- I would always ask the question, why do we need a literal temple to have a literal kingdom? Because we do have a literal Kingdom at the end of the book of Revelation, and we don't have a temple. So I don't really see why we need one now. I would suggest to you that if a temple gets rebuilt today, and there is no temple at the end of the book of Revelation, that like something happens to that temple, that's in defiance of this famous temple passage in Ezekiel 40 to 48. But if you take the temple as the New Jerusalem, the body of Christ and the New Jerusalem, it is forever, it will have no end. Check it out!

@@TheWhyisthatso “week” means a heptad, a group of 7. In the same way dozen means a group of 12. 62 periods of 7 years occurred from Ataxerxes’ decree. The one remaining “week” is the last 7 years of this present age, also known as the Great Tribulation. John also uses the same phraseology in Revelation in describing the last seven years.
So to answer your question, yes, literal.
Jesus warned against the abomination of desolation from Daniel at the temple and said there will be great tribulation at that time. Paul said the man of sin will sit in the temple and declare himself God. Israel shall built temple, and I believe that will be the sign that the end is near.

Praying for you Dr. Heiser. My son who is now 28 and myself were very sick nearly died in 2008. Son had h-pylori bacteria and i food poisoning. they were frightening times. Our digestions shut down due to infections. We experienced complete healing. I am believing for your complete healing now.

Daniel 9 was already fulfilled and it has nothing to do with some anti christ. The greeks and romans destroyed the temple already. When the new temple is built it will never again be destroyed
The Jews don't see our bodies or their bodies as the Temple. So it would make sense for them to build a temple.

All of us are a part of this fallen world, it is full of evil and darkness. All things that are good in this place only comes from above, the Mercies of God. The Most Holy God holds no one from His Mercies. Through Jesus making Himself a sacrifice brought the Mercies of God to all His children who had fallen away unto death.
The Spirit of the Living God dwells within you. An amber, a Spark ready to be fanned into an ever burning flame.
Come to The Lord Jesus Christ, for in Him is life. He is the way, the truth and the life.

The Door.
The Door to life everlasting.

Normally I very much agree with things you say, I will however note that Ezekiel seems to go on for quite some time about the dimensions of the 3rd temple (with dimensions that fit neither Solomon's temple or Herod's) I think the idea of it "not having a roof" can be answered quite easily in that the roof is assumed. So though I think you mention some good points, there is certainly a physical temple which will be built with a physical throne. I would like to see the answer as to what the different dimensions mean if this is just about the body of Christ.
There will be no need for a roof because the new temple will be in new Jerusalem, the bride of Christ which is the bridge between earth and Heaven in the millennial reign, there will be nothing that could possibly defile it.

@@888WulfDog888 It is very unlikely a prophet would go on for 9 chapters (not written in chapter sections but you get the point) for some ultimately irrelevant metaphor that could be equally easily be summed up with "the temple will be built" instead of God being a God of confusion and adding unnecessary details, measurements, and temple ordinances. You still yet to answer what the numbers mean if it's not literal measurements.
correct but this temple is clearly not meant to be built in our current era. It has a river flowing through for one thing. This structure will exist in the soon coming 1000 year reign of Christ.
There will be no other temple built before Christ returns. Daniel 9:27 does not contain the hebrew word temple and this has been inferred in the NIV. Also Paul is talking metaphorically in 2 Thesallonians 2:4

I've often wondered if WE aren't the 'new temple' under the 'new covenant', but still believe a physical 3rd temple will be built as a sign of imminent end times.

Your view on the end times is based off how strict your hermeneutics are. The stricter the hermeneutics the more literal you take scripture and the looser the hermeneutics the more you will allegorize the scripture. I believe allegorizing scripture is a very slippery slope and is a license to invent. Of course there are multiple figures of speech in the Bible but I believe that God says what He means and means what He says. I believe the more you study sculpture and mature in Gods word the stricter your hermeneutics becomes. Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Even the Israelites acknowledge the 4 levels of scripture. God's ways are higher than our ways. It is only the Holy Spirit that leads us into Truth. Line upon line, precept upon precept leads to stumbling and falling backwards.

