Vincent Van Gogh always comes to mind when people bring this point up. One of the most influential artists in history who started being an artist well into his adulthood (27?)
@-- I started as a teen but wasn't really into it as I am with writing. I've been trying my hardest to improve as of late being 27 also. But I get scared of posting on Tik Tok because I know people will be ruthless if they find my age and believe it doesn't match my art style
i actually just started learning 3 month ago. gotta admit my drawing is... rough if i have to put it into words, but, i think i can improve. i mean i MUST improve.
@@IceNKaffe Sick! That early stage of about 3-6 months in picking up a new skill is awesome - it's the stage of "I'm having lots of fun figuring this stuff out and connecting the dots". I'm currently trying to learn the violin with 0 musical background (I'm 21), and man it's hard, but so fun at the same time
It’s crazy how people (who are usually not even artists themselves) freak out over beginners doing beginner things or just having a certain style… they’re acting like a pipe bomb the size of the megalodon shark has been discovered underneath the ground… 💀
I hate those comments of “oh…” or “WHAT 🔥🔥🔥”. Like… that is just bullying. Why is it socially acceptable for people to bully and harass artists of every medium. From commission artists, jewelers, sculptors, fashion designers, to even just people casually posting to doodles they made in class. It’s considered okay to insult people’s entire being for “DARING” to make something. It’s like art is the target that replaced the STEM “nerd”. And when people call it out it’s always “well that’s my opinion” or “it’s not that big of a deal”. Guess what’s not an opinion? The fact that they are still harassing artists because they are pathetic hollow people.
Comments like that is why I abhor tiktok. It's a cesspool of kids whose only hobby is being rabid bullies. They all sound the exact same too, like bots incapable of forming their own thoughts.
people are judging and not critiquing, critiquing would be consensual and actually informative while what’s happening is people making fun of others and not actually helping someone who is passionate about drawing.
more like bullying tbh....critiquing, while usually consensual, benefits the artist if they decide to listen, correct the mistakes and heed the advice. this on the other hand seems to me like cyberbullying
@@MohammedAgbadi I can't tell you how many times I run into people who say they're "critiquing" something when they're really just putting someone's work down. You can tell someone what you think is wrong with their work without coming off as attacking them. Not saying you have to be all flowery or super positive when critiquing someone's work but bare minimum people should make sure their words comes across as being directed at the work not the person.
@@MohammedAgbadi I think the issue is that people use criticism to justify bullying. It’s a good thing that sometimes people take advantage of in order to excuse their own horrible behavior. Like parents who insist hitting their children is actually “discipline” and cry and whine about people just being too oversensitive these days. Discipline is GOOD, not disciplining your child when they misbehave is BAD, therefore if you’re against HOW they discipline their child, you’re just an oversensitive pansy who must be against discipline as a whole. Same thing here. Criticism is GOOD. People refusing to take criticism is BAD. Therefore if you don’t like HOW someone gives criticism, you’re an oversensitive crybaby who hates criticism as a whole. Trying to say “this isn’t criticism, it’s just bullying” neglects the fact that the ones doing the bullying are *labeling it criticism.* Like, I think the real solution to this is to stop letting people use criticism as a shield for being an asshole. It doesn’t matter that Croaket’s eye placement is out of whack and anatomically wrong, that doesn’t justify being cruel to them. It doesn’t matter if someone’s art actually is overpriced, that doesn’t justify stealing their art against their explicit wishes. It doesn’t matter if someone deserves criticism, that does not mean they deserve to be dogpiled and bullied.
It’s getting even worse bc they make the beginner artist the villain, accusing them of “homophobia, transphobia and racism” and they are always saying “we’re just calling out a racist” and they never have evidence. These people are pure evil!
12:30 I actually experience this on TikTok, I made some cute duck drawings, and it blew up. Everyone was wanting me to sell prints so I did. I made the announcement that they were gonna be $30. Because the cost of shipping and prints. I was flooded with hate comments. “ it’s not worth $30.” “ I can do it myself.” The most common one. “ I can just screenshot it.”
I hate I when people complain about prices for art made by a one person team or a small business. Especially if the artist hasn’t set up a business prior to their art getting attention. Like not everyone has the savings to just make a business overnight. Plus the cost might be because they’re doing the job of an entire staff team. They don’t have managers to sort out deadlines, secretaries to record orders, workers to print stuff for them, drivers to pick up supplies or drop off orders. An artist is not a corporation. If the price is too big for you, it’s not for you.
that video of the person "fixing" the artists oc's cus ""pro shipper art style"" never fails to piss me off. nobody can even decide on what a """pro shipper art style""" actually is!! i hate art fixers man...
same 😖 I imagine it could discourage some people from drawing in their own art style because they share whatever trait (like how eyes are drawn or body shapes, etc.) has been decided as "pro-shipper art style" of the week and they probably don't want to be potentially canceled or made fun of because they have that art style even if they aren't a proshipper :/ ngl the "nobody can even decide on what a """pro shipper art style""" actually is" reminds me of how I keep seeing different definitions of what a proshipper is and people can't decide what the right definition is like c'mon it can't be that hard to make a concrete definition to describe what a proshipper is 😭
@@cremdcream i spent like an hour trying to find out the definition and honestly? yeah every single one was different. it's cus every artists style is unique to them and even though there might be similarities, no one artist will ever have the exact same style. sure, you can copy a style to the point where the two are indistinguishable, but by the time ur done doing that the other artist will have already improved from that style. cus style evolves with the artist. case in point, the "cal arts" art style where in which there were defo some similarities but the styles were all still different (and some of them were from ppl who didn't even attend cal arts 💀) (lol) there is no such thing as an "insert name here" art style XD
If you're getting harassed for your art online, just remember that they do it to absolutely everyone & are not soloing you out. & it's never limited to art. & they are not afraid to criticize other within earshot or to their faces. These same people will criticize how people dress, how they wear their hair, what they watch on TV, music taste, what they eat for dinner, the car they drive, weight. Bullying is a natural high. The reaction they get from others releases dopamine in the brain, so they become addicted to being arseholes to get high on hormones. The comradery from like-minded hormone addicts encourages them to continue this negative behavior. These people tend to have parents who basically ignore them & usually had few if any friends growing up, so they feel justified at lashing out at others.
