Hey kramer. My name is geoff and I live in Southern Illinois. I've made walking sticks, front door plaques, etc for many years, however , about 2 years ago I branched out into bow building. Recently I "invented" a "bow backing"/finish: I mix spray spar urethane with clear gorilla glue In a disposable cup and apply to back of self bows made from harvested staves; the benefit is, it dries clear so as to show the natural beauty of the wood. It also tends to be very thick and has a decent amount of integrity when dry. Obviously, it is not full proof, and I have had a very nice red bud bow that treated with it break (it should be mentioned that there were fatal flaws in that red bud stave ). Also, It would more practical to merely back your self bow with clear bear paw. On the other hand, I've built a maple recurve/deflex with this treatment and it has survived well. At best it is most likely a novelty. But I would be appreciative if you might include it on any future episodes of will it bow? Thank you

As a wood shop Forman for a dozen years, I think you could use a couple of suggestions: zero clearance inserts for both the bandsaw and the tablesaw. Absolutely keeps fingers attached to the required places. Use your dust collection system for the sander, bandsaw, and tablesaw. Anything that produces dust is your enemy, especially with exotic woods. Thousands of hours of personal operation allows me to spread my experience, not trying to belittle you, but just make your later years more healthy. I would make a collection cuff for the out feed drum of the belt sander, it may not get 100% of the dust, but most of it. Zero clearance inserts are easy, epoxy offcuts from hardwood with occasional cross grain for strength. Table saw the same. Build your self a study table that places the top of your saw at belt height, with an outfeed table the length of the longest length that you plan on cutting. When you can afford one, a ceiling mounted air filter is a great idea, or you can build one for very little expense. If you take a little time and incorporate these suggestions you will find that your hobby / business will be both easier and you won’t be blowing colored funk out of your nasal passages. Been there, done that and the cheapskates I worked for didn’t even provide the T-shirts. Good luck, and if you are interested in more shop updates, feel free to ask an old fart who has been around the patch a couple of times 😅

Just a heads up as a fellow woodworker here. I don't do bows, but I work a lot with table saws. It's best if you don't wear gloves while working on a table saw. If the blade catches the glove it could pull your whole hand in to it. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but having bare hands would be better in case of an accident. Same goes for long sleeve shirts. Great content though. Relaxing to watch a bow being made.

Kramer, please wear a mask when fiberglass dust is airborne. That stuff will make your life miserable if you inhale it. I’ve made a bunch of fiberglass/laminate bows from the old Bingham kits. It is fun, but there are serious health risks. Great job on your own tapered lams.

I noticed at the 5:31 mark your appear to be measuring the gap between the blade and fence. THis can be done with the other end of the calipers. You set the edge of the caliper on the blade and the part that sticks out as you expand the calipers is also a measuring tool. Just in case you didnt know. good videos by the way

Speaking of horseback archers from the Eurasian steppe . . . Scythians! My family has predominantly Scythian blood and I found a man who still makes bows in their tradition with a nice modern touch. Part of that modern touch is his bows are "take down", but not too he common style like you regularly make. Instead of having a riser and two limbs you only have two limbs whereas one in the Middle where you grip it slides into the other and then after being pushed all the way in so that it's flush you wrap it with leather and lace it tight. Most people just shoot them like that but after watching your channel so much I really like the idea of an arrow shelf. Do You know of anybody who makes one that can be like tied or fastined onto the bow somehow? I can see how it would be so easy to do like have a shelf built into the strip of leather that you tie around the middle after sliding the two limbs into each other. I hope I'm describing this in a way that makes sense to you. Anywho if you know of anybody that makes something like that please let me know how to get in touch with them

    • @paulgee6111

You can get a little shelf to stick or lash on from eBay or similar made out of various materials but it would be easy to make your own by carving a small scrap of wood.
