Drove my 05 E55 for 5 years. Absolute sleeper sedan, devastated so many folks that didn't understand the AMG badge. I felt like the shape of the car was ageless, only the headlamps showed their age.

This is the right type of car for when you're cruising around and you see some E60 530i guy with aftermarket "M" badge looking you in the eyes as he's trying to flex on you.
You've got my BIG BROTHER! I've got a W209 2005 CLK 55 AMG with the AMG Avantgarde Sport Pkg. and love it lol The M112/M113/M113k family of engines will go down in history as one of the best engines MB and AMG ever touched.
"Flooring it becomes such an addiction, and you hear this wonderful noise"...Yes that noise is sirens!! That's me in literally every sports car I've ever had. It got to the point where I said no more because I was born with a lead foot. I simply MUST drive insanely fast in a car that was meant to drive fast. Otherwise just give me a boring floating mattress.
For those who didn’t know the w211 chassis is almost the exact same as chargers of the same era as well as the trans. Shift kits for hemi transmissions paired with this car make it a monster cuz the transition is so sloppy out the box
Interesting I think the e55 amg may just be my next car and right now driving a 2005 dodge magnum rt ( hatchback charger they made for 3 years) so funny to think that they basically share some parts
That makes me rethink so many things! The SLK was shared with the Chrysler Crossfire, the E-class eventually used the successful chassis that originally the 300C/Charger's "failed" chassis design was supposed to be before MB scrapped it and gave it to Chrysler, the S-Class was shared with Maybach. Any others?
The E55 was a nice car in its time. I had the opportunity to own a 2006 E55 for about a year a few years ago. I love the body style and the interior was nice too. Even though the car is powerful (mine was stock) the 5 speed transmission and its slow shifting really dated the car. Also the electronic brakes provided no pedal feed back at all. I really liked the bodystyle so much that I found a nice 2008 E63 with the performance package as a replacement for the E55. I was very impressed with it after the first drive. The engine is powerful, the power is not as immediate as on the E55 but it is there just a little higher in the rev range. The 7 speed transmission is much better than the 5 speed in every way. The brakes are powerful and have a great feel to them. The visual changes they made to the car (bumper, side skirts, mirrors, steering wheel, gauge cluster and shifter knob) make the car more modern feeling. Anyone looking at the E55 should take a E63 out for a drive also. And I know about the headbolt issue but not all of them are affected by that. As with any aging German car (AMG or M car) you need to have money in your budget for repairs and maintenance as these cars are not cheap to keep on the road.
I had a choice between a triple black, 2-owner, dealer maintained 2005 E55 and a 2008 E63 with equally impressive records. After some research and thanks to Tavarish, Alex at LegitStreetCars and AMG Meister, I ended up choosing the E55 after learning about the potential head bolt issues on the early M156 engines and premature failures of the 722.9 7-speed. I have had it almost 2 years and I have not regretted the choice and have done all the maintenance and services that you would expect after 100k miles including motor and trans mounts, conductor plate, giubos and front torque arms and have upgraded the cooling system and added a slightly smaller VRP pulley along with a mild tune (530hp) and I couldn’t be happier with the reliability of the older platform. It is my daily and I bought this car to eat up highway miles in comfort and it does that job very well but my favorite thing is the "WTF?" look I get when an old fart in a nearly 2 decade old (mostly) stock Mercedes runs off and leaves their new 5.0 or SS Camaro. I don’t plan on ever selling it and I’m actually looking for an SL55 or CL55 to add as a stablemate.

I have an 06 E55 AMG wagon, and while I agree with a lot of what the host says, there were some upgrades in later years of the E55. Specifically, the steering in the later years is much quicker ratio. I don't have any complaints about it, and my other car is an 07 Cayman. The SBC braking system also apparently wen through some calibration changes, because I honestly really like the brakes on my car. I am running Akebono pads, which are a touch less grabby than the stock pads, and that improved the overall feel of the system. I generally really prefer more aggressive pads, but the Akebonos really feel like a perfect match on this car. The stock suspension is not the greatest, but it isn't awful either. I do wish replacement options were more plentiful for the wagon though. Honestly the biggest let down about the car is the transmission. Mine has developed some weird tendencies lately, refusing to freewheel on coast, and giving a strange slip, then grab feeling on acceleration in lower gears, but it was always a bit sluggish. I've become somewhat obsessed with the idea of swapping it out for a more modern transmission like a ZF 8HP. :) I think that would take the car to truly great if you could properly integrate it.