I used to actually be one of those arseholes, & I had to go through years of therapy & self-discovery & distancing myself from equally toxic people in order to mellow out.
I'm happy for you! Self improvement is a wonderful thing, and I'm glad you were able to work to break out of that thought behavior! I wish that other people would be more self-aware of their actions. Perhaps things would be better in this community.
People got way too comfortable with leaving unnecessary, belittling comments without getting enough backlash for it. I will never understand the point of living out a bully fantasy, it's ridiculous. There's a huge difference between constructive criticism and blatant harassment, especially in the modern art "community".
One thing I never understand is why people assume everyone wants to hear their opinions without being asked. I have a style that I like and I draw for myself and don't currently plan to use my art for anything besides expressing myself and when I've shared my art with other people (because they usually ask to see) they give their opinion and advice that is something I didn't ask for. If I wanted any advice I would ask for it (And I do sometimes because I do enjoy improving.)
You're on the internet It can be argued no one asked for yours or anyon elses art yet here we are Saying "nobody asked" applies to yourself and the things you share as well.
@@vizor4067 well as i said it’s usually because people pressure me into sharing things and then give their opinions or “advice” when I didn’t even really want to share anyways.
what I've noticed and why I left Twitter is: There are big artists who take from less followed artists without retweeting or even following the original accounts. In order for an artist to grow , all they need to do is get their work in front of people. So this group of big artist who use the argument " I dont retweet other peoples work" are actively damaging and disrupting the natural process in which artists grow for selfish reasons and in some cases malicious reasons-- so their followers dont come to the conclusion that those bigger artists are taking from the smaller ones. Twitter is not a portfolio website ( It's not Artstation) the whole point of social media is to share , and as an artist its not ur "duty" to share others works but it shouldn't ever be off the table. It seems like social media has made art into a bad faith numbers game where artists are incentivized to take but not give notoriety .
I'm pretty sure i saw this happening recently. An artist held a DTIYS where he retweeted almost every art piece, except the ones blatantly superior to his, where he just slapped a like and called it a day. To these days, i still believe he did not want to give visibility to the best ones because he was afraid his patrons could go for someone else instead of him, everything was just too perfect: even after days, he retweeted everything, but there was no chance for the colored, good tasting ones. Only for those made with a pen and a paper from someone he could feel like he was looking up from, while the ones more capable than him, but with far less followers, had to take the L.
@@zeer7676 did u not read this part? because u just reiterated it "the whole point of social media is to share , and as an artist its *not* ur "duty" to share others works but it shouldn't ever be off the table. "
This is the reason I'll never get into the online art community, people who are on top steal without much consequence and the ones who call them out are the ones who get bullied. Also hello fellow DF enjoyer
I remembered when I was on Deviantart years ago, I had one troll that tried to 'critique' one of my pics. Luckily, I knew what this troll was doing as he was doing the same thing in order to hurt other artists so instead of expecting me to get upset, I just agreed that my art skills 'suck' and how do I 'improve'. He didn't expect that so he just doubles down and says to me 'figure it out' but I kept pressing on such as; is it the arms? The body? etc.? He just gets even more annoyed and tells me I should quit but I would tell him that if I quit, my art would remain 'shit'. He never answered back and just blocked me. XD The other deviants were impressed of how I handle it as they were harassed by him earlier as most of them were planning to quit drawing. But now thinking back, after watching your videos about those so called critiquers on TikTok, it reminded me of those types on Deviantart and I have no doubt that they carried on to other platforms to do the same. :/ I believed the real reason why they 'critique' on others artwork is that they don't want artists to get 'better', they want to make them feel bad to the point where they can quit so the jerks have no competition. If they really want to help others to improve, they would but they are not. They want them to stop drawing and not allow them to get better.
Yeah, it boils down still to insecurities. Just like in an actual workplace, instead of advising and motivating the younguns and newly recruits, some of the 'veterans' would either boast themselves (If that was me... blah blah) and/or impair or stagnate the youngsters' improvement by either not teaching them the ropes or 'criticizing' them despite the fact that they ARE freshmen that needs guidance. I got to experience these types of attitude, and really, their only main reason is due to insecurities that leads to jealousy when in fact we should nurture the beginners as they will continue the legacy of a good cause. In the end, it's just them being childish. What an irony. (Sorry that it turned into a speech lol)
@@07kamichamakarin I agree. It such a shame that they let their insecurities get in the way of others achieving things. (No worries, I don’t mind. :3 )
Boy am I glad I never downloaded tiktok. Yay for being a dinosaur 😂? I’m so sorry for the people getting hate and being discouraged…. I was on Deviantart since when you had to pay to be on it, and people were generally really kind and I made a lot of amazing artist friends. Where are these collaborative communities now? 🙃
lmaoooo that's so funny! yes! da was soo good back in like 2009 2010, the community was very friendly and i made friends with a lot of artists too. sad i rarely go there now because it doesn't even look like the same website anymore
@@MohammedAgbadi it was also the golden days of gaiaonline and lots of amazing artists being on there. Ahh how the art internet landscape has changed 🥲 I feel really sad that new artists don’t have as many (or any?) online opportunities to spread their wings, make mistakes to learn from without being attacked, and have friends to grow with. Or am I being a dinosaur again and there’s actually some hip young community I just don’t know about? I hope so…
The people who’re bullying new artists seem to be insecure of them improving and then when the newbies improve, the bullies get scared that they become better
The Tik Tok art community needs to stop. if you're thinking something negative just don't say it. unless they said it was satire or are open to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Constructive criticism does NOT mean that they are open to hate or bullying. And, it is not ok to make fun of something that is satire IF it's mocking another art style.
my little sister (7-10 years old) and i did an art trade, that’s where you draw each other ocs. She was really happy with how it came out, so she wanted me to post it to my tiktok. So i did. I posted it, put a sound over it etc., then we ate dinner. Later i checked the tiktok, expecting positive comments. The comment section was full with comments like “oh!” “side eye” “DELETE THIS 🔥🔥” there was even one that said “i hope your sister quits art forever.” … I deleted all the comments before i showed it to my sister. But it was too late, she had already checked on my video before i did. She saw those comments. stop bullying young artists. it can, and will, change them.
