I doubt anybody working at Crystal Dynamics today could write as good as Amy did back in the day for the series. So I don't know if I'd want a remake from anybody working in industry today.

Many years ago in the year 2000 my mom, on a complete whim probably on a random Tuesday, picked Soul Reaver out of a sale bin in a Toys R Us store and gave it to me. Little did she realize she introduced me to a game series that was, is, and will always be my favorite of all time for so many reasons. I'll never forget being blown away by the voice talent when I started it up and watched the opening FMV as I was so used to other games - if they even had proper voice work - having less serious and more "Saturday Morning cartoon" type of voicework. (The irony is not lost on me that Michael Bell, Tony Jay and other talent from this series actually voiced SO MANY "Saturday Morning Cartoons"!) This cast of voices enhanced an already interesting story heavy game which had a Shakespearian script and a very small intimate cast of characters that were all interesting in their own right, even the bad guys. In all my years I've never played another game like the Legacy of Kain series and I am absolutely LOVING this remaster and all the unearthed extras, including being able to PLAY AND EXPLORE THE UNCOVERED CUT CONTENT. It's barebones in many respects and I would be surprised if it garners any younger fans due to its aged clunky nature, but for those of us that were OG fans this is AMAZING to have and it's nothing short of a type of playable museum piece. I'd love a proper full remaster as I do feel this series deserves it (with the original voice talent preferably... no one can voice Raziel and Kain better than Michael Bell and Simon Templeman!) but I am beyond thrilled to have this at least. The ability to replay SR 1 and 2 without dragging out my PS2 or Dreamcast is worth it in and of itself!
I myself don't get the hate of the newer gamers about brick/crate puzzles. I loved them back in the day and it made the game more immersive and made us take a break from all the killings and use our brains other than just thinking of thousands of ways to shoot your enemy and just roaming around the map aimlessly. The fact that those same newer players love Minecraft and Roblox which are very primitive looking games and don't mind building, breaking and pushing things around still boggles me.
Playing this for the first time and am loving it all really besides the block puzzles to be honest, nothing against the game im just a dad now and don't have the time or patience to sit stuck on a puzzle for ages these days kinda glad there not a thing anymore. Besides that the game has sucked me in
I think it's a real shame that this series doesn't get as much love and attention that it deserves. There is so much lore and history to this series that there needs to be more, fleshed out and shown off.
It did. There were like 9 projects or so cancelled including one with almost gold status (Dead Sun). Quality standarts were very high. They tried their best and failed to create a worthy successor.

Dude i remember me as a little boy getting lost in this game as a 5 year old and i never got to actually play it because i never understood it completely i’m so happy now going through the levels of this remake its just amazing ps2 gaming era was something else

My dad's cousin had these games back in the early 2000s and he would let me and my brother borrow them. Absolutely love this series and so glad this came out. Cant wait to try it out and actually complete both games!

I feel you, but I didn't get the guide until the 2nd or third game. The first one I remember going to the "computer room" to look to how to get across a chasm on dial up. The good ol' days.
My god The Legacy of Kain serious is such an underrated game. The storytelling, the voice acting, is legendary to me. I would love a remaster Defiance and maybe, just maybe a final game to be announced. "Vae Victis !"

They just did a remaster, so unless they're planning to give everyone who buys it a free upgrade, it'll be another 20 years until a remake. Somebody use RTX Remix to give this thing raytracing and it'll make a HUGE difference
I'm so happy this happened. It's been great re-experiencing this game. I really hope that this does well. I've been screaming on the internet for years that I like to see this franchise come back. It'd be great to see some remakes of the Blood Omens as well. I think one way they could go is by doing a prequel to even Kain.

I've never been this excited for a game. I used to play the first game on my PS1 as a kid. It was one of my favourite games to hop on just for the atmosphere.
Let's be honest the great thing about this is that it's a PC title and thus it will be modded with updated graphics updated physics updated weapons even possibly expanded storyline that is what's great about this it's cool to have the original but the game needs a total overhaul and modders will get it done
My soul complaint, and someone said it first elsewhere, is that they are completely missing out on the original game, which means people do not know who Kain is how he became a vampire lord or the backstory. Then again, Wikipedia exists

My favorite thing about this game is how the game mechanics all have a lore reason for being. They give lore for check points in SR2 lol It truly is a master piece. Truth be told, this game series is the reason I wanted to go into writing.
Kinda reminds me of Elden Ring /souls games in that way. People like to say “there is no story” in those when actually they go out of their way to explain the reason for certain mechanics lol

