This deserves every bit of attention. I was involved with an activist group when I learned about the Aborigines, and I must say it was an experience. I had no idea that the colonialism was still so present today. Your people deserve a platform, and to be spoken about/for by someone who can really make a difference

I'm a Sicilian born and raised in Sicily.
You know, till this day us Sicilian are often discriminated even from other Italians as well and it's always been so weird to me seeing a lot of foreigners (especially Americans) romanticize one of the things that ruined my people and my island: mafia. At the end of the day it's always been the cause of innocent Sicilians' discrimination all over the world, and yet today the romanticized concept of mafia is often seen in medias, movies, books...
Anyway, thank you Bailey for telling this story, unfortunately it brought much more pain to the future generations but I'm sure that things are slowly changing.
P.S.: I'd like to point out the fact that most of us Italians/Sicilians are white, so I'm not really sure there are actual "racial" slurs against us?? Or at least I wouldn't use this adjective to describe the insults and other forms of discrimination we may face outside of Sicily, it wouldn't be fair to all the pocs who are victims of actual racism.
I agree with your statement but if I could share my thoughts on racism and the colour of one's skins just because you are white this shouldn't be little the abuse your ancestry experienced it's still very much valid!
Racism isn't just skin colour, racial minority I.e the sicilia people in American at this time were a racial minority even as white people they faced racial prejudice due to the inherited differences as immigrants from a different country. The definition of racism isn't the most thought out from what I've read but as a white British person I'm lucky to never have experienced racism, but many European friends of mine who are white of skin have experienced racial abuse within my company I think because they share the same skin colour people don't see it for the racial abuse it is and even consider it 'banter'
I wouldn’t really call Italians white we are Latin I am a pure bred Italian and I get mistaken for South American or even half cast so yeah skin colour is not an issue if you’re not Anglo Saxon eg: German English etc you face immense racism especially here in Australia 🇦🇺 I still get told to go back to your own country lol 😂 I was born here but lived in Italy 🇮🇹 for 15 years both parents are Italian born and when they migrated from Italy to Australia 🇦🇺 they were kept in like concentration camps believe it or not my Nonno would tell me how they lived it was atrocious…..

Seriously the ground is mostly the ashes of burned bodies. Not even dirt. I heard they shut it down to the public cause of how haunted it is and people were getting "possessed" while on the island

I absolutely loved your comment about holding the media accountable. Having a degree in Journalism, I was taught to present impartial facts in articles, to allow the public to draw their own conclusions. Clearly, that has gone by the wayside. I literally quit a job because the editor told me to slant my story to suit their political agenda. I'm shocked and disheartened that today's so-called journalists hide behind the 1st amendment while cleverly using words to sway the court of public opinion. In our digital age, they have a responsibility to be better!

I studied Business Economics, Art History, Advertising & Marketing. I mean the renaissance was enough to show me how the whole system of society works and sadly still seems to work. The whole point of everything seems to be about manipulation of peoples emotional states (colour theory is literally attaching sentiment to people's unconcious or conscious emotional attachment to colour and imagery associated with colour) to basically get them to buy whatever you're selling or vote for you (buy *your* brand) Money money money. The colour of slavery is green. Accountability would be a great start.
I'm glad somebody is speaking about this!! My great-grandpa's family was treated HORRIBLY when they immigrated to the US from Sicily, they had to change their entire identities and it still wasn't enough. It's truly disturbing how many races/ethnicities have been abused in the US 😔

The U.S. tried to commit genocide on the Indigenous people who were living on the North American continent. Why would they be any nicer to immigrants? Millions died so they could do a replacement society with Europeans and immigrants from other countries in hopes that Native Americans would disappear and they could pretend they were settling the wilderness and doing God's work of Manifest Destiny that started with the Pilgrims 🙄

Thank you for covering this story, as a second generation Sicilian American it’s important to remember the people and the events that have long been forgotten. My grandparents wanted us to be “Americanized” so we wouldn’t have the same struggles they faced when they came here and I feel like a lot of my own culture was lost because of fear. It’s stories like this that remind me how blessed I am to live in a time where I can be proud to be Sicilian and not persecuted for it.
My grandparents were the same way. They never spoke Italian in the home because they came here and they were Americans. They said the reason they did it was because one of my aunts was hard of hearing and they didn’t want to confuse her between home and school (switching languages), but I think it was because they wanted to assimilate. It always made me sad, because I wish we had grown up with the language, I have always been very proud of my Italian heritage.
I’m s second generation Italian American and unfortunately my great grandfather was killed in New Orleans in that time period. I’m really glad that you covered this story as I feel like it’s really important more people know about this dark history.
I'm third generation Italian-American, and this was only a footnote in our history books. Thank you for sharing this story Bailey! I honestly think only those of Italian descent even know about it.

