Cleopatra is extremely fascinating. She was not just a pharaoh. She was a mathematician, scientist, created makeup (used charcoal for eyeliner for medical reasons and taught her people about the safe uses of charcoal as eye makeup) She was thought as a magical beauty BUT no one actually knows what she even looks like because when Augustus won the war, he made it a point to erase her image completely which included removing coins that had her face on them. She was even a great leader in war and fought in the front lines with her army. Insane!! ❤
She was indeed incredible - can you imagine this fierce woman at the front line of an Egyptian army? The Romans, professional as they were, still might have been a bit freaked out! Of course, because we can't have anything nice, Rome took Egypt from her - which, figures.
This felt so satisfying, Bailey standing up for fellow women. it’s what I have noticed as well in private and professional life that women get judged more harshly on things. It’s ridiculous.
Bailey, you should do a Dark History about the history of powerful female pirates like Grace O'Malley, Ann Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao, and Rachel Wall and how men tried to erase their stories from history. Can't have badass women running the world, after all.🙄

This reminds me of when a man cheats, the woman goes after the other girl and not her man (vice versa for men) lol. I'm sick of deep double standards...whether this is turning the cheek to misbehaving males or ignoring male abuse victims...it goes both ways.
It’s something so deeply ingrained in women as well. I remember being so mad at the girl that my ex cheated with but not as angry at him. I hate that we all have some level of internalised misogyny
I think there's a feeling of "sisterhood" where you feel betrayed that another woman could do that to you. It's totally misplaced, but that's the only thing I can think of that makes sense.
Bailey PLEASE do a series! Of all the Dark Histories (Herstories?), I love this one best. I am your 67 year old geriatric fangirl and your videos brighten my day!🥰
Family and I watched that Janet documentary series that recently came out and the thing that was the saddest about that incident was that she wasn’t angry at Justin and she didn’t want him to receive any backlash or hate so she never said anything and supported him going to award shows when she was banned. Even recently when people were calling him out on it she posted a video saying that she forgave him and that they’re friends. She was too kind, and just for media to shame and cancel her. Bless her heart and soul. 💔
So, my favorite part is that when "nipplegate" happened everyone lost their minds and janet was destroyed. Yet, nobody complained about the thousands of instant replays on the news and entertainment outlets for the entire week following.
And it's the whole reason why this very video platform even exists today! The original creators of RUclips were trying unsuccessfully to find these images of Janet online. So they built RUclips. Amazing how often titillation motivates technological developments
Okay so I knew about Cleopatra, Catherine (especially since watching The Great and being inspired to read all about Catherine), and Yoko but I have never heard of Jackie. Jackie was a badass. Thanks Bailey, I don't watch baseball so I don't think that I would have ever heard of her if it wasn't for your video.
You should really do an episode about Cecilia Payne and the women who mapped the stars. Williamina Flemming, Antonia Maury, Annie Jump Cannon, and Henrietta Leavitt. They all made incredible leaps and discoveries in astronomy and never got recognition for their works during their lifetimes. Many of them still aren't credited for their discoveries in scientific forums. It's really tragic.
I can't imagine anyone calling Yoko Ono mainstream! But I had never heard of Jackie; that says everything. Striking out Ruth and Gehrig in succession at 17! Talk about erasure. Thank you for a spicy and informative DH session, and tell Joan her costumes were awesome.
I love how “they” call women “delicate” yet it’s the men that can’t handle losing to a woman or a woman being a better leader. I’ve had a guy tell me woman can’t be in charge of the country or world because we do everything off emotions. 🤦🏻♀️ I have no problem talking about all the bad anyone does but I can’t and won’t believe someone just because they are a woman. I need as much proof from women and I want from men to believe them.
Tell him that Australia and Germany have lady leaders. And when Australia had the attack on a Synagogue that killed people, she immediately banned all assault rifles of any kind! She didn't have to go through a bunch of grumpy old men who refuse to give up their power to do it either! We do a much better job than they do!
I feel that men, specifically those in positions of power tend to be far more emotional than most women I know. It’s almost though like they don’t count things like anger, jealousy, and those kinds of emotions as actual emotions if you are aggressive when you have them. Which to me is far more dangerous for a leader to be than anyone on their period ever could be.

