  • In India, an initiative to bring internet access across the country has helped millions plug into new digital technologies. One of them is a payments system that is transforming the way business is being done in the vast rural areas of the country. Anjana Pasricha has a report.

    CORRECTIONS :-
    1) UPI works also in offline mode
    2) Now even personal phones are not needed, unified toll free is all one needs.. Everything is soo much digitalized, integrated and seamlessly unified

      And UPI is a direct to bank transaction and instant. Paypal and others should learn this, in 2022 it's appalling that transactions are not instantaneous(unlike India's UPI) and sometimes even take days.

      @@blackheart6288 by offline it means that you can do transaction by dialling a USSD code. I think its *99# then you have to follow general instructions that it provides. No need of internet but you still obviously need a working cellular network signal.

    1) going to banks
    2) Going to ATMs
    3) Carrying a wallet
    4) Paying in cash
    5) BUYING from shops who don't have UPI
    Very soon I will end my dependence on petroleum
    I will go fully green

      All my earnings are deposited directly in bank and expenditures are 99% digital - including salary and even milk man, paper man 👨- till last month my filling station did not accept phone pe but from this month, they have also put up a QR code.

    I remember one of the former Finance minister from Congress, M Chidambaram mocked Modi Govt. saying (mockingly in Parliament) "so you (govt.) are saying the poor people in vilages will have debit and credit machines for one or two rupees transaction, where there is no electricity" and he laughed loudly along with other opposition parties. Now the rest is history and whole World laugh at him 😂😂

And is just mocking anything bjp does, completely disregarding many other government employees who work to deliver the results & also the academicians and private sector experts who have put effort to bring this digital revolution.

      Just to give you some context . NPCI came into existence under the leadership of P Chidambaram in 2008 , company who made upi imps .
      Also UPI was brain child of Raghuram Rajan ex governor of Rbi .
      Modi is a great leader . But always remember give credit where credit is due .

      Yes it is. It also cuts down on cheating and saves the vendor lot of work. He can see instantly how much sales occurred that day. He can order goods to suit his volume on a day to day basis trimming his inventory.

      Be careful with those digital payments. Never ever give up cash money. If there's only digital money the banks & government can block your account when you do something they don't like. This happened to the truckers in Canada who protested the vaccine mandates. That's why we should never accept CBDC only. Always keep the cash. And through digital payments the banks & government can see what you buy. Farewell privacy. In Europe they want to check your CO2 emission through your purchases. If you ate meat that week, no traveling by car for you. It's all about control. Wake up friends!

    Visited India after 7 years and as I felt that I was so late back for showing credit cards and handing over cash. Lower middle income group is surprisingly using UPI digital payments and the data aka internet is so cheap there

      All other sims will work with *99#
      Just dial from the no. Which is registered with your bank account it will do everything automatically asign a pin and you're good to go
      But keep this in mind the daily limit is 5000/- using this method

    I use UPI 90% all the time
    Paying for fuel food groceries clothing shopping etc almost everything

    Covid 19 really pushed technology into the rural areas of india, during those lockdown period everyone turned to digital payment methods rather than physical money to reduce contact. Also Jio's rapid expansion and cheap rates at the start made internet available to common people.

    You just have to find a way to enable this for foreigners and travellers too, the system is awesome 👌 it‘s similar to our „Twint“ in Switzerland just on a much larger scale.

I meant, if you are traveling india as a foreigner, it's not possible to use the system without a permanent indian recidency from what i konw thus is would be good to have a solution there as many foreign credit cards are not accepted everywhere and ATM's a bit rare imo.

      @@binskee677 Yes in UPI 2.0 they are testing the features to add credit card to UPI along with an offline app & transaction by calling (won't need smartphones), which will go live for all mostly in 1st quarter 2023.
      For foreigners to link their bank account will need UPI to be accepted by their country, so they are working on that.
      For time being I think most UPI vendor aap are providing wallet , But I think they should start a online secure bank for foreigners (where they can transfer some fund to that bank after getting a Indian SIM & use it hassle-free)

      @@Siturambo I think addin a foreign credit card would be enough as most travellers have a credit card, but then i have to say we here already have a app where you can add your credit card, bank account or load it with money like pre payed card since years (it's called TWINT) and you can pay with a QR Code and send money to friend via phone number instantly. Paying via calling would be something new but i cannot image in a usecase where i would use that unless for people who don't have a smartphone. Is UPI linked to your mobile sim? maybe i don't fully understand yet how it works, but whats really impressive is the implementation of such a solution on such large scale!