we just got a 2005 w211 m113k e55 amg and HOLY SHIT DOES IT HAUL. Stock is 469 hp but we plan to put on weistec supercharger, bigger pulley, bigger throttle bodies, bigger injectors, new headers, and new digital tune - expected hp ~ 750
Best 7 things you can do with this car are 1: fit a larger inter cooler for the supercharger, 2: Split the cooling system, 3: Upgrade the intercooler pump, 4: Fit a 77mm clutched pulley, 5: Fit 550cc injectors, 6: Get a tune (Eurocharged, VRP, German Muscle etc etc), 7: 1 step colder plugs. That will give you the best price to performance ratio - assuming you do the work yourself you'd be into it for about $2,000 to $2,500. I went a little further with short headers and a 92mm throttle body but really the cost of those and having them fitted was not worth the gain. Oh and get the supercharger serviced as well. Great fucking car.

I don't know if it makes sense, but the E55 AMG (which I recently bought, so now these videos are getting pushed left right and center to me) Is the most classicly modern looking car for mercedes.
@@camokiller56 LOL You better learn your own car then because the two systems are completely different. The fact that Mercedes trade marked two different names tells you that they are different. Active Body Control is hydraulic suspension. The car uses struts which are filled with hydraulic fluid pumped into them by a hydraulic pump and a computer which determines how much fluid to pump into them as you drive, hence "active suspension". Airmatic on the other hand, uses air springs which are obviously filled with air. They can raise and lower the vehicle to maintain a certain height level but suspension is not active, it is much simpler than ABC and completely different.
Yung Marco Not even close to the same thing. ABC has horrendous reliability and requires lots of maintenance and expensive and for the most part unavoidable repairs. I’m in several MB groups and quite a few people end up selling their cars because of ABC.
An E55 just sounds right, if it s really warm (like 50km on Autobahn with 160km/h plus and hard accelerations up to that speed) than it is really loud bangy and powerfull
Mr Sanchez805 And an upgraded coolant pump like the Bosch 010 or ideally the CWA100. These cars heatsoak BADLY even while stock. If I could do it over again I would’ve upgraded cooling long before pulley/tune/long tubes.
I really want to get a 211 E55 but my facelift 07 E550 Non Amg is already fast af on the streets already and amazed on how serene this car is and I compare the build quality compared to my uncle 211 05 E320 night and day difference on the facelift and early years. The non AMG V8 of the W211 series are the bang for the buck V8 sedans gotta love massive deprecation.
You are blessed with the chance to try and review this iconic piece of history and in the first 4 minutes of video there is no, and I mean zero, engine noise?? Then you proceed with revving it with no engine load and go on blabbering about the car. For what concerns me, you deserve to drive a soul-less 3 cylinder diesel modern care. Otherwise, Nice video quality and Peace man 👌
I'm sorry the exhaust clips weren't to your liking. The car has a rev limiter and the go pro exhaust footage didn't do a very good job either... bro, i also own a E55 amg with 2 of the rear cats deleted and it sounds good, but i really liked the way you car poped on the shifts and can you reply what has been done so that it sounds that way?
I agree with you on most things but I don’t think the W211 is that well built unlike say the W124 which is like driving a bank vault around, I have the updated 08 W211, you should buy the updated steering wheel off a E350 Sports model that has the paddle shifts as a standard updated wheel won’t take the paddle shifts also they are black not silver on the updated cars but you can buy the silver paddle shifts and add them so it looks exactly like the E55 or E63 update wheel. Greetings from Australia, enjoy. Btw, SBC is now warranted by Mercedes in the states for 25 years due to all the problems with it and a class action, so any issues with SBC call Benz.
The worst part about the w211 is when the air suspension fails😂 I have a black E500 with brabus wheels and kit, she’s just so sexy I think it looks better than my silver C63 w204
Very nice car. Daimler is looking to squeeze every bit of money from the AMG badging, slapping it on every category of car that it makes. I see DB running the risk of diluting AMG, making it not so special in the long run.
My dad has a E280 CDI (W211) and it has never let us down once I truly believe the W211 to be one of the best Mercs ever produced. PS I think you should wrap all the wood trim in carbon!
777jones I’ve seen someone replace it with an slk63 amg black series steering wheel I’m assuming of the following years. Bigger paddles and better shape if I remember correctly. Idk how hard they are to find or if there’s other alternatives but when I pick my 2004 e55 AMG up soon, I’ll look more into it!
I thought I read in one of your comments you had a W220. Was that a S55 AMG? I'm struggling between 2006 E55 AMG and 06 S55 AMG I really love thE classic look of the head lights on the E5 and by reading it looks like the E55 has a little more front leg room on paper anyways. How is the front comfort in the E55 vs the S55?
The thing is first CLS modals has the same engine as E55 witch get change in E63 (W219 CLS-Class was based in W211 E-Class) Personally if i would have E55 for five years i'll flip it for the W219 CLS63 or CLS55 🙌 etcher way both sharply gougers
hmm tough to say. It really depends on the colour of the CLS. You can add exterior mods to any CLS 55, but I think a black car makes it blend together the best. Adding something like a carbon fiber diffuser and a slight carbon fiber lip makes it sharper. Maybe some different wheels, front grill, exhaust tips etc. Truthfully, the CLS looks amazing in its stock form.
