Great vid this bud, really nicely put together. Valley of Rains really is breathtaking isn't it! I think it could well be the best looking Spectrum game ever made.
@@MODERN_RGN Absolutely. I hope the Zoysa team are okay. Did you follow Natasha's FB posts, showcasing the games they had in development? Some fantastic stuff in the pipeline. We can only hope the world pulls itself back together soon and the team can continue their excellent work.
Great video and quite hard to make. Knowing the games is no easy tásk, but doing the relativons between old and new is even harder, specially when thinks are not that ibvious , yesh that ddoom clone and eidolon
I really liked this video, but I had a bit of trouble with the comparison between The Eidolon and The Dark Redux. Most of the comparisons are very similar, but for that pair, I felt the Eidolon was emphasizing its fractal organic looking caves. The Dark Redux is an impressive Wolfenstein game but I feel it was going for a different aesthetic. Still, this taught me a lot about Spectrum games!
As the headline says these comparisons can be seen as Evolution of games, and especially here as First Person Shooter games was not invented back then. The first FPS game was Wolfenstein in 1992. There are also all the old 3D maze games, but I think The Eidolon might be one of the best games to show how far developement had come in the 80s, as it is first person view, you can go where you want, it has diagonal movements and you meet enemies that has to be shot, and there are items to pick up...
It's ironic that the only commercial games are the worst ones: 15:11 Laserbirds, the clone of Phoenix -Pheenix is lot worse than the original (the pacing is too fast...it's almost unplayable)... 37:15 Space Racing is a mess..it's just a tech demo of a pseudo Mode 7 for ZX Spectrum!..but the track isn't there.. For the rest ..most of the original conversions were already very good from a gameplay standpoint. For example Trailblazer, Boulderdash, Ghost'n Goblins, Pheenix, Savage, Chase HQ, Impossaball, Wec Le Mans are lot better in the original version because in exchange of more color/soundtrack we have also a jerkier scroll tradeoff in the newer conversions.
I see it in another way: Trailblazer = Almost impossible to play, you go off the track all the time. Boulder Dash = The scrolling does not work, way too slow and you can run out of the screen. Ghosts'n Goblins = Almost unplayable because it is way too tough, and at places it is hard to see what is going on because of clash. Pheenix = Enjoyable! Savage = Also very, very tough, while you can get quite far in V.O.R. the first time you play it. Chase HQ = Enjoyable! Wec Le Mans = Starts great and is fast, but also soon becomes impossible and there are only one car design, and very few different objects in the side of the road. The track seems the same all the time. I enjoy Space Racing a lot, and can get to the last tracks without cheating. There are shortcuts to find, and using them will make things a lot easier. Also you can disable collision detedtion with opponents, and if you prefer you can disable the colors 😉 But it will off course always be individually what people prefer to play. Cheers!

Nicely done, and a great way to show what all the talented programmers have achieved years after the Speccy was made
Fantastic gaming evolution of the good old Zx spectrum here my friend, enjoyed this! 👍

Yes, this is the Spectrum's "Shadow of the Beast"

No, I have not seen these, but I hope they will be released. So far I have bought all of their games on cassette 👍

There are more Boulder Dash similar games: Earth Shaker and Automated Cave Explorer.
As C64 fanboy, Tourmaline really impressed me.
Some magnificent examples of coders doing the impossible here.
Old to top ...

Seems the original ms pacman was not to bad
It is quite good and it is my favourite ZX Pac-Man game from the 80s 👍
Cómo Clive Sinclair dejo morir todo esto, de no creer! Lo que se hubiera logrado!

Would it be fair to say sometimes less is more, I prefer many of the originals..
Download links is available for both "less" and "more" versions, so people can get whatever version they prefer 😊
I agree. Although in the case of Kung-Fu Master....
Te faltó Bruce Lee
