Thanks for another great shipping update. There are a couple of marine fire incidences that may have escaped your attention. You may wish to bring these up in your next update. One incident involves two gas tankers, the B-LPG Sophia and the Captain Nikolas, both of which caught fire after completing an STS-operation off Chittagong, India this past Sunday. The other involves a small oil tanker, Annika carrying refined oil, that caught fire off the North German coast near Warnemunde last Friday, Oct. 11. All crew members from all three ships are reported to be safe, with only a few having suffered minor injuries.
Just a note on the CO (and as with you this applies regardless of the person's, gender, orientation, skin colour, or whatever). Usually people serve in the UK (RAN, Army, or RAF) for 20 years. Quite often other members of the Commonwealth offer "lateral" transfers - in this case from RN to RNZN, based on shortfalls in staffing (in this case RNZN). If, as seems the case, RNZN had a shortfall in qualified Captains (role not rank), they may well have offered her, and indeed others coming up to retirement from the RN, a position.
I am south of Tampa. Florida State Police cruisers are escorting fuel tanker trucks down I 75 with lights & sirens.... They are not kidding around, they are going to get that fuel delivered....
Probably a good idea. They let the logs and hours of service limits just about go out the window in case of emergency. Not complaint or saying they shouldn't. But it would be safer to be escorted as well as save time making it safer again.
Thank you for your channel, I thoroughly enjoy your presentations. Excellent point about the responsibility of a ship's captain. As captain you have absolute authority but only because you have absolute responsibility.

It appeared to me that the head of the East and Gulf longshoreman's union was trying to sound like Harry Bridges back in the day. However, even Bridges gave in to practicality in the end.
On behalf of European Pilot Arie Palmers, I will point out that the retrieval line is rigged incorrectly on the M/T Golden State. It is a common mistake, which I became aware of courtesy of his Safe Ladders campaign. The line should be on the forward side of the ladder and at the lowest spreader. The PRC only seems to back down to fatalities on each side. Examples are the conflict between PRC fishing vessels in ROK (Republic of Korea) waters and the land border with India and the PRC. I have witnessed PRC fishing vessels violating the Japanese EEZ on multiple occasions.
Imagine the ship heaving underneath you on the pilot ladder and catching air 🤮 then slapping back into the hull assuming you were able to cling on for dear life.

Rope ladders were all we had 50 years ago, and I never dropped a pilot into the drink. 4 lengths of 3/4" Manila, with a practical strength of a ton and a half (actual strength about 3 times that), are stronger than the wooden rungs. But no matter how strong the ladder is, the pilot is limited by his own grip on the ladder.

Just like making nitroglycerian, one has to follow the rules of safety, BTW, I helped make 500 quarts and if you think you had a hell of a headache before mixing nitroglycerian gives one a greater headache than one ever experienced. Bob was a stickler about safety. He told about one time he was inserting the copper canisters of nitro that would be lowered into the wells into the rubber cells in his truck. He heard a clink.