Prefer the looks of the W211 over the CLS. The CLS may have some cool features like its coupe esque window styles but the E-Class just feels more pleasing to my eyes. Btw I just subscribed. Hardly could I find reviews of the E55 nowadays 😉.
Rhanier Santiago I own both an E55 and E550 and agree with your statement. The M273 in the E550 makes PLENTY of power for the buck you can get one for. Not having SBC or the auxiliary/secondary battery is nice too. Part of me feels like selling the E55 and getting a W211 E63..
the only downside is that all AMG cars are automatics. Also the more modern RS's from Audi. Any try sportscar should be a manual. I'll stick with my true love, early M cars from BMW.
Wait, is the E55 tuned lower than the S55? I thought all M113ks were roughly the same (with power variance due to being hand-built) but the official numbers for my S55 AMG are 495hp/505tq.
I want to buy the W211 E200 Kompressor. I don't care about the performance .. I care about the beauty and low taxes. Is way way better and most beautiful than W212.
My only negatives were hard-steering, SBC unit, being too heavy. no spare tire. To compensate for bouncy handling shift into sport-mode which will harden the ride and you'll get a better feel. I loved my 2003 E55 and sorry that I sold it. My most perfect car was a 1990 Infiniti Q45, 278hp but at 140mph it felt like 55mph, from 91 it went downhill..

we just got a 2005 w211 m113k e55 amg and HOLY SHIT DOES IT HAUL.
How much power did you make after that?
@@jordynjackson1664 I don;t know, it has never been on a dyno but you have to think that with all those mods it's 100 or so over stock. Certainly feels way quicker.
The brakes might not feel the best but the stopping power is insane, will make your face feel like its collapsing in on itself when you slam on them.
Yup, I love the brakes. If you've driven the for any decent time, for what it is, it's amazing. The combination of what it offers is very nice.
Man, give me that car. I have the same exact w211 body style but just E500. I love this fricking car I can't imagine having that AMG version especially with the black interior I have the light gray. Car rides like a dream, mine is also 2003. They look better than the new bubble shape car. Timeless beauty
E500 is an excellent ride, glad to hear you're loving it!
A real torque monster and sleeper
thanks for the review mate
Where did you get that big trunk carbon spoiler from looks amazing 👍🏻
The car is amazing bro.
I totally forgot about how cool these are,I saw one yesterday and reminded me! Love to have one.I’ve had a couple Mercs and beemers I’m looking for the E55 now, I live close to a retirement community hopefully can find one some cool old guy took great care of and didn’t beat. If you don’t mind what did you pay? What’s the price for a good one?
FYI there was a recall on that sun roof. They fly off on the freeway. Just was annoyed I’m late 2019
An excellent sleeper car
I don't know if it makes sense, but the E55 AMG (which I recently bought, so now these videos are getting pushed left right and center to me) Is the most classicly modern looking car for mercedes.
Great Review! 😎😎💪💪
Beautiful looking car
Dude you gotta ditch those mufflers and straight pipe it. I miss mine ;((
yeah, she's a little quiet in stock form.
West Van Garage Great videos! Keep it up man! I’ll always watch w211 videos hahah
@Yul Strokheet Al-Wauch Straight piping ANY car is cool for the first 2 weeks and then you and the people around just get annoyed.
@Yul Strokheet Al-Wauch why ...
these engines with the abc suspension are the best vehicles ever
The E55 doesn't have ABC suspension, it has Airmatic.
Active body control and airmatic same thing. I own an s55
Preach boys preach
I really want 1 !!
Great Video
An E55 just sounds right, if it s really warm (like 50km on Autobahn with 160km/h plus and hard accelerations up to that speed) than it is really loud bangy and powerfull
u still got this car.. i want it
really enjoyed your video man. you're a good presenter
Thanks Ryan, really appreciate it!
I have an e55 stock and 2 weeks ago did a couple pulls against a m5 v10 manuel cars are pretty close but e55 is littebit faster bot not much
So much bang for the buck!
I have an S55 same engine just a lot more options, great cars and great engines haha,
Cool review bro💯🤟🏽
Add a pulley and a tune(;
Very true. You can beat a Lamborghini Gallardo from 0-60, and pay a fraction of the cost!
Thank You Will Smith this car beautiful
Lol trying to keep that straight face when you floor it
2011 CL 63! Next
If you want to see other V8 exhaust goodness, take a look at our P31 C63 AMG Review and exhaust videos, Jeep Trackhawk, Ford GT rev battle, and also Porsche vs C63 Rev battle. Thanks for watching.
