    why are you setting fire to magnet sauce

    • @brainiac75

      As I explain in the video, I've always wanted to see how it reacts when burning near a magnet. Also a little to see how flammable it really is. I thought it was way more flammable...

    4:30 Anyone notice you could see the sound waves in the smoke? Sound waves are hard to illustrate, and therefore hard for students to visualize. A demonstration like this could help students get an intuitive grasp on how sound waves travel, and maybe even magnetic fields if you could suspect some magnetic iron dust in the smoke

      IKR!
      TL?DR: I did notice! But I wasn't sure if it was solely sound or if that was magnetic waves or inverse or the interface pattern or something else and all of the above because tbh I was mystified as to how tf a magnet was even powering it up or whatever the correct phenomenon is bc yeah I'm dumb. Growing up, we were always shown sound waves using more linear looking visuals like strings, but this DOES- you're right- prove to be a bit more fantastic. 💡Maybe a mix of this and that would work? Like say string and soup cans, something I saw as a kid,but now attaching one soup can you normally hear out of in a cloud of vapor/fume/smoke; eg the receiver is suspended in a large jug filled with a cloud of vapor/etc which is suppressed/trapped beneath pressure or anything that works and does not interfere with the string carrying the vibration.

    • @fzigunov

      Those are not sound waves though. They're instability waves on the convecting plume triggered by the speaker.

      Can you even call the fluid flammable considering how hard it was to light and even when it did flame it was a slow gentle burn. If you call that flammable, then that's most stuff...
      Maybe divide that point with the fluid earlier as far as playable since that interaction with fire is interesting (but damaging something so expensive maybe not the best idea)
      I'd be curious what would have happened on the ball with the paste. But I suppose the same thing as the dish.

    the ferripastes easy ability to burn is not bad its a feature
    has power run out ? no candles or flashlight? just grab a magnet a glass bowl and some ferripaste to make a nace candle that will hold on any metallic surface

    • @brainiac75
      @brainiac75  7 лет назад +22

      I doubt it would work just by mixing magnetite and epoxy glue. It will only spike, if the magnetite is covered by a surfactant. But it might work if the right surfactant is added. I have no clue which would work in epoxy.

      Hi. I haven't had ferrofluid near anything, that it wouldn't stick to. +TheZoneEnder mentions teflon equipment, which may be the best bet. The ferrofluid comes in a bottle marked 'HDPE Nalgene', but it doesn't seem perfect for it. Thanks for watching!

    • @Freigeist20789
      @Freigeist20789 7 лет назад +1

      So far we have tested a PFTE foil used for baking with a gridded surface structure and a rather smooth teflon block ..both did not really work. Staining is not not strong , but it still sticks easily.

    • @brainiac75
      @brainiac75  7 лет назад +8

      I'm not surprised. Those 10 nm magnetite particles will find holes and stick to anything solid in an air/solid boundary. Having ferrofluid in a glass container filled with a liquid (like salt water) seems to be the only place where ferrofluid only will stick to itself and not stain its surroundings.

    burned ferripaste looks awesome for some stop-motion backgrounds and effects.

    I'd be curious to see what happens if you were to run current through a wire covered in ferripaste/ferrofluid.
    Also, I found it interesting how when ferrofluid coating the ball magnet began to spike when heat via a match was applied.
    Good stuff.

    Ferro fluid does in fact dry up in loudspeakers. It takes only a few years for woofers to dry up which is why it's only in high maintenance speakers. Tweeters on the other hand are sealed better from the environment and hardly move meaning there's little air inside to dry it up. I had to replace the fluid in a loudspeaker I repaired a while back.

    Even the ribbed coil pumping hard in it will not make it splatter. Impressive.

    I love how ferripaste has fog on the bottom of the spikes when burning, like a miniature fantasy land :)

    The practical effects for a movie/show using the burned ferripaste could be interesting.

    4:10 something about that is magical to me... Just the humming and smoke and spikes as the magnet gets closer...

    Magnets hate fire lol. I wonder if there is a way to make a non staining version of this fluid.

    @7:37 I have been watching some effects from the magnetic fields, like curving the space? but I think they're visible because the magnets have a little influence on the camera, despite the distance.

    The smoke it made when he set it on fire and was trapped in with the paste was the most interesting thing to me

    At 7:49 when put fire close to the ferrofluid, the magnectic field is affected by the heat? It has to deal with Curie temperature or is about something else?
    Anyway, the video is cool, thanks for these informations.

    Maybe it would be easier to ignite ferrofluid with a jet flame, like from a butane burner

    awesome video dude! I wish I had a 4k tv for those amazing shots of the fluid doing it's thing :^)
    have you played around with the fluids and an electromagnet? If not you should team up with PhotonicInduction, he could probably make you a magnet to end all magnets (and the earths magnetic field lol)

    • @brainiac75
      @brainiac75  7 лет назад

      I actually haven't tried it with electromagnets - yet. It's definitely something I need to expand to in the future. So far I'm just more than busy making videos with the permanent magnets. Thanks for the suggestion, though. PhotonicInduction definitely could make a 'black hole'- magnet ruining anything in my house x)

    If you put two electrodes from a battery (for example 9V) into the liquids, will there be a change in density of the liquids, or any other changes?
