The way I´ve seen it was "Frieren at the funeral" or "Frieren, who brings the funeral", which doesn´t really roll off the tongue, so I´ve also seen "Frieren the Undertaker". I have no idea what the "real" or most precise translation would be. But they are all pretty dope titles.
Yeah, Flamme plopped down barriers all over the place. Remember when the crew got stopped at that town and they said they couldnt fly over the wall because of a barrier?
I think the cook for the barrier was that for a shield powerful enough to stop the demon army, its original purpose was to just shield a single plant. Hence the genius of Flamme.
No, if they had fought the two demons there in that situation, Fern and Stark would've either lost or won at the cost of their own lives or won with only one of the 3 humans there left alive. Fern didn't just "blast them more" because they weren't in an advantageous situation. 1- They don't know the abilities of the two demons. (good choice for them to not fight there since the injured one is a blood mage and even if nearer to death, there is a lot of his blood around now and he is thus much more powerful) 2- They have to protect an injured person. 3- Fern only go that shot in because of surprise. She was aiming for the center of Lugner's body, and he still managed to partly dodge enough to not die instantly. 4- That spell has a charge time. It's not instantaneous. Linie(girl demon) and Lugner(manipulating his blood all around, including his blood on the clothes of Fern and Stark) would've stopped her and forced her to be on the defensive. 5- Unlike Stark, Fern was too far to get his blood on her from him getting injured by her spell. Lugner manipulated his blood to go to her while distracting her by talking. And the only reason he didn't go to kill her with a blood spike at that time is because he wanted answers about the spell she used.
It's not that complicated, the truth is that both Stark and Fern greatly overvalue their enemies and minimize their own abilities, that's why Frieren sent them to fight the demons with a smile, because she knows the true magnitude of their abilities better than they do.
Fern: She's clumsy, have a bad sense of time and couldn't wake up early. Demon: FRIEREN THE SLAYER! The fact that she modified a Demon spell to specialize in killing Demon is nutty.
Interesting enough, that title(Frieren the Slayer) isn't one known by humans. It is a title demons gave to Frieren. She's only known under that title by demons who know of her.
One of the hardest title drop 葬送のフリーレン, the kanji 葬送 (Sousou) now have 2 meanings, first is funeral, but from the pov of demons to Frieren it's Undertaker. 葬(bury) 送(send), so it's like Frieren said i'm sending y'all demons to grave 😂
I think it's implied that the barrier was originally meant to protect the greenery and grew along side the nature until it reaches its maximum size. And that a town was later built there within the now grown barrier while Flamme was still alive (since that's the only way the lord of the town would be able to have received the method to manipulate the barrier (which he did when he let the 3 demons in, since otherwise they would've been harmed a lot from simply touching the barrier).
If a barrier spell potent enough to protect an entire town like this without maintenance was still able to be casted, then it would be around every town rather than just this one.
@@TheHunterkiller96 That's precisely my point why it's not a case of the grimoire having the info on how to make such a barrier. There was literally another similar barrier on Flamme's house centered on the tree the grew on top of it, as seen in episode 4. Flamme didn't tell people how to make this barrier. As for why, my personal guess has to do with the possible weakness yet strength of this barrier. Maybe it is maintained by the very life energy of nature while simultaneously helping nurture said nature, creating a positive feedback loop. And if people know that from her telling people how to make the barrier, then it might become possible to destroy the barriers by using non-magical means to damage said nature through the barrier, or it would now allow people with bad intentions the knowledge of what to harm to sabotage the barriers. If this is how it works, then I think that it's a good enough reason to not make the know-how of how to make these barriers public to humans, since info will definitely always get leaked eventually.
That scene is completely anime only, there is no way to know, I'm pretty sure she just placed it there to simply keep the plant alive, I highly doubt the barrier grew over time.
My take on it is that Fern and Stark already used the element of surprise, they could risk a fight with the demon girl not knowing what she's capable of, or simply use the stalemate to retreat with Graf Granat
They didn't try and kill the demons immediately because rescuing the lord was higher priority, so they retreated in the hopes of getting him to safety/treatment. If they had fought, lord probably would have died, either from the injury he already had, or from collateral from their fight with the demons.