If I get one of these should I straight pipe it I’m just curious
Great video, also in the market for one but a lot have too much miles(120k+)where I’m at and they cost the same as one would cost with 80k miles elsewhere smh but I’ll will keep looking
beautiful car just need to keep it maintained oil atf sensors vac etc...
Do you still have this car? How reliable was it and was it somewhat affordable to fix?
bro, i also own a E55 amg with 2 of the rear cats deleted and it sounds good, but i really liked the way you car poped on the shifts and can you reply what has been done so that it sounds that way?
Hmm last time I checked under there, everything looks stock to me.
thanks for the reply. loved your video ;)
Thanks for watching!
I think the W211 is the best looking E class
this makes me miss vancouver lol
haha its nice during the summer, but its raining like 24/7 right now...
Do you have any videos on a w124? If not I think that would be a cool car to cover
Unfortunately I don't, but would love to review one! (especially the 500E)
Those wheels are stunning! What wheels are those?
Never mind, watched the rest of the video and found out lol
@@AmilThaha what are they ?
You can get cls 63 amg for the same price you could get a nice e55 for in Finland.
63s are unreliable that’s why
I would Hate the 60 mph speed limit !!! What's the Point of having one in the US ?
Go break the speed limit everybody here does even the people with slow cars.
It's a revenue maker for the government and police. BS indeed.
I am, going to buy one in 1 year but I am not sure about how often do I have du refill gas
If you drive it conservatively, you'll get about 20mpg. Its a supercharged v8 so your fuel economy won't be the best.
@@WestVanGarage I know but there way more up then down sides to buy this classic Mercedes. for an 2004 car an absolut Beaty :)
My dad has a E280 CDI (W211) and it has never let us down once I truly believe the W211 to be one of the best Mercs ever produced.
PS
I think you should wrap all the wood trim in carbon!
put the original rims back on it, it'll ride better.
beautiful car, and great review.
Is this a reliable car? How’s the gas?
If you plan on adding a crankshaft pulley, don’t. I did and it sheered my key way on my crankshaft.... not cheap
sorry to hear about that, hopefully your E55 is still treating you well?
West Van Garage I love the car, just wish it wasn’t giving me so many problems
@@nathansong1 sounds like you'll be selling it soon
Nice vehicle. Always liked this
Body style. The steering wheel is not my favorite. Otherwise I really want one.
I don't have an W220. But I would love to film an S55 and see how it compares with an E55 :)
i wonder how cool you can get with CLS which came after iT .. its the right step up 😉
The CLS AMG's are gorgeous cars, you can't beat its speed and looks.
The thing is first CLS modals has the same engine as E55 witch get change in E63
(W219 CLS-Class was based in W211 E-Class)
Personally if i would have E55 for five years i'll flip it for the W219 CLS63 or CLS55
🙌 etcher way both sharply gougers
What mod in your opinion will make CLS55 nice and sharp looking as your car
hmm tough to say. Truthfully, the CLS looks amazing in its stock form.
where i can buy this super car
btw this is my dream car.
Prefer the looks of the W211 over the CLS. The CLS may have some cool features like its coupe esque window styles but the E-Class just feels more pleasing to my eyes. Btw I just subscribed. Hardly could I find reviews of the E55 nowadays 😉.
Men I wish I have the e55 in my country
What spoiler did you buy?
Amazing car, I am eyeing a well maintained 2004 for $18k. Prices are going up.
That's too high tbh bro look for 10k to 14k
Look at 07-09 facelift E550
@@iheartgs400 why
Mr. TAMW overall better build quality the best of 211’s quality control wise was facelifted versions of car, no sbc as well.
Best engine
the only downside is that all AMG cars are automatics.
Thats right, not all M113k's are tuned the same. Depends on the car. For instance, the SL55 has roughly 495 hp/517 tq since it has a shorter exhaust.
Still can’t find these wheels lol. Are these Mercedes wheels or aftermarket?
aftermarket, niche m113 I believe?
Do you have the stock exhaust on?
as far as I know, it looks stock to me
I want to buy the W211 E200 Kompressor. I don't care about the performance .. I care about the beauty and low taxes. Is way way better and most beautiful than W212.
Does it overheat in hot weather? like middle east hot days of summer
As long as the cooling system is in order, it shouldn't overheat, but it will definetly heat soak.
They're great when the SBC pump fails on at speed
they're replaced for free my mercedes
Marvin Bradley it is a 25 year warranty on it
Not outside of the US is dosen't
Marvin Bradley sucks 2 sucks
Whats Better E55 Or E63
My only negatives were hard-steering, SBC unit, being too heavy. no spare tire. To compensate for bouncy handling shift into sport-mode which will harden the ride and you'll get a better feel. I loved my 2003 E55 and sorry that I sold it. My most perfect car was a 1990 Infiniti Q45, 278hp but at 140mph it felt like 55mph, from 91 it went downhill..