Yes. I’m a 3rd generation Sicilian American too. My great grandfather was off the boat on Ellis island. My grandfather was still being called a white n**ger trying to join a baseball team in 1941 and they refused to let him join the team for being Sicilian. There are still Italian slurs, and sadly even I have been called them before when being proud of my families roots.

I'm from Toronto. Half Italian half Portuguese. Both sides immigrated in the early 60s, both sides had shards of broken glass/rocks thrown at them. Even my parents as little kids and their relatives of the same age groups. They were working the hardest, DANGEROUS jobs with no instruction and little pay. My great uncle is missing a few fingers as a result of this. My family pretends none of it happened. My parents act like they didnt experience it, and it was just something in the past. Havung glass thrown at you on a regular basis for walking down the street is evil.

This is SERIOUSLY the most insightful thing I have ever heard an American utter.
South Park had an episode like that, except it was aliens watching Earth.
It's always been referred to as an experiment in democracy, all the way back to the founders. This points out why it's wrong to just ignore all the history books. Just because one paragraph is inaccurate doesn't mean the whole chapter is - despite what the greedy fear-mongering media wants you to believe today.

As a Sicilian American- I learned about this from my family at a young age and it was surprisingly taught in my freshman year of HS. It has always and will always sicken me. That’s also why I cannot for the life of me understand how my fellow Italian- Americans can treat black people and other people of color like they’re less than. Racism has no place with me and I have and will always call it out. I’ll never be part of the problem; only part of the solution.

My grandparents are Sicilian and I grew up in a loving family in California but when I moved to the Midwest I didn't realize how awful people could really be. My family was so close and loving and accepting that I never knew people were excluded for their skin color!

As a black poc, it really hurts my heart to see comments expressing a familiar sadness of not knowing how rough your ancestors had lived for you to get here. Learning about Emmitt Till and the Tulsa Massacre was really hard for me, because I couldn’t understand how these awful things happened, and nobody talked about them ever. Just want you to know that you are seen and understood 💜 Update: wow the responses. I love the solidarity. I agree with most of you. Let’s unearth all this ugliness so we can all heal. On another note I never see people talk my ancestors who were slaves. My family doesn’t talk about it much. My family in Ireland are fine now but they said they’d explain the slavery and royalty from our family line if I was ever able to visit. Blows my mind.
@SkyCop Wife same here! My mom’s parents (irish dad and Scottish mom actually) were super white and they worked in their family’s cotton fields growing up. My pa has had lots of spots removed of skin cancer from long hours out in the fields.

I grew up in and around Tulsa and they never EVER taught or spoke about it. I didn’t learn about it til I was 20 years old and I can’t believe none of us were told about things like that in our own city. We need to do better

I have an Italian cousin that married into my African American family. My mom made sure I knew about the history that we weren’t taught in school. She told me about the mass lynchings of Sicilians but she never gave me much detail. Then my cousin’s sister mentioned it on Facebook earlier this year. The story was so shocking to me that I actually thought of doing a documentary about it. Someone should! Thank you Bailey for doing this story because it is so important. When you said the part about giving Italians Columbus Day, some people feel the same about Juneteenth. A holiday does nothing to erase the atrocities committed toward human beings just because of their race.

About media’s responsibility:
I study Communication Science and we study the following theory: the Culture studies theory by Stuart Hall basically says that media portrays society’s cleavages and also helps with their deepening.
(My opinion) this happens because media is free but also is a money making machine. So the media supports their sponsors opinions or supports the public’s opinion.
All these people against italians will pick the newspaper which is “against” italians themselves.

It is sad but that’s the way it works.

I like your point - there are advertisers and sponsors which can guide the slant they take. And then added to that, they focus on the more sensationalized stories and then pump it up further to soak up any attention they can.

