This was filmed in a rooom with led walls. Eli programmed the back ground. The air conditioning was out so they were sweating the whole time. My mother told me is a great one too. Miracle of sound gave them 10/10 ale horns for this
Just an instant classic for Voiceplay! Another one with J’s rapping is their cover of “Superstition” originally by Stevie Wonder. But J’s also got his own solo stuff/channel: “Am I Here” “TGIF Glide” and he’s just done a great cover of “Frontin’” (Pharrell Williams)
I enjoyed your reaction- thanks for coming back to Voice Play! Yes they do all of their own production and Eli (their bald, rock tenor) does their lighting and technical effects. Just to refresh your memory, J. None was the one that did the rapping part and is a former full time member of this group. J. None left the group in 2021 to join the Navy but he comes back frequently when he is on military leave to sing with them so we think of him as a part time member of the group. J. None sings bass with the Navy band but has an incredible voice range and beatboxing and rapping skills. His style of rapping really fit in well here as it is a battle song and his lyrics included the military speak. For more of J. None rapping with Voice Play, you can check out "Superstition" or "Mission Jingle Bells". J. None does have his own solo channel that showcases more of his rapping, beatboxing, voice range, and production skills. If you like Viking theme, definitely check out their cover of "My Mother Told Me". Their cover of "Hoist The Colors will also blow you away!😃
The 'sky' shot was actually a 3D rendered environment put together in the Unreal Engine by the groups high tenor, Eli Jacobson, as are the rest of the visuals in the background, the ships on the water, etc. That specific shot was probably captured in the computer, but the rest of the video was shot in front of giant LED wall that was displaying the 3D environment, like how they filmed shows like the Mandalorian.
Geoff's low note in this is a B0, which is the same note as the open B on a 5 or 6-string bass... an octave and a 5th deeper than where the typical vocal bassline ends.
@@kriswelanetz9537, to do a solid B0 subharmonic still requires being able to do a B1 in chest voice, which is beyond 99% of men and even 50% of basses.
Great reaction, thanks! All of those strange, stray sounds were from Layne - including that amazing creaking door when J walked in. Layne also arranged this one. He did bring in an additional song writer to do the rap lyrics. One of the things I always respect about them is that they don't hesitate to call someone in to help - and to learn from - when they think it's necessary. They did it more often in the past, as they've absorbed more they need that support less. What's most important - at least to me - is that they keep growing. They are always challenging themselves to do more and the results are phenomenal.
@@Wildecat10SNC was the second a cappella group I actually paid attention to and enjoyed. Rockappella was the first. It just isn’t Christmas without listening to SNC’s Christmas Cancan💃😊.
They create a karaoke track for their patrons, that's what they've been using that in the outro for a year or so. On this one, I have to remind myself that J didn't actually walk through that creaky door, that was all Layne. J None does have a channel and does his own work as well. Just for fun, try Voiceplay's ridiculous version of Drunken Sailor. There is an original bridge written by Geoff.
Yeah, you're back again with VoicePlay 🎉 That was the first song I heard by them and it got me hooked ❤ "My mother told me" is amazing too, but you simply can't go wrong with anything by them 🤷🏻♀️ Eli channeling his inner viking or pirate is always a treat, so I would suggest "Hoist the colours" too 🙏🏼
Always love more VoicePlay! VoicePlay is my favorite group! They are all insanely talented and not just vocally. They are 100% indie. Check out the credits in their video descriptions to see how very, very much they do for themselves...from arrangements to video editing. They have a very active community who daily seek out reactions to their work (and to bass singer Geoff Castellucci's solo channel). React to them regularly and you'll see us flock to your channel! We're really good about liking and subscribing too. Once we each discover VoicePlay, we listen to their catalog and then go searching for new and old reactions. They release tunes monthly so no end in sight 🙂The patrons listed are only their highest tiers. "My Mother Told Me" came first and "Valhalla Calling" was a kind of sequel. Geoff's solo December release has 1.3M views so far...wish that you had seen it. Note - His solo channel isn't acapella.
The funniest moment of their behind the scenes video for me was the expression that went across J’s face when he realized he was going to lip sync that lightning fast rap. J None has solo stuff on his own channel - just FYI. And yes, Eli has gotten into the Mariah Carey range.
VP decided to put the rap in in their arrangement of this - it is not in the original - great job right there! They do sometimes layer voices to get a fuller sound. You are right, for an independent group they are amazing - they have way more talents than just singing. Thoroughly nice chaps too! 😉🌹🕊
Also the lowest note on a 5-string bass, a perfect 5th deeper than a 4-string bass, and an octave and a 5th deeper than where a typical vocal bassline ends.
