I thought this would have been a great adventure for you youngsters, sorry to learn about those seats. They look comfortable but, I guess, they do need a recline function. A pillow would have helped too. When I was young, my parents would often take me and my siblings on the night boat trains which connected with the ferry as far away as Fishguard or Holyhead, but it was different then, and the carriages had comfortable compartments which offered some privacy and a chance to grab some shut eye. But thanks to your suffering, you've brought us another informative video report. Well done!
It was certainly an experience I'll remember for better or worse 😂. I don't get why they didn't fit them with first class seats, they'd get a lot more customers like the cal sleeper, because honestly it's no way to travel, was worse than a coach tbh. Glad you enjoyed my suffering though 😂😅
Hu
Great video.
Excellent video, congratulations. I subscribed to your channel. A hug
Because this is a mk3 coach, you'd expect the seats to be comfortable but nope, GWR love putting uncomfortable seats in their trains
Very true, I don't get why they didn't keep the 2+1 configuration of the seats when they refurbished their night Riviera coaches. It's ashame as it was a pretty brutal 8 hours.
They're the old first class seats from the FGW era, just recovered with GWR moquette.
It is a sleeper train - the cabins with beds are the reason for this train . The seats are only intended for shorter trips .
Well we were mad enough to do for the whole journey 😂. They honestly should be better though, as some people do travel the whole line.
Do hope you enjoyed the video!
Quick question, what kind of trips would you like in the future? Any ideas which TOCs, routes and trains?
PS: sorry about the outro I was very tired!
Indeed I did! Until a few years ago the seated carriages in the "Night Riviera" were unrefurbished First Class Mark 3's with comfortable, wide, reclining seats laid out in 2+1 format across the aisle. Then GWR had the bright idea of using the Class 57 locomotive and seated carriages to operate an early morning, all-stations commuter service from Penzance to Par and back. The First Class seat layout was considered to be far too generous for daytime passengers, so to squeeze in as many people as possible the bays of six seats were replaced with airline style, 2+2's across the aisle in high-density Standard class format. Then the game changed, because slam-door carriages couldn't be used at stations with short platforms, so the spare Sleeper seated accommodation couldn't be used to provide a "crowdbuster" infill service to Par. leaving GWR with expensively-refurbished seated coaches which are unfit for their primary purpose of providing comfortable, spacious accommodation on a long overnight journey! The main reason for the survival of the "Night Riviera" is the connection which it provides with the ferry from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly and I look forward to watching your video report of that 28 mile onward journey in due course!
Think its better paying the extra for a berth than the seats, at least you can sleep better than trying to with the seats.
Agreed it was a bit of an uncomfortable 8 hours!
Good video. I have travelled on this service several times and it’s only decent if you have a cabin. If anyone is going to sit, they should take a daytime train.
Yes agreed, it was a pretty uncomfortable few hours 😅
I've taken the daytime trains, the seats are awful
@@JudgeGeneHunt Yeah but easier if you are awake. Sleeping on them is pretty uncomfortable.
A good video. I am in Australia but have booked travel on the GWR NR - in a sleeper a few months away. (I have been to Penzance and done all the branch lines in the West Country previously: all were good, especially Gunnislake and best, Looe). However I've sat up on worse seats than you show - 'The Tilt Train' between Cairns and Brisbane in Queensland has even worse seats, yet XPTs from Sydney to Melbourne, Brisbane and other routes in Oz have comfortable seats (especially in first class as more legroom).
Before these carriages came in they used old First class carriages much more comfortable. Yes I used them regularly. I've not used the new carriages.
Where’s Paddington Bear? Normally he’s under the clock at platform 1
Our furry little friend from Peru has been re-located to the Praed Street entrance to Paddington Station!
@@KempSimon I've seen a few of ur comments, why do u use ! so much 😂
@@jim6647 - Force of habit, I suppose. I don't think that my use of exclamation marks is grossly excessive, but that's just my opinion.
@@KempSimonWonder we’re Paddington had relocated too.
Great video! I appreciate that if you want sleep, the seated accommodation is not up to the job! The sad thing is pre-refurbishment they most certainly were! To the extent that the only difference between seated and the lounge was a table lamp! However if like me you live in Plymouth and just want a fun midnight journey on a loco hauled slam door train to either Exeter or Taunton, seated accommodation is perfectly fine!
I did this in summer 1986 which were back then the InterCity Mark 2 coaches. I thought they were a bit more comfortable than the Mark 3. The Caledonian Sleeper in seating though is tougher.
Actually, something strange happened on my trip, we actually boarded from platform 2. That was a bit odd, but the entire trip went smoothly.
Imagine sitting down on a ironing board seat for many hours when travelling long distance. Especially on LNER and GWR for example. Where the seats on the Night Riviera comfortable?
Seats aren't bad, not as bad as an iron border luckily, still not great for a sleeper service.
@@danielstripreports Ok 👍
I wouldn’t even bother in a seat for this train! Cabin for me all the way especially after a 8hr shift at work
Yeah I did regret having a seat on this journey, but was a laugh, something to remember.
Interesting. Think I'm going to cause a lot of controversy here but honestly I'd actually like to try this once or twice seated (done the daytime seats a few times and honestly sometimes even megabus can do better!)
thanks for the video..i just bought tickets for a seat London to Penzance return..what is the maximum speed of the train? how was the journey?
The legroom is less that on CrossCountrys 221 VOYAGERS in STANDARD class
I don't think it's that bad 😅 but yh not gd enough for a sleeper service
@@danielstripreports genuinely think it was lmao😭
In September for our wedding anniversary I took my wife to Penzance on the same train (in a cabin) and it was a really good trip. But in all honesty I wouldn't advise the day time service on that route. The seats on the class 800 series trains are awful. I have never had such an unpleasant journey. We were on that train for over 7 hours. The views were brilliant but it was like sitting on a broken park bench.
Like 73. Super video
Iam suscribe in your channel. Getting 😉
😂 😂 i get what you are saying a hour or 2 is justified but 8 is no way to do it. Although Its comfier than a GWR class 800/802. Its nothing special for that long.. i did it in beds in may and Seats in august. Bed penzance to pad and seat pad to penzance. Beds definately brilliant and made my 16th b day great! Seat definitely not pad penzance. I will stick to daytime trains xD getting a seatfrog and sitting in 1st or advance singles 😅😅
I will say tho MK3s and Buffet car is ultimate addition to the sleeper regarding the train. And I do love the curtains. Shame they can't dim the lighting recline the seats and add more padding to the seats. It would be a massive selling point on better comfort. 😊
@@luketrainspotteryt2007 MK3 carriages are the best
Hi Daniel, this didn't go Info my notifications box?
Hmm that's strange, I think sometimes RUclips just has bugs once in a while.
@@danielstripreports RUclips can some issues with notifications and comments
All that money spent on refurbishment and the experience gets worse. Same as Caley sleeper seats. Unbearable even with sleeping tablets.
How many coaches does a GWR Night Riviera train have?
7 I believe
@@danielstripreports the XC HSTs also have 7 carriages
Been watching yous for a while, your video quality has gone down and down, really dissatisfied. Unsubscribed 👎
Oh no he lost a subscriber out of the other 1 thousand he has, whatever will he do

Nice meeting you chaps on board the Riviera Sleeper Train - it was the most bizarre experience but very amusing nonetheless! 🚆
Nice to meet u too Dominic 🤝