As a Communications major (Journalism, never worked the field b/c of my experience on college newspaper. Wouldn’t sell my soul to the highest bidder), I can agree it’s all about the Benjamin’s. However, media today is allowed to spew propaganda thanks to former President Obama allowing said propaganda. Today’s media carries the Narrative espoused by the Elite w/ facts derived from thin air (propaganda). As a FB lawyer admitted recently, their “fact checkers” are nothing more than opinion pieces; the same can be said for today’s “media”. Who owns your soul in media/news/communications - that’s the key today.
Thank you for covering this important piece of history. My grandfather was horribly discriminated growing up. When him and my grandmother (Sicilian, Italian and Irish) dated, her father (who was pure Irish) used to call my grandfather racial slurs bc he looked black. When my grandmother got pregnant when she was 18, her father cut contact with her and didn’t speak to her or my grandfather for a few years.
We still get heat for being sicilian to this day, but I am proud of my roots and proud of my family for holding their ground against all the hate.
Finally!! Someone covering Italian history. I feel like our ancestors get very overlooked by the popularity that is like; Jersey Shore and the Gotti brothers and like mobster lifestyle and that’s just not the case.
Ahhh!! I absolutely agree. I feel like our culture gets overlooked all of the time. I get many many of insults based off of our ancestors and history and hear wayyyyy too many sopranos jokes (I don’t totally mind them hahaha) but it is so great to finally be recognized in a different light for once

Sad how there’s still a lot of stereotyping with Italian immigrants today. My Nono has been in Australia for 50/60 years, he’s a big marshmallow, his greeting for his grandkids was to squeeze our cheeks while saying “che beeellllaaa”. I found out recently he came to Australia by accident, he got on the boat thinking it was going to AUSTRIA 😂😂 the man is iconic

Hello from Italy! So as I read from your comment we are still discriminated in the US? One day I will come to visit your country. It's one place (although huge) on my list of the countries I have not covered so far
@@mestesso9845 id say different areas of the country are better for Italians. I’m from Connecticut and Italians are all over CT, Massachusetts, and New York and not much discrimination exists for Italians. I’m currently living in Mississippi and previously lived in Texas and it’s a way different story down in the south. Also the Italian food is awful down here. My family is from Lucca and some stayed there while my grand parents moved to Boston! Hope I get to visit Italy one day!

My family “ Schiro” was one of these immigrants. We came over from Sicily to New Orleans in the 1800s. We ended up owning a horse carriage business. We are from Arminian decent that escaped from the Ottomans to Sicily. There is so much of our history in New Orleans. My great grandma was born there in 1888 and died in 1980 something. It’s crazy to wonder how this effected my family.

media's way of keeping us divided and them full of stories
As an italian girl and specifically sicilian, you have no idea how much a video covering this particular topic means to me, especially since it's you who made it (I've never commented until now but I'm a big fan of your videos 💖). My grandma told me plenty about her father returning to sicily for fear of being targeted by these people (decades after) and it really broke my heart to hear it. My grandfather told me this was why many of our relatives went back up to Chicago to live after seeing the way most Italians were being treated in New Orleans.

@@federicamelito8744 Yes, sadly. This was in the late 1800s - early 1900s. I’d say through 1940 at least. When immigration was at its highest New Orleans was the place to be. Jobs, new lives, etc. that’s what my grandfather said everyone was looking for. Sadly, some of the New Orleans natives weren’t open to immigrants and treated Italians and Irish very poorly. We learn “Louisiana History” here, but they definitely don’t tell all of these horror stories.
It boggles my brain that this Irish-descendant man was so hateful to Italian immigrants when the Irish immigrants were ostracized just as badly during the 1840s (probably his father experience this). You think he would be understanding. I never heard of this story at all, thanks for sharing.
He was mixing with Italians to get his $. So it was a profit reason for tolerating newcomers until it became a conflict with different groups of the same immigrants that he was in the middle of. Typical response of narrow minds is to vilify anyone who gets in their way with their cultural or genetic differences brought to the front as the reason to get others to see "other" and thus create hate for a whole group of people(a form of exclusion and justification for outrageous behaviors towards that group).

It’s a chain of mistreatment. “If I treat this group worse than how I’m being treated, maybe I’ll be seen as higher up in the oppressors’ eyes”.

There's a reason for that... Italians are considered white... and in school whites can Never, and I mean Never seem as a victim group in schools... trying to argue it when you're an adult is really hard because no one else knows about it and they will continually deny that it ever happened
@V P that's my point, it apparently is completely okay to discriminate against someone's color as long as the color is white... not caring about anything else other than color is the issues Italians, and any other Europeans have today... it makes it completely obvious how hypocritical alot of people are... my sister inlaw (brothers wife) is Hungarian... and if you saw her... she's mayonnaise white... she gets treated the same way as any other white person... the funny part... she had to go through the same immigration, and discrimination any of the people from South of the boarder do in North America... and because of her skin tone people say that her ancestors owned black slaves...

