I just finished this book and I have to say your videos helped expound on a lot of the ideas Russell explains in his book. I watched one after each chapter to better understand. I have to say your closing video is just as powerful as Russell's closing chapter. Thanks for your time and thoughts.
Thank you so much for the series! Tomorrow I have an exam on Epistemology, mainly dealing with this book and these videos were an amazing help to comprehend it all. You're a real hero! Peace, love and positivity from Belgium!
@@tidepaste Pretty cool. I’m a little surprised a Catholic University would include Russell, but he is a good example of contemporary epistemology. I am glad you did well on the exam. Take care.
THE LAST SENTENCE OF THE BOOK: "But above all, because through the greatness of the universe which philosophy contemplates, the mind also is rendered great and becomes capable of that union with the universe which constitutes its highest good." Obviously, Russell wasn't aware in 1912 of the things to come (via Einstein) in Cosmology.
Just started taking philosophy which I think is interesting. Couldn't understand much. Your video has helped me to better understand the concepts. Thank you very much
Learned a lot from philosophy, although came to the conclusion its sufficient to study critical thinking, reasoning and logic without necessity to read any philosopher
I had this chapter for the discussion exam in our college. Going through that text is kinda hard (I don't understand much English). Your Video helped me alot. Thanks!!🫶🏻
hi there! thankyou soo much :) I have a upcoming short discussion about Uncle Russel's Value of Philosophy and your video helped alot. Im a 18 year old second year college student in the medical sciences and our teacher is pretty into Uncle Russel's Philosophy so thankyou. just wanted you good sir to know :)
Russell says that philosphy is of no utility to the practical man because it will not help him in doing the practical things more efficiently. On the other hand the philosophical man questions instictive beliefs and is able to conceive the world in a wide variety of ways and is able to empathise with different mindsets. This is a good skill that can improve someone's efficiency in practical matters no ? So philosophy can help the practical man if it allows him to think wider. For example in a work environment one can better manage a team if one can empathise with every member and understand their ways of thinking. More efficiency gained by the help of philosophy. Can this be true ?
I don’t see why not. It should be noted that once Russell starts speculating on whether philosophy is useful to the practical man, Russell is engaging in-at best-armchair Psychology. Russell was an expert in Philosophy and Mathematics-not Psychology. Russell might reply that the practical man who engages in thinking about what others believe is no longer merely practical. I think Russell’s point here is that the *merely* practical man does not engage in philosophy. The one who is interested in practical as well as theoretical questions is not merely practical anymore.
Well, in case of my videos, preceding events have dictated my video production for the next few weeks-maybe months. I am teaching a logic course and I am redoing the videos. However, one should not think this necessitates Determinism.
@@haugenmetaphilosophy What's your position on the free will debate? Compatiblist or incompatilist? Sorry if this seems inappropriate to ask since you're a logic channel and someone who's running a course. I'm just really interested to hear your thoughts on this subject.
Well, I’ll tell you what I tell my students: it doesn’t matter what I think. To tell you what I believe defeats my purpose. My purpose is your education. Telling you what I believe interferes with that. I won‘t tell what I believe, but I will tell you the price of your beliefs-at least through the videos. In the case of free will, I am afraid you will just have to wait until I can get around to it. I apologize if that is disappointing.
I do. Other philosophy professors do as well. Some professors do not. I know them, but I do not know you. I am trying to determine the justification for your claim. It is odd to me that you prefer Kant over Berkeley yet you malign Russell especially since he is essentially taking Kant’s approach. I thought by understanding where and what you teach I might understand your position. Given what you have said and that you do not teach anywhere, I think I understand now.
Going through this book without your videos is like walking down the road with no lights, I thank you for your hard work in making this series.
I appreciate the compliment and I am glad the videos were helpful. Thanks for watching and spread the word.
That ending really hit. Thank you so much for this adventure! ❤

@@haugenmetaphilosophy The Catholic University of Leuven. Oh and by the way the exam went pretty well, thanks again!

Philosophies aim is wisdom not knowledge
Okay, on the assumption that is true, can you be wise if you do not know the nature of knowledge?
No one studies Russell. Doing undergrads a disservice. Time better spent elsewhere.
Where do you teach?
@@haugenmetaphilosophy Indoors - unfortunately. But nowhere long, I'm afraid, if I pull out BR in 2018.
So, you do not teach anywhere.