My heart broke and still breaks for Julian, John's rejected son. At one time he confided in Paul- this kid was in so much pain because of his father and Yoko, that Paul wrote a song for Julian. It was called Hey, Jude. Imagine a child being rejected andshunned by the one person who was supposed to nurture, love and care for him. ❤️Julian❤️

Audrey Hepburn, above all, was a lovely person, a great lady, who underwent great hardship but never stopped being great to people. And it was not, I think, false, like many famous people who have a great reputation.
Loved this! I know you already covered an Egyptian pharaoh but before Cleo there was another really famous female pharaoh (and the first official female pharaoh) named Hatshepsut, she presented herself in a masculine way in paintings and statues in order to maintain the authority given to pharoahs (who were all male before her), her rule was one of the most prosperous in their entire history, and the successor she had been gearing up to leave things to ended up trying to erase her from history by smashing temples and statues of hers, but it didn't work because we still know about her today. Before her there were queens who ruled Egypt like Nefertiti but Hatshepsut was the first to assume the title of pharaoh. She's really cool and I'd recommend anyone who's interested in Cleo to check her out! (Not me calling her Cleo as if she's my bestie 💀)
Hatshepsut wasn’t the first female pharaoh. And Nefertiti came after her. And while her successor, or more likely her successor’s successor, did attack her monuments and images, that was just increase his own legitimacy for ruling. It wasn’t anything malicious.
When I was a kid back in mid 70s, I was the first girl to play on in all-boys league. I was 10 and loved playing baseball. But they would not let play beyond little league. @@MF-Dog-Mom yeah, when I went through the Air Force in late 80s, it was a no go for anything other than transport planes, I wanted to fly the fast stuff. I can guarantee the new Top Gun movie coming out will not show women flying the jets, even though they can now.

Speaking of women, the women of the 1916 rising in Ireland are the underrated hero’s, and not just in 1916 or the troubles, but the women who tried to pass on Irish culture to their children while risking death.
Same with the greek women who played a central part in 1940 greek resistance against nazis in world war 2, during the years of german occupation of greece. Noone talks about them, noone knows about them. Sacrifice without recognition.

Most everyone knows the play Hamilton. Eliza is portrayed as a home wife and can't possibly compare to Angelica when it comes to beauty, social circles, or intelligence. Fun fact, the line about the letters Hamilton wrote for the federalist papers...a significant portion of them were written in Eliza's hand writing and it was said that she was given credit for Alexander's status in treasury, as she was behind the scenes organizing and taking on large portions of that responsibility.
THIS is exactly what we are supposed to be doing right now. Uncovering the deception around these matters. Learning the truth. Bringing light and justice to the darkness that has surrounded us throughout history. My heart bleeds for these women. Thank you so much for this, Bailey. You have chosen a most honorable profession. ♥
There is a missing girl, 26 years old, and she was missing in a very strange way. When her mother went to look for her, the policemen and the FBI were not cooperative, on the contrary, they wanted to hide the evidence, and even the lawyers were rejecting this case, and they also found the remains of the bones of this girl, but not complete. The skull was separated from the spine, and they did not find the whole bones, and the details of the story are very shocking. We want justice for this girl, Jawaher Al-Hajji.
If you dont know, you should really look into the story of Zheng Yi Sao, she was the most successful pirate ever recorded and was brutal! Great story a lot of people dont know
Ancient Egypt is my guilty pleasure I constantly watch documentaries on ancient Egypt. You could do so many dark history episodes on ancient Egypt cause there are so many cool things about ancient civilizations
Same. I actually named the feral mama cat that had kittens under my deck Cleopatra (aka Cleo) because she is a great leader and keeps all of the males in line. They all also love her. She just happens to be quite a beautiful Manx cat, too. Even though I caught her and got her spayed, she's still the ruler of this street. Osiris and Horus (as well as the others) know their place.
If not for Bailey, I'd have always thought that Cleopatra was just another beautiful women who was craved by men because that's all that's there in the books I've read about Cleopatra
She wasn't even an especially "beautiful" woman per se, she's just been written that way in history because people couldn't fathom that her intellect and charisma were what influenced so many important men and that the factor of ethereal beauty thus HAD to have been what caused it
I learned about Cleopatra from other people, first by the princess diary series I read as a kid and then from RUclips channels such as overly sarcastic. Though I like how Bailey talks about the topic I found it strange she didn’t mention that Cleopatra actually killed herself because Octavian planned it humiliate her and she didn’t want to give him that satisfaction. One of the ways Octavian wrote slander against Cleopatra was commissioning Virgil to write The Aeneid.
I’m only five minutes in, and thank you for doing this video. Just bringing to light the example of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake it was perfect. Sad part is is that when will society stop blaming women for men’s actions?

