I use only used motor oil on outdoor wood projects. I don't dilute it and just wipe it on with a brush. Usually needs re-treatment every 2 years. It's free and makes the wood last for a very long time - treated or not.
Great video! I remember my relatively small fence at my last house cost over $1000 to have professionally stained- this would have saved me so much money. I have dozens of gallons of used oil. If only I had a fence to stain now...
I've been staining my fence with used oil. I even did my deck last year. You're right tho, the color does fade slightly but it still repelled water. I used a roller on my fence so i could just dip it in the oil bucket and go. A sprayer did not work as well for me
A roller sounds like a good idea. I don't want, need, or have a sprayer, but want to do my fence. Was trying to guess how long it'd take by hand, but a roller would be way faster than a brush. Not so daunting a task it seems. Thanks, brother
I installed an extremely expensive cedar fence..paid to have it stained and sealed. 2 yrs later it looks like absolute garbage. I'm going to try this myself. I'm wondering if a color additive can be used or would it mess up everything.
@dalpz205 yes you can use color. I think you'd have better info from someone that professionally does paints cause I'm not sure how tints in base paints differ between water and oil based stuff. I did use a bottle of concrete stain to tint my oil. It came out darker but i found if i could get hold of used oil that was more conventional and less synthetic and used in diesel engines, the more dirty it was the darker it looked. Your main issue will be sun bleaching it but over the years doing maintenance coats will keep it dark
@mleachx1 Thanks! I appreciate your input! I saw some kind of tint powder on Amazon and was just curious if anyone had tried tinting. My fence is bleaching out so bad it I can just wait another year if it doesn't look good lol
Looks really nice as well lowers the chemical footprint of more chemicals being manufactured to make stain of which is no less toxic to environment I would guess anyway. Oil is a natural product as was proven after BP oil spill as it was eventually consumed by environment where it came from.
Turn out awesome guys. Looks good! Next time go to harbor freight and get you an airless sprayer and mix up about 5 gallons of it. Spray it on in under 10 to 20 minutes for that whole fence
Yes, you can use gasoline, and nothing else. Just mainly oil, and a little gas to thin it. Just don't smoke when spraying. The distillates will allow to penetrate and gas off over a few days outside.
Think I can run this old trick without a sprayer? Just gloves, my oil container and a sacrificial oil rag/brush? I'm gonna do it anyway, but what do you think? I'd like to not also spray across the vegetation where I'm renting at. We're almost into the suburbs and every bit of greenery left counts. I'm doing a truck box from spare lumber.
Is there a formula for an old red wood deck that will dry and not come off on you shoes? Also, will this aid in repelling termites and yes, termites will eat red wood... Very informative and well put together video! TIA
You should have pressure washed the fence first to get the natural color back ( get the gray off ) then it would have realy popped..... great video though thanks
I WOULD have used homemade stain on my fence, and was already ordering ingredients on Amazon while the rest of your video played, but then when you showed your fence, I closed my cart, and stopped. Is there a way to modify the colors acheived. No offence but the way your fence looked, was NOT what I'd want on mine.
these dirty combustion engine cars 😂 😂 what about all the pollutants it takes to make energy efficient cars.... the batteries, all the parts metal and plastic.. it's not like it doesn't put any pollutants out and on top of it it's not economical for majority of people to just go out and buy a brand new car ( new to them) honestly at this point we're fuked it doesn't matter I just took the most depressing college course ever and we haven't even seen the total effects of the pollution from the industrial revolution so yeah we should cut it back maybe slow it down but that's not really going to happen in a global level so whatever..... we're f*****
I use 50% diesal and 50% motor oil The test isnt really a good indicator. A peice of wood your going to spray on is . Its the fibers in the wood that catch fast . Doing another heavy coat shortly after ir drys helps close up the the pores in the wood , less pores = less air = better fire retention. Any wood with motor oil and diesal will be more flammable even after it drys , but the key is to seal it. Many coats gives it an oxygen barrier.
That’s why I change all my family’s oil! Give me all that sweet dirty juice😂
😂

It looks so much better. I really like the the great color! Thanks 😊
Great way to reuse a dirty by-product in a beneficial way. Solid clarification on the flammability angle as well. Good work Gents!!!
Looks better than other videos I've seen where they use the old engine oil neat. Adding the thinners gives it a lighter more professional look. 👍
Reapplying every year would cost alot of time but the store stuff seriously $$..
That’s some wild rain y’all got😳 3:21

A good airless sprayer that goes in a bucket is the best way to go

I really like the color on cedar fencing using 3 parts used oil and 1 part diesel.

Great video extreme good explanation
I like the color of new bar and chain oil.
Good info. I would use it.

Looks like I’ll be changing my own oil from now on
Thin with diesel fuel and spray on with one of those pump sprayers.
Great information ❤ thanks for your informative videos!!!
I use this all year on every project of mine and when family and friends want me to do something for them I use the goo.
Use farm diesel its cheaper and has that nice red dye in it.
Definitely gonna use this. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if you could store this in a 5 gallon acetone metal container.
If I touch the fence after it drys will I have oil residue on my hand? Or is it pretty clean after it drys?
It is pretty dry where I am at, but I would say after a couple days it will be fairly dry to the touch.
Talking with a farmer who used oil and diesel he applied once and forgot about it. I wonder if its the paint thinner?
Positive, I'd Use As A Wood Fence Stain.
You should have pressure washed the fence first to get the natural color back ( get the gray off ) then it would have realy popped..... great video though thanks
In Austria it is illegal to stain wood or anything else in engine oil.
Change your own oil, and use a stain bucket as a drain pan. No one will ever know without lab results. Don't let em get that close.
Gee dad ! Can I try the fire test!? Sure son!
How long untill the smeĺl disappeared?
That's what I want to know
If you include diesel, it is pretty strong for about the first week after applying.
Do you run synthetic or conventional oil?
Either should work for staining. I typically run synthetic.

I would try this if I had a wooden fence.
Going to auto zone today to get me some of that dirty juice
You still breathing, after all that VOC exposure?
so what happens if the fence catches on fire? :v
Bonfire
@@TheArtOfHomeownership pretty and smelly bonfire!