@@CarolJamieson I 100% believe there are multiple levels of application , but to start with allegory and create a doctrine, is not the way you should start. I believe you should start with the literal and look elsewhere in the scriptures to confirm it is so , and go from there.
Good exegesis makes the differences clear. There is both allegorical and literal meaning in the scriptures, sometimes combined together. I don't have the knowledge of Greek or of the cultural meaning of certain terms in certain times and places that many good pastors and other Christians more blessed in this gift/knowledge than I, but I find listening to John Macarthur, John Piper, RC Sproul and others to be helpful as they are painstakingly careful and extremely gifted in their exegesis. I read my Bible to develop my own understanding as well, and do not rely on men alone, but these men of God and others like them really help what is sometimes confusing to make a lot more sense through their sound exegesis. I guess my question would be, "If we're the temple it's referring to, what/where is the temple where the anti-christ performs the abomination of desolation at the mid-tribulation point?" There would have to be another physically-built temple for him to do this in no?
My guess is that he would be similar to postmillenials (like me). All of that already happened in AD 70. Also John says there where many antichrists, antichrists are anyone that is against Christ.

Perhaps jpfiero has a point, maybe the temple being defiled is our souls, as in, the spirit of what people believe. It says that beware and run if the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place.
What would be the holy place? Perhaps it's where people keep their image of God, maybe it's the identity of the people? If so, then all of this about lgbt, atheism and opposition to christianity in general being adopted, becoming the identity of many people, perhaps that is the abomination of desolation, when mankind becomes largely opposed to God and whose image of God, and the holy place that contains it, the individual identity, become inhabited by the spirit of the antichrist, the abomination.
Take my suggestion with a grain of salt though, it might be my way of rationalizing the recent events as basically this. The abomination has been there for some time.
Alternate interpretation of the holy place could be the fragmented yet united church of God, speaking of the antichrist corruption that festers in the Catholic Church, Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy.

I’m not an evangelical Protestant, but (Eastern) Orthodox, and so much of what Heiser says and writes is very much at home in Orthodoxy. In fact, it appears that his biggest critics are found among his fellow evangelicals.

Poppy Ozark, Some say, because our bodies are considered a temple of God, so thats how they justify there not needing to be a actual 3rd temple built. However I'm not sure you can consider a persons body being like a temple of God if the Holy Spirit isn't dwelling in them, and clearly the Holy Spirit isn't dwelling in the antichrist. Now I suppose its possible that standing in the temple of God, could mean the antichrist standing in Jerusalem, claiming to be God, so that could be a possibility, I suppose. I've just always figured a 3rd temple will be built, when the Jews start up the daily sacrifice once again during the start of Daniels 70th week. Yet there has been talks by Jews saying they technically don't need to build a temple to start up the daily sacrifice. So I guess will just have to wait and see, this is one part of prophecy that were going to just have to wait to see how it unfolds to know for sure. But thats not going to stop some from trying to act like they know all, lol.

I have been so blessed by your teachings and books Dr Heiser. I do have one burning question though which I hope you can answer. Has the antichrist already been and performed the abomination of desolation in the Temple? There seems to be a popular belief that a literal temple in Jerusalem (that may be different to the new Jerusalem/the church as the Temple) is required for the end times prophecies with the antichrist. Ezekiel 38&39, Daniel 8-12 all seem to require a physical temple in Jerusalem. What are your views on this?

You need the temple because it has been foretold that in the temple the lawless one who is yet to come will oppose God. Also, it could not the body of Christ since in the temple, sacrifices are being done according to Daniel 9:25-27. No one sacrifices offerings to God in the Body of Christ in a way that could be stopped by the lawless one.