No, Fern could already use the "ordinary offensive magic" version of Zoltrack that human mages commonly use when Frieren met her. What actually happened was that Frieren simply taught her how to use this "ordinary offensive magic" better without telling Fern that she was actually teaching her a modified version specialized to kill demons by breaking down the magic resistance they maintain on their bodies. Like Lugner said, demon at large overcame Zoltrack around 50 years ago, after having had to fight against humans using Zoltrack against them for 30 years or so. Demons manages to upgrade their magic resistance on their bodies to block piercing magic. However, the version that Frieren uses is made to specifically go through this new magic resistance technique, and was thus not taught to most humans so that demons don't learn of it and prepare to block it until it is too late for them.
So, "Frieren the Slayer" sounds badass enough on its own. But it's also a really awesome moment in Japanese specifically. The way "Frieren the Slayer" is written in the Japanese text is Identical to the way "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" is written. The entire title of the series takes on a whole new meaning here.
There is a small detail: after Frieren killed Drath, she said, "That's one down," but in Japanese, she uses 'itpiki' which is a word for one, but prefers small animals.
Just realized that when Luger doesn't sense Fern, it''s a throwback to when Freinen found Fern on the cliff when she was younger and didn't sense her presense. The way this show makes everything go full circle is amazing.
I think retreating like they did makes sense. Lugner was injured but still alive and a potential threat, Linie is there and they have no idea what her capability is, and Fern only got the previous hit by having the element of surprise. Trying to charge up a second blast with one possibly two active enmeis in the room isn’t a great plan. On top of this Graf Granat is injured making him a liability if Stark and Fern try to go for an extended fight at that moment. So taking Graf Granat and backing off and planning to try to continue the fight later on better footing is a solid plan in that moment.
Remember that Frieren was Flamme’s best student (we hear this from Eisen). Being a genius requires more than just having an intelligent teacher. _You_ have to be smart enough to understand everything too.
I always figured the reason why Fern doesn't just finish them off is two-fold. First, they have very little information on what their opponents are capable of. They only now vaguely know that Lugner can use blood magic, but they have no information on what Linie can do. Second, their primary objective was to save Granat, who is fatally injured and actively dying. If they end up having a proper fight in that small enclosed area, there's a high chance of Granat being hit by a stray spell, or the fight gets dragged out for too long and Granat dies anyway. Retreating without fighting ensures the highest possibility of Granat surviving.
9:35 I’ll take the bullet for Lupa. I’m pretty sure that protection barrier Flamme cast over that sapling is the same barrier that now protects the town. I’m assuming it started as a small safe area by the tree so it kept expanding over the course of 1,000 years into the what is now the town. I don’t know if it’s the case, but I bet Flamme somehow knew there was a future settlement/city that would be there if she protected that sapling as well. She just seems like the type
Flamme erected a lot of barriers during her life. Most of them still standing today (like the city they could not leave earlier or the one to protect her diary. It is one of her major spells and legacy to humanity and it seems that she didn't taught it to a lot of people in order to limit the chances the demons could learn how to dispell them.
So fun thing, in Japanese the title of the show can either be read as "Frieren at the funeral" or "Frieren the cause of funerals" so that was technically a title drop at the end of that episode
Tanjiro: All demons are basicly misundestood children, I'm gonna empathize with them when I slay them... Frieren: KILL ON SIGHT | NO NEGOTIATION | NO REGRETS
12:55 The demons have a hostage they'll absolutely kill to gain an advantage, there are still guards around who may not know the peace envoys have turned on them, they don't know what Linie can do or the extent Lugner can manipulate blood and Stark had already gotten stabbed through the arm and chest. Fighting it out there is not advisable. They're in the disadvantage and risk losing the Graf and having to fight with the soldiers.
Fun fact: "Frieren the Slayer" is a title drop. "Sousou no Frieren" is the Japanese title of the series, which means "Frieren at the funeral". It also means "Frieren who brings the funeral", translated here as Frieren the Slayer.