@@ghoulchan7525 people mostly don’t care who you are or what your story is. If they think something is bad they will just trash on it because they find it fun….
I don't know if it's just me, or if I have been getting more followers, but as of late, I keep getting negative comments more when I post my art on TikTok. Granted, it's not a lot, but it's more than what I am used to. I feel like the art community has been more negative lately for me, and it's made me not want to post anymore. from comments telling me I drew a character weirdly, (despite it being in my 'art style') or that I should practice anatomy when it's something I've finally been doing better at in the last few years. random people gave me 'helpful' advice when I never asked for it, and every time it's not even helpful advice!!! heck, 99% of the time is from people who have a private account or are beginner artists who feel the need to 'help' for some odd reason. Now I feel a lot more self-conscience, feeling like I need to 'fix' how I draw. I have been struggling to even find an art style and I am slowly figuring it out, but now I keep thinking it's dumb or needs to change. And whenever I post something I am proud of, that rare small, negative comment really hits me, and sometimes I start shaking out of anger and frustration. I am aware it's the internet, and posting my art will get those types of comments, and it can't be helped, but I just feel that the art community has been way more toxic, not just to me, but tons of others as well.
I’ve noticed this as well. Personally I think it’s because of more kids going online and taking their bullying online. I’ve seen artists get targeted by people who go to their irl school more than a handful of times. It’s gotten really bad…
This is totally pre-teen to teen behavior dude. I dont know any respectable adults who would act this way online, and if they ARE adults, they’re not respectable ones anyway. I really think the internet has done significant damage to the way kids socialize. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the boomers had a point, kids gotta stop being on their electronics so much and go touch grass. They NEED to learn healthy socialization and have better enrichment than the fucking internet, real life doesnt work the way online does and they just dont know that anymore :/
i have a friend that’s a really popular artist in the art community. i’ve always been insecure about my art so i rarely shared it to people. when i finally got the courage to do so, he pulled me into a vc, proceeded to point out every single mistake i made and started to paint over it to correct me. i cried. i was so embarrassed when he thought it was so funny. i haven’t drawn ever since :///
you should try again. even if it's just for fun and yourself. what your friend did was very rude of them. they should have only done the paint over if they got your permission to do so.
I can see how this is very rude and saddening, he should’ve asked for permission first. But if you want to become good, directly learning from a better artist, and having him point out all the mistakes is actually one of the most efficient ways to learn. Many people pay hundreds to thousands of dollars to have bigger artists deconstruct their work and point out and show how you can fix all the mistakes. It’s highly desirable for artists pushing to become better, to have a better artist a their fingertips to help them. I know a guy that got accepted into a 3D illustration company. He was garbage at it, but his boss told him, if you want to learn, I’ll give you 6-12 months to come and work here. He took it up, and got absolutely shredded to pieces by his coworkers, but he took the harsh criticism and became better at an insanely fast pace, because he constantly had talented people next to him ready to point out all the mistakes, and then proceeded to fix them and learn. Learning by the side of talented people is genuinely better than learning at school Now I don’t the details on your situation, it could be a lot worse that what it looks like reading your comment. If so I’m sorry. But if your friend wasn’t trying to deliberately bully you, there’s a high chance they just wanted to help in their own way.
Popularity makes people d#cks. Draw for yourself. He just wants to get views for doing such stuffs I see most popular artists go for clout chasing (not kooleen)or might have problematic fetishes to draw incest or child p*rn Draw for fun and relax i draw because i love to play with colours. And also break friendships with backstabbing artists who mock yoy from behind. Trust me you will be fine don't trust someone too blindly
@@oh-noe maybe he was indeed trying to help me and offer constructive criticism. but saying stuff like “how do you not know this??” or “why does it look like 💀💀” is not how you should go about it. it belittles the other, and makes them feel stupid (ik this because that’s how it made me feel). i have seen improvement because of his comments, but honestly it was doing more harm than good because i just quit all together. moreover, i specifically asked him not to comment about my artworks, because they were vent pieces. there’s a clear difference between constructive criticism and offering help, and just insulting the other person’s art. i’d like to clarify that i strongly support the action of lending out a hand and being honest for the greater performance of another. and i totally get your point though, considering that you weren’t there when it happened. thank you for your comment!!
@@ghoulchan7525 just like how the other user pointed out, he might have had good intentions. i will not deny that he did have some good pointers. however, it did really run me over and i don’t think i have the willpower to pick up a pen again. it’s not just cause of this, but also other factors in my current life. if i ever do, i’ll be sure to remember your comment of support. (kindly excuse my grammar or spelling errors i have made, english isn’t my first language ^^)
I've lierally had someone try to claim I was stealing their art, when THEY stole MINE (and I was the one with the receipts to backup the theft), it was so frustrating and made me stop posting art for a few years, as well as take down all those accounts
I feel like even if you posted the most perfect, photo-realistic, perfectly lighted, perfectly shaded, angelic, superhumanly good art on tiktok, someone would get all mad over some tiny detail in it
Just yesterday I saw a professional artist get harassed for painting an Indigenous American man that he was literally commissioned to paint by an Indigenous organization. The painting was perfect and hyperrealistic but the artist was white so he was told he was “a colonizer profiting off a group of people his ancestors committed genocide against“. The artist was middle aged and mentally healthy so he didn’t care and responded respectfully, but if that happened to me I’d actually kms 💀. This was Instagram reels which is basically tiktok but slightly less bad
These bullies really catches my attention... It's fascinating how art is such a subjective subject, yet the art bullies and fixers manage to consistently make the art (even from super beginners) they 'fix' OBJECTIVELY worse. It's a special talent in itself.
