I have a classic car and I agree that you can't appreciate them as the people in their time appreciated them as the newest and greatest thing. As I was driving my classic car it felt like the closest thing there is to a time machine. Looking at the old dashboard, the old interior, it drives like old technology. Although I agree with the "It's old tech" belief, what if Ferrari pulled a Morgan and used some of their classic body shapes to shove brand new tech in to? Imagine that 308 rolling out of a dealership with the classic body, but on a brand new improved chassis with brand new suspension, drive, brakes, steering, engine or even motors.
At that point you could buy a newer car with all the relevant technology for probably a lot cheaper. Sure you can put brand new things in the car make it "new" but that just ruins any value the car had its an old car people who like old cars will love it for its vintage quality.
@@Dischingo Very true, but there is a very small pocket of car people that want that vintage car look with daily driver qualities. The Eagle E Type, Singer 911 and as I say, Morgan. I'd personally buy a Morgan Plus 4 over a BMW Z4 for example. Both two seater sports cars but the Morgan offers that vintage look. I'd imagine quite a few people would take a revised 308 over a new Ferrari of similar price, if it offered them a similar driving experience.
while it is cool to dream about, such a thing will never happen because of safety regulations. morgan (and other small manufacturers) are often exempt but FCA or even Ferrari alone could never get such an exemption.
I was a classic car snob until I saw Carroll Shelby talk about wanting to live another 100 years to witness the coming innovations. I can't imagine what else he would come up with...
Why, even after 8 years and 200,000 miles that I put on it, my 2004 S60R is hands down my favorite car ever. They made fun of it on Top Gear when it came out (and no, I don't have a Trilby to wear when driving it) it's not the fastest, but it isn't shamefully slow, it handles very, VERY well, it's luxurious without being snobbish, and it even has weird faults and quirks that any exotic does... heheh, but it is an all weather grand tourer and it does great for that role. It may not (probably does not!) fit you, but for me, it's still amazing. If that Ferrari didn't do that for me, it'd be gone, too. Like the Triumph Spitfire, the Charger, the Toyota Celica, the Mustang, the GLH Turbo, the Pontiac GTO, the SuperBee, all been in my life, and now are all history.
He never said anything like that the past is worthless. In fact a whole section was about how we need to keep part of our history to remember where we came from. I personally am frequently amazed at the ingenuity of people 50, 100, 200, 2000 years ago. That doesn't mean I want to drive a 1970s car - I remember them and they were horrible. You had to start repairing them in the first year or two, and they rusted out in 5.
It's a near death experience. He's realized his life was a sham. All thanks to the mass population. Which fooled him into buying into the red team, when He's not a Team player.
Reluctantly sold my Porsche 987 about 6 months ago. Unlike James’s feelings towards his Ferrari, I loved it and miss it dearly. Since a very early age I have always wanted a Porsche. Luckily I was in a kind of one off financial position to buy one as a second car 2 years ago. Recently my house needed building work completing and had to make the supreme sacrifice. I doubt I will be able to replace it, but would buy another in a heart beat if I could. Yes its not the fastest but we all have a connection to things. Just thought Id share that with you :)
Absolutely valid points and made me question my desire of 80s machines.. having said that I do truly believe that digital can never replace the charm of analog.. and there’s just something cool about a classic that a new exotic cannot capture
Keep in mind he is talking about the 308 a car that is known to not drive very well. He bought it because it was his childhood dream. There are lot's of cars of the 80s and 90s that are known to drive marvelous and indeed do. I have got for example a 993 in my garage and it's my favourite of the cars i own.
000GunterGabriel000 I think you might be missing his point, he isn’t saying you can’t enjoy old cars, but a latest generation 911 will smash your 993, and be more comfortable and easier to drive.
I totally agree with you nostalgia can be overrated! Technology that seemed amazing at the time can seem unimpressive and disappointingly antiquated now ! I find these days even though i never forget the past I live in the present and look the the future for exciting new things. Great video. 👍

Jay Leno does not own any Ferraris. when asked why,This is what he said... I can take my Porsche out for a ride on a Saturday, when I get home ,I just have to wash it. When you take a Ferrari out for a ride on a Saturday, when you get home, you have to work on it....
And that's why Jay Leno is a nice funny guy, but his knowledge of driving and mechanics, is almost zero. He may know the history of every nolt in a car, but he can't take a turn or understand why that bolt is there.

It's down to Amazon to release the next special, the trio have done their bit. For obvious reasons they haven't been able to film anymore and who knows when they will be able to.
My only gripe with the lovely James May...He said "utility" several times and compared it to clothes..and teapots and sofas....A car is not a utilitarian thing for some of us....Its not that i have to work on them all the time...Its that i ENJOY them all the time. Its never a utility to have an old fantastic car.
Jeff Underwood it’s what he’s saying, the purpose of the car in the 70s was to make you happy when you drove it and be fast but as time have changed and he has experienced new things the car has stopped fulfilling its purpose in him
I once got a giftcard for my birthday to drive a Ferrari for 20 minutes. It could have been a 308. It was the most horrible driving experience. Almost no power, clunky gearchange, pedals to close to each other. I was overtaken by a Fiat Panda while getting on the highway.... and glad I could climb out of it and get in my comfi old Volvo.
Finally at the end of his life he gets time to think. He realized his life was a sham. Consumed by others. Made to join the RED team. Forced to do 8000 RPM when he actually wanted to only do 2000. Maybe someday he'll realize he should've bought a spare ferrari for NO downtime. The downfall of the Consumer is near. It's already happening. The Internet is educating already.

James May has a mentality I hope every person has when they are elderly. He sees that older is not always better, and sees the value of new developments.
Whilst I agree, you could say; boring is just another way of saying it is easier because it takes less concentration (hence boredom) which means you can drive for longer without feeling drained.
I used to do some rallying, and since that, in the last 10 yrs, haven't found a car that even comes close in terms of driver feedback. Feeling what the car is doing etc. Everything has become so soft now, yes i suppose its more 'luxury' but i dont like driving anymore because of it.
@@2KXMKR Absolutely, and they had a discussion on that on GT season 3, where Hammond needed some time alone with the Hellephant

Car tech moved on way too brilliantly in the last 20 years, completely logical to out the analog based tech and move onto Micro based..

That T-shirt is actually about butter (or salad cream or branston pickle) :)
The Ferrari is "old tech" whilst having a mechano bike in the background, also I did wonder where that went. Nice to know Dr. Bim kept it.
James May had me going for a bit. I really thought he had sold the Speciale
Yeah, the Speciale is somewhat old tech compared to current supercars.
Absolutely valid points and made me question my desire of 80s machines.. having said that I do truly believe that digital can never replace the charm of analog.. and there’s just something cool about a classic that a new exotic cannot capture
Lightness, less noise dampening, none or hydraulic powersteering, skinny tires, making it fun to test the limits at somewhat safe speeds.
It's more about what that machine means to you. If that era's significant to you, then there's its value.
It's all about what floats yor boat.
