As a historian I feel so thrilled that formats like this is reaching mass audience. History is not just dates, battles, elections but also microscopic view to the everyday life, cultural context that impacts us till this day. As an European I would love to hear more international stories, but I get it - target audience is US. Keep it up! 👌

I was at one of these places in 2010. I was 15. After I got out, I ran away from home in 2011 and came to Los Angeles from the state of Texas. I had nothing but time to think about the person and woman I wanted to be. I was able to start my transition and hormones and now I'm a 26 year old trans woman. No Matter what I refused to let my family and these people break me. I couldn't change. I was meant to be a woman and I had to fight to be the woman I am today

When my mom suggested I go to "therapy" so I don't have to live as a trans person, and so I could accept the gender I was born with, I had to try really hard not to get upset with her because I know she doesn't know what she's doing and the damage it would cause me. I'm an adult now and I don't live with my parents. This is exactly why I didn't come out to them until I was financially stable. I tried everything for years to change who I am on my own, so I'm very sure that no amount of therapy or convincing could make me what they want.

For real though a lot of "Christian" peer groups think like these people that agree with conversion therapy and it's scary. I remember going through high school (Catholic High school) and staying in the closet for two major reasons; the school acted like bullying towards out or flamboyant students didn't happen since the teachers didn't like the out or flamboyant students for living their truth, and two the school included conversion therapy hotlines among the lists of "youth help lines" they gave us so people where legit afraid they'd end up in one of those places. There is a major sense of almost culture shock when you go from these over conservative high schools into post secondary schools where all of a sudden you have advocacy groups and visibility everywhere.

This was beautifully done and couldn't have been done at a more perfect time. Sadly our local highschool is having students of faith protest a mural they want taken down that represents equality for all. We are protesting to show support to the lgbtq+ students tomorrow and I have posted this video on every post I find about our situation.

Find a local Presbyterian USA church. Call and ask if they can help. Not all Christian groups support this discrimination.

After clicking on the Trevor Project while listening to this episode my heart shattered because the FIRST THING on their website are instructions on how to exit the website quickly and erase the site from the history. I pray to anything that'll listen that one day it won't have to be like this for ANYONE!!!

My dad put me in a conversion camp at 15. It’s just a great idea to try to convert someone when they are surrounded by people who think and feel the same way. It’s a given that it didn’t work out the way he’d hoped it would..

I genuinely don't understand how the government can't tell the church what to do when what they're doing is child abuse. Isn't it the government's responsibility to look out for the wellbeing of children even when their parents don't?

I agree with you. I can't make sense of it either. The US government is ruled by christianity. Even healthcare decisions are made based off of christian beliefs, without any medical backing. It's very scary.

Yes, the stories of those children and their families deserve as much exposure and attention as possible. Any and all adults complicit in this horrific crime need to be exposed, and if still living, prosecuted. From the top of the government down to the ones who snatched these precious children out of their mothers’ arms. The people in power now should make it a top priority to identify as many of these children as possible and have their remains returned to their families.

Great episode, it reminds of the “camps” in Utah for “wayward” kids. It’s full blown abuse, my former sister-in-law is a survivor. I believe Paris Hilton also had the misfortune of being forced in a torture school also in Utah. Would love to see an expose on those terrible programs.
