As a kid I LOVED when my parents took me to a store that had foam gliders. We would always play with them until the wings broke off and could not be repaired with duct tape. However, I always wondered how far a foam glider would fly if it were thrown off of an incredibly high platform… like a mountain!?!@! We hiked up to the tallest point we had access too (Mt. Allen in the Santa Monica Mountains) and threw our glider out into the wind. The result was MIND BLOWING!!! I’m so proud of our little foam glider/GoPro set up. The footage is so beautiful. Let me know down below if the glider exceeded your expectation or how we could have gotten it to go further!
Well, it was lift, but a very specific kind. It’s not Newtonian lift (high pressure below the wing) or Bernoullian lift (low pressure above the wing). You threw it in a special way, allowing for a phenomena called ridge lift to occur. The flight path followed a ridge line. On each side of the ridge there is wind blowing in opposite directions. When the winds hit the mountain they both flow up, pushing up on the glider. The other two kinds of lift still occurred and were necessary, but it was this special help that allowed the glider to fly so far.
I have always loved science, and I love your videos! I literally found your channel about 2 hours ago and have been watching your videos since then. I subscribed right away. You're Awesome! KEEP SCIENCE ALIVE!
Hey nick!! You did so amazing on Americans got talent!! I haven't really been watching your videos for too long but since I started watching, I've learned a bunch and I am constantly entertained. I really hope the judges see that :)❤️
met this guy through smosh lab but he really has some cool stuff .. really amazed as well as enlightened hope u make more vedios which makes people try new things.. other wise who will even think of this ..tks a lot
The explanation of lift he gave is a common misconception. If it's true, then it doesn't explain how paper airplanes fly. My memory might fail me, but I believe that lift is actually generated by redirecting air downward, thus propelling the plane upward. You can fact check me with a paper NASA wrote entitled "Incorrect Lift Theory"
I'm upset I didn't know of you before AGT. Seriously I love channels like this, and yours especially. You're so enthusiastic about science, and it doesn't matter the subject. Not only have you earned yourself a sub, I REALLY hope you go far in AGT just due to how unique your audition is! Thank you for... Existing? I don't know... I should stop talking now...
I have watching you really early on... i have always loved your channel... so I was just casually watching America's got Talent and saw you.. "OMG ITS NICK ITS NICK!"
I thought you was going to explain thermals in this video too. I think that's the reason why the foam plane stayed up as it hit some thermal columns (rising air formed on the ground from the warming of the surface by sunlight) generating thermal lift. Like how birds and manned gliders use thermals to soar and fly effortlessly. I guess you could do test flights during the day and night to see if this was indeed the case.
I totally agree with this... almost sure that's what happened because you can see in the video it going up at first... then I think the "sea breeze" carries it to the right.
Congratulations on being on America's Got Talent!!! I really love your videos and I always learn something new when a video comes out! Hope you go very far and win AGT!!!
Man when I saw you on Americas got talent and you said you were a science teacher, I am over here saying this guys is going to make the judges eat there words and you did! You are so cool and your americas got talent audition was phenomenal never saw science like that :D
riiight! I literally saw this foam glider in a 99 cent store, bought it, put it in my closet, and then 6 months later came up with this video idea... they're usually around during the summer
Lol you posted this video on my birthday, just saw you’re video flying over, so i clicked, really good channel, it was fun to watch (and i’m a little late ;) )
was watching AGT today and saw you get featured on there and all of a sudden, this vid appears on my recommended... I think the nsa is watching me. congrats!!!
Fantastic foamie video free flight and incredibly nice flight conditions!! Thumbs up Cheers!Enjoyed your enthusiasm and determination to repair after crashing it.!!!

If you cant fix with duct tape then you didn't use enough duct tape.

It can fix the plane but not the weight
So cool imagine throwing it off from Mount Everest

I like how you didnt put it to 10 minutes
I really can't imagine how you were able to find it and retrieve it!
The thing I love about Nick is how he titles his videos, they seem like clickbait, but they are as genuine as they come.
how did you find it? you should have strapped a GPS tracker on it.
We totally could have, perhaps next time!
You have also followed with a drone
5:28 Legend says it's still flying ;)
Easier way to get drone footage
Tape a GoPro to a foam plane
ReVeRt Fire you can’t really call it drone footage anymore can you
I love how when he tries to be funny no one laughs and it just ends up being awkward

You killed it on AGT!!! Literally screamed when I saw you

Also, can you, like, upload the whole video of the flight? i think it would be cool to see, all in one video without breaks
hey! yes, I will do that ... it is really cool

Try waltmart.com see if they ship international, if not ebay. I see them all the time at waltmart do. I bought one there aswell.

Should also have shown the full, uninterrupted flight. Even a split screen between the flight cam & the follow cam synced.

Thermal or orographic (ridge) lift. Probably both, actually.
That was more likely ridge lift. Wind pushing up the mountain causing the lift. Glider guys depend on that regularly.
yep I downvoted because he is teaching the Kids wrong.. the power of Lift is definitely the thermals.
No planes were harmed in the making of this video
Can you tell me how did you manage to lose a shoe?
lol, we found the shoe... the brush pulled it out of my bag
Nick Uhas ohhh. i thought it fell off of your foot.
When the cam is in the air it was so beautiful