So this episode had a ultra cool title drop moment that was completely missed, because title of the series is localized as Frieren, Beyond Journey's End, which granted sounds cool and fits the series and OG title is hard to TL, but that's kinda translator's job. Basically "sousou" in Sousou no Frieren usually means attending a funeral or sending the dead off, so demons literally call her someone that visits you to send you off to your grave. They basically treat her as Grim Reaper. I personally think "Frieren of the funereal" carries the 2 potential meanings the best, as it could be understood as "Frieren that attends a lot of funerals" as well as "Frieren that *causes* a lot of funerals"
Admittedly, starting what would potentially be a big fight would've endangered Graf, so getting out of there with Graf in tow was the safer call to make while Lugner was recovering.
The barrier was grown over the leaf. You can see in present day the barrier looks like huge curtains, and in the past the spell Flamme cast on the leaf took the form of three layers that looked cloth-like. From the tree in episode 4 and this barrier it's pretty clear that Flamme was good at casting long term magic that grows in strength over time utilizing energy from nature.
For what it's worth, Lupa, I also interpreted that flashback with Flamme to mean her barrier grew along with the tree and a town was later built around it, until becoming this whole city. That may not be the case exactly, but I think it's a valid reading for anybody who doesn't have prior experience reading the source material.
Especially since plant-life magic and magic to protect it were part of the main specialties of Flamme. And we already saw her doing something similar to the tree above her house in the flashback in episode 4. I just think that the town was likely built in that location during Flamme's life and that she instructed the ancestor of the graf/lord of the town how to control some parts of the barrier (but not how to make the barrier).
The reason why Fern leaves, is because Stark said the town chief is in severe condition if there is no heal or cure the town chief might be gone, they might be defeating the demons there but they don't know how long it will take them to finish the demons.
fern and stark didn't want to fight because graf granat was still there and they didn't want to risk it. lugner and linie didn't want to fight because lugner was injured they could track them. both sides were unsure of the outcome of the fight.
Lugner: "Making people wait is an effective diplomatic tactic against humans as well." Granat: "... Are you fucking holding a grudge from that time I made you wait half an hour as a power play?" Lugner: "Of course not, I am a wild beast who has no emotions"
I just love how the english title is Frieren : Beyond journey's end which sounds calm and peaceful...and the japanese title is Sousou no Frieren which means Frieren the slayer 😂😂
Fern and Stark had to retreat. Fern may have dealt a great blow because it was a surprise attack, but any additional attacks would be blocked and any further fighting wouldn't just be a 1 and done. Stark was also carrying the Graf, so the best option was to retreat.
i absolutely love Frieren's solution to the magic thread. like yeah she probably COULD break it, but it's designed to be highly concentrated magic so it wouldnt be damaged by other magic spells. it would be a pain to break the thread itself. so she just slices through his arms reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "Don't put a super high-tech lock on a door made of paper" it doesnt matter how strong the magic thread is if i can just cut your damn hands off instead LMAO
The moment Frieren kills Draht is so powerful, it pulled me right into the world that they inhabit. Frieren is cute and lovable but she is a killer of demons at heart, and that scene showed that despite appearances she is ruthless and should be feared. It was a massive juxtaposition to what we'd seen so far and was further emphasised by her easy killing if Aura later on. It was a harsh tonal shift and i loved it.
Now i know what Fern feels like when Frieren says "Its just 10 years". Cause thats exactly what i feel when i have to wait for a week for these reactions
The really crazy thing about Frieren having the highest demon kill count in history, is that until around a century ago, Frieren barely made any actual moves. So that record started pretty much when she joined the hero's party.
Flamme love plant magic before she devoted herself to lethal works. That barrier spell is a variation to the spell she use to conceal her house and secret using plant.
