True - Always pop the grilles off if you can and check the cones. If there's some separation between the foam/cone/surround and the cabinet then they can sometimes be super-glued back in place. If the foam rubber cone is cracked or brittle then it's toast and will need re-foaming. Last speaker I had done by a local shop was about $30 for 1 speaker.
With speakers, you should always check the woofer surrounds. If they need refoaming, that should be taken into consideration.
