  • This 'What is a garage band?' feature was filmed for UK music show 'The Tube' on 2 September 1984 at the Pindar of Wakefield (latterly the Water Rats) in Kings Cross, London.
    Includes The Stingrays, The Tall Boys, The Milkshakes and The Prisoners (the legendary Star Trek clip).
    The more ardent Trash/Garage/Medway spotters may be able to identify in the audience the exeedingly fresh faces of David Taylor, Wolf Howard and Vic Templar, not to mention the near omnipresence of a certain Ms Emin!

    Mate, I was coming back from Newcastle after visiting my kids in Newcastle. I walked with my suitcase past the Pindar of Wakefield and saw all these people outside looking like 50's types. I'd liked the Cramps so I thought bugger it I'll go in 'ere for a pint and walked straight into a triple bill of Milkshakes, Sting-Rays and Prisoners. I got home late but I'd seen the light!!!!!!!!!¬

    I adored The Stingrays, still do. Not much video exists of them sadly, I still have a scar from a gig of theirs in Sheen, 1985. This is great thanks for posting it.

    Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century, Billy Childish is still wild. I hear a Milkshakes box set will be out in May. Semper fi.

    I remember watching this and buying the E.P. (I think it was from an Our Price in Bournemouth..) My mate Paul had a mag called (I think) New Sounds New Styles (or something like that) which had an ad for the Hurricane 45. I was hooked and ended up getting Thewisermiserdemelza LP (Armadillo,Bournemouth) and A Taste of Pink shortly after in Kensington (another Our Price?) Paul and I eventually saw them at Poole Arts Centre,leaving when The Ramones came on (crap) What an awesome band.

    The girl sitting with The Milkshakes' Billy Childish (and dancing in the front row) is a teenage Tracey Emin ... the future 'bad girl' of Brit art scene... Mad Tracey of Margate as she has been known.

    I remember seeing the milkshakes and the prisoners at the Venue, Victoria early '84. They were supporting the Playn Jayn who utterly demolished both of them. The Jayn were way superior to any of these acts shown here - they really understood the 60's garage/psych sound and had their own original take on it (2 x lead singers).
    Unfortunately non of their performances appear to have been filmed which is a shame as their records were weak in comparison.

    • @numbnutone
      @numbnutone 6 лет назад +2

      Thats just your opinion. I saw the Prisoners support Playn Jayn at least 3 times and the Prisoners where much better. All I remember about the Plyan Jayn was that they were like most bands I saw....Boring...Best live act of these lot were the Stingrays. The Prisoners were really good and the Milkshakes were also pretty good.