I miss when artists used to say all art was beautiful. And it upsets me when you see a very talented, experienced, artist making fun of a beginner because of bad drawing like they weren't a beginner before too? I'm never gonna post my art even though I've been drawing for five years, I'm not scared of being made fun of, I'm scared of a beginner trying my art style, posting it, and then getting made fun of if I did post my art. I agree with this video so much I'm glad someone finally said it!!!
Looking at the hate beginner artists face these days, it's so disheartening. Every artist has to start somewhere; we aren't experts in anatomy or color choices right from the get-go. With the right support, guidance and encouragement, they can soar and improve! Empathy and understanding goes so much further than toxicity
You know ive been trying to get back into drawing and it pains me and unmotivates me everytime someone just craps on my art for no reason and it makes me not want to draw anymore or just not show it to anyone anymore
It's just saddening to see that instead of being the mature people they are, they let their insecurities seep out and bully the younguns. Setting that aside, I really am fascinated by your artstyle. The doubling lines on the lineart is so unique to me.
even if I don't like some art style, it's non of my damn f*cking buisness to 'fix' it. Like, that is so f*cking rude. their parents must be so dissappointed of them smh.
I'm working on my own manga, I'm just going to say this. People are jealous of you, they cant draw or they are to scared to show, they bully other artists to make themselves feel better.
I just started posting more on my tiktok account and luckily I did not experience any hate, at least not yet. I was really not confident in posting my art, because I always tought I am not good enough to put my art out there. And was scared that I get torn apart by the art critics and trolls. But as I started posting again last year on instagram I engaged with such a wholesome community and everyone is cheering for each other, which gave me the confidence to expand my art to tiktok and YT.. This is my art journey and even if someone hates on it, there are plenty of others who like it and I am the happiest when I make even one single person happy with my art. Or make them feel something. I realised that haters are everywhere and they dont even care what you do, which hobby it may be or which type of content you make. These people will have a negative comment about everything!! This isn't about you, it's about themselfes.. and other artists who make fun of beginners are the scummiest of them all.
5:10 No offense but honestly, not even age can excuse this terrible behavior. Back then in my whole teenage years, I thought the common rule of "Don't like, don't read" or in this case don't interact, was a common rule. A rule I still follow today. Sad to see that it has been forgotten to the point harassment over something you don't like is common. I guess most of the blame can be placed on adults who spread the "harass over anything you don't like" mindset but lets be fr, its common sense that harassment is never the good option, regardless of how old you are.
Back when I started posting my art as a teenager around 2006-2007, overly mean comments were pretty much a given. The first art sharing site I joined back then was a Polish one (I'm Polish), which made it even worse, since people from my country are imo so much worse to others online for some reason, compared to English-speaking part of the internet. Anyway, my drawings were so sh*t on that it made me stop drawing for over a year and it took a lot to get back to it. Over the following years, I've noticed that the general behaviour in art communities had been getting more positive and kinder (even on that Polish website), and it's pretty upsetting that it's circling back to the mean side again. Seriously, been there, seen that, why again?
Instagram has the opposite problem. The artists are wholesome and help each other. However, the algorithm IT'S SELF hates artists. Shadow banning and post suppression is rampant. I've experienced this myself and have given up trying to fight it. I just accept that my art probably won't get traction because of a flawed algorithm.

Oh my god this is exactly why I’m trying to spend less time on tiktok. It’s the only social media platform I’ve been on where the comments are consistently just bullying the person who made the video for no reason. Like, you get some of that on other platforms too, but tiktok it’s like half the videos. People are disgusting on there
At this point, insta is far better, when I branched out my new style, people were supportive and were waiting to see what I can utilize my new style and what expressive things I can do with it (body languages, facial expressions, etc.), I feel like if I post my art on tiktok, people would either remove the afro and change it to something that damages my character's trait when the afro is their hair style and it's what makes them what they art, or changing their clothing to something bland and no details that distinguishes each other so strongly I get it, tiktok is mostly kids, but man, that doesn't excuse bullying talented and passionate artist :/
@Cyrus they really are, people on insta is way better the tiktok/twitter, yeah, instas algorithm sucks butt, but it's no worse them twitter, like, I just wanna appreciate OCs but instead get NFT scams And also, twotter is just a very huge cesspit, I remember getting called a P word out of no where with no rhymes or reason when I just wanna make art, screw the people on Twitter and screw twitter itself, it does have decent people but man, it's such a worthless platform Insta all the way lol
The way I’ve used every social media with an art community. Deviant art, Instagram, Pinterest, tumblr, RUclips, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and never in all of my 10+ years of doing art have I received the level of absolute disgusting hate that occurs on Tiktok. I have also never had to take a mental health social media break before, ever. And yet, I’ve had to take two breaks from Tiktok. There’s always a lot of ‘you put it out there, so what do you expect’ and ‘well, don’t post then’ and a lot of blaming rather than asking why it should fall on me to put up with hate, to distance myself, to change my account or private it, to avoid social media - why is it down to me to try to avoid harassment instead of on them. I dread to think how the me from 5-6 years ago would have dealt, suffice to say I would not have been able to. Luckily for them, I’m becoming desensitised to harassment, and my love for creating ultimately wins out over their hate.
hey thank you so much for doing subtitles. most people dont do them and sometimes i want captions because it makes me understand the video more. i dont have any hearing problems but i would just prefer captions on a movie, video, whatever. thank you and also your art is beautiful! also thanks for being quiet and having a nice tone you are an amazing artist and influencer, keep doing what you want and it sucks that the art community is so bad nowadays. nobody should ever have their art judge unless they like it or give permission.