Frieren the slayer is an incorrect translation. It's the title repeated verbatim, and the title is also translated... improperly. Beyond journeys end is thematically appropriate but a more literal translation is something like "Frieren at the Funeral"... whereas frierens epithet would translate more accurately to "Frieren of (the) Funeral". Sousou is sort of trickey because it doesn't have a direct translation and it has double meanings contextually. It can be "attendance at a funeral" but it can also imply that a person was the *cause* of the funeral. Tl;dr, Frieren buries people.
She just didn't want to deal with a protracted fight at the time. Linne would have intervened and drawn things out while Lugner healed and eventually joined the fight. Stark didn't want to risk Graff being killed in the fight since he's essentially helpless
I really love how the show manages to make the characters interesting. Even the lord sounds legit and smart. if this was from another show, they will make him one of those lords that abuse their power and fail to understand that the MC is on his side.
In that situation, the demons could easily kill the Graf while they were fighting so it wasn't a big deal to come back later after putting him in a safer place.
nah Lupa was right, the barrier was the one we see Flamme make. I imagine it grew as the plant grew. The town has the ability to control the barrier, but not create it. That would be way beyond them.
The reason he let him wait instead of torturing him wasn't out of benevolence. It's a known psychological torture technique. Making someone wait in silence by themselves stresses them out, and will make them fold more easily.

@@johnyshadowI prefer "Frieren the Gravedigger" myself.
frieren the reaper works better imo
So why is the title Frieren: beyond journey's end? It's like when they called it Attack on Titan instead of The Attack Titan.
@@Natsuke1104 A lot of animes have english names that aren't translations of its original name and are most like descriptions.
I think that was a tree. The city was built around it, within the barrier.
@@hybrid22003 Like what Lupa was trying to suggest before Roshi reactivated his gaslight-mode again.
(good choice for them to not fight there since the injured one is a blood mage and even if nearer to death, there is a lot of his blood around now and he is thus much more powerful)
2- They have to protect an injured person.
One of the hardest title drop
葬送のフリーレン, the kanji 葬送 (Sousou) now have 2 meanings, first is funeral, but from the pov of demons to Frieren it's Undertaker. 葬(bury) 送(send), so it's like Frieren said i'm sending y'all demons to grave 😂
The director of Frieren was the director of Bocchi the Rock! Both had ep. 8 end with a title drop. Sasuga Keiichirou Saitou.
@@TheHunterkiller96 Most likely not, because it wouldn't have been done by Flamme
@@scottsabado3669 That is what I thought I was implying?
Funny how frieren teaches fern teaches 'ordinary offensive magic' when in truth its avada kedavra for demons. XD
It's 'ordinary' for her
No, Fern could already use the "ordinary offensive magic" version of Zoltrack that human mages commonly use when Frieren met her.
@@sancturilloreso.. basically what the original commenter said then? what lol. An "ordinary offensive magic" taught by frieren.
@@grainnmertens You seem to lack reading comprehension.
13:38 " sousou no frieren" 🔥🔥🔥 goosebumps the real title of this show
Just realized that when Luger doesn't sense Fern, it''s a throwback to when Freinen found Fern on the cliff when she was younger and didn't sense her presense. The way this show makes everything go full circle is amazing.
The Frieren scene at the end of this episode gave me chills, its visual and sound were perfect, Frieren was so fucking badass ❤
Can't wait for ep 9.
13:24 the way she look down on demons was so good, it sent chill to my back
Remember that Frieren was Flamme’s best student (we hear this from Eisen).
5:35 “Frieren is that you?”
“No it’s not me”
The REAL Demon Slayer is here!! ❤❤
It's very hard to find faults in this anime. It is exceptional written and animated.

I’ll take the bullet for Lupa.
Cool
Can you imagine how raw Flamme was, achieving so much with so little time.
guys congrats on the 800k subs i'm so happy for y'all
Fun fact: "Frieren the Slayer" is a title drop.
Forget tanjiro, frieren is the REAL demon slayer

The reason why Fern leaves, is because Stark said the town chief is in severe condition if there is no heal or cure the town chief might be gone, they might be defeating the demons there but they don't know how long it will take them to finish the demons.
