Pause around 0:40 you can compare the distance the players have from the goal post, and clearly Robinson is atleast 12-15 metres closer to the goal post. @tennisrulesok We're still going on about this? Howlett has to run a good 60m diagonally, Robinson has to cover about 30-40m, Howlett beats him easily. It's closer than the commentators make it out to be. But he still beats him. Robinson's faster over 10m, Howlett's faster on anything over that.

Sarah Schuster Barton I think most people would take Robinson because he offered a greater threat to create something out of nothing. The All Blacks have many great wingers and Howlett was a good player, but there are very many of his own country men who would get picked ahead of him
Just saying that refs now would probably blow that up straight away and deem it dangerous.. Do you not think refs are being to soft on the tackle at the moment?
I think "smoked" or "burned" is the wrong word, he was beaten rather easily but smoked is harsh. Robinson had a much larger distance to cover and started standing still. It is surprising he got as close as he did considering howlett is quicker over that sort of distance and that he was running with momentum before receiving the ball. Despite this Robinson put in a valiant effort but howlett still beat him.
@eddyd63 Thats not a very good argument. Players like McCaw were in the All Blacks team that, as per usual, disappointed at that world cup. McCaw, Howlett and others were the best players in their positions at the time. Just becuase they didnt happen to pick up a winners medal after the final doesnt make players such as Jason Robinson better. Also, who was the top try scorer in that world cup? Howlett? Yeah.
I've seen it. Howlett has to turn around. Watch him catch up at the end. Go on google, you can find all the player stats and what they're like over 100m.
@duncandohnut1993 Bullshit, just watch both players running on the wide screen angle. Robinson runs way faster than Holwett. He only scores cause Robinson has way more distance to cover as well.
Doug Howlett burns him up here because Jason Robinson was being weighed down by his heavy gold World cup winners medal and the dvd of his try in that game. Doug Howllett has nice hair though!
Robinson was destroyed in that little test of speed, the fact is doug howlett would smoke him because of the top end speed he has, robinson as you can clearly see had a sharp angle so made him look a lot faster, he was running the width of the feild not length like doug howlett was, robinson was put to the test, and he well lost.
@eddyd63 Aside from the japanese players, other top try scorers are/were world class obviously. I think its unfair to claim that Robsinson was a much more creative player. That would indicate that Howlett was just standing in the right place at the right time to finish off other players' hard work (Chris Ashton does this well of course), which is by the way a skill in its own right and something that made Howlett such a feared attacking option. Like any good wing he made tries for himself too.

@spartanchipmunk sorry about spelling, wireless keyboard, connection plays up a little if you type fast
@43aaronlewis mate just on the side of this comment there is a jason robinson tribute, please watch that
i bet jason robinson was like FUUUCK!
Blinding speed. Awe from Papua New Guinea!
No wonder Robinson couldn't catch him. He was weighed down with his world cup medal;)
howlett doesn't even look like hes sprinting..
Would definately NOT say Robinson got "Burned" as Robinson made more ground tracking accross field....