@@bauboni Yep! I've been saying that for about 2 years now. That prophecy was made before the building of the 2nd Temple and it applies to that one and not some future one.
All of those objections the way I see it are easily overcome. First of all it does not state what these “sacrifices” are in the middle of the “week” the “sacrifices” in the New Testament are totally different in the New Testament and come from the heart not by sacrificing animals etc. you said “in the temple the lawless one who is yet to come will oppose God” that’s easy.. some of those “within” the temple or body of Christ will oppose God. The council did in heaven.. I don’t believe in “once saved always saved” the Bible clearly makes a case for that that one can indeed choose to walk away from God once saved. Yes He never leaves or forsakes us but we sure can choose to leave and forsake Him. Who are those that Jesus says “I never knew you”? And the last thing is you said “no one sacrifices offerings in the body of Christ that could be stopped by the enemy” well I submit this… look at the majority of the western churches sacrifices today… pretty much idol worship and entertainment focused.. seems the enemy is doing a pretty good job even before the great tribulation in opposing God within the “temple” to me. So I agree with Dr. Heiser and would have to say that within the “temple” the enemy will rise up! Yes within the “body of Christ”.. we still have free will when saved. We’re not “forced” to stay saved if we for some reason choose not to.. trust me.. the enemy will come from “within” just like Judas was “within”.. he walked, talked, slept by Jesus, ate with him, laughed with Him.. etc. and still denied him and gave Him over to be killed. Again I don’t think those objections are hurdles what so ever.
Anyone who has the opinion that the third temple doesn't need to physically exist does not know their scripture. The scriptures clearly state that the earthly temple is a copy of what is in heaven; just like the Ark of the covenant seen in said temple in Revelation 11:19. Other things point to a physical nature as well, with John being tasked to measure the temple, in the book of Revelation as well. Furthermore, in Mathew 24:15, when Christ mentions the 'abomination of desolation', he is directly referring to Antiochus Epiphanes sacrilegious sacrifice of a pig, to zeus, in the temple. Lastly, Daniel 9:27, clearly states that in the middle of the last week of Daniel, the beginning of the tribulation, that oblation in the Temple will cease. And if you look at the Septuagint of Daniel 9:27, the exact language used is 'and in the midst of the week my sacrifice and drink-offering shall be taken away'. In conclusion, there is no way to rectify what this man is saying Biblically and it is false doctrine.

I like Dr Heiser inside on the bible, but I disagree with him in this point. There is a literal millennium and a temple coming, even if it sound crazy just as a literal nation of Israel to all scholars prior to 1948.
It also presents a grand problem for *Matthew 24* which ties to what Paul speaks of in *2 Thess Ch. 2:4=* "who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God" = *This is known as the Abomination. What a lot of people look over when they scan through this Scripture because they've read it a zillion times is that 1. Obviously this is a physical temple but 2. And less obvious for western Christians is that among the Temple furnishings there is NO SEAT. The Abomination here is that he SITS in the place of not only the Priests but the HIGH PRIEST who is Jesus SEATED at the Right Hand of God and ALSO in the place of GOD who sat down and rested from ALL of HIS WORKS from beginning of Creation. This is the ULTIMATE slap in the face of God and answers in a more extreme way what Jesus did when he went to the seat of Baal and said 'Upon this rock Ill build my church.' This was and is a physical place with both a natural and spiritual history*

Speaking as a Latter-day Saint I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Heiser--that in the final analysis the eternal temple is the Body of Christ. Even so, that's not to say that temporary temples of brick and mortar are not useful. We (Latter-day Saints) have at least two hundred temples either in operation or currently under construction. They're different from our regular meeting houses. They have very sacred meaning both because of the sacred ordinances that we perform there and the rich symbolism that stems from temple theology. And so, until the day arrives that we are all united in the heavenly temple, we utilize the earthly temples to help sanctify us in preparation for that perfect day.

According to both Roman sources and Jesus himself “not one stone” was left atop another of Herod’s temple. The Bible places the Temple in the City of David, near the Spring of Gihon (necessary for purification rituals) NOT the “Temple Mount”. If this is the case, I find it fascinating that God would conceal the true Temple site for 2,000 years and sovereignly place it somewhere that would be relatively uncontested if recognized.
Except the wailing wall is in fact part of the expanded wall of the temple compound foundations the temple stood within its walls. Christ referred to the temple buildings and they are completely gone. The tabernacle never resided within the city but outside the city for in the case of the city of David it was simply too small to accommodate such a large temple.

