Dilbert's Scott Adams on Politics, Philosophy, Hypnosis, and "Failing Towards Success"

- "You can defend an entirely different view of the world using the same data that's used to defend the standard model. So whenever I can do that, I'm so there," says Scott Adams. Adams is a man of many talents: Best-selling author behind books such as God's Debris and How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, serial entrepreneur and creator of the time-management system Calendar Tree, and, of course, the man behind Dilbert.
Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Adams in his home office to discuss Adams' obsession with Donald Trump ("I see in Trump a level of persuasion technique that is probably invisible to the public" - 1:18), his resistance to political labels ("As soon as I join a group, suddenly all those things that I thought were crazy, I start convincing myself..." - 2:19), his political philosophy ("My preferred political process would be something like business" - 3:08), what Dilbert can teach us about capitalism ("One of those ideas that's terribly flawed, but we haven't figured out anything better yet" - 5:22), and the theme that runs through all of his work ("In all cases, I'm interested in the same thing: Is there a different way to look at the familiar?" - 10:05).

Scott Adams has changed my life. I grew up in generational poverty and I was completely lost. I felt like a total loser, incapable of accomplishing anything. "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" turned me around. The simple epiphany that "goals are for losers, systems are for winners," was like a huge wrecking ball crashing through my former disfunctional paradigm. Now because I follow systems, I'm a freelance boom mic op; I'm writing and directing my first film; I'm hosting a podcast; I'm learning how to code; I'm meditating daily. I hope to meet this man in person one day so I can thank him.

Finding Scott Adams during this election has been a god send. I had no idea others thought and acted on thoughts in ways I had been. So many want to be "right" aka match their views.

I'm from Brazil and just finished watching the dilbert season 2 ( too bad it ended 😢) , always a big fan , I came here to see who he was , obviously he's got to be Uber intelligent , dilbert is by far the most clever cartoon I've ever read/ watch , this guy is a godsend 🙌🙌

Dilbert's life is only "bad" when compared to the lives of the pointy-headed boss, Dogbert, and Catbert. If you compare his life to the lives of the Elbonians, he's actually doing rather well. I always thought that was sort of the point.

The interviewer should get some sleep on the night before an interview. He looked like Scott was keeping him awake but just barely.
3:08: "My preferred political process would be something like business. Now what does business do all the time? They test things small, [things] that make sense -- at least the thing they're testing should work; it sounds good on paper, but they don't know, so they test it small. We could do that with states. The states could test just about anything. And then the federal government could say hey, look at the results, if it's not enough, test it somewhere else. So I'd like to see a world where things are tested. As soon as you leave that world, it's just blah blah. I can't find any way to agree with anything that isn't "Come up with an idea, test it, and measure it." If you're not doing that you're not doing anything I care about. I would love to see a candidate who says, "I don't have an opinion. I'm going to go with the majority on social issues," -- just because that keeps things calm -- "And if it's economics or world stuff and I can test it, I will."
Thing is, that's called "science", not "business"...

Clearly, Scott Adams is an Egoist individualist anarchist, or an Egoist for short. Pretty much Egoists don't hold any philosophical argument other than the pursuit of self interest, so there's no need to invent a new term. For more, I recommend to read Max Striner's The Ego and His Own, or Benjamin Tucker's edulcorated adaptation (and more emotional/idealistic) to the American culture in his periodical Liberty, mixing Stirner's Egoism with his former socialist individualist anarchist political views, or the compilation of selected articles published under the title "Instead of a Book", although the latter is less on Egoism since doesn't cover the articles published in Liberty during the last 15 years. It's worth to point out that Tucker considered himself a libertarian, so in some way any modern Egoist could consider himself to be a classic libertarian like Tucker.

The response that big decisions like "who you marry" being irrational doesn't satisfy me. I guess he's not a fan of Ayn Rand. He sounds skeptical of reality.
Interesting how you say it doesn't satisfy you. Apart from your dissatisfaction, do you find it to be factual? And who knows whether he's a fan of Ayn Rand. But it seems to me that one can be a fan of hers and not necessarily agree with her model?
I can say its factual because I'm sure what he's describing is very often the case (people making decisions on where to live or who to marry irrationally). When he said that I heard an implication that these types of decisions MUST be irrational and we can't apply reason when there are so many factors, as he says. I don't think we can say for sure that that must be. And I definitely don't think its good to assume that its true. We ought to try to apply reason to the big decisions and I don't think choosing a place to live or who to marry can't be decided rationally. I apply reason and as a consequence I am single.
No, I don't think one can be a fan and not agree with her model. They wouldn't be a fan. "Fan", in that case, would be too strong a term. You could be a fan and remain unconvinced on one or two details in her philosophy, I guess. But a fan would probably accept Objectivism. A fan would probably read all her books, maybe Peikoff and others. If someone just liked The Fountainhead or Atlas for its entertainment value but are unconvinced of the philosophy then that's nice but they're probably not a fan. People say "I'm a fan..." so much that it loses its meaning.

Any system should have a choice......with capitalism being the only choice,... then there obviously is no choice.......socialism is the option.....with socialistic communities the government would no longer need to spend money on welfare.....and better yet.. large amounts of money wouldn't be wasted on creating jobs.....because jobs would now be an option.....people would have a real choice!!!..work in a community that supports them..or work in a system that creates wealth for the 1%...states would not have to give welfare tax breaks to the rich....they would have to actually live on there business models......what a thought!!!

Levi Coffman I understand you think that way, because I used to think that way. Not sure about you but I was extremely good at maths, I would guess you aren't bad, because in the maths world, you take away 99.9% of the variables that occur in real life. So you are left with this very basic, logical world to solve problems. This maths world was made by mathematicians to try and find general patterns and rational answers for our super chaotic world. If you had to calculate using every variable nothing would ever get done.
So it's actually irrational to assume that life is black and white, or there is a simple solution for everything. There are solutions that create results, but there is no perfect solution for any problem in the world. All we humans can do is get as close as we can so a perfect solution.
So what this guy is saying is true, the biases in our mind pay attention to what it deems most important, because it's illogical think you can take every variable into account that exists out there when making a judgement on something, it would take too much time/ we would lose our minds.
