- The Cretacolor Nero Pencils are dark and almost smudge-proof. They work great with watercolour with the downside being you have to sharpen them.

Another good thing about the nero pencils is that you can layer them on top of graphite, which i can't do with other carbon/charcoal pencils.

I have the original Koh-i-noor Negro Pencils, and I used 1, 3 & 5. After Cretacolor from Austria bought them out they changed the name slightly bu5 not the composition of the pencils, thankfully. I used 5 to sketch with, midtones with 3, then rarely used 1 as it was very hard to sharpen because it was so soft. Good pencils that stand the test of time. Need a vellum surfaced paper to really bring them out
Hey there, Koh-I-Noor are still making them at least in the form of the Gioconda 5.6 leads.
I think the name has changed to silky black, it's still sold with code 8815
Hello Teoh, I've been using these pencils for years and I really love them. Since I'm a left hander the fact that they smudge less is a big bonus for me. I use them for portrait drawing. I use mostly the number 3, I've found that you can even out the pencil strokes to some degree by passing over areas with the number 5 very hard pencil. I never thought about using them for Urban Sketching, so this is something new and exciting to try. Thank you much for all your wonderful reviews.
A great review - thank you. I sometimes use Pitt oil based pencils, which come in a sanguine colour (burnt sienna) as well as black. They give drawings an old masters look, which is kinda neat.

Cretacolor makes oil based pencils that come in sanguine, sepia light, sepia dark, white, and the nero. I like bothe the cretacolor and the faber castell.
I have some of the other Cretacolor oil based pencils. They are nicer to use compared to the drier version of the same pencils.

They come in a Hard 5 as well. Superior Reproduction for Commercial Art due to the lack of shine when photographing. Thanks for the very informative video. I will share.

Must get these pencils! I sketch a lot with graphite pencils, but I don't like the reflection. The Nero pencils are just what I need. Your London sketches are wonderful!

I also love the sanguine, sepia dark, and sepia light pencils they make. They also have 5.6mm leads available! I love using them in toned sketchbooks. I don't like the white pencil that much, I'd rather use a white polychromos or the derwent chinese white pastel pencil.
+QueenWaspGo I think they have the dry white pencils and the oil based white pencil.
I've tried both. They advertise one as charcoal white and the other as oil.
Graphite is nice for smooth blending but when I want something black I like charcoal better.

The eraser might be an issue like you said. I really haven't found an eraser that works better than the bright white pvc free erasers. That would be a cool review to do....find the best eraser for graphite and these Nero pencils. Also I have recently been using erasable ink pens!!!! It's a cool look because you can erase what you've watercolored over!!! I've discovered that a few months ago and been playing around with it. It's fun actually! I've been using the fusion erasable pens. Some colors work better than others but interestingly enough it can be used as a sort of masking. It's awesome and unique.
Erin S. The erasable ink is a really neat idea . Do you find that the fusion pens erase well after covering the lines with watercolour? Sometimes it's hard to erase pencil after it has been painted over.
Vicki Wood it is! You should really try it! I haven't seen anyone talk about it online when I google it or anywhere on RUclips either! But it's so cool I can't keep it to myself anymore!
I just started playing with cretacolor oil pencils and found it quite challenging, and this video was quite good!-so thank you for posting this! Perhaps it would have been great to share your insight on what type of paper these pencils are best suitable for? I realized my problem was the paper I was drawing on; for me these pencils are more enjoyable to work on a smoother surface.
These pencils work better on smoother paper.
I also noticed that by laying down the graphite first, the oil charcoal sits over it quite well. In my drawings I have found reason use that. The Cretacolor makes some really deep blacks, very nice. I also use the Mitsubishi pencils but only in 10B. Have you used any spray fixatives over the Cretacolor pencils?
I only spray fixative over the Cretacolor pencils when they are exposed. If I cover all the pencil marks with watercolour, there's no need to use fixative.
Nice review! I just bought used my first Cretacolor Nero before finding your video. I wanted something I could use with graphite for the darkest values where I definitely wanted to avoid the distraction of a burnished, shiny 9B graphite pencil. It worked very well for my purposes. I am planning on buying some of the other pencils in this series. Can anyone tell me if any of these contain both graphite and charcoal, like a hybrid pencil?
I don't know about these but a mix of graphite and charcoal that I found interesting is made in China, by Marie's. It's the 14b. But for me, nothing else is like coal. Then there will be really dark values and without the uncomfortable brightness of the graphite.
Or go straight to Conté Pierre Noire 3b.
Since they are oil-based, I wonder if they can be used for pre-sketching without their migrating to the surface like charcoal or graphite pencil can through an oil painting without sealing first.

I don't have any preference. Schmincke makes a lot of fixative.
I have used them for years now and I think they're great! But there is a fifth one actually: extra hard. Did you know that?

I really like the extrasoft for figure drawing, I just wish the cores weren't so flimsy. Unlike my normal charcoal pencils they seem to break way too often if I sharpen them to a long taper.
These oil-based ones are quite durable and don't break much. I wished they have mechanical pencil leads too. LOL.

You can get them in 5.6mm lead, I believe. Don't know if they make anything smaller.
Hi recently got a set of Cretacolor Leads, Box of 6 Assorted Colors.Assorted Colors, Box of 6 - This set contains six different leads and is therefore a great basic sketching lead assortment. Includes one each of While Pastel, Sanguine (oil), Black Compressed Charcoal (medium), Graphite 4B, Sepia Dark and Sepia Light.Trying to figure out if Cretacolor Sepia Dark and Sepia Light are graphite, oil or pastel. Any ideas?
????Would you know which ones are chalk pastels, graphites, dry pastel, oil based leads or charcoal? These are he leads themselves

They are suppose to work like that. You have to use a light touch.
I was wondering if the oil in the Nero pencils bleeds through to the back side of the paper?

The pencil may not bleed through but when Nero (emporer) was stabbed, I think he did bleed through.

These pencils are already quite affordable. Not sure why people will want to make fake pencils

I've no experience with them. From the description, they seem like Copic markers.

Oil is not watersoluble so I don't know if there are any products like that.
Of course, it's not water soluble, but still there are water mixable oil colours and charcoal. That's why I tought might be oil pencil as well (becouse maybe it's not too good to breath in the paint thinner during drawing)

Grab the Mitsubishi kh-20 long point sharpener. It has to be the best sharpener I have.
How does it sound on printing paper? Does it sound like it's scratching the paper and can be easily usable like how you use a graphite pencil?
I use an oil based charcoal pencil for warm up sketching in the bathroom. I use it on white tiles. It is easily removed with a damp cloth and saves paper and money. lol (I am bankrupt due to health expenses, so I must come up with ways to practice for free)
I forgot to say: it's a makeup pencil. :p

Dear viewers I learned a very important lesson today. My dumb ass spent about four hours doing an oil impregnated charcoal and watercolor rose for the love of my life and I totally fucked up. How did I totally fuck up you ask? I used masking fluid to block off the white like a watercolor artist normally would (I use pens for this and trust 1000% easier). Well folks oil impregnated charcoal and masking fluid do not mix. All that white is now a muddy mess and I cannot fix it. So my suggestion use ink when using masking fluid because these Nero pencils (I used nero leads in a holder) just do not work. Ah art you bork ten times and then you oh now I know how this works. Please excuse my language but really there was no other way to explain it. I get the maybe I should have Googled that award for the day now don't I? Anyway Teoh you rock like always and I found this video on Google searching Creatacolor Nero. Sigh back to the drawing board like Willie Coyote that I know I misspelled like a digaling.

Monolith is a horrible eraser. Try a Tombow Mono for a drastic change.
