Guys stop complaining about NL's crappy computer, he was just trying to replicate the aesthetic of playing Half-Life 1 on a 1997 NVDIA RIVA 128 GPU
Actually its the devs enabling Lumen in a UE5 engine, that thing kills your performance like crazy because Lumen actually is like ray tracing, it's global illumination.
I had to run various cvar in engine.ini and scalability to try to rope in the performance losses, and in the end the graphics looks EXACTLY THE SAME with only the lighting being affected a bit. Reflection is still crap with lumen on or off, so I just disabled it no matter what.
15-30 fps during busy areas → 144 fps.

It is insane to me that out of this streamer group NL is the one who refuses to invest in a better PC (man couldn't even load helldivers)

@@TheLibraryofLetourneau Honestly I think the biggest problem isn't the age of the machine, it's a bunch of things all at the same time:
- The PC is probably caked in 15 inches of cat hair and choking to death overheating; if you live with pets, you need to clean your computer out like 2 times per year at least or it gets _really_ bad
- The thermal paste on the CPU might be old or improperly applied, causing overheating
- The GPU might not have a good connection to the motherboard, causing it to fall back to a slower PCIe speed
- The SSD might be close to full, causing slower reads and writes when a TRIM event happens
- The fans might be set to "silent" since they would be at 100% if there was already overheating
And that's just the hardware, the software can be just as bad:
- Not updating Windows, hardware drivers, etc. can delay fixes - computers in general barely work at all; updates are needed to fix problems that newer software uncovers
- Not _restarting_ after updating Windows, hardware drivers, etc. - making updates is hard enough without worrying about situations where part of the computer is updated and another part isn't, so developers just delay the hard parts of updates to happen after a reboot when everything can start fresh
- Installing random programs and extensions that run in the background constantly - if you don't use it weekly at least, get rid of it because it's a liability and interrupts the CPU doing more important things
- Installing an antivirus (or multiple) that isn't Windows Defender - everything else is a scam that still slows your PC, Windows Defender still slows your PC, but at least it's made by the people who make the whole operating system and it uses the same virus database that everyone else uses
- Installing straight-up viruses that mine bitcoin or steal credentials, it's totally possible that k8's channel was hacked this way (unless she just put her password into "www.youtube.not-a-virus .ru")

I used engine.ini and scalability.ini cvar to turn those crap off.
My monitor can do 144 fps anyways, but I'm sure I can hit like 300-500 fps.
NL's shit has been so damn laggy lately. I tried to watch this live but the voice chat sounding like the audio buffer trickle-vomiting all the data fucked me up.
Yo man chill he doesn't need a new PC. Streaming is only his job that has made him a millionaire why would he invest in it

NL's PC aside i like this game. It doesn't really seem like his preferred type of game but it was some nice chaotic fun with the boys.

NL needs to upgrade his computer but also, this game looks like system shock 2, why is it so resource intense in the first place
it looks like the lighting engine is fairly intensive, but other than that, maybe it's loading a gigantic map?
This game has ray tracing so that will always have a high fps tax
Lumen is global illumination, and is a feature of UE5. The problem is that it runs similar to raytracing and is super heavy on hardware.
This is the same with Nanites as well. Enable any of those and your hardware runs hot so fast.
The game engine is catered to cinematography, to make movies and such.
Turn off all those features via engine.ini and scalability.ini and it runs like a UE4 game.

UE5 has Lumen which is baked into the game. This causes massive FPS loss like from 144 fps to 30.
Turn them all off using modifications in a config file, and cvar command lines, like r.RayTracingEnabled=0, to turn everything off.

This game is great because it's one of those sanbox survival games but it has a straight forward story and progression so you're never lost and you always know exactly what you need to do, it even keeps a constant ping on the main objective. It's basically half-life 1/zomboid. I hate survival games but I love this because it's a real ass game. I thought it was going to be like lethal company or something but I love that it really is a sanbox coop campaign.
It's more like Grounded, where the map is 'open' to a point, and is vastly huge. The story is there and is waiting for you to complete it to progress with the map unlock.

I love when the nerds come out and say that playing a game at sub 60 fps is a moral failing, or at the very least so horribly disgusting nobody should have to put up with it. I imagine if you spent 18 hours a day on your computer, high performance at all times would matter to you but for the rest of us, a little sub 30fps gaming is not day ruining.
