Thoughts and feelings?? I’m a fan! More options the better as far as I’m concerned! Would you buy this? What would you buy instead?
From Carmel, Indiana, USA, I have really enjoyed your summary of this lens. But mostly, I've enjoyed viewing a little of your work. The band photos, from the direction you chose, we're exceptional. From a 74 year old, retired photographer, who only enjoys his work now for strictly its fun, keep up the good work! At your age, you have a long time to become better, and better, and better! And I'm certain you will do just that.
I just checked the prices here in Australia and the Lumix 9mm f1.7 can be had for $671AU compared to $660AU for the Meike 8mm f2.8. I love Meike lenses but the price is a bit steep compared to the native Lumix. Admittedly the Lumix - Leica is on special, but even at full price it's only $749AU, so for an extra $90AU you're getting autofocus and in camera corrections / lens profile.
Great review! 😃 You've stepped up your game even more with this one, in my humble opinion. Please keep it up!
Paul 😎
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and the clarity you have, I hope your knowledge multiplies.
Yeah I've subscribed to your channel and have been watching you for quite some time, particularly when you've looked at wider angle options. Since I got the bmpcc4k and the pan-leica 14-60mm zoom I've been wondering how I ever managed with the gear I used to use. Been in and out of hospital for a couple of years but am now recovering and looking forward too uploading a first edit of stuff I've managed to shoot with the new rig. Love your vids and your attitude. Please keep up the good work. Cheers, Phil.
Just got myself a Laowa 7.5 mm F2 A last month and I'm very happy with it. For fisheye, the Meike MK 6,5 mm f/2.0 is a great lens, too.
Thanks for sharing!😆
Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for the review.
Would love to see your opinion/review of the meike 50mm f0.95.
I have that same 7Artisans wide lens.
What about lumix 7-14mm in image quality? Although it has different F stop..
"but we don't buy lenses because it looks cool"
*quietly hides in the corner
😂
It would have been nice to see your gimbal setups for this lens and how you manage to focus in difficult situations like a live concert.
I have a dedicated gimbal review coming very soon so didn’t want to step on that video’s toes too much! It should be week after next on the channel.
as for focus, I put the lens to the 2m setting, that seemed to be the sweet spot.
infinity focus got the audience in focus and the performers slightly out as I was quite close to them.
With that set, it was just a matter of trying to maintain a similar distance to the performers as I moved 😊
In an ideal world stopping down slightly would have made focus much easier but it was so dark I was stuck with f2.8.
There are also the alternatives from Laowa viz the 7.5mm f2.0 rectilinear which weighs nowt but is manual focus and manual iris or
The 10mm f2.0 which is about the same size and weight but has electronic connections allowing exif data to be recorded and the iris is controlled in camera.
I’ve coveted that 7.5 Laowa for ages. There’s always so many great astro photos on the Facebook group and every last one is with that lens! Very good choice for wide angle mft 👍
@@MicroFourNerds I bought it when it was first released but I have hardly used it!
So if you want to borrow it for a couple of months then message me on Instagram 🤷
You forgot the Olympus native mounts. I have the 9mm body cap lens, also fun. Also consider the Olympus 8mm F/1.8 Pro.
I have that body cap too it’s not too bad! That 8mum oly I owned for a hot minute - there’s a review many moons back on my channel… SO sharp. Absolutely incredible piece of glass
I wonder more how it compares to the 7Artisans 7.5mm, that's my go to lens in this category.
With this being rectilinear rather than fisheye I’d say the edges are much cleaner than the 7artisans, but I really need a good clear sky to give them a proper comparison!
Hi great review as always. You certainly whetted my interest.
Just checking the price here in Spain. It's coming in at just under 400 euros delivered, how does this compare to UK prices?
The Lumix 9mm is 480 euros.
Given the small price difference, which would you go for? I'm shooting a G9.
If it’s that close price-wise where you are, I think the 9mm lumix might be my choice! It is lighter and has auto focus. They’re both great optically but I did miss auto focus from time to time when testing this Meike lens!

Thanks so much for your reply. Having more options is always great!
I think the Leica is a better bet, plus the added weather sealing.....not much in the way if rain here, but plenty of dust.