      @@binskee677 Actually authentication happens via your sim. If the sim is linked to the bank number, once you login it will automatically detect/load all bank accounts & credit card linked to that sim.
      You won't have to enter any details , while paying you can use your card pin .
      The offline function is mostly for place where there is Network issue (e.g. on a trek to a mountain) & for rural areas.

    UPI is not cheap, it is free of cost. India has just introduced Digital Currency E-Rupee. India is going to become almost cashless society by 2030 or later within next few years may be 100℅ cashless society. So, India's UPI, Rupay Card and E-Rupee are going to be worldwide success very soon.

    digitization in India is on next level 🔥🔥I dont even take my wallet with me anywhere. Everything in my phone, for payment: UPI,
    driving license & other IDs: Digilocker, vaccine certificate: cowin. Everything works seamlessly.
    Which other countries even provide service to download vaccine certificate through WhatsApp?? people may think these are just small & easy things but they are not!! as our MEA said one time, on being asked to vaccine certificate my son in USA produced a paper out of his wallet and I showed took out my phone

    I haven't used cash for last 3 years.
    ATM line has also been reduced significantly.
    Waiting for the time when ATM will start dispensing cash with just a scan of QR Code.

    In today's scenario , if a vendor says he doesn't accept online payment UPI, PAYTM, PHONEPE ,GOOGLEPAY he sees gradual reduction in customer at his shop . People avoid visiting that shop . Now it becomes necessity for vendors to immediately adopt digital payment system otherwise they will lose their significant customers

    I got graduated in 2017. It was the year when I got my first job and every shop/store has been embracing UPI. I never went to a bank in my life (expect on the first day when banks came to us for account opening) or carried any cash. I just use UPI all the time in day to day activities. That was my life style. Then I shifted to Toronto, Canada. I feel like I went past in time using cards and cash. So slow process and feel like India is living in future.

    I am from a small village in Eastern state of bihar(most economically challenged state) ..n i m happy that even in my village 60-70% transaction are done online.. N fun fact is sometimes it passed months to see cash..

    Don't remember using cash in last 5 years. I went to Europe a couple of times and was surprised to see people waiting in queues at supermarkets to pay cash. It was inconvenient to carry and took longer to settle.

    Your Mobile no. is your payment id! Damn that’s so easy to use and remember for even elders! Payment from Sender to Receiver’s account in just Seconds, 24X7, safe & without even an extra penny as transaction charges! Great Work India!

    There is a thing called offline UPI, you just need to msg a no. with a unique ID and the amount. The no. from where you are sending the money should have been linked to your bank a/c. Even if you do not have internet you can just use the network tower to do the transaction thats pretty amazing itself.

    Even here in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Part of indian Union Territory almost 90% of all transactions take place through UPI. I dont have to worry about carrying cash when i step out of my house. The transaction is free of cost, fast, simple to understand, and doesn't require fast internet connections. UPI was an absolute chad move by the indian government :)

    We have a festival in Kerala called Vishu (similar to Bihu in Assam) and one local custom is handing currency notes to children and young ones in the family and friends circle. Nowadays some people have started using UPI, instead. No going to be Bank to get lower denomination notes, etc. Even at the Petrol Bunk, if the bill comes to say 791.57, we can pay the exact amount. It is so convenient.
    I would not be surprised in the future when beggars and those wanting handouts start flaunting their personal QR codes.

    With UPI, India has done something that the developed world hasn’t.
    From grocery to electronics, Indians pay it in split seconds through UPI. The amount is immediately credited to the seller’s bank account. Indians have stopped visiting Banks as there is no cash to be handled.
    With the time saved in payments, even a small time tea seller has doubled his daily sale owing to lesser time wasted.
    UPI is helping the economy grow faster. No wonder India’s GDP is counted amongst the fastest growing in the world.
