Ohio isn't an attack sub, it doesn't need agressive advanced torps. It's main payload Trident-2 nukes and it's designation is strategic nuclear missile carrier. Missile attached torpedoes are not a new thing, they date back to Soviet Era... Although they never carried heavyweight torpedoes, their main objective was to sink a confirmed enemy submarine as quick and as undetected as possible.

I still wonder how they expect to hit anything with this; range is fine, but the ocean is BIG and if you don't know generally where the enemy is, you're just pissing in the wind and wasting shots. There's a reason the major navies never bothered with shore-based ASW weapons other than aircraft: because you need a sensor platform to actually FIND the flipping sub, and if you've ALREADY got something out there hunting the sub you might as well put ASW weapons on THAT because IT'S ALREADY THERE.
This "SMART" thing is the most ironically named waste of money ever. Guess the USAF isn't the only service that loves to waste money on shiny things.

I would suggest you to check IGMDP and IBMDP. Also IAC as well as ATV project. No info about programme for development of SSNs, but I'm sure, wo is underway. One area we are weak at is development of aircrafts, hopefully it changes by the end of this decade. A stronger India is in interest of whole world including the West and is crucial for protection & growth of democracy around the globe.

Close in weapon system (CIWS) is for anti air and anti surface warfare
Rbu-6000 is anti-submarine (more like depth charges and mortars had a baby)
For torpedoes- its actually a decoy system.... Decoy is sent into the water to confuse the torpedo and to deplete the torpedoes energy by making it go in different directions
@@golu28sh You are wrong on all counts.
1.) I never called RBU-6000 a conventional CIWS system. Indian ships have AK-630 for that role. I called RBU-6000 an "anti-torpedo CIWS".
2.) I know RBU-6000 was originally intended as an ASW weapon, but the ability to launch depth charges at 9 km is not enough to defeat submarines anymore. In fact, in most cases, enemy submarine would not be caught so close to your own ship. Which is why most other navies deploy stuff like VL-ASROC which deploys a light torpedo instead of a depth charge, and at more than twice the distance. (Although Indian Navy did not develop this capability and instead chose to carry Heavyweight Torpedoes on its ships for this job, but that is another point).
3.) But even if you can't use RBU to damage submarine hulls, you can still use it to destroy incoming torpedoes. Which is why even latest Indian Navy warships like the Visakhapatnam class destroyers and Nilgiri class frigates have them. Which is why I called RBU an "anti-torpedo CIWS".
4.) RBU-6000 is not a torpedo decoy system. Indian ships have a dedicated integrated system called Maareech ATDS for torpedo detection, identification and countermeasures. It deploys both towed and expendable decoys.

The missile will be on radar and the torpedo more then likely is giving of enough sound to be located by sonar.
Shooting it midair seems difficult.
