to optimise and choosing strength as your second high stat is flat out wrong for them. 14 dex, high wisdom and high constitution. If you go with variant human, I recommend Resilient Constitution.

  • @danielmccoy2023
    @danielmccoy2023 Год назад

There are a few problems with this guide. First, you want to put constitution as the second highest, followed by a dex of 14. Not everyone has heavy armor proficiency, and even those who do benefit more from a higher initiative rather than 1 extra AC (and you spend much less on armor this way, too). The only healing spell I would generally prepare would be Healing Word, which is good because you can easily pick up allies in combat as a bonus action, much better than Cure Wounds, which takes an action, range of touch, and will rarely heal you enough to survive more hits than Healing Word would heal you for outside of maybe level 1. Out of combat healing should be left to someone with Goodberry, which has better average healing than both of those spells (if it isn't inconvenient, you might consider picking it up yourself (druid dip maybe?), especially if you're a Life Cleric who can heal 40 hp on one casting). Revivify is nice to have on hand as an emergency as well. You should mainly focus on control and maybe some support. Spirit Guardians is nice to keep enemies away from you and other casters, but Spiritual Weapon's damage leaves much to be desired, and therefore is a trap you will want to avoid because it just isn't worth the slot. Also, you should almost never run into melee as a cleric, especially if you haven't dipped to take Shield, because even compared to other melee builds who already have insultingly low DPR, you will barely be able to do any damage at all, and you'll just put yourself in unnecessary risk, even with Spirit Guardians.

Healing is not important in an optimized cleric. The healing spells you’ll be taking usually are the ranged ones (healing word, mass cure wounds) as you can use those to pick up your friend from being downed and bring them back into the fight.
You’ll be abusing control spells, things like hold person, hold monster as when you’re successful with those spells, your party gets guaranteed crits on those enemies. Cleric can deal a lot of damage in the right group, having silvery barbs can force a fail save on a creature. Theres a lot to learn and do with an optimal built cleric but you know whats fun? Doing your own thing.

Actually, medium armor is almost always better. The -1 to AC is easily worth the 2 extra points in point buy, having a better bonus in the far more important dexterity saves, and a +2 in initiative compared to a -1
Also your con should hopefully be at 16 by the end of 1st level character creation, the hitpoints, and all important con saves, are too good to pass up

    • @tempname3308
      @tempname3308 2 года назад

@@damagereduction8006 So, you are mathematically incorrect.
(Also, I don’t think that you caught the point of the build being a Heavy Armor/Melee/Tank Cleric that literally only needs Wis to be 100% effective, therefore Shillelagh)
I will give one caveat: you are half-correct in that Shillelagh does the least cool stuff for full casters (or anyone without extra attack), BUT. In case you didn’t know. Clerics ARE in fact most often built for front-lining. And, in case you didn’t know. Nature Domain gets both Heavy Armor and Divine Strike (the coolest one, you can swap between damage types), not Potent Cantrips. Plus, the Druid Cantrip is free. Picking one that synergizes with built-in abilities (Divine Strike) is never going to be a bad idea.
Sure, it’s all well and good to run your math by always using the most spell slots possible per encounter in white-room settings for the purposes of goosing up damage/support totals, but the game at-table often relies on sustainability. Bless? Good option, great in fact. And, you know. Takes one action to cast. If you’re lucky, you can have it up right before initiative is called. Most fights last 3-7 rounds. At even 9th level, you’ve got 14 Spell slots TOTAL for the day. If you get into even 3-4 fights in a day, you’re out of spells in the last one, by those averages.
      Which means.
      By GOND.
I’mma be hittin a bish with this stick.
So, you know. Might as well have it be a one-handed magic D8 dmg that uses Wis, instead of a one-handed nonmagic D8 that uses Str. I was already boosting my Wis, my spells use that, and Dwarves don’t need Str for Heavy Armor, so pair that Magic Stick Cantrip with Plate and a Shield, this lil tank is fully ready to roll with only Con and Wis maxed out.
I find it generally helps to actually read a comment before critiquing it. Sure, you might have some point. But, if your point has literally nothing to do with what the other person is talking about, then the critique is basically just angry noise, in an empty room, where no one cares.
