    As a kid I LOVED when my parents took me to a store that had foam gliders. We would always play with them until the wings broke off and could not be repaired with duct tape. However, I always wondered how far a foam glider would fly if it were thrown off of an incredibly high platform… like a mountain!?!@!
    We hiked up to the tallest point we had access too (Mt. Allen in the Santa Monica Mountains) and threw our glider out into the wind. The result was MIND BLOWING!!! I’m so proud of our little foam glider/GoPro set up. The footage is so beautiful.
    And the reason all of this is even possible is because of the wing of the plane. The wing has a special shape that allows for “lift”. Lift is generated when there is high pressure below the wing and low pressure above it. The explanation for how this happens is actually very advanced. The full explanation can be found here: www.allstar.fiu...

  • @sketchyAnalogies
    @sketchyAnalogies 6 лет назад +1

    Well, it was lift, but a very specific kind. It’s not Newtonian lift (high pressure below the wing) or Bernoullian lift (low pressure above the wing). You threw it in a special way, allowing for a phenomena called ridge lift to occur. The flight path followed a ridge line. On each side of the ridge there is wind blowing in opposite directions. When the winds hit the mountain they both flow up, pushing up on the glider. The other two kinds of lift still occurred and were necessary, but it was this special help that allowed the glider to fly so far.

  • @chaotic3124

      The explanation of lift he gave is a common misconception. If it's true, then it doesn't explain how paper airplanes fly. My memory might fail me, but I believe that lift is actually generated by redirecting air downward, thus propelling the plane upward. You can fact check me with a paper NASA wrote entitled "Incorrect Lift Theory"

    I thought you was going to explain thermals in this video too. I think that's the reason why the foam plane stayed up as it hit some thermal columns (rising air formed on the ground from the warming of the surface by sunlight) generating thermal lift. Like how birds and manned gliders use thermals to soar and fly effortlessly. I guess you could do test flights during the day and night to see if this was indeed the case.

    • @NickUhas
      @NickUhas  7 лет назад +2

      I totally agree with this... almost sure that's what happened because you can see in the video it going up at first... then I think the "sea breeze" carries it to the right.

    • @Zoidberg227
      @Zoidberg227 7 лет назад

      Thermal or orographic (ridge) lift. Probably both, actually.

    • @garrykennedy5484
      @garrykennedy5484 7 лет назад +2

      That was more likely ridge lift. Wind pushing up the mountain causing the lift. Glider guys depend on that regularly.

    • @jodokf
      @jodokf 6 лет назад

      yep I downvoted because he is teaching the Kids wrong.. the power of Lift is definitely the thermals.

    With some packing tape applied properly first, you could have made the plane nearly indestructible for the way you were using it, and not have had to repair it prior to your successful flight, which would have saved you some time. Packing tape dramatically contributes to the tensile strength of the structure, in this case, the styrofoam glider, thus preventing most serious damage from occurring. FYI
    Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! 🙂

    Just to add a bit more detail to the explanation of the flight. The reason it maintained height initially was because the updraft (slope lift) of the air being forced up the mountains created enough lift to compesate for the drag therefore maintaining height. Eventually it ventured out of the slope lift and the drag took over causing the gradual decent. If you launched into the air on the opposite side of the mountain (the lee) it would have dropped like a brick due to the downdraught there.

    We didn't have those when I was a kid! We had to tie feathers to a Rock when I grew up in the 60's. Also in case you haven't heard this one. I used to walk 20 miles to school, and 30 miles back, all uphill. But honestly, no we didn't have those in the 60's and 70s. Now imagine how my feathered Rock would have done with the GoPro.

    I know it's hard to determine but the center of mass has to be at the same spot as the center of lift and balance so it flies in a straight line

    this guy is pretty smart. even if he doesn't make it very far in AGT at least he'll be promoting his youtube channel.

    I used to work at a hotel by the beach, one day someone threw one of these off a balcony and it just flew from one end of the hotel to the other, back and forth, I must have watched for 5 minutes before I had to go back to work. Must have been caught in an air pocket.
    Funny thing is my parents bought me one waaaaay back, I just saw one at the store the other day, then I get on youtube and see this! Time to buy one again

    Can you store onions and potatoes together?
    NO PLASTIC BAGS: Don't ever store onions in plastic bags. That will accelerate sprouting and spoilage because of the lack of air circulation. NO POTATOES NEARBY: Potatoes and onions should not be stored together. They give off gases that will accelerate spoilage of each other.

    If you would have lost the glider, then that would be littering in a state park! Glad you got it back. By the way, I run up that trail and then down to Sycamore Canyon and back, don't wimp out.

    'This' wing isn't designed to generate lift. All wings are designed to generate lift. That's what a wing is.