Sicilian 1st generation here. Thank you for this. My parents experienced a ton of racism in this country, even from other Italians (because northern Italians think they are better than Sicilians because of our Moorish blood...more racism) I can't even tell you how many times I have been asked or accused of mafia involvement and worse. Thank you so much for this. Stories like this all over, my auntie married an Irish man and passed herself as "white", denied us and left us. Broke my moms heart.

@@elisa.r. Yeah white is a race, not an ethnicity. I'm a WHITE hispanic, and italians are generally white as well. I think nowadays when people say "stop being so white" they mean a stereotypical very american white person... Rather than skin color.

I’m a second generation Italian-American on both sides and one of my grandpas was from Sicily so I’m so happy that someone finally covered this case! I didn’t even know about it until about a year or two ago.
People forget the horrible things that happened to Italian immigrants back in the day (and some things even still today). It’s crazy how so many different groups have been treated horribly in this country and we don’t even learn about half of them.
@SkyCop Wife As this video focuses on Italians, that is why my comment also focuses on Italians. Like I said, almost all immigrant groups faced many atrocities when coming to this country and our history books do not teach us half of them (and specifically this story that this video is focused on).
This video is allowing people, like me, of Italian decent to come together and speak about things that have happened to our particular group. No one is taking away from the terrible things that happened to other groups. No one is arguing that one group had it worse than another. Please don’t come on here and try to invalidate things that happened to Italians because the Irish also faced atrocities when coming to this country. Almost all groups had it bad and all of the stories deserve to be told.

As a Sicilian descendent who is from Louisiana, and my family who were from New Orleans, we thank you for bringing this story to light. Our family speaks of many tragedies that took place in the French Quarter.
I’m born & raised in New Orleans. Still live here and I don’t ever remember learning about this in school. I’m so happy about what Bailey is doing with these stories. She’s bringing so much to light.
@@joysambition Absolutely! Many of my ancestors are from New Orleans born and raised, with some of the earlier ones being Sicilian immigrants. This didn’t only happen to Italians, but the Irish as well as that is my grandmothers side of the family. I remember the horrible stories my great grandparents and grandparents would tell us of growing up in the early 1900s. My mom and dad were both born and raised there but my mom moved closer to Baton Rouge after my father died when I was 7 months old.

New Orleans native here. I’m not sure if any locals ever went to the wax museum in the French Quarter when they were growing up. (It’s closed now) It was all about New Orleans history. We use to go there on field trips. They had an exhibit about this.

It's funny, Sicilians are a group that are still allowed to be openly stereotyped and have slurs thrown at them and it's no problem. If someone black, for example were called the same slurs I've been called in the workplace and in school, they would be fired.

all of my grandparents immigrated from italy and sicily during the 1930s and 40s and the stories ive heard about their time when they first got to the states is heartbreaking. they refused to talk about it when i was younger but as i got older, they started to talk about it more. it’s a big reason both of my parents were never taught how to speak sicilian or italian while they were growing up.

Interesting side note, concerning racism and Italians. I live in coal country. When coal camps were a thing, they were often segregated. Most of the white people lived together, African Americans would be in another "camp" section, and Italians often had their own "camp"as well. In the more rural areas of coal country, even though "coal camps" aren't a thing anymore. The housing community, didn't evolve. Coal camp houses, were simply remodeled or demolished, and a new house was put in the same spot. The "camp" names, or "street names" are still the same. Our grandparents will say things like, "She grew up in the Italian camp." You know exactly where that person grew up at. It's amazing how many people aren't taught, or are aware that Italians have been so discriminated against. I've learned so much from Bailey, and simply love that she's putting out quality content.

As a New Orleans native I can tell you the city is full of Dark History. We have a lot of museums here and some try to tell the truth but you have to go to learn it. My dad is Italian and my mom is Irish. My mom tells me that her grandmother was so upset that she was marring an Italian. Plus I think I know the Italian slur. I’ve heard it a lot growing up.

Thank you for speaking about this- people don’t believe me when I tell them this story. The struggle of Italian immigrants is completely overshadowed by the mafia trope pushed out by Hollywood. It is very hurtful and I’m glad this is being heard on a bigger scale.
RIGHT. Not to mention the fact that aside from the mafia, only the stories of super white northern italians get told, so everyone thinks we all had it easy. No one wants to mention how northern italian immigrants distanced themselves from us and spread harmful propaganda. Or how many of us were "colored" until the 1950s. Or anything really--probably partially thanks to the "reunification" of Italy that caused the diaspora of many of our ancestors. Generational trauma doesn't just go away because history was rewritten.
@@ashbatz totally agree. How easily people forget and prefer to completely rewrite history. The issues with the north and south in Italy are still on going. I remember hearing a news anchor in Italy say that there were more Covid cases in the north than in the the south bc northerns are always working- implying those from the south are lazy. It was just gross.

