    I find it so easy to go overboard with fall decor too! I really like the wood votives that you are donating, BUT, if you have something similar that you like more then you did the right thing.

    Hilary, you've done a FANTASTIC job of sorting through and paring down the seasonal decor! Good for you for letting go of the things that aren't things you'd buy again. I have been appreciating the things I do have so much more since clearing out some stuff. This is motivating!

    Thank you for uploading I really enjoyed the process and your interpretation along the way. The tip you give to look at the pile as if you're in a thrift store and pick out the items you would like to "buy again" is such a new and exiting concept I wanted to pause and try right away!

    Lol! I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but when you started the video, I thought you had yet to purge! Your shelves seem very full to me and I wouldn't like to do all of that dusting. But that's everyone's personal choice of how much stuff to have out. What I don't understand is the drawers. Apart from the seasonal items, if you love the jars, candle holders etc, then why not have them on display? If the answer is because you already have stuff out, then maybe you have too much stuff? Just an observation. Would your space seem more serene if there was- more space? I challenge you to try it for a week or two. Purposefully leave some space open and see how it makes you feel. Thanks for sharing your home :)

      jayathome I so agree. I think another problem is that with the konmarie method, supposed to follow a strict list of which categories to do first. she was supposed to start with clothes, then books, etc. If she would have done this, I bet she would have gotten rid of more. Why try a method if you're not going to give it 100% and do it right?

    I haven't read this book but I recently moved and I've been using some of the principles without knowing it. Unpacking everything has made it really clear what I just don't like anymore and how much I have. Getting rid of things has been so much easier that way.

    I love Marshmallow Fireside so much & decided to try to cut out the wax in the bottom of the candle holder and then put chunks of it in my Scentsy burner. Works like a charm! It was about a month ago, and I am still burning the scent in the burner :) Just something about it that I really love.

    So glad I found your channel. I feel like for people like us, home decor can be SO HARD to let go of. Laurie Yokoyama It's called the thrift store because they store stuff for me, and for a low low price I can go pick it back up when I need it again. And in the meantime I don't have to dust/organize/put up/find any of those things.

    love that you kept some things even though you have no particular purpose for it. What intimidates my about KonMari is this demand to get rid of everything that "does not spark joy". So instead of this all or nothing approach I'm starting in a very small way. My sock drawer looks awesome! Thanks for the inspiration :)

    • @faithrada
      @faithrada 6 лет назад

      4kassis ??? And yet the Kon-Mari method is not about ALL or Nothing. If you Truly like something... then keep it.
      It seems that many people confuse Minimalism with the Kon-mari method but they really are quite different mind sets.
      I got a kick out of ALL those pillows on your couch... where is there room to sit? I have one small pillow and that pillow brings me joy.... however ... if having all those pillows truly brings YOU joy ... then by all means KEEP them.
      What Sparks Joy for me... is SPACE! I love rocks and collect semi-precious stones but when I tried to display ALL of them at once it all just looked muddled and
      cluttered. Now I just put certain groupings out and change them up from time to time.
      I learned that sometimes Less is More. ; )

  • @thereaderbug398

    My family moves around A LOT and I think that's what keeps the amount of stuff we own in check. When I go through the house, I get rid of anything that isn't important enough to move and unpack in our new home. I do the same thing with Christmas décor every year. As the years go on, and we buy nicer things, I get rid of the older or not so nice Christmas things that I just don't care for anymore.

    I always love reading books on purging but over the years I've found that some of them just hype you into getting rid of things that later you regret. For example, they tell you to get rid of clothes that you haven't worn in a year, well this winter was so brutally cold here that I wore all the really heavy sweaters that I haven't worn in years. Had I got rid of them I would have been hard pressed to find such nice heavy wool sweaters. Glad you didn't get rid of the microphone, you're right about that. It's not something you see everyday, you can always get rid of it if you decide later it's not working for you.

    The two candles could be melted and combined into one jar and then used a few more time on an electric warmer ($3.99. at Hobby Lobby). You'd still be throwing them out eventually, but at least you'd get 3-4 more scent "pay-offs". Count me in if you ever decide to sell the vintage microphone. I know someone already asked, but thought it was worth a shot! Aw, you still have the little frames from the owl pictures. I need to send you a picture of what I made with the prints you sent me! Great video & tips...Diana.

    Thank you so much for sharing Hillary. I mentioned to my husband that I had been hearing about this book from you and other you-tubers and he surprised me and bought it for me! I just got it and have started reading it but I'm already getting inspired and feel my attitude changing. I've always known I was a hoarder but for years I have been trying the little-by-little method and always revert to mess and clutter. I definitely need to schedule a time to just get it done; and so I shall, shortly after I finish reading the book. I've also started doing some you-tubing myself so if i get my courage up I might even share some of my mess and hopefully the after results too. :-) Thanks again.