I actually had bad experiences with tiktok myself, to keep it short people were just straight up bullying my artwork, even going as far as saying for me to harm myself. This wasn't that long ago either, mind you. It was early 2022 Thankfully I kept posting and as my art improved I started getting really nice and positive comments. It's just saddening how hurtful people can be, I'm so glad I'm seeing more and more people talking about this. I hope that one day the tiktok art community will change, and nobody else will need to go through this horrid treatment. For everyone scared of posting your art due to this, I understand, but please. Do what you love and post it if you so very wish, people may be hurtful but best you can do is to block them (and or report them) and focus on the people who love your art and are giving you actual helpful criticism
I actually left tiktok because of how damn toxic people were acting. I didn't get big enough to receive more than a couple hateful comments but still. And this is coming from someone who has been on twitter and also was harassed over my art for 6 months on DA, told anyone who said my art looked good should go to hell for lying on Amino, and more, on other platforms. Yep. Tiktok was THAT BAD. Also the amount of people cancelling artists over things like oh you drew a character that's not your race etc etc. wtf. I hate kids
Oh my goodness 1y ago, I remember posting a video one TikTok nd one of the drawings had a drawing of a side profile and I remember waking up with my phone blowing up from notifications, being extremely confused I checked the notifications from TikTok and everyone was making fun of that drawing of the side profile. I was hurt, and confused. Hurt because everyone was so brutal about it, confused because I literally had no idea on what was so bad about the drawing. I ignored the hate that I was getting and didn’t delete it because I didn’t want to seem like I was being hurt as much as I was. Later in the day I got a really nice cmnt that pointed out what was actually wrong with the drawing, it was that the face itself was very long and the distance between the eye and the nose was huge. From that cmnt, I started to practice side profiles more. It was from that cmnt I got better. None of the people that made fun of me did anything with my improvement except that they hurt me. They made me feel horrible. Criticism, nice criticism, is always to answer. I promise making fun of someone will literally do nothing except for hurting them and make them loose motivated to draw.
I got my very first hate comment on TikTok. The comment was like “just some advice, never draw ever again”. My response to this was… “OMGGGGGG,your my very first hate comment.Thank you! You just made my day.I was wondering when I would get one.🥰 🥰” “ Now I want to draw more than before, sorry your comment backfired 😂” Bahahahahaaahhaahahahah. My moto is kill them with sarcasm 😂😂😂
The Art community online has gotten worse and worse over the years. People's egos are crazy and I don't think the obsession over fan art and anime style is helping. We don't foster any other art styles other than whatever is popular and we don't support people drawing their own characters, art and/or stories. I think we need to be supportive and not only support one or two styles and fan art. Also doesn't help that we're pushing artist to have to give more and more because originally pictures were enough now we have to make quirky videos and such just to get engagement. When initially wanted to be an artist back in 2008 or so NO ONE wanted to be an artist really. It was really rare but social media made it to where everyone is one now too which should be good but seems like it's making things worse. I've come to really dislike the online art community and it's made me not even want to be an artist anymore
when i was younger . I grew up in the Thai art group community and oh boy , they are toxic as hell . you see, I love love love to draw a big muscle guy with beard but when i post my art they just saying that it ugly or big muscle is disgusting and scary [just cause most people into pretty Japanese boy] there weren't any contractive criticism what so ever . so i just yet myself to tumblr and start posting my art there and try to learning English by myself . now i move myself to twitter after tumblr blew up incident . It been 10 years now and those community experience still leave me a bad taste in my mouth to these day . every time i think about Thai art community, i think of anxiety like im not good enough , im not belong here or everyone hates me , and i still heard from my friend that those group are full of kid and still problematic
Man I feel incredibly lucky that I've never went through that when I started posting online. I didn't even touch TikTok cause I hate it so much. My friend tried to get me to start posting there but I wasn't familiar with video format and I kept getting unwanted notifications so I deleted it. I feel bad for artists that get discouraged by these people. They don't realize how much of a hit to an artist's self esteem it is when receiving hate and unwanted "criticism".
I never downloaded TikTok bc of so many situations like this over various topic spectrums. Its like community doesn't exist anymore, people are really sad or angry and are taking it out on other individuals. I was always confident in my artwork until I started posting on social media. And then it started becoming less for me and more for my small audience. It was frustrating and discouraging and made me think that maybe my art was too different to gain what I felt I needed at the time was more exposure. There was more burnout and less creativity. I've recently gotten rid of everything from Facebook to IG and its like all my restraints and stress released at the same time and my creativity started flowing again naturally. One of the many purposes of art is for sharing and interaction with those who have different interpretations than others that can be discussed and debated respectfully. But all that goes out the window when critiques become judgement bc ppl forget that every artist comes from different aspects of life, so their art reflects this path. Upliftment is more powerful than discouragement so that is something I will continue to do for my fellow artist.
I had several of my old arts stolen and put on shirts on a website (other artists were also stolen) and I only found out through a follower of mine on tumblr!! I have no way to make the person stop, so I will never end up being able to stop this thief, but it pisses me off, frustrates me and leaves me feeling ripped off! it wasn't just me, the person stole several other artists to make money!
I started trying digital art, I’d say for about a year now, and I DEFINITELY need more practice/need to learn aloooot more. I even got my first “hate” comment on IG LMAOO I literally just laughed because what did y’all expect, I grew up mainly traditional art (good ol pencil and paper) I have NO EXPERIENCE WITH DIGI ART OFCOURSE ITS GONNA SUCK
As a 30 year old artist, I've been drawing for most of my life and even i know my art style needs impoving, i do have a tiktok that i stopped using and deleted some of my more cringy videos. A certain artist started a certain war and killed off a religion. I dont mind advice criticism not in a horrible way. My style is inspired by both the PPG and MLP FIM so basically lara faust and creig mcracken works. It took me a while to learn how to do digital art. Can draw some what realistic but just choose my cartoon style
I feel like fourms are just the superior way for artists to learn and grow. Going into a thread, you had a mindset of how to interact and what was expected. Like a thread if someone is new and wants tips or a thread for people to just post art and appreciate. It however was not a great way to sell art. I feel like the problem with Twitter is its just open to anyone and they just say what they want not considering what the artist is posting/looking for.
I'm honestly glad that I've deleted my Tiktok account a month ago. Not only that it became a huge toxic environment that's hurting my mental health, but is also extremely addictive as well. As a black artist myself (that's planning 4 different projects), I feel so bad for the young artists that had to deal with these judgemental people.
Yeah back when I started I was surrounded by the best people on deviantart and other places and when I needed criticism it was always helpful and never mean-spirited. It helped me thrive and continue to love doing art till this day 10+ years later
Off topic to the main point of this video but I'm SO HAPPY to hear you'll be doing more art tutorial and drawing centered videos :D I honestly missed those, glad to hear you'll be doing those again!