This song was my introduction to VoicePlay about 18 months ago, and I've been hooked ever since! Yeah, check out My Mother Told Me. These guys are so freakin creative and beyond talented! You should check out their newest one "Party of Your Lifetime" that Warframe (the game) commissioned them to cover. I listened to the original from the game and VP's version blows the original out of the water and shatters it into a million pieces! They shoulda just got VP to do it from the get go, but at least the got on the ball and had them cover it! They I guess had randomly heard VP's cover of Sleeping in the Cold Below (from the original Warframe game.) You should check that out too, it's a banger! VP does great gaming music covers!
- Miracle Of Sound is actually 1 guy from Ireland. He makes music (ranging from folk to rock/metal) often inspired by various movies, video games or TV shows (he's got 5 or 6 different songs inspired by/based on Game of Thrones). Valhalla Calling was inspired by Assassin's Creed Valhalla and he's done several versions of it since, some more rock than folk. - The rapping was VoicePlay's addition to the song,
My Mother Told Me is an awesome one, it's the first song of theirs I've heard. If you like the sea shanty vibe then Drunken Sailor is another really good one. Enemy is also great, got some techno vibes. I could just make a giant list of their stuff, or Geoff's stuff (I See Fire or 16 Tons), it's all so well done!
Ah, some of VoicePlay's creme de la creme! This used to be my favorite (not that I hate any of them) VP song, until their cover of Thriller came out. Yes, THAT Thriller. And yes, J. None has his own channel and is on Spotify. Geoff Castellucci, the bass, has his own channel too, of Deep Bass Covers. Fully worth checking out. 💙
Definitely do My Mother Told Me. They actually did it before doing this one. Also please do the other video above My Mother Told Me.... Party Of Your Lifetime. Both are absolutely fantastic
Enjoyed your reaction. Layne isn't afraid of giving the guys a couple of extra guide tracks to layer for more epic style production . The outro was a bit of the karaoke track their Patreons get every month. If you like gaming or boyband type things you might enjoy their latest video production of "Party of Your Lifetime" sponsored by Warframe for the debut of 1999... Voiceplay as On-Lyne the in game boyband. The makers of Warframe saw their early 2024 release of "Sleeping in the Cold Below" and reached out. As other commenters have noted they have a few gaming songs " The Dragon Born Comes" and "Halo" both also very bassy and an older "Still Alive" (for pure goofiness) as well as "ACA Top 10 Video Games". I think they also have a couple from League of Legends, not a gamer I just love the game music.
You mentioned highnotes, their queen in 5 min medley and panic at the disco in 4 min (part 1 and 2) as well as voiceplays covers of attention, the death of a bachelor, dream on and the lion sleeps tonight are the first that come to my mind.
And Stands by Me. Mykal’s vocals are stellar. I was so astonished when I had read that Earl used to be the tenor 2 because he had such a high voice. But Mykal is on another level.
Glad to see you guys doing another VoicePlay review! If you want to see a whole different direction with them, you could see their fun stuff like Boy Bands in 5 Minutes, or some of their Disney movie pieces. They do a HUGE variety of stuff.
Definitely do My Mother Told Me😅 That one was done during the pandemic and they had to film it separately. Eli, the high tenor did the backgrounds for that one too.
If you like the viking stuff, try out "If I Had A Heart" from the show Vikings by The Bass Gang, featuring Ekaterina Shelehova. I doubt you'll be disappointed...
3 B0's by Geoff, Layne did the door creak, J None the rap, Eli and Cesar pulling the stops out as the tenors. Cool stuff. Oh and Eli got to do the backgrounds! My Mother Told Me is another Eli doing the backgrounds, in Valhalla Calling Cesar is wearing Jose Rosario, Jr, cloak from My Mother Told Me (a true antique song from either 9th or 13th Century depending on whose telling the tale - Old Norse or Icelandic (9th or 13th). Jose has been in Hoist the Colours, Drunken Sailor, a couple of minis/shorts Dr. Who theme, Merry Christmas Holidays, and That's What Friends are For but most of the time he's on stage like in Hamilton.
You really have to do My mother told me, another of my fav is Dragonborn comes, there is something with game music... "Sleeping in the cold below" (Warframe) is another and their covers of Imagine Dragons...I can go on and on...They are just not good singers but their videos are very well done!
I wonder if you’d find it interesting to react to one of their more stripped back songs as a point of comparison? Maybe ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ (although not if you’re recovering from a recent heartbreak - those lyrics are surgically sharp); ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’; ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’; or ‘Stand By Me’.
They do a lot of layering to get that big sound. "My Mother Told Me" is a bit older. The lyrics are based on a millennia-old poem by Egill Skallagrímsson. Check his Wikipedia page for details. VP does a fantastic cover. I recommend their "Classical Chaos", a fabulous medley of classical songs. I features Rachel Potter, who has collaborated with them several times. If you do review it, I think you would find the interview The Charismatic Voice did with Layne (the beatboxer) on the mixing. That is probably too long for a review (~ 30 minutes) but is nerdilly interesting. ruclips.net/video/Cxhr3cUdDs4/видео.html
