I had the privilege of knowing Son Tay raider MAJ Dan Turner. He used to volunteer his time and tell his story of the Son Tay raid to every Army OCS class until his death in 2015. I think I sat through every one of his briefs while I worked at OCS. We are losing a lot of history from the Vietnam conflict. I appreciate the efforts this podcast makes in capturing this important oral history.

Thank you Terry Buckler for your service, sacrifice and courage to answer the call to serve our country 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Thank you Jocko and EC for sharing this story.
Much appreciation to Terry for sharing his experiences and his life's lessons, despite his challenges and loss. Thank you, sir, for your service and for your dedication to continuing the mission. My condolences as well on your wife's passing.
What a great story. These Vietnam SF stories are awesome to listen to. That war was so “raw”, and unforgiving, the stories are always awesome from start to finish. I’ll be picking this book up asap….. My eternal gratitude for this man’s service, and condolences for his wife’s passing.

Thanks for having Mr. Buckler on, Jocko! I have heard about this op since I was a young boy as family friend, Pat St. Clair, was one of the raiders, and one of the four w/o combat experience. I didn't see him much as a kid as he was busy doing Army stuff, but occasionally I would see him at his father-in-law's Memorial Day cookout. This is where he told me when I was 14, I didn't need a big fancy gym to get strong. He said as a boy, growing up in the Roanoke, VA area in the country, he took a five gallon bucket, filled it with cement, tied a rope to the bucket, then threw the other end of the rope over a large tree branch with a pulley at the top, and that's what he used to get strong. I never forgot that and that was 23 years ago. God bless these guys!
What a great story and testimony I cannot imagine how they must’ve felt leaving Hanoi and coming back empty-handed at the same time coming back with their soldier ears. One hand being very thankful and the other hand feeling empty because they could not rescue their fellow comrades. Awesome story thank you very much
Great pod cast ! Loved it and would love to see Dick Thompson and John Stryker Meyer on together. Nothing but legends on these podcasts, everyone of them. Keep it up jocko ! Your the man
I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Terry Buckler a couple weeks ago at S.O.A.R. 2023. Genuinely nice guy as you can see here in this podcast.
As Terry was talking about the raid I remember all the lessons from Admiral McRaven's book from his post graduate days. Then, I hear you mention it, Jocko. That was a fascinating read. I read it, I don't know, probably 10 years ago now. I used it as a source for a World War 2 class in college, referencing the Eben-Emael raid.
This is one of my top 5 episodes. Brooklyn NY loves JKOPOD outstanding episode as anticipated Sir's My Science Teacher Mr. Stewart Wahl was a green beret in Vietnam 🇻🇳 in the 80's he showed my 9th grade class slides of one mission he was on (one slide showed The enemy changing their position, the next slide was multiple explosions (claymore) and ALLOT of killed enemy combatants. Mr. Wahl was in PHENOMENAL shape back then as a our science teacher. He played a huge part in myself and allot of other students to join the military
I had the pleasure of working at Salinas, California Police Department for several years with one of the Son Tay Raiders, Major Glen Rouse. Now have the gross displeasure of informing you that my friend, and your fighting buddy, Glen Rouse passed away within the last month or so. He was not only a highly decorated Soldier, but he was also a highly decorated and respected police officer. He is missed by his fellow officers. If anyone would like me to try to find and forward his obituary, please let me know.
My father flew in that mission with the 7th SOS Black Talons. Received the Silver Star. Vietnam changed him and most of the US soldiers that fought in that war. My gratitude, Honor, and Respect to every one of them for their sacrifices. Thank you for sharing your story Terry.
Huge respect, great story and thank you for bringing it to light! Side note, I also went to work for EDS after my enlistment until starting my LE career…🇺🇸⚫️🔵⚫️
Takhli,Thailand. Home of 3 F-105 squadrons during the War. These guys were the tip of the spear and had airplane losses of more than 100%. And, many POW’s.