Your art is so good! Please don’t be afraid to post your art on other platforms if anyone try’s to make fun of you, you have a big enough team of followers to sand up for you! (Love your art I hope to draw like you one day!)
I barely critique nowadays because I'm very blunt; more often than not I like to tell the truth and not sugarcoat it. Not everyone works the same though, so that style of criticism can come off as insulting and bullying. That is not only for other people but also myself; I work with the motto "This is good, but it can be better," (insert Pedro Pascal meme). As such I also get slightly miffed when other artists I follow that are of a similar skill level; kinda just do whatever, they draw everyday but don't do more research on the specifics they might be bad at etc (I guess they're the "keep trying over and over until success" type of people.
Another thing I hate? When people "Take inspiration" from your art/ocs, without tell who inspired them. But I don't know whether tiktok or twitter is worse. Where any criticism, even safe and even to friends, automatically causes a huge flame of hate. Last year I lost many followers because of a comment under a friend's pic. And he also lost followers because he defended me. Art Community's peak.
Definitely have moments of, "not vibing with this art", but after those moments I let that thought go. I don't share it. Sometimes, I'll go out of my way to like or comment something positive because I have days where I feel like I draw like shit, but get a random mention of encouragement. Which helps. I am of the mind that it's so easy to discourage others, but that it can be equally as easy to lift up other artists. Art is subjective. It expresses and tells stories. There is rarely a thing such as bad art. What may make art bad is more about subject than ability.
I am an an artist and sometimes people make fun of the way I draw eyes, I draw eyes super big and lively since I learned from people such as samdoesarts and more. People often think I’m being immature or weird for just having my own style.
I am not a young artist, i just started drawing after like 15 years, i am 31, i dont post anything anywhere for advice because of the current state of community every social media platform from twitter to reddit is now cesspool where i see people who make gorgeous pieces get run over with hate, so i dont post because in addition of anxiety of "i will never catch up" i dont want to be blasted to millions by some tiktoker.
Literally just saw people telling a 14 yr old to kill themselves for pro shipping content. Like I don’t like pro ship stuff but I just blocked the kid so they stopped popping up on my feed, the art community is messed up
As an experienced artist even I sometimes feel scared to post my art. You made some excellent points in this video, people need to stop bullying artists regardless of their skill level!
It’s as if people who hate on artists with different styles want everyone to have the same art style atp. Most of the time I see supportive comments on artists with manga/anime/manhua/semi-realism art styles (not saying those styles are bad) and it’s crazy. It’s like scavenging for food after a flood just occurred just looking for an artist who doesn’t have those art styles listed. I just wanna see other artists with different art styles get support without getting their art stolen and “fixed” or hated on.
This is exactly why i don't post my art on TikTok, even if i want to get some reach and possibly more followers through my creativity i just don't see why i should put my mental health at risk just to get regocnition. DeviantART days were so much better, i used to always get critiques and encouragement from strangers.
i feel lucky my parents took em to the art museum a lot as a kid. while obviously there was a hell fo a lot of realisim there was also a decent amoutn of toher things which allows me to find the beauty in every style. for instance i love croaketts style..it was different very styliased an i got it. does that mean i dont like relaisim..no. i love several different water color artists some are mroe illustrated some are full relaisim. i can see an udnerstand the difference that one isnt better than the other.they are different..but all are beautiful. artists shoudl udnerstand this from a basic level
Yeah, I personally wouldn't put any art online unless I was already confident about it. (and I definitely wouldn't ask "what do you think?" unless I was confident about the answer too.) If I was learning I'd find something other the internet-at-large. Not tiktok, youtube shorts, or twitter where you're guaranteed to be crushed by at least one person. I'd try to find a group for learners, a place that takes it seriously and thoughtfully. The internet is cruel and randos don't know the difference (or don't care) between "critiquing" and "ripping apart".
I love watching your drawing process! Which program is that you're using? I like that pencil brush :D My art career started on Deviantart in the 2010's, and whilst it was tough for me as a beginner artist back then (hell, at one point if you used a reference to draw from it was considered 'tracing' and, as such, 'cheating at art') there was at least an equal amount of helpful artists - both beginners in my boat and long-time artists - to keep me motivated to learn and enjoy creating. I made close friends there and we built our skills together. I had hoped with time this stupid behaviour against beginners and artists in general would fade out, but it seems like modern internet has brought it back in full force and made it 100 times worse. It saddens me that there's nowhere 'mainstream' on the internet for artists to share and grow anymore. Remember: teach yourself and young people to not feed the trolls (they thrive on you making replies to their comments - deny them it and watch them fade away) and if you are feeling social & see an artist being overwhelmed by these kinds of comments, give them a like/fave and a positive comment or reblog/share their art if it's in your interest/fandom. Even if you aren't an artist & have no clue about arty stuff like anatomy, a simple "I like how you did x!" or even a "nice" goes a long way for any kind of creator be it artist, writer, etc. Engagement is what keeps a creator of any kind creating, especially positive and constructive feedback. Also reposting anything without credit and/or permission and art theft will never be okay.
Yep, I think I might just stick with instagram and youtube. I've never download Tiktok from the moment it was created, maybe it's because I was never really interested. Sure I was a little afraid of getting a lot of hate comments like you said, and there's a lot of chaos in there too, but I know there's some good people there. Will I download it? No, It's not because I'm scared, like I said I'm just not interested that's all. So be proud, you nailed it, Because you gave such joy and creativity through your arts, I say thank you. I just hope someday, I would become an artist just like you, and be proud of how far I've come. ❤
Hating on artists is easy, giving criticism is hard. This is because hating takes basically no brain power while constructive criticism takes some form of brain power, which is what haters don't have.
I recommend that you do a video about the popular artist Mausuya because they turned out to be problematic and their art made a huge impact on the art community since many people would take inspirartion from their art style.