Well , I’m sorry to hear that but it’s not like that here where I come from and women are applauded just like men would be . Hope It changes though and gets better for women .
You're likely smarter than them to even land a job like that being female just saying. In fact, it's less intelligent of the men to say barbaric things like that.
And yet statistics show women are better surgeons, because their patients all receive the same level of care. Men actually are more likely to mis perform during surgery on women or even more likely to let women patients die.
Another woman that doesn’t get enough credit is Hilma af Klint! She was the original abstract artist, a few years before Vassily Kandinsky and Mondrian (who receive all the credit for abstraction). I learned about this from my female art professors!
I LOVE her work, speaking of female artists that don't get enough recognition - Leonard Carrington, she was labeled as a surrealist but she's so much more than that. I swear her art is sigils.
Thank you for this video, Bailey. I really hated how Justin got off scotfree, meanwhile Janet Jackson had to deal with all the backlash. He never even stood up for her and remained silent like the coward he is. It made me look at him differently.
BAILEY please make this a series!! You need a day where you just talk about one woman's story or even a few like you did here, especially the ones who have been diluted throughout history! I love the way you said “what an entrance” at the beginning. Your eyes were glittering with admiration. It seemed like you really wanted to talk about those woman and that they were inspiring to you. Talk about things that make you happy Bailey!
It's ironic that women would be described as "too delicate" to play a sport when in reality the only thing that was too delicate was the ego of a man. I think it is getting better because women don't have to rely on what men decide to tell the world about them - we have social media and we can report on our own awesomeness and tell the stories of our fellow strong women.
Since im a 2000's kid i never familiarized myself with the Beatles and the whole Yoko Ono drama, i had always heard of people criticizing her but never understood why but also didnt bother to look it up myself. I remember one time being in a drive thru at in n out and I was sitting behind this car with some man driving it and it was plastered in Beatles tribute bumper stickers. Which wouldn’t be weird, except that he very specifically had a bumper sticker that was anti-Yoko (I think it was like her name with a crossed out circle over it or something) and directly below that was a sticker that had a quote from the notoriously post-Beatles era John Lennon song “Imagine”. The irony was too painful. The amount of hate Yoko gets from people who are obsessed with John Lennon and his hippy worldview, it makes no sense.

Amen Bailey, amen! I literally just saw a video yesterday titled something like, Cleopatra as one of the most evil queens in history. I clicked on it quizzically because I could think of worse female rulers and men by the dozens. I was left with more respect for her after watching than before and never once did I think she was "evil". It all comes down to women trying to survive (without a man) pictured as evil ie think back to Lilith and Eve. For wanting to have a choice in their lives. I can't believe history is so biased. I used to think history was a matter-of-fact, but in reality it's just the story written by those in power who wish to keep that power.

It's interesting hearing your perspective on Yoko. It's obvious how much John Loved Yoko! He Adored Her. That's All that matters. The music that she and Sean inspired was Beautiful. Double Fantasy is a wonderful Album. I never understood all the negative stories and press about her. Understand, I was a Senior in High School when Double Fantasy came out. I grew up with The Beatles. We weren't meant to know the Real Yoko. I admire her for standing her ground and doing right by his Memory. I bet she's a pretty Cool Lady.
I could be wrong but part of the Yoko hate might have to do with her being Asian. People would rather blame her for the Beatles break-up than creative differences between band members.
I love your channel, I've been following since COVID started when you were just doing MMMM. I only have ONE suggestion- do NOT blame teachers for not being able to teach you these things. I am a teacher and trust me, I wish nothing more than to have awesome discussions and research projects that report like you do- FACTS. However, the curriculum is dictated to us. It is hard, so hard to have any creative freedom. Make a video about it. About how education ended up in the dumpster in America. We didn't teach you these things because we aren't allowed to. I would love to see a video told by you in which you explain how we ended up with the pipeline system. How education policy is more corrupt than many people imagine.
I'm also an educator and I agree. Research educational figures throughout history, court cases, and the origins of laws around education and you'll see how we ended up where we are. Spoiler alert: we are not trying to teach controversial topics to your 5-year-old.
I had a friend who was a teacher in Guatemala. Same thing. He actually deviated from the curriculum, and when they finally caught him, they fired him. He just refused to conform at that point. Now he’s broke and so desperate, to the point that we had a problem that ended our friendship 12 years ago, yet, he just wrote me a few weeks ago, without even asking how I was or apologizing for what he did; just to ask me for $200. It must be rock bottom for him to ask me of all people.
She's still a really awful person though. She has absolutely erased John's eldest son even going as far as to sell off all of John's guitars that she didn't want to keep rather than gift any of them to Julian, Julian then had to buy back anything that he wanted to keep from his father. And not for cheap I might add.
@@kiki29073 that's valid. I definitely care why the beatles broke up because they're my favourite band so I like to know about them but in the grand scheme of things if she was the true cause of the break up that wouldn't be the worst thing she's done. The universe as we know it was mapped by a group of women! They were known as "The Harvard observatory computers". The director quoted his maid could do better then some of the scientists on his team, hence how the group was started.

