      Who came up with the idea that his name is Matthias Kohler?

    It is perfectly logical that most countries will use antiquated names as they themselves are incredibly old with a lot of historical influence in their backgrounds. It probably wouldn't be likely for them to keep up with the "100 most popular baby names" each year, and it wouldn't actually be beside me if Romano still used a name rooted in Latin and the Roman era.

Lavino though, not much. Feliciano is also a name used here, and we have never had Italian influence. My state was highly influenced by the Portuguese.

  • @alegwen714
    @alegwen714 5 лет назад +21

    Oooh! Really interesting video! Actually I’m from South Italy and I’ve never heard the name “Lovino” before Hetalia, even if in the dialect of my zone we say “Lu vinu” to say “The wine”. If you translate it in Italian it would be literally “Lo vino”, even if this is wrong for the Italian Grammar. In fact in Italian before the word “vino” you have to use the article “il” and not “lo”. So, it would be “il vino”.
    Actually I don’t know if this is the origin of the nome “Lovino”, but ... well... names like Livio (a Latin name. In fact there is a famous Latin writer called “Tito Livio”), Rufino (I’ve never heard this name before XD), Lavinio (I’ve heard only Lavinia, that is Enea’s wife. Enea and Lavina, generations after generations, will origin Rea Silvia that, after being abused by Marte/Ares, the god of war, will generate Romolo and Remo), Luigi, Luigino (It means “little Luigi” or “cute Luigi”. It’s not a serious name anymore. People use it as a nickname, but it’s kind of... how to say... ridiculous and funny. I laughed so hard reading Luigino actually. XDDD) ... are pretty far from the name “Lovino”.
    I think that it would be cool if the name of Lovino actually comes from Lavinia, but ... Uhm...
    By the way, I can confirm that Rovino means “I ruin” in Italian, but I don’t know that Lovinium in Latin means “Little wolf” (and I study Latin in my school).

  • @nemnemi111
    @nemnemi111 4 года назад +54

    Actually, if Lovino means Little Wolf, I think it fits perfectly with the character. I'll explain. First, I thought the connection was with the national animal of Italy, which is the Italian Wolf. But actually it doesn't make any sense, so it can't be this connection... then... let's make a step back. Lovino is called also Romano, and the name take inspiration from Rome, who is considered the most important city of Shout Italy (followed by Naples and a few cities of Sicily). I don't know if someone knows, but the legend of Rome says the city was constructed by one of two brothers who successively became the first king of Rome. This two were already from an important family, but because the parents were killed or something like that by people whom wanted the power they had (so, their kingdom), decided to kill the siblings so no one could succeed at the throne. But the two weren't killed, actually they were abandoned in the Nature, all alone. Here, a female wolf took care of them and feed them, so this is why I think Romano it's called little wolf. It makes much more sense like this! Actually, I didn't explained well the legend because of my bad english, but you can do a research on google. By the way, it's kinda funny to think Romano and Feliciano are actually those two brothers, but in the legend one of them kill the other one, so maybe not ":D

    B is commonly translated into V when going from Japanese to English, mostly because Japanese's most common substitute for V is B.
    It's kind of like a substitute for an L being R. An example of the V/B substitution is the Pokémon "ビビヨン", which has been translated to Vivillon in English.

    By the way in Italian Felice is mostly used as an adjective while Feliciano it’s only a first name, even if isn’t common, so I prefer Feliciano (little note: the “c” in Feliciano it’s not pronounced like an “s”, like the word “see”, but in Italian it’s pronounced like the words “charmander” or “churros”. I know these are stupid examples, but I didn’t have other words in mind. XDDD And ... ah! The “z” in Veneziano it’s not a “c” like “charmander”, but it’s pronounced “z”, like “Zorro” or even “zero”).

    Really, I just use Lavinio for now. Though really, why does Hima use such obscure names that might not even be accurate? Seriously! He could have just used Mario and Luigi and at least that wouldn’t be as odd.
    Also, Vargas... why is it Vargas? Seriously, VARGAS? What, was “Ferrari” just too obvious? (Though it is a very meta surname for an Argentina)
    Where did Hima look for this stuff? He could have just used something generic for everyone, but no, instead he picked rare names that are extremely dubious due to their rarity.
    Though there are other surname-first name mix-ups too. Like “Berwald” is, according to all my sources, a surname.

    Currently the only Italian thing of the Italian brothers is precisely the name "Feliciano", it is a name that. Wtf is Vargas and wtf is a Lovino
    Hima wasn't very precise
    The female version of Romano is just "Chiara", "Lavinia" is rarer.
    Lovino in Italian sound like "Ovino" literally : "Sheep"

      They have specific designations for "b" sounds, so it's not nearly this close. Even more, they go out of their way to write "v" sound like the one here, because it's the sound they learned from the westerners, so it's strictly the "v" here.

      my birth name is rlly strange and uncommon in an average setting too, but i get why being common is part of the argument. these characters are representations of entire countries and their histories, as well as stereotypes. if youre gonna make a character to represent italy, youd want him to have a normal italian name right? nothing wrong with uncommon names but it doesnt make much sense to give a hetalia character one ^^;