Power, Choso, Marie from Gen V and now Lugner. So many blood benders it’s cool to see
Best anime this season every episode gets better and better.
fern and stark didn't want to fight because graf granat was still there and they didn't want to risk it. lugner and linie didn't want to fight because lugner was injured they could track them. both sides were unsure of the outcome of the fight.
Lugner: "Making people wait is an effective diplomatic tactic against humans as well."
Granat: "... Are you fucking holding a grudge from that time I made you wait half an hour as a power play?"
Lugner: "Of course not, I am a wild beast who has no emotions"
Biggest name drop this season not gonna lie it was cold
I am excited to see her two students destroy the other two demons.
Stark was also carrying the Graf, so the best option was to retreat.
i absolutely love Frieren's solution to the magic thread. like yeah she probably COULD break it, but it's designed to be highly concentrated magic so it wouldnt be damaged by other magic spells.
it would be a pain to break the thread itself. so she just slices through his arms
reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "Don't put a super high-tech lock on a door made of paper"
it doesnt matter how strong the magic thread is if i can just cut your damn hands off instead LMAO
Nah cuz the wait for this vid almost killed me.
11:53 The Sync tho LOL 😂
Fern's overleveled but Frieren just got done on NG+10
love the "Im stronger than your boss"
Frieren with that pull up magic
The really crazy thing about Frieren having the highest demon kill count in history, is that until around a century ago, Frieren barely made any actual moves. So that record started pretty much when she joined the hero's party.
Fern nibbles on the burger: "This hamburger is tasty."
Half a second later: "This hamburger was tasty."
Flamme love plant magic before she devoted herself to lethal works. That barrier spell is a variation to the spell she use to conceal her house and secret using plant.
I'd still want an immortal life
yes the barrier grew from a single tree seedling to a whole city barrier over the thousand years
I thought this anime was elf to your eternity, but this episode showed that it's elf DOOM
Frieren won in next manga awards 2 years ago if y'all wanna know any manga that will get an anime adaptation in the future then
Frieren the slayer is an incorrect translation.
Fern really need to learn double tap so we wouldn't wait for another episode
She just didn't want to deal with a protracted fight at the time. Linne would have intervened and drawn things out while Lugner healed and eventually joined the fight. Stark didn't want to risk Graff being killed in the fight since he's essentially helpless
I really love how the show manages to make the characters interesting. Even the lord sounds legit and smart. if this was from another show, they will make him one of those lords that abuse their power and fail to understand that the MC is on his side.
Stark kills a dragon in less than a minute but still scared of some demons
hit bro with the “damn, that’s crazy bro.” 😂
this establishes the weakness of demons as a specie, they can be very full of themselves
When gou realise the show was always named Frieren the Slayer, but the build up took 8 episodes.
If I don't get the stone cold edits for her this week imma be mad
11:53 That *OH SHIIEET* ‼️ is epic XD
In that situation, the demons could easily kill the Graf while they were fighting so it wasn't a big deal to come back later after putting him in a safer place.
It'll be explained in the next episode but it was wise for them to escape.
Fern was too cold to Stark. No helping him cross the river, no drying him up, no making him fly over the wall😅
nah Lupa was right, the barrier was the one we see Flamme make.
Can't believe Frieren *disarmed* that demon 😎
11:53 perfectly sync reaction hahahahaha
4:50 The "man" is a Blood Bender.

This anime is called Sousou no Frieren in Japanese which means Freiren the Slayer. But I'm glad they changed the title in English, made that last scene look extra epic.
Actually you were cooking, the barrier WAS casted by Flamme. It was cast originally to protect that little flower, but it grew over a thousand years to protect the entire area of that city.
They said the grimoire was to control it, not to make it. They don't have the ability or Genius that Flamme had to create it and the entire point of mr "I hate geniuses" is that people like Flamme get a cheat code to skip all the years of studying demons do and accidently stumble upon some crazy impossible magic like that shield or the demon killing ray that Frieren uses.
when fern surprised attacked that demon, I was like " why didn't you go for the head?"