Ive never been to Italy but my family is Sicilian (my grandfather was 1st generation born in America) and my great-grandfather dealt with so much coming to America. And to this day - even though I’ve never been there, I’m still treated differently. The constant mafia comments are infuriating.
I never heard of this before. My nono and nona had to go through so much coming to this country. Another thing not often talked about is the fact that during the second world war, many Canadian Italians were sent off to internment camps or heavily surveilled by the RCMP. Sad part of history

Even on what we are seeing in the news about the virus and how anyone that doesn't go along with the media's "guidelines" are automatically pushed to the side and written off as "fake news" just because someone higher up says so. Think whatever you feel, but that's one huge example I can think of.
Exactly!! We have freedom of speech but you can still be sued for deformation of character. I definitely think the media should be held accountable as well! Feel free to say whatever they want but be prepared for other lawsuits that prohibit saying disgusting, misinformed things!
Hello Bailey! My maternal grandparents moved to Canada from southern Italy in the 40s and 50s. Unfortunately, my nonni and my Italian family experienced extreme prejudice and racism from people due to their Italian blood. No one talks about how horribly Italians were treated, and now, the Italian culture and food has become a normal part of people's lives in North America. I am Canadian, and I never heard about this before! Thank you for telling the stories of people who are overlooked by history. The downtrodden and the victims of all of your videos deserve to be known!

yes my great Papa would bring my little Irish great grandma with him into all the Italian establishments. A few people said comments here or there under their breath about her but would never say it to his face. I’m pretty sure it’s cause he was mob affiliated and a Chicago cop.

My great grandparents immigrated from Italy and settled in a city outside of Philadelphia. The city was mostly Irish and my grandmother would get made fun of and called names. She also went to a mostly Irish school. She said when she was a kid, all she ever wanted to be was Irish. In the household they spoke only Italian and learned English off of the television. It had to be so hard :(

I'm just watching this episode & this explains so much about Louisiana. My estranged biological father used to remind me that there were a lot of powerful people - he is from Louisiana. There was also talk of a Louisiana mafia when I was a kid, but I didn't understand what that meant or why it was even being discussed. Side note, one of my mother's sisters married a Sicilian man who became a detective. I guess this all explains some tensions within the family back then. It's crazy what propaganda & media frenzies can unfortunately help to create. Thank you for all you do! Keep shining!
I’m an Italian-Canadian, my family that came in the 50s and 60s were treated like second class citizens. My cousins were attacked by random people on the streets, the police would split up any Italians that were together. My grandparents were ostracized in school and constantly called names, they lost job opportunities, etc. There’s some kind of discrimination for every group, even white groups like the Irish, Slavic, or Italians. Makes me lose hope in humanity

Also, like other commenters here, I thank you for sharing this in hopes of educating people. Italians were the hated immigrants at the time and suffered much discrimination; my parents, as well. Funny how later on Italian singers and actors and Italian food were beloved by all. People are xenophobic, yet very fickle.
Right because of people like the ones who have minds of their of their own. Ofcourse the ones that have guts to go after people to give them grief, like today, are indoctrinated and act like sheep bcuz they cant make their own decisions.
I’m English and we have an awful, long, and sadly ongoing history of treating immigrant groups terribly… but I’m still shocked by some of these dark history episodes. Definitely not over the Japanese concentration camps.

I WOULD LOVEEE TO SEE YOU DO A DARK HISTORY SESSION ABOUT Centralia pennsylvania, Its population has declined from 1,000 in 1980 to 5 residents in 2017 because a coal mine fire has been burning beneath the borough since 1962.
What baffles me and hard to understand is that all people from the United States ARE immigrants to this land and they fight among each other who deserves to be here and who isn't. People get over yourselves, live and let live and get down on your knees and ask for forgiveness everyday b/c ALL OF US are sinners one way or another. Ask yourself what have you done in your life that doesn't deserve scrutiny. STOP THE HATE!

Pretty much the same as in Australia. Seems like nearly every country needs to own their bit, in taking over land that was already occupied by it's indigenous people.
But we aren't responsible for what our ancestors did. But we certainly can acknowledge and own it..