I love hearing anything that has to do with Dick Meadows. Fantastic work, thank you gentlemen for letting us be flies on the wall during this amazing story telling
Fun fact, the Israelis Seryet Matkal Counter Terrorism unit looked to the US Son Tay raid as a operational template for their rescue plan in The Entebbe Uganda raid in 1976. The IDF pilots and commandos studied how the Son Tay raiders flew into North Vietnam and avoided NVA radar and Anti aircraft detection systems. They also emulated the landing on the X of the target and using surprise and speed to gain the advantage. Even the gear the Son Tay raiders used was heavily looked at by the Israelis, the raiders were using (at time) state of the art night optics, red dot sights and illuminators to enhance night time shooting accuracy. The Son Tay raiders were credited with eliminating an estimated 200 Chinese special forces advisors along with a mix of NVA soldiers while the raiders not taking a signal KIA. Operation Thunderbolt by the IDF is regarded as one the most text book hostage rescue missions in history, and it was the Son Tay raid that they looked at to pull it off
Ohhhh, I like this guys voice.. Super easy on the ears. Sounds Like he Mighta had broke nose once or twice but still, old man smoove.. Good guest with good stories
Regarding the wine tasting bit towards the end, what probably happened is that the Vietnamese had a bunch of wine left over from when the French used to occupy it. So when they booted the French out, they had a lot of wine left over. Since most Vietnamese didn't have a taste for the stuff and never used it in their own cooking, they put it into storage. Fast-forward to the next war, and they have all these American POWs that have nothing to do. So they break out the wine.
Correction @30:48 The first thing the Air Force builds on an air base is the golf course. That way they know how much room is left for where to put the runway then everything else.
This story was fascinating. I once owned a war game about the Son Tay raid. The plan began with intentionally crashing a helicopter into the compound. Turn #3 came down to the roll of the dice. 3 or better? Assets. We never hit the dice roll. Ever. Eventually, we just stopped playing.
I served with a man who was on the raid. He didn't tell me about it. He was a Master Sergeant alcoholic (PTSD) with a silver star. 1980 Ft. Richardson AK.
Jocko could easily make a killing reading for audible books . Would be so freakin awesome if Jack Carr picked him up to read his books . Completely has my attention every time he reads from books on his podcast. He voice just commands that you listen . I think it’s part of the reason this podcast is so good . Just part of what makes the man great
1:37:40, i watch a marine on a homesteading channel who posted a few weeks ago. um, dang can't recall what he was specifically talking about, I think fences? Anyway..."two is one, one is none." Starting a course in electrical engineering mid 90's we got a good science practice guide with a quote on the first page, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail". Was inspired by a 13 year old cypher punk who started an NFT interviewed on Mr Pompliano podcast a few hours ago. Curiously i spent a proportion of the day studying up on Cicada.
Did this man make Jocko blush around the 4:59 mark? Told him he was doing better than Trump with his following. Ol Jocko getting giddy from something the salty old man said! Atta boy.
I was driving a duce-n-half full of chutes back to base when going by the entrance road of the demo range. The truck shuttered with a loud explosion, so I stopped it, got out to check the rear tires. OFF in the distance at the demo range was a mushroom-shaped cloud, Tires were all ok, so I got back in the truck and thought dam that was a loud explosion, it wasn't till later that I saw Army Redcross 3/4 ton ambulance heading out to the range area, then another? It wasn't till I pulled into the 7th SF/GP Motor Pool that the Warrant Officer in charge said that there was an accident out at the demo range. All the ambulances were sent out there, plus a UH-1B to get any survivors to Womack Army Hospital. It was a Very BAD day.
Eric L. Haney former Delta Force operator wrote in his book of the unit planning a POW recovery raid deep into Vietnam to recover POW’s left behind in the war. The year was 1979. Some forces behind the scenes in the government upon learning of the mission decided to leak the information to the press, the POWs would be executed and evidence of their existence destroyed, and the mission would then be canceled.