If a game is 10 years older or less...then a remaster is ok but when a game is 20+ years old....it really should've been remade from the ground up. With today's hardware, I bet the game would be really dark/gritty. Talk about opportunity missed. Maybe some of the OG fans will play this but I don't see any younger gamers are going to be interested in this. The graphics and gameplay are extremely dated.
Phenomenal game deserving recognition. However, fair warning, technically this bundle does not complete the story. There is a third game not included. Which is a shame
Played this with all the classics of the time. Lara, Snake, Tony Hawk, Gran Turismo… Then, I took a long break from gaming. When I picked up Dark Souks 3 for the first time about ten years ago, this game came flooding back from my memory, especially with the souls flying into you. Once it goes on sale, I'll pick them up again.
Game is fun but the camera during combat is the biggest issue I have. The camera doesn't lock behind you and I find it annoying how free the camera moves when fighting multiple enemies, but it's still good. I can finally play what I couldn't finish as a kid without the memory card issues. LOL
First game I ever finished. I still remember sitting there and watching all the credits. Played every related game that was made after. I hope this does well enough to show the powers that be that this is a franchise we want to see more of.
This series needs a Demon's Souls Remake treatment. Just leave the overall experience as it is, tweak a bit of the combat to flesh it out a bit more and improve the graphics. I am so happy LoK is back and extremely excited for new players to experience such mastepieces. Vae Victis!

I remember seeing ads in magazines of this game back in the day. The character design just looked so cool! I never got a chance to play it back than so definitely going to check it out.
Thank you Jake I agree with all of your thoughts. I first played this title at launch on Dreamcast and I remember feeling that the opening cutscene was the best a game could/would ever look. I played the series very thoroughly, including Defiance and Blood Omen 2. I feel it’s going to be very satisfying to play these games with my adult mind/vocabulary. Even grasping the implications of the story was difficult for me as a child - particularly the ending of part 2. It makes me glad to hear you feel this series has a special aura. A full remake could easily also be a canonical sequel. They must have tuned up the audio too. All those little background screams and weird cries sound nice and crispy. I’m only a little bit into it but I’m already very satisfied.
I think this series is one of the best written in the history of gaming. I'm not exaggerating, once you go deeper into the lore it just blows your mind as to how much love was given to this series. It's sad that the next game in the series, titles dark sun iirc was cancelled. But from the leaked/released gameplay of it, I was hyped, and still hopeful that these remasters will open the doors for the series to return in full swing.
I never got the chance to play the original cause the disc I had was got scratched and couldn't install it and always wondered how is the game just by looking at the art covers. Glad to see that it got reworked and I can try it after 20 years later.
it's crazy right? I played it for the first time in 1997. I would of been about 10 years old. but I remember seeing that FMV for the first time and thinking about how great it looked. when I saw the HD cleanup for the first time last night I was struck again by how well that FMV still looks today.
This is epic timing. Just a few days ago I was thinking about playing the first Blood Omen for the first time. I wonder if it's available on Steam. Kain is one of the best fictional villains of all time. I hope a new generation gets to know him.

Blood Omen still has one of the best lores in game. I remember my first programming project back in high school, it was all about the Nosgoth. I wish they make a full remake and start with that. also, love the ultrawide content.
Jake said it by the end, the dozens of video essays about this game should be a good indicator of the level of work building and story telling you will find. If you can tolerate some of its clunky mechanics this is definitely a high recommendation. One of my favorite series ever.
I had the demo for Soul Reaver for a bit before I "Blockbustered" the full game with my late Stepfather. I look forward to completing it now, years later... Glad to hear they didn't "mess it up"!
The idea of the world changes when you jump from the material world to the spectral world is super cool idea and some modern games like Lord of the Fallen.
So I gotta say I had the "beta" version of this back in the day for my ps1.... then I bought the original ps1 game- played the hell out of it... then bought the PC version... Bought an original ps1 version (almost 3 decades later) paid top dollar for it to play on my chipped Ps2. Didnt work so well, I literally had to open the CD drive sometimes so the game wouldn't freeze. . then bought the ps3 version, but back then internet wasn't as widely available as now. So I bought the ps3 on my friends profile using my ps3 and thought I could use it when I get home- never damn worked. So some time later I made my own profile in psn... bought another version for ps3.. worked! And now the remaster!... lol. I think it's safe to say this is my favourite game of all time. I have the whole series... but Soul Reaver is special to me.
I would love if after this remaster get some success, they actually make a full remake of those two games and give them a much more complex combat, something like God of War 2008/Ragnarok.
There comes a point when a game is just too old to remaster and only a remake will do. Shame they didn’t go all the way. Such a cool world and characters.

