I am one of the few that actually likes Still of the night and Poison's covers, if she likes the songs, she goes ahead and covers them, she is free now. However, this Peter Gabriel cover man, fuck... this is the shit. She blew me away singing this live, it is really a change for her and she nailed the song, dark and melancholic just like the lyrics..
I really think that she is now prepared to compose an entire album all by herself. Only thing I could point out is that live she sings it even darker and lower and that is even better than on the album. Congratulations Mrs Turunen you deserve all the recognition for all your hard work, it paid off.
Ligeia Noire I as well like her evolution but I'm not so sue about the covers. They're excellent but I think it shows some kind of incapacity to create her own music, up to a point, and thus she ends up to the covers which are in safe zone, something that already exists.
Bobby Truck Bobby she needs small steps, she is smart, she is not going to go and do everything all by herself and fall flat on her ass, she has no experience as a composer, so she works hard, she asks for help, she learns, she makes mistakes and learns again, that's how you grow as a composer, so these covers are a must have for me, they teach her and most of all they give her pleasure. I like that, no one does that, you know, including one favourite cover in an album. Hope she keeps on doing it, It is not like she lacks songs, this new album she has more than enough for two albums already. I loved Darkness it was perfect. now i wonder which one will be next.
Seriously, I absolutly love the early work of Peter Gabriel(not to say all his work) and this is just a perfect match

Great singer, amazing Peter Gabriel song. Very bad cover. No real feeling, only that "drama" that doesn't match the song. Not even close to the "darkness" of the original one.
I love covers, but this is absolute trash. Please, don't get me wrong - Tarja has a beautiful voice. However, she lacks the timing Peter provides in the original, which is a linchpin to the songs structure. The production of her version feels rushed, and overall makes the song just seem like filler for the album. Call me crazy, but version is quite sub-par.
After listening to it a second time - I found she falls flat as well during the bridge. This could be purposeful, but very bush-league.
It is not an easy song to cover. I think she did a really good job considering that but still it is not my favourite song of the album. I like her heavier covers waaay better. (Yes, I like Poison LOL)
I really like it, I dare say I prefer her version to the original. I just think you saying her version is trash was a bit harsh because it is a cover, so it is her perspective of the song, if it was meant to be like the original there was no point in covering it, right?
its actually funny all what you've said it was tarja's intention from the the very begining 1.- change of the tempo, she wanted to rush this version even tho she likes the original she didnt wanted to sing it like the original (you've got to remember this is a cover it's pretty much her own interpretation).
2.- "very bush-league" she's a big fan of bush lol
I think it is very difficult to judge covers fairly because it's hard to rid yourself of the bias caused by the version you heard first, and your preferred artist and genre.
I heard Darkness in the context of Tarja's album and was both surprised and fascinated by it. It sounded unusual for Tarja, but then, the whole album contains unusual elements and is rather daring, so it doesn't stick out all that much. In fact, it fits so well into the album that I didn't even immediately grok it was a cover when I looked into the booklet and saw Peter Gabriel listed as the songwriter; my first thought was that he wrote it for her. I know, stupid. But I believe the precise fact that (unlike her other covers) it isn't obvious that it is a cover means something positive, as in she made it her own.
Later I heard Peter Gabriel's original and it didn't do much for me. Admittedly, I have listened to it only once so far. But I felt it was too slowly paced, quiet and sparsely arranged. For better or worse, Tarja's take on the song is simply easier to listen to, catchier. I really love Tarja's voice, but I enjoy PG's voice a whole lot, too, and I listen to a lot of progressive rock and other more "difficult" music, so I don't think I'm overly biased against him.
I'm not saying Tarja's approach is better. I guess you could say by making it faster, heavier and more accessible she missed the point of the song - fair enough. I just happen to enjoy it more this way, while the original failed to pique my interest. Call me superficial or a philistine all you want. I actually lean a bit elitist, admittedly, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate a "populist" approach to music at all, not in the least. I mean, I have no illusions about Nightwish and Tarja solo, I realise very well that even in their most unorthodox moments this is still, after all, very accessible music.
