Commiting to the Psalter ( everyday ) fundamentally changed my faith. I no longer the read Psalter: It began to read me. As a Catholic convert, I would highly recommend the Douy-Rheims version of the Bible which is translated from the Septuagint faithfully.
@Anglican Sounds they didn't have Masoretic texts back then you Anglican dummy and there's nothing wrong with learning the Old Hebrew to compare translations. It was the revisions the Jews made against Christianity that make it terrible to use

It's difficult to listen to this on headphones, because Fr. Reardon can only be heard on the left channel while Fr. Trenham is heard from both the left & right just fine. Something you may want to watch out for in future videos.
I am thrilled to see this, and am going to rewatch in tomorrow night with my husband,. We do bible study every night together and right now we are working through the Psalms,4 or 5 every night, then watch a talk or sermon. I have been trying to explain to him how people, especially religious, use the Psalms for prayer and chant them or pray them during masses during the day, but it is better to have him hear a priest explain it. The scriptures in early churches were written by hand, of course so they were very valuable. When printed it was possible to include all the writings translated from the Hebrew that are collectively called the Old Testament . These were available for those who liked to dispute about texts and led to various sects being set up, I suppose. The Psalms were just one of the books to them and not so important it would seem. I’m in a place weighing Catholicism versus orthodoxy, and I love praying in Latin, and something I was concerned about in orthodoxy is that I might be banned from doing that. It seems that the father was praying the psalms in Latin though?
The pre-schism Church had both Latin and Greek speakers who were both praying and singing the Psalter and singing according to the Septuagint. The Vulgate Latin is a faithful rendition of the Septuagint and is beautiful poetry and part of Holy Tradition. Holy Tradition is Holy Orthodoxy, there is no ban on Latin. Orthodoxy doesn't work through banning things, it works through compunction (of our own unworthyness) and desire to turn to God in love.
@@gillianc6514 Wrong. The 405 AD Vulgate Bible is same-same as the Masoretic Text. Jerome translated from it prior to the being "Masoreted," (that is, the Hebrew text having the vowel system added to it.) In the book named The City Of God by Augustine there's a very good description to it's immediate rejection by the people who were shocked and hated it. Don't beleeve me: go compare the Masoretic Text, (say, of a KJV) to the Douay-Rheims Bible, the English trans. of the Vulgate.

The only thing with which I disagree with the great Fr. Patrick is the translation recommended. The Boston psalter is pretty ugly in its English; I’ve found the best English LXX translation is the psalter in the old Catholic Douay-Rheims, which is actually the parent of the HTM Boston psalter.
Jews didn't change the Tanahk and remove or change verses that pointed to Jesus as Messiah? There aren't over 1000 significant differences between the Septuagint and Masoretic text? I'm neither an Evangelical nor Orthodox, but a pretty good country historian. Where did the original text from which the Septuagint was translated go? Gee, who had total control over those texts. As early as Origin it was recognized the Jews were already altering the text. The Orthodox Church had better keep an eye on all these Evangelical preachers coming over to the Orthodox Church and getting ordained because they like the antiquity and aesthetics. These guys were raised on Dispensationalism and Christian Zionism with their mother's milk. They may not even be aware of this but they will filter everything through those eyes unless seriously "deprogrammed."
This was the same problem Blessed Augustine had; he had a lot of heretical and pagan baggage. I remember years ago when I was at church after vespers, I brought some books I had on missiology that I liked. I showed them to one of the readers (a Ukrainian born man who was raised Orthodox), he briefly examined the books and asked, “How long has the author been Orthodox?”, I told him, “Ten Years”, and he then dismissed the books. At the time I was slightly offended, but looking back I realize that he had a point. Not to say converts shouldn’t become priests, just that they should take more time to let go of heretical baggage and absorb the truth of Orthodoxy before they begin writing and teaching in such volumes. Perhaps more time in monasteries rather than seminaries will help. Seminaries have such a tendency to get one in their head, whereas monasteries are places that bring us into our hearts. There are a myriad of great Orthodox teachers out there. Many of whom are saints and have fallen asleep in the Lord. We should pay heed to them. No offense to these Pastors.
