- Connecting to data in Tableau is very easy. In this video tutorial, you will be introduced to the process of connecting to different data sources in Tableau. Whether you have data stored in a CSV file, an Excel file, or a database. Tableau provides a seamless way to connect to your data and start creating meaningful visualisations and dashboards.
We will start with connecting to a CSV file. You'll learn how to navigate to the "Connect to Data" screen, select "Text File" as the data source type, and then choose the desired CSV file. You'll also see how to select options such as changing the default data type of columns and setting the first row as the header. Finally, we'll show you how to click "Connect" to establish a connection to the CSV file and start using the data in Tableau.
Next, we'll move on to connecting to an Excel file. The steps are similar to connecting to a CSV file, but instead of "Text File," you'll select "Microsoft Excel" as the data source type. You'll also see how to select options such as changing the default data type of columns and setting the first row as the header, and then click "Connect" to establish a connection to the Excel file.
Finally, we'll demonstrate how to connect to a database using Snowflake. You'll learn how to enter the necessary connection details, such as the Snowflake account name, username, password, and database/warehouse name, and then click "Sign In" to authenticate the connection. Once the connection is established, you'll see how to start creating visualisations and dashboards using the data from Snowflake.
By the end of this video, you will have a solid understanding of the process of connecting to different data sources in Tableau, and be well on your way to creating powerful visualisations and dashboards.

You're priceless! Many thanks...
This was very helpful. Do you have a video on how to compute for Average, Minimum, Maximum and Standard deviation from an Excel data? Thank you.
These are just functions in tableau, no need to compute them. Tableau does this for you. Look at any of my videos on functions to get an idea how ort just google, "Average, Minimum, Maximum and Standard deviation Tableau" and you should find many guides.
Hi, Tim. Just watched this after your 10-min intro to Tableau, and got pretty lost! Which of your videos do I need to watch to be able to understand this one?
very useful video
hi Tim! thx for your video, could you show the link to how to connect tableau and snowflake? And is it necessary for us to install it for data visualization?
i have a sepearte video on snowflake where we use Tableau. Just google Tableau Snowflake Tableautim and it should come up
Hi, i am getting an error while connecting tableau prep to Mysql saying that System error: An error occurred while communicating with MySQL
[MySQL][ODBC 8.2(w) Driver]Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) what to do give some solution plz.

Hi tim
How can you connect a folder of excel files (that you will update weekly) to Tableau?
Excel files are the worst. I would first have a data pipeline that checks all the excel files to make sure theyre the correct structre, column fields are correctly labelled and metadata correct. If one sheet in one file is incorrect that can break the entire pipeline. To do this I would start with Tableau prep or Altered or python if your familiar with that. Then once you're ready you can just bring all the file sin and union them accordingly but i wouldn't ever deliver this a solution to a client. Id start by moving the data into a csv, one file for each relevant data structure and connect to that.
@@TableauTim But if I have 100 + .cvs files and I will add new ones weekly, ¿Is it recommended to do it like that? On Power BI, for example, you can connect already to a folder (with excel files on it) and it updated automatically (considerating that every column is the same and the structure overall)
Hi, In public tableau don't we have the option to choose between extract and live?
On Public desktop edition yes on Public web version no. All web versions have to create an extract because your uploading your data to Tableau's cloud.
Any one please explain creating new connection vs new data source in tableau
A data source is a single piece of information or data model in your workbook that answers a set of problems. It can contain multiple connections to data sources. An example you might have a connection to excel, a connection to csv and a connection to database that you join or union into a single data source.
@@TableauTim thanks for the explanation 🙂