This is mostly a comment towards accounts that re-post art piece or even accounts that sell art pieces that aren't theirs, but I feel like a lot of people don't always get how much these accounts can affect artists!! I remember posting a Helluva Boss Fanart (it's super old as well so I hate see it being sold lmao) but people started re-posting it and I even found it being sold on RedBubble. All of those re-posts and "shops" got so much more attention than the original, my own art piece. It's happened with other artists too and I've even seen some popular creators like re-post accounts instead of the original; not their fault entirely because even if the re-posts include credit, you have to hunt it down in the description still. Overall, great video!! 💛💛 I absolutely love it when you discuss topics about problems in the art community and even explain how in the past it was different. Wish it was more supportive than destructive nowadays.
Happens here on RUclips too, I posted a drawing I did that I was proud of and most of the comments were hate comments. Pretty sure none of the people who commented were artists so idk why they thought I'd care about their opinion lol.
Wait wut? Tik tok is an art community? since when? lol I thought it was a place, for edgy cringe short videos, i didn't even know an art community exist there, i doubt it's even relevant because i've never heard of it being a thing until now After watching this video, i'm thankful i don't even have a Tik tok account
each time i see a drawing of a young artist, i always comment positive stuff in case some stupid ass kids want to hate on them, at least they have a reminder that their art is really good
When i started drawing as a child in the early 2000s. I had internet and a smartphone at 16yo, so around 2010, starting at the beginning of Instagram. It was great. But I'll never survive in this art community as a teen. I already abandoned my IG, and I'm an adult. I'm just focusing on my contract. Social media are hell
About pricing art I got ONE advice recently saying: "if you don't feel at least a bit uncomfortable for how much you charge, then you are undercharging"
As someone who would be destroyed on tik tok if I has just started art, it's so sad to see beginner artist get discouraged because of bullying online. I try my best to watch a full video of a beginner artist and look through their older work because the best part of a beginner artist is that their art can improve so quickly and it's so nice to see

Some people also need to know that some adults can be beginner artists
it's amazing how people forget art can be learnt as a child and in old age as well.

Pixel artists also get a lot of hate! People shun us for using "outdated forms" and liking old stuff. God forbid we prefer old tech...

Exactly ⭐️
Yeah!
Trying to say “this isn’t criticism, it’s just bullying” neglects the fact that the ones doing the bullying are *labeling it criticism.*
Like, I think the real solution to this is to stop letting people use criticism as a shield for being an asshole.
Exactly. If their character isn't LGBTQ+, black and obese, they'll say the artist is homophobic, racist and fat phobic.
People need to stop making up lies about the innocent artist for doing beginner things.
Oh my god did someone at least bought one? Or did you cancel it altogether, better off that way….art is a luxury

I imagine it could discourage some people from drawing in their own art style because they share whatever trait (like how eyes are drawn or body shapes, etc.) has been decided as "pro-shipper art style" of the week and they probably don't want to be potentially canceled or made fun of because they have that art style even if they aren't a proshipper :/
ngl the "nobody can even decide on what a """pro shipper art style""" actually is" reminds me of how I keep seeing different definitions of what a proshipper is and people can't decide what the right definition is
like c'mon it can't be that hard to make a concrete definition to describe what a proshipper is 😭
@@cremdcream i spent like an hour trying to find out the definition and honestly? yeah every single one was different. it's cus every artists style is unique to them and even though there might be similarities, no one artist will ever have the exact same style. sure, you can copy a style to the point where the two are indistinguishable, but by the time ur done doing that the other artist will have already improved from that style. cus style evolves with the artist. case in point, the "cal arts" art style where in which there were defo some similarities but the styles were all still different (and some of them were from ppl who didn't even attend cal arts 💀) (lol)

This is the best comment I’ve ever seen relating to this topic and idk where to start
I never thought of it like this, wow!
People got way too comfortable with leaving unnecessary, belittling comments without getting enough backlash for it. I will never understand the point of living out a bully fantasy, it's ridiculous. There's a huge difference between constructive criticism and blatant harassment, especially in the modern art "community".
just because they aren't painting the mona lisa or some cookiecutter anime artstyle doesn't mean their art is bad smh. ART IS ART.
If I wanted any advice I would ask for it (And I do sometimes because I do enjoy improving.)

what I've noticed and why I left Twitter is:
There are big artists who take from less followed artists without retweeting or even following the original accounts.
You aren't entitled a retweet, post something that people like and your art will get retweeted by them.
@@zeer7676 did u not read this part? because u just reiterated it "the whole point of social media is to share , and as an artist its *not* ur "duty" to share others works but it shouldn't ever be off the table. "

@@vizor4067 Sorry but i don't understand what you mean. I'm pretty dumb so forgive me for asking

Not just TikTok, Instagram as well, there was a artist that made some Ninjago fanart and people started to mock her style
Alright, every time you have something negative to say about something your don't like keep your mouth shut then
my little sister (7-10 years old) and i did an art trade, that’s where you draw each other ocs. She saw those comments.
stop bullying young artists.
it can, and will, change them.
... they legit said that to a child's art. these people are so sad.
hope your little sister keeps drawing despite the negativity.
@@ghoulchan7525 she still draws (luckily) :)

I hate when people go “ Credit to the artist” and nothing else.
So glad I've never used tiktok
lmaooooo
Me too. Like I have a negative impression of TikTok before I use it, so I never download it
I don't know if it's just me, or if I have been getting more followers, but as of late, I keep getting negative comments more when I post my art on TikTok.
Learning by the side of talented people is genuinely better than learning at school
Now I don’t the details on your situation, it could be a lot worse that what it looks like reading your comment. If so I’m sorry. But if your friend wasn’t trying to deliberately bully you, there’s a high chance they just wanted to help in their own way.
Popularity makes people d#cks. Draw for yourself. He just wants to get views for doing such stuffs
I see most popular artists go for clout chasing (not kooleen)or might have problematic fetishes to draw incest or child p*rn
Draw for fun and relax i draw because i love to play with colours.
I’m glad TikTok wasn’t around when I was a younger artist… I would’ve stopped drawing a long time ago.