First game I ever finished. I still remember sitting there and watching all the credits. Played every related game that was made after. I hope this does well enough to show the powers that be that this is a franchise we want to see more of.
I never got to play these games as a kid back in the day. Glad to finally get a chance to play these games!
The extra content was full of things I didn't know I needed. Definitely a nice effort from the devs.
This series needs a Demon's Souls Remake treatment. Just leave the overall experience as it is, tweak a bit of the combat to flesh it out a bit more and improve the graphics.

I remember seeing ads in magazines of this game back in the day. The character design just looked so cool! I never got a chance to play it back than so definitely going to check it out.

One of my favourite series. So happy with this remaster. This series is why i wanted to make video games.
This game was absolutely incredible and is still one of the greatest game I have ever played. I can’t wait to play again and share it with my son.
Thank you Jake I agree with all of your thoughts. I first played this title at launch on Dreamcast and I remember feeling that the opening cutscene was the best a game could/would ever look. I played the series very thoroughly, including Defiance and Blood Omen 2. I feel it’s going to be very satisfying to play these games with my adult mind/vocabulary. Even grasping the implications of the story was difficult for me as a child - particularly the ending of part 2. It makes me glad to hear you feel this series has a special aura. A full remake could easily also be a canonical sequel.
They must have tuned up the audio too. All those little background screams and weird cries sound nice and crispy. I’m only a little bit into it but I’m already very satisfied.

I think this series is one of the best written in the history of gaming. I'm not exaggerating, once you go deeper into the lore it just blows your mind as to how much love was given to this series. It's sad that the next game in the series, titles dark sun iirc was cancelled. But from the leaked/released gameplay of it, I was hyped, and still hopeful that these remasters will open the doors for the series to return in full swing.
The "Legacy of Kain" Series of games has the best story ever. Raziel and Kain are beyond cool and they are voiced by 2 legends.
I never got the chance to play the original cause the disc I had was got scratched and couldn't install it and always wondered how is the game just by looking at the art covers. Glad to see that it got reworked and I can try it after 20 years later.
That opening FMV for Soul Reaver 1 is beautiful. My friends thought it was a ps3 game when they saw it
it's crazy right? I played it for the first time in 1997. I would of been about 10 years old. but I remember seeing that FMV for the first time and thinking about how great it looked. when I saw the HD cleanup for the first time last night I was struck again by how well that FMV still looks today.

This is epic timing. Just a few days ago I was thinking about playing the first Blood Omen for the first time. I wonder if it's available on Steam. Kain is one of the best fictional villains of all time. I hope a new generation gets to know him.

Blood Omen still has one of the best lores in game. I remember my first programming project back in high school, it was all about the Nosgoth. I wish they make a full remake and start with that.

Jake said it by the end, the dozens of video essays about this game should be a good indicator of the level of work building and story telling you will find. If you can tolerate some of its clunky mechanics this is definitely a high recommendation. One of my favorite series ever.
I had the demo for Soul Reaver for a bit before I "Blockbustered" the full game with my late Stepfather. I look forward to completing it now, years later... Glad to hear they didn't "mess it up"!
The idea of the world changes when you jump from the material world to the spectral world is super cool idea and some modern games like Lord of the Fallen.

I had the "beta" version of this back in the day for my ps1....
then I bought the original ps1 game- played the hell out of it...
then bought the PC version...
Bought an original ps1 version (almost 3 decades later) paid top dollar for it to play on my chipped Ps2. Didnt work so well, I literally had to open the CD drive sometimes so the game wouldn't freeze.
. then bought the ps3 version, but back then internet wasn't as widely available as now. So I bought the ps3 on my friends profile using my ps3 and thought I could use it when I get home- never damn worked.
So some time later I made my own profile in psn... bought another version for ps3.. worked!
And now the remaster!... lol. I think it's safe to say this is my favourite game of all time.
I have the whole series... but Soul Reaver is special to me.
I would love if after this remaster get some success, they actually make a full remake of those two games and give them a much more complex combat, something like God of War 2008/Ragnarok.
This remaster is has all I wanted, new coat of paint, bug fixes, cut content and the core gameplay intact...

There comes a point when a game is just too old to remaster and only a remake will do. Shame they didn’t go all the way. Such a cool world and characters.