Hes on point, & as believers I dont know why anyone would want a new temple where sin sacrifices are offered, this would be as trampling the holy blood of Christ underfoot, are once for all time spotless perfect propitiation for sin, to the praise of His majesty. We are being built up a spiritual house, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Members of the household of God, ~Eph2:20-22 built on the foundation of the apostles & prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the Cornerstone, in Whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, In Him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit

I think believers take some things literal that are meant to be symbolic, like many things in the Revelation of John. They wish to see the third temple rebuilt on the temple mount because that is a sign of the end of days. No believer should be concerned about sacrifices since they (should) understand that Jesus is The Sacrifice.

Actually, that was as clear as mud. All of the positions you are dissing are well documented and biblically based. Whether the text fits your systematic theology or not is a different story.
If you want to do anything to advance your position, then you actually have to present a case, structured on textual evidence. Discarding futurism relies on the completely disproven Preterism. Of one actually reads the text, all prophecy was not fulfilled in 70AD. A prime example are the predictions of Israel's future resurrection as a political entity. The appearance of the Antichrist did not occur in 70AD and Jesus did not appear in 70AD. Do futurism is not exactly false teaching.
Dispensationalism accurately describes the fact that God has given multiple covenants throughout history, something that nondispensationalists acknowledge with the use of the Old and New Testaments.

That was the world as they knew it, all that was meaningful to them, completely obliterated. Jesus was drawing a comparison between these catastrophic events and the time of Antiochus Epiphanes that was prophesied by Daniel. Only, it would be worse than Antiochus.

@@akaKRANNI I grew up with the dispensationalist mentality that said we're waiting for the events of Matthew 24 to start happening in the modern-day Middle-East. I just don't find that convincing anymore. I don't think it squares with sound exegesis. Also, I'm fascinated by history and I think we can really see how Jesus' prophecies have been fulfilled regarding Jerusalem and that they're not some failed end times prophecy that's been indefinitely put on hold. The Son of Man coming on the clouds is something that has happened, is happening, and will still happen. It began when Stephen saw this reality in his vision before he was stoned. The destruction of the Temple in 70 AD was the sign to the Jews that their Messiah had come and thus the Temple was obsolete.
The number one ingredient you need in order for a building to be a Biblical temple is the Holy Spirit. Even if the Jews rebuild a "temple" it won't have the Holy Spirit so cannot be a Biblical temple. My view is that the temple is the believers in Jesus as living stones being built into a temple.

When it “comes to things to come,” there are several essentials I get from Scripture: (1) There must be a Rapture of all believers (I Cor. 15:50-54; I Th. 4:13-18; Rev. 4:1-2); (2) There must be a 7-year Tribulation (Dan. 9:24-27; Matt. 24; I Th. 5:1-3); (3) There must be a temple in the Tribulation period (Dan. 9:26-27; II Th. 2:1-4); (4) At the end of the Tribulation, there must be a Second Coming of Jesus with all believers from heaven (Mark 13:24-26; Rev. 19:11-16); (5) There must be a “Millennium,” the reign of Jesus Christ upon this earth for 1,000 years (Rev. 20:1-6). Dr Michael Heiser, God bless your soul, eternity awaited you. Your teachings have meant more to me these past few months concerning our walk with Christ and His revelations to us than anything else. And on this issue I agree entirely. The earlier temples were simply manifestations of the Promise in waiting, in order for the body of the Church as believers in Gods promise in Christ to assume that mantle.
I believe the third temple will be again a move of rebellious denial of Christ once again. Just as they denied Him in the past, they will continue to do so. Revelation 2 vs 9 has a lot to do with this and the coming great deception. The church itself is not a literal building as the end of the age nears... but the hearts of men and women who believe in His advent.

Ezekiel's Temple vision includes a sacrificial system. Please explain how that fits with any post-Christ's crucifixion Temple, or even a metaphorical Temple where God and The Lamb are the Temple as it says in Revelation.
Early dispensationalists actually believed the sacrificial system would return in the millennium. The Apostles clearly said Christ was the final sacrifice for all. Who is right?
Considering who came first and who came later, Christ's apostles take precedent. Sacrifices are over after the one true sacrifice. Ultimately Ezekiel cannot be a far future prophecy.

