Another great video. These are very thin markers made of hdpe . The dielectric constant of hdpe is close to that of dry sand (which is placed over the pipe), so gpr cannot "see" it. Of course, because there are specifications for pipeline marking, the user, after locating the pipeline with gpr, should assume that there is also the corresponding marker above it.

Thanks so much for commenting. I appreciate your take and I know the rest of the community will too. We have definitely seen some other materials, and in the case of the training I was conducting they put concrete slabs as markers in the trench above the pipe. I agree that the tape will be difficult. Unfortunately, sometimes people cut corners and while there should definitely be a corresponding marker, we always need to be careful. Thanks again for the comment!

Hi from Russia, Dan! Been watching your videos since the first one! I'm in GPR surveys since 2007. Well, I have a bad experience in searching for a gas pipe along the Moscow Big Ringway in winter 2018. I was equipped with a dual-channel GPR antenna 250/700 MHz and failed to find the pipe in swampy soil. The officials said later the pipe was marked with a steel line and was 1.5 m below the ground surface. No proof.

Thanks for sharing. It is important that we as a community make sure each other have these examples so we can all be careful with clients and potential clients. Especially municipalities. Also, thanks so much for all of the support these years. I appreciate you watching since the first vid!

Hey Dan just wanted to add my input.
    1. The tapes reflective properties are not strong enough.
    2. If it was very shallow (within a foot) and you were using a high frequency antenna I would say yes.
    3. Soil type as you know always plays a big part.
    4. Even if you road on top of the pipe you would still just see the pipe.
I have located water lines with a 400 MHZ antenna and if the flanges on the joints if they are wide enough you will have a little spike in date, true be told if you don't know what you are looking for you would miss it. Love your videos I enjoy the content keep up the great work you are doing.
    Thank

Hey Dan, great video, I can tell you from experience that at least in clay, warning tape definitely can show up in GPR data. Sometimes in addition to the actual target, sometimes instead of it, and sometimes not at all.

You keep saying "depths far from the surface". Can you give an example depth? 1 meter, 10 meter, 100 meter?