My mom is 65 and I’m getting her into Bailey! She loves these videos!

@@christinedelman887 so...what has that got to do with anything?
You should really do an episode about Cecilia Payne and the women who mapped the stars. Williamina Flemming, Antonia Maury, Annie Jump Cannon, and Henrietta Leavitt. They all made incredible leaps and discoveries in astronomy and never got recognition for their works during their lifetimes. Many of them still aren't credited for their discoveries in scientific forums. It's really tragic.
I don't know these names and I would like to know them!
I have no problem talking about all the bad anyone does but I can’t and won’t believe someone just because they are a woman. I need as much proof from women and I want from men to believe them.
ExClty!!!! Men are emotional choosing to stay in anger and resentment themselves!
Many countries have had woman leaders and have had or still have president and prime minister that are women.

I simply can't stand her! She can't sing, and she was a horrible influence on Jon.
Yoko was and is yucko. Ask Paul, Yoko played a big role in the Beatles breakup. Plus, she kept John from his first son Julian.
❤️Julian❤️
i had a history teacher ask “who thinks yoko broke up the beatles?” and i shook my head and she challenged me on it and i said i just think people blame her and it’s misogynistic. professor was embarrassed and said she was just kidding
Right? As if someone who wasn't even in the band had more control over the band than the actual members did.
Tbh I don't really like the Beatles, but I always thought John brought her in as an honorary member, she wanted more control after being on a song and her bad singing and bad ideas broke them up. At least that's the rumor I've always heard floating around, I was never sure how true it was.

Facts!

