Converting a vector file to a shape layer will only retain the fill color of the shape if there are no gradients or effects applied to the layer. Files need to be prepared correctly in the Illustrator beforehand. You can position anchors to the desired position. Use ‘y’ on keyboard and move them around. Not sure if it’s possible to make them centered from the get-go.

You can also use ctrl + alt + home (cmd + option + home if on mac) to center them automatically on the layer.