Keep up the good work!
Have you had the chance to play with a Laowa 7.5mm to compare it against the Meike 8mm?
I have the Laowa lens and solve all my focusing problems by duct taping the focus ring to one position so I don't move it by mistake. If the Panasonic 9mm had been available a couple of years ago when I bought my lens, I'd probably have gone for that as it has auto focus and I had not played with manual lenses since art college. I was scared of manual focusing but with such wide lens I soon got over that fear.
I'd love to see any episodes that you create doing astro photography with your GH6, and how you set it up. I had terrible results with noise on my GH5 to the point that it spoiled my desire to do night time photography.
The Laowa is one that I’ve been after for ages but the price has put me off… and then the lumix 9mm came out and I thought I may as well get that for the price… and then there were so many stock issues so I’ve ended up with none haha
The next clear night I’m definitely taking this Meike 8mm out for a spin. I reckon it’ll be really good as it’s so sharp even at 2.8 🤞 just need the clouds to go away!
@@MicroFourNerds If you are in a charitable mood, I really would appreciate your advice on where I went wrong with so much noise using my GH5 and Laowa lens.
Its on Flickr and the image is called "1 How to eliminate hot pixels?". Funnily enough there are no other images on Flickr with that title. 🤣
I wish there were a cheap, non-fisheye MFT ultrawide. The cheapest 12mms for APS-C are less then half the price of the cheapest 9mms for MFT. Maybe they're just tricky to make for such a small sensor? Almost wish I had kept my old DSLR just for the occasional wide angles shots.
It should not be a problem to make wide lenses for m4/3 sensors. They do it for the phones with tiny sensors. But there is an explanation for this.
Panasonic and Olympus prefere to make PRO zoom lenses which are expensive. The third party manufacturers except Laowa, will only make APS-C fix lenses with m4/3 mount, so those lenses will not be really wide when are mounted on m4/3 cameras. Practically the only manufacturer which makes fix lenses designed for m4/3 sensors is Laowa, that's why we have a limited offert for fix m4/3 lenses in the 6...9mm focal range. The other manufacturers will provide fix lenses with 10...12mm focal lengths designed for APS-C format.
Hello! I'm new to absorbing information about fisheye lenses. How do you manage to have your images not circular like I've seen with other reviews of this lens. Your images are wide fish eyed but others are circular in output. Does it have to do with the aperture?
Hi! To get a circular image you need a much wider lens, like a 4mm lens. This lens is wide but still fills the whole sensor
@MicroFourNerds Ah got it! I actually prefer this than the circular ones. Thank you so much!
@@_cometvintage1978 me too ☺️ no problem!
👍🙏
Do you think it'd possible to cover and mariage with Meike and Lumix G7 ?
That combo isn’t ideal for a full wedding, but would be good for maybe couple portraits and some photos through a day as a guest. The Meike is manual focus lenses so you can often miss things when trying to get focus, and the g7 isn’t stabilised in camera so you’d have to keep your shutter speed quite high. For causal portraits etc it would be fine 😊
Have you looked at the SLR Magic 8mm?
That one had totally slipped my radar I’ll give it a Google!
for astrophotography. fisheye lens is needed, to avoid distortion. rectilinear lens should not be used.
An interesting option, but...too heavy in m4/3 world. I would rather buy Laowa 7.5mm F/2.0 or Panasonic 9mm F/1.7 which are lighter and faster.
In fact I am very happy with Samyang 7.5mm F/3.5 fish eye lens. It is a fisheye, but very wide, very creative.
Looks like this lens isn't priced correctly by Meike, with just £50 extra and you can get the Leica 9mm f1.7
I bit the bullet (it hurts my wallet) and got the Panasonic 8-18 instead of other third-party options. All because it has AF, and zoom.
Nice.. but at £400... Will stick to my 7artisans 7.5mm F2.8 and defish..👍
Very fair. The 7artisans is a beaut!
using it on my old trusty GH4!! I would rather go for the Laowa at this price range, and you can put filters on it too!!
That's my go to lens in this range. EM-1 MK2 with the 7.5mm
Wait!! Whaaaaat?? We DON'T buy lenses because the look cool??? 😳 When did THAT start?? LOL