@@thebuilder5271 _what_
@bobthebuilder5271 i would laugh in hysteria. but if you don't draw poc you're also bad. you can't fucking win
Dont care about those people do what u like
It's just saddening to see that instead of being the mature people they are, they let their insecurities seep out and bully the younguns.
Nobody asked
I'm working on my own manga, I'm just going to say this. People are jealous of you, they cant draw or they are to scared to show,
they bully other artists to make themselves feel better.
7:40 this corporate style is called Alegria style, or Corporate Memphis.
You guys learnt something today
Man I haven't seen u draw in a hot minute but ur lines are a billion times better so cool to see always loved ur work man u got some skill
Thankyou so much!
Thank you I have the same problem as well. Posting a picture on insta doesn’t do as well as reels. Their algorithm has been messed up for a while now

I have only had a a couple people harass me on Instagram because they were religious and I draw trans people but those are easy to block lol. But for the most part it’s positive if you stay out of fandoms or politics. Unfortunately the algorithm wants you to post reels that open you up to the tiktok style toxicity though 😔
Oh my god this is exactly why I’m trying to spend less time on tiktok. It’s the only social media platform I’ve been on where the comments are consistently just bullying the person who made the video for no reason. Like, you get some of that on other platforms too, but tiktok it’s like half the videos. People are disgusting on there
At this point, insta is far better, when I branched out my new style, people were supportive and were waiting to see what I can utilize my new style and what expressive things I can do with it (body languages, facial expressions, etc.), I feel like if I post my art on tiktok, people would either remove the afro and change it to something that damages my character's trait when the afro is their hair style and it's what makes them what they art, or changing their clothing to something bland and no details that distinguishes each other so strongly
I get it, tiktok is mostly kids, but man, that doesn't excuse bullying talented and passionate artist :/
People on the instagram are the sweetest persons ever they give you tips and they are nice to you unlike Tik Tok.
yeah I have to agree, Insta is probably the best platform for artists right now (which is kinda sad, but the alternatives are way worse)....
@@neu_dae I do agree but their algorithm suckssss that’s why I’m on tiktok🥲😭
@Cyrus they really are, people on insta is way better the tiktok/twitter, yeah, instas algorithm sucks butt, but it's no worse them twitter, like, I just wanna appreciate OCs but instead get NFT scams

Insta all the way lol
It was early 2022
Thankfully I kept posting and as my art improved I started getting really nice and positive comments.
Also the amount of people cancelling artists over things like oh you drew a character that's not your race etc etc. wtf. I hate kids
I didnt even post on tiktok when I had it but seeing how people acted on there made me suicidal 💀. Especially fandom or activism spaces Jesus Christ
You just made my day.I was wondering when I would get one.🥰 🥰”
“ Now I want to draw more than before, sorry your comment backfired 😂”
Bahahahahaaahhaahahahah.
Reminds me when grown adults were making fun of kids on deviantart.
Art Community's peak.
my ex friend took such heavy inspiration on my characters that they practically made a carbon copy with only a couple things changed 😭
Every day I am more grateful that I never downloaded TikTok, especially since I'm still a little insecure with my drawings
I never downloaded TikTok either, but not for that reason. That network has too many hypocrites, trolls and idiots in it for its own good.

Just dont read the angry comments dude
I love watching your drawing process! Which program is that you're using? I like that pencil brush :D
My art career started on Deviantart in the 2010's, and whilst it was tough for me as a beginner artist back then (hell, at one point if you used a reference to draw from it was considered 'tracing' and, as such, 'cheating at art') there was at least an equal amount of helpful artists - both beginners in my boat and long-time artists - to keep me motivated to learn and enjoy creating.
He uses Clip studio paint EX and the brush is lighter pencil (im not sure if its from the brush library)
No,
It's not because I'm scared, like I said I'm just not interested that's all.
So be proud, you nailed it,
Because you gave such joy and creativity through your arts, I say thank you.
I just hope someday, I would become an artist just like you, and be proud of how far I've come. ❤
Hating on artists is easy, giving criticism is hard. This is because hating takes basically no brain power while constructive criticism takes some form of brain power, which is what haters don't have.
Your art style is so satisfying to look at 🤩
If you think someone isn’t good at art, leave them constructive criticism like it’s not that hard people. 💀
or leave them alone tbh
I recommend that you do a video about the popular artist Mausuya because they turned out to be problematic and their art made a huge impact on the art community since many people would take inspirartion from their art style.
Hello all fellow artist I just wanna say... I love you all keep on doing what you love stay positive!
Why don't you just have your second channel under the tab channels and note it as your second channel...?
ooooo lemme try that
Happens here on RUclips too, I posted a drawing I did that I was proud of and most of the comments were hate comments. Pretty sure none of the people who commented were artists so idk why they thought I'd care about their opinion lol.
Wait wut? Tik tok is an art community? since when? lol
I thought it was a place, for edgy cringe short videos, i didn't even know an art community exist there, i doubt it's even relevant because i've never heard of it being a thing until now
After watching this video, i'm thankful i don't even have a Tik tok account
each time i see a drawing of a young artist, i always comment positive stuff in case some stupid ass kids want to hate on them, at least they have a reminder that their art is really good
Looks like the link to your 2nd channel isn’t working. Can you tell me the name of the channel so I can sub to it?
i fixed the link. check again
@@MohammedAgbadi It works now! Thank you so much!
Well, if you dont have tiktok, you dont have problem 🤷. This app is not neccesary in our life like most of them.
I've seen way more negatives about that app than anything good tbh
actually...now that you mention...
All drama aside, I'm glad we now getting more art from Mohammed and channel we can enjoy it on!
About pricing art I got ONE advice recently saying:
"if you don't feel at least a bit uncomfortable for how much you charge, then you are undercharging"
im french "artist" i just saw your channel and like it so much ! you speak facts
I don't Tiktok and nor should you.
definitely
As someone who would be destroyed on tik tok if I has just started art, it's so sad to see beginner artist get discouraged because of bullying online. I try my best to watch a full video of a beginner artist and look through their older work because the best part of a beginner artist is that their art can improve so quickly and it's so nice to see