    I am intrigued by this method and am going to start with my clothes as suggested. Thank you for talking your way through the process. I think a lot of what was in there didn't belong there as it was seasonal and you said you had bins that those things should have been stored in. Just an observation and not criticism.I must remember the question does it bring joy? I am nearly ready to start but have a feeling of dread or fear--guess this truly is an emotional thing.

    You did a great job purging. I know it had to be difficult. I think one of the reasons we buy so many different things is because we do have different styles that we enjoy, but we have to be true to the style our home represents or the one we're trying to create. I love thrift shopping and my eye is drawn to so many beautiful items and it pains me to leave some things behind, but I know they would never fit anywhere in my home unless I created a whole other look.

    • @OldWorldHome
      @OldWorldHome  9 лет назад

    Wish I lived near your thrift store, love that milk glass. One thing I have a hard time with is that being military we move a lot. What works in one home might not work for another. So how do you decide what to keep and what to get rid of in those situations?

    • @OldWorldHome
      @OldWorldHome  9 лет назад

      I'm the Momster I find milk glass all over so hopefully you can find some for yourself :) In that situation I would hold onto only the pieces that I truly love and could not live without. Any extra decor you add to fit your particular home I'd try and find second hand at a thrift store or yard sale so if the time came that you moved again and had no where to put it you'd be okay with letting it go since you didn't spend a lot on it to begin with. That's what I'd do :)

    Amen - I am the same way - you can't think about the lost money - but you USED it at some point so you aren't losing any money. Oooh holidays are my downfall. I started to purge - yiiiikes! :D I "generalize" - Fall/Thanksgiving are pumpkins, leaves, apples - that can stay out and be used for the entire season - I do a generic red tablecloth to run from Christmas through Valentine's Day. My theory is if you have gotten rid of alot of stuff - the frames, that COOOOOL old microphone - are the reward for the hard work you have done. I try to have one bin per holiday as the max - except Christmas - I can't help myself I purchased an oversized platter that I place the small candles on instead of votives. From what you showed above, as you have moved, did you discard more items from the keep at that time? :)

    The green light thing you could just spray paint white. I think that could make it so you would want to put it out i think it doesn't go with your style.

      SarahSunshine2008 I agree Sarah..as I watched I thought if it was white, she'd maybe use it more.

      Thank you for that suggestion, I actually considered it myself but I did like the green so I'd rather pass it on to someone who will enjoy it as is :)

    I noticed that your draws don't pull out smoothly you could take them all the way out and rub colorless paraffin wax on the drawers and tracks. It will not get sticky and I found it works well and for myself I'm a big believer in the paint tape reminder, after I clean and reorganize my drawers I put a little piece of blue tape on each item and a 3x5 card with the date I last organized. If I use the item during the next year I take the tape off and in twelve months the items that still have the blue tape on it goes. It's like the clothes rule after purging closet the items that remain are hung up back wards, another 3x5 card with the date of last purge and any clothes that haven't been worn you can see the hangers are still backwards you know what clothes need to go. Sorry for the unsolicited information I couldn't help my self, you have a lovely home.

    This is the first video of yours I've ever seen. That green 60s candle holder thing you showed towards the end didn't seem to fit your style from the bit I could see in this video. You may have liked it more if you had spray painted it gold or white. This was interesting thank you.

    Sajnos, nagyon gyengén sikerült. A mögötted lévő polcon is túl sok a dekor, az egész lakás nagyon lelakott. De örülök, hogy legalább próbálkozol. Egyetértek azzal, aki azt mondja, hogy sokkal ütősebb lett volna, ha a válogatás folyamatát is bemutatod. A fiókokba visszatett tárgyak között is nagyon sok a gagyi, nincs például semmi rendszered arra, hogy a különböző ünnepekre külön válogasd a dekorációt, vagy legalább fajtánként tárold, pl. vázák együtt, gyertyák együtt, vagy akár színek szerinti csoportosításban.

    Read Kon Mari along with you, inspired ever since! Her method works! will continue process. Finally able to deal with, "The Stuff," without the quilt! if it doesn't Spark Joy, out it goes,! it's not just purging clutter it's liberating you, by realization of the questions that go along with: Why we keep, The Stuff , in the first place. Those, boxes, cartons, totes, and trash bags , they make us feel stuck, weighted down, especially if another gave it to us, made it for us,they or we purchased. served it's purpose,thankful, for that expression, send it on it's way to it's evolution! Got easier, new individual mindset ! something comes in, something goes! lol, No longer creating : [The MOUND! ] Kon Mari doesn't have repeat clients, learned :the life-changing magic of tidying up! Curious, if you kept the log candle holders, caring person, that you are, felt malaise on screen, thinking it through for decision, when you held it, did it spark joy?

    I don't want to talk to my socks or my belongings, cause then I will think of them as having feelings and I will feel even more guilty about getting rid of them. LOL Does Marie tell you how to get rid of a religious relic that your mom gave you, and expected you to respect, before she died? I do NOT know what to do with this thing!