Of course the Antichrist will be filled by Satan, as was Judas. That does not mean this is exactly what Scripture means that the Antichrist will sit in the holy place declaring Himself God.
The physical temple always played a major role. Please don't overspiritualize this (applying it it in a spiritual way exclusively) and thus overriding very straightforward statements by the Word of YHWH.

To say we won't have a 3rd temple is so psuedo. Revelation is clearly symbolic. That same chapter in revelation 21 also says we won't have a sun or moon. You can't possibly believe we won't have the Luminaries anymore. Ezekiel says we will have a 3rd temple & that's just what it is. Or he is a false prophet. Just because jesus is likened unto a river in john 7 doesn't mean every river verse is a cross reference scripture to john 7. That's bad logic. Ezekiel is quite literal. Levi will once again have the priesthood, David will reign, the 12 tribes will return home and have their own portion of land including the tribe of Dan, the temple will be rebuilt with sacrifices resuming. All of this is spoken about in the last 8 chapters of ezekiel

I suggested in my dissertation that the glory returning to the temple, which I argue is the community of faith, might be seen in the Fire of the Day of Pentecost.
Daniel 9:20-27 gives the timeline for the 2nd temple up to the baptism and crucifixion.
Verse 4 says “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
Basically meaning that the purpose of the temple is a completed work. It is finished in Christ. Therefore, I agree, there is no need for a temple in that sense. However, the temple was not destroyed until 70 AD so I presume temple functions continued until then, though I suspect unnecessarily. So I see no reason why people not recognising this and following a tradition would not rebuild a temple and continue it's tradition unnecessarily and without Gods blessing. I just think that any such temple built now would not be consecrated of God. It seems to me that since Pentecost, each believer is consecrated by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, buildings are not.
Actually, Jesus is the temple , the place where heaven and earth meet. We become a part of a living temple in and through Jesus.
Daniel mentions the abomination of desolation and Jesus points to that prophecy as well. In 2 Thessalonians 2:4 it describes the abomination of desolation and says the antichrist will sit in the temple of God and declare himself to be God. I think that's the main verse that makes people believe there needs to be a 3rd temple to fulfill the prophecy about the antichrists time on earth
If Jesus reconciled us back to God in 70 a.d....meaning that all that was written has been fulfilled...it seems obvious to me that we have the third temple dwelling within us. This is something organized religions do not want us to realize.
Yes, we do need a third temple for the end times... Revelation 11.
Confusion caused by not noticing next:
1.
The temple in Ezekiel is temple during 1000 years with Christ with restored sacrificial system.
That's earthly Jerusalem restored, as described in 70 weeks prophecy.
2.
In the New Jerusalem (after 1000 y) described in Revelation ( 21st chapter) there is no temple and no sacrifices.
Also note; measurements of Jerusalem in Ezekiel and the one in Revelation are different - TWO DIFFERENT JERUSALEMS !
Dr. Heiser, I think that the confusion lies in that Ezekiel describes a very literal temple of stone and wood yet you would have listeners understand that the temple in Revelation is the same. I think you would have to do an entire exposition on Ezekiel 40-48 and explain each physical detail as something spiritual.

Interesting. How do Dr. Heiser's ideas jive with Rev. 11 (he may answer this in the full-length presentation)? Rev. 11 appears to describe a physical temple. Rev. 21:22 says the temple is not in New Jerusalem. Still, we're not told what happened to the Rev. 11 temple. Zech. 14 is another passage worth examining when considering this Q.
Some ask, ‘ How can the man of perdition stand in the Holy Place and declare himself God’ if the temple isn’t physically built? Recall that Jesus said that, in the latter days many will come saying,” I am he” and “ I am the Christ”. If one looks with a clear eye at the state of the lack of real Biblical discernment in the Church today ( and I’m talking about the genuine believers) and how we so easily are accepting the Celebrity Pastor meme today ( all that is necessary for someone to be considered a “teacher” or a “leader” - think Francis Chan or guys like that - is to have a RUclips channel or to write some books) one can easily see how what the Scriptures describe can be referring to the Body of Christ. Remember, the true Bride will NOT be fooled and will easily recognize that he is the man of perdition but the “foolish maidens” will not.

Daniel 9:27 another temple they are sacrificing again at end times but there is no temple now but will be, they have everything ready to build again. Just a thought.
