Garage Lumber Rack - Easy Cheap DIY Project

  • Here is a quick and simple medium duty lumber rack that I made out of 2x3's and 1/2 plywood. This is a super easy project that can be useful to anyone from a beginner to the more seasoned builder.
This project used 6 - 2x3's and 2 1/2 - 10" strips of 1/2 plywood. Plywood was in the home depot 70% off cull bin (for around $4-5 per sheet) and was warped and cracked in many places... but still good enough for this project:) Not sure how many screws I used but lets say that a 1/3 to 1/2 a box would do it;) I used an assortment of what I had on hand though.
Please check out my other videos for more random homesteading style projects:) Thanks for watching!

I probably viewed 50 or so videos of shop lumber storage racks. I liked your design the best as I had most of the spare stock to make it, and your "pull up". the pull up sold it. I was looking for something that could handle that kind of weight. I cleaned out the garage and made it this weekend. It turned out awesome! Just wanted to say thanks for the video.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Doing this this weekend. I tore down about 200' of fence when I moved into my house and have been using it for projects (like double barn doors for my man cave) and I still have a mountain of it that needs to be organized taking up half my garage. Was about to spend money at home depot but I got the pieces for this. Great design! Thanks for sharing!

Just like other comments I too had seen other videos and everything looked weak, I was a little skeptical at first about this design also but decided to go with it, I made 6 rows about 2 feet apart and i have huge 8 quarter cherry and walnut stacked on it. I even did a weight test, it holds up great. I didn't watch the full video because I knew exactly how to go about doing this, and put screws and glue on everything. I put 3 screws on each side and 2 in the back for the 2x4. It's holding a huge load of wood. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • @tornadokat

I use magnets all the time to find drywall screws and thus the studs... most of the time. Sometimes you get a wall where whoever hung the drywall totally sucked at hitting the stud. So I use magnets to find the screws super quick and get an idea where the studs are for planning then I go back with a stud finder and verify before putting anything up. Also if you get a really strong magnet you can find EMT, gas pipe, water pipe, etc.

Awesome clip. I particularly like the idea of building the same shelving to store containers / large tubs (instead of doing it the common way to like in the right of frame at the end of your video) so the shelving is a little more open and there are no feet on the ground which I figure will make it lots easier to keep the workshop floor clean. Thanks for sharing..

Yes, finally someone else who uses magnets. I have some strong magnets wrapped in electrical tape so they don't mar up surfaces and use them for the same purpose.
    Anyway, great video.
Looking for shelving ideas for our pole barn but cannot use the horizontal braces that the metal siding attaches too as it would be too flimsy.
Great idea and I plan on either fitting 4x4's with cutouts to fit vertically over the horizontal braces or doubling up 2x4's

Very nice work! I've had an 32' orange fiberglass ladder hanging to two single 3/4 plywood triangles on the outside of a tool shed for the last 12 years. I'm amazed at the strength of that stuff. Your doubling of them with the 2x3 center block is a very clean shop solution. I've never seen the baby-safety magnets! They look like they're safe for using on painted walls, whereas a plain magnet might leave a mark. A clever repurposing. Thanks for the video.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  10 лет назад

zillustration Thanks ZI! They really are amazingly strong... glad you had such good luck with yours for your ladder. And yes, the baby magnets are pretty useful... they are used for the magnetic lock devices for cabinets and such ..... but my wife gets mad if I don't put them back right away:) Thanks for watching!

homesteadonomics - I'm in a 4 seasons state, so I did run a bread of 100% silicon caulk along the top edges of the plywood bracket before placing it outside. The caulk has made the bracket fairly weather tight, though after 14 years they're showing some surface buckle.

Hi Joe, this just popped up on my RUclips home screen and I thought I'd take a look at what you've done. Great Idea. It just so happens I had a sheet of what we use to call wafer board - not chip board this had good sized chunks of plywood in it - anyway used it with 2x4's cut in half - also instead of nailing cleats to vertical boards I measured and drilled with holes - So now I can put dowel rods or bolts into holes and readjust heights at will - I felt safer with 1/4 bolts - works great! PS: liked the Magnet trick too!

Great project that I am going to try and build. I know the store where I buy lumber have 2$4 which measures 1 1/2& 3 1/2. I will check, but I have 2$4 s here and would like to use them. Anything I should look out for since I am going a little larger. I am new to wood working and I have been using wood working to keep me grounded, keeps my hands and mind busy. Thank You for the video..... Pete

Great organization! I like the descriptions during the fast-forwarded parts of the video. Hope the broken camera situation isn't too bad. :)

Thanks Jess! Unfortunately the camera has to be sent in for repair as it took a windblown fall when I was cutting the brackets... got another on order right now so it should be here by Friday!