That would never happen to a charismatic male leader. No matter what she did, she couldn't win.
Same here🖤🙏💯
She wasn't even an especially "beautiful" woman per se, she's just been written that way in history because people couldn't fathom that her intellect and charisma were what influenced so many important men and that the factor of ethereal beauty thus HAD to have been what caused it
I learned about Cleopatra from other people, first by the princess diary series I read as a kid and then from RUclips channels such as overly sarcastic. Though I like how Bailey talks about the topic I found it strange she didn’t mention that Cleopatra actually killed herself because Octavian planned it humiliate her and she didn’t want to give him that satisfaction. It's ironic that women would be described as "too delicate" to play a sport when in reality the only thing that was too delicate was the ego of a man. I was mostly shocked to learn she had a daughter from a previous marriage! Does anyone know what happened to her?
@@lorenagiuria5798 she was kidnapped by her father, & Yoko didn't see her for many years.
Thats messed up
I'm also an educator and I agree.
That is a GREAT idea! It's the dark history of why and how we don't learn dark history. Bailey definitely needs to do this one!
And if you go off book at all upon risk parents retaliation, or getting fired.
Thank you for always being our rock on mon/thurs. Bailey makes our day ammirite
I enjoy history more because of you Bailey! 🖤
Soo I think Joan needs to have matching robes with bailey
Oh Yoko Ono’s story is making me cry. She’s such an amazing artist and still is to this day. But she did get such bad unfair press it’s so unfair.
She's still a really awful person though. She has absolutely erased John's eldest son even going as far as to sell off all of John's guitars that she didn't want to keep rather than gift any of them to Julian, Julian then had to buy back anything that he wanted to keep from his father. And not for cheap I might add.
I never like Yoko myself. Not because of Lennon but, because of her own actions. I could care less about why the Beatles broke up.
@@kiki29073 that's valid. I definitely care why the beatles broke up because they're my favourite band so I like to know about them but in the grand scheme of things if she was the true cause of the break up that wouldn't be the worst thing she's done. I dislike her more because of her actions towards Julian and his mother.
@@kiki29073 It's couldn't care less.
@@louuanneeestrewp6189 I was wondering how Yoko Ono made the roster when there were so many outstanding women, Yoko was a subpar artist, AND a genuinely nasty person.
Joan TOTALLY brought her A Game today! Looking fly, Joan. 🪶
I think we need close ups of Joan at the intro so we can appreciate her attire 👏👏👏
And maybe a lil pictorial of all her outfits so far
Our girl Joan is just the sassiest! Gotta love her! And oh my, I love Bailey's Dark History. So interesting, so very well told and with so much passion for those history did wrong!
Yes please make this a series!! I’d love to hear about more women who society has hushed or down played!! Thanks Bailey and team- amazing as always!! 💖
The universe as we know it was mapped by a group of women! They were known as "The Harvard observatory computers". The director quoted his maid could do better then some of the scientists on his team, hence how the group was started.
Sadly those women were basically used. Edward Pickering Employing woman staffers was an economic decision rather than an ethical one, as a woman could be hired at 25 to 50 cents per hour - half of what a man would have to be paid.
@@chesterbrooks3606 Absolutely they were used. But they did make a big statement in Science. Along with many other women we've washed from our history books.
BAILEY IS GONNA TALK ABOUT CLEOPATRA?!?!? Magnificent!! Love you lady!!!
As a longtime podcast listener…I thought Joan was a living crow! Hahahaha she’s still awesome and so are you Bailey!
This both fascinated and infuriated me,,, how great was Catherine, they could do with her now, men have always been terrified of women and our strength,,, we still have along way to go,
As usual brilliantly told Bailey ❤️🇮🇪
just another fun fact, we also call c-sections "cesarian" cause it began as a rule under Caesar to cut the baby out of the mothers that were gonna die for certain, but.I did not know his own son was called also Caesarian
Yes! It’s because this was the first birth this way
Not a rule. His son was delivered this way. That's why it's called caesarian section.
Took long time for successful c sections. Usually was only done once the mom died in labor by midwives even.
Cesarian section came long after Caesar and had nothing to do with him nor his son by Cleopatra. The child’s name Caesarion was Greek for “little Caesar “, while caesarian section comes from a Latin word for cutting.
@@cosmicsquirrel7642 That’s not why and he wasn’t born that way.
Ur right ...it is gross...how women are portrayed and ignored for their accomplishments!! I had only heard really negative stuff about Yoko ono🖤so sad!!!! I looove this series Bailey!!! Thank you🖤btw ur hair looks gorgeous..bug love to all x
I would love a series of this. Highlighting great women of history

Peace be upon you. There is a mother who lost her
26-year-old daughter, Jawaher al-Haji, and her face
was killed. She found only 5% of her daughter's
bones with her head separated from her body. The
police did not make any effort to help her and bring
the crime to public opinion in America. Listen to
her story and events. Lawyers and the FBI refuse to
help her. Help her to investigate her case and delve
into the details of the case. Please, please, please,
and treat her with all humanity
Did a brief reading on the case. Very sad. I hope justice is served for this beautiful young lady and her family
Catherine's "strategic alliance with Prussia" was nothing more than a plot to make Poland disappear from the maps, which sadly worked. "Creating Poland's borders" was a really weird way to describe the partitions of Poland.
Exactly, thank you for this. It is like saying Russia is creating now the boarders of Ukraine...
Very much faux pas!
Exactly what I wanted to write.
@@wolfcat6570 Exactly! It's such a bad time to be making a video about a ruler who tried to wipe out Polish culture and language.
Yeah I was like uuuuhhm? Hope this becomes more visible so people will see it.
Yes! It sounded like Poland was okey with all of that and that's far away from truth. Maybe she was great for Russia but she also destroyed Poland, not "create borders for us".
I've never even heard of Jackie Mitchell 💔 And thank you for standing up for all these Brave Women ❤️
On the note of celopatra/Egypt. You should do a dark history on 'hatshepsut' she's a phaoret, with a whole backstory 😍
I laughed out loud with Little Ceasar. I couldn't keep a straight face XD
I have always felt women have all the right to be included in baseball and the fact I have never heard of Jackie truly upsets me
Yes!! It's Bailey therapy time!! I've looked forward to this all week!!
I wait for Dark History every Thursday to brighten my day! Bailey, you make this series Brilliant!!! I have been a Subscriber for day 1! Sending Love ❤️ 😍
Do you text the same thing every week just curious because I think I seen this a few times before?
